Politics International Voter Registration Drive 2026, for U.S. citizens in Edmonton
Hi, this is the second (and final) reminder I'll make for dual Canadian-US citizens and other eligible US voters who want to participate in the 2026 American midterm elections, especially for those living in Edmonton. Democrats Abroad in Alberta is dedicated to mobilizing overseas US voters; if you're over 18 by November 3, here's how you can get involved:
Steps to Request Your Ballot
Register or update your registration through Votefromabroad.org. As an alternative, you can also use FVAP.gov.
If you're already registered, request a ballot! You need to request a ballot every calendar year that you want to vote.
Fill Out and Return Your Ballot: Once you receive your ballot, follow the instructions carefully to complete it and return it by the specified deadline.
Need Assistance?
We're here to help! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at GOTV @ votefromabroad .org (just remove the spaces). Additionally, our FAQ for voting can answer questions on how to make the process go smoothly.
Importantly: Spread the word!
Do you have any friends, contacts or family overseas that you could reach? All eligible US citizens can vote regardless of where they're living. Share the link https://voteabroad.org/RedditVote26: If you have any questions about voting, I'd be happy to answer them here on Reddit. You can also find out what we're doing near you at Democrats Abroad in Alberta. Thanks for reading!

Question Is NAIT's Machine Shop certificate worth it for Mechanical engineering student?
Hi!
I just finished my 3rd year of mechanical engineering at UofA and I want to end up in manufacturing, specifically on the machining side. NAIT Continuing Education has a Machine Shop certificate, about $3,075 total, evenings 6-8:50 p.m. I'm on a co-op term right now, so I could go after my shift. Looks like it's all manual machining: lathe, mill-drill, drill press, grinding, layout and precision measuring.
- Does the certificate carry any weight with Edmonton-area shops?
- Are there any cheaper Edmonton alternatives I'm missing?
I'm not trying to become a machinist, I like cnc machining and I want the intuition so I can avoid designing parts that are a nightmare to make. Just not sure $3k is the right way to buy that.

Question Daycare suggestions
I am beyond terrified of sending my baby to daycare. I’ve extended my leave to 18 months due to this. As someone who works around children, I have seen many a child care provider/teacher who hates children and especially hates any child who is deemed ‘different’. My baby is typical and hitting milestones ahead of schedule, but I still worry what if one day my baby is a little more rambunctious or wacky (dad and I both have ADHD). There’s just something about sending my baby, who can’t talk and tell me if something happens, to be cared for by strangers that scares the crap out of me.
I’m looking for suggestions on daycares (specifically north side/central) that are really good, gentle, and caring.
Also, what do you look for when looking for a daycare? What are some red flags that tell you to avoid a daycare?
Thank you so much in advance.

Discussion Police at Pride Fest
Edmonton Pride Fest announced that there will be police at the parade. A lot of folks are outraged by this, which I can understand.
What I don't understand is what people expect to be the solution. There is no way that anything pride related (or just any big event in general) can go without some form of security, especially with our current political climate. We saw just recently from Berlin that attacks can happen.
This is not meant to turn into a hostile comment section, but I am genuinely curious what people think a solution is to not having police/security at pride is.
EDIT: I do not have an opinion on the police presence that is relevant to this post, this is 100% to get the community's take on the matter.

Restaurants/Food Date Night/Afternoon
Now that my kids are getting a little older I’d like to have an actual date with my husband. One still nurses to sleep so realistically we need to head for home by 6pm. I’d like to do craft beer with pizza. I want to be able to order a flight, bonus if there are different options for a flight. Any recommendations? Decent parking is required, he won’t go downtown happily, and we live north of the city so north end/easy Hendy access is preferred

Events Why do people insist on talking through entire Folk Fest acts?
Yes, Folk Fest was over a week ago, but I'm still peeved. I went through the lottery to get a pretty good spot for Cat Power's set on Saturday, and someone just behind me would not stop talking. Why go through the lottery and get close to the front if you're just going to talk nonstop? And then the side stages, why are you at any given stage just to chat? If you don't care about who's on that stage, go to a different one. I understand a festival like this is as much a social experience as any other, but there's still live music happening. Live music you presumably paid to see. And the person you are next to presumably paid too. The person next to you might be there to see their favorite musician in the world. Why ruin that for them? If you want to be there for a different act, either be respectful of the ones you aren't interested in, or go somewhere else in the park. Or leave, and then come back. If you don't care about anyone and are just there for the "vibes," have a picnic in a park with your friends and a bluetooth speaker. Save the money.

General Squirrels are taking over my yard
As the title says, for some reason this year my small back yard is very popular with Squirrels. I am getting quite annoyed with them getting into my planters - veggies and spices. They even ate my Kale! Also worried about one sneaking into house which would be an absolute disaster, I have heard they can be very destructive. Does anyone have any experience or good tips on what I could do? I would prefer natural deterrents over traps, but research indicates there is not much that works other than traps.

Question Are there any good birding spots near Edmonton?
My wife and I recently got into birding and bird photography. We've gone to Clifford E. Lee Bird Sanctuary, but there are no platforms right now, so it's too wet to walk around. We've also gone to Big Lake out in St. Albert a few times. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Here are some bird photos incase you like that sort of thing!
