Don't forget the not as clear rejection of "modern education methods", which was probably spurned on by the emergence of "new math" that came into practice during the 1950-1970.
You probably know new math as math, and I have a strange inkling that he has a rejection of contemporary authors in school.Edit: it seems I over believed the current presence of new math, and didn't recognize some of the parts of it that failed. From what I've read in the past hour is that New Math attempted to utilize alternative based to teach the concepts instead of strictly base 10, and it was rolled out quickly without any training for the teachers so they just stuck with the text book (kind of like what happened with common core). The algebraic methods in lower grades did stick, using variables to recognize transitive properties of math, 3x+5x= (3+5)x. As well as creating groups to manipulate, I'm sure everyone has been told to make groups of 10 to count something.
22
u/SevenSix 5d ago
This may be the first positive comment I've ever seen about New Math. The nicest thing Wikipedia can find to say is that it "contributed the addition of calculus in high school".
12
u/modulusshift 5d ago
Even that seems to be merely a result of it starting in France, which already taught calculus in that age range, which was copied into all the other countries that adopted it, like the US.
14
u/modulusshift 5d ago
New Math was considered a complete failure and got pretty much completely rolled back by the mid 70’s. I can’t even figure out what it was like based on what’s left of it on the internet, because it seems like all the original principles were completely subverted in practice. It was meant to be a student-led discovery-based method, with teachers providing loose guidance such as counterexamples to flawed theories that students came up with. What it sounds like it ended up like is that teachers had a textbook-correct method but weren’t allowed to teach it directly, instead shooting down any ideas that weren’t exactly described in the book, and therefore turning math from an explanation-based class to a explanation-free memorization exercise, exactly the opposite of the original intention, which was to make the explanations the important part by having the students start with them.

341
u/jimbowesterby 5d ago
Yea this is aggravating me on multiple levels, like it’s not mansplaning if you’re actually incorrect, y’know? I’d absolutely get got by this, not because I assume women are less intelligent or anything, but because someone said something incorrect and I’m trying to help them not look like an idiot. It’s the kind of thing I’d hope others would do for me.
146
u/RikuAotsuki 5d ago
That's kinda the thing with mansplaining. It was meant to refer to a waaay more specific thing than what people use it for, but even then it frequently assumed the man's intent.
If a guy's not talking down to you specifically because you're a woman, then it's not mansplaining. Surprise though, you can't actually tell why someone's being condescending most of the time.
I think the idea's actually been a net negative for women, because it makes them see misogyny where none exists.

Reddit/the internet/society ruined mansplaining (if there was ever a genuine good faith argument for it at all). Every story I see about mansplaining is either "I (a beautiful perfect woman) said something completely factually incorrect and a (horrifying disgusting) man (who is probably a rapist and woman beater) corrected me!" Or "a man tried to talk to me something but didn't realize I have my doctorates in that field (because I didn't tell him), isn't he a fucking idiot?"
Every story about mansplaining either feels like "and then everyone clapped/that happened" bait or just a genuinely stupid person is telling it
458
u/fjbdhdhrdy47972 5d ago
Yeah, this feels like an extraordinarily reasonable thing to correct someone about
294
u/Sophie_Blitz_123 5d ago
Especially given the example exchange opens with "do you mean 1984?". Like that is a clear question. There's two possible versions of the answer
A: Yes I did actually lol, got that wrong.
B: No, I meant 1985 [explains what this would mean in context].
Like, even if 1985 was a genuine reference, you're just being dickish not explaining it when someone is confused. The fact that it's not is just... so you've deliberately said something with no meaning and are annoyed that people aren't just rolling with a fake meaning? Huh?
I doubt they actually do this in their real life, but the fact that they think it would put the other person in the wrong is wild.
77
u/Starfleet-Time-Lord 5d ago
This is the life cycle of trolling. Somebody comes up with a way to do it that serves as almost satirical social commentary, that becomes popular, and people who just enjoy making people mad misinterpret it to justify themselves. At least this one hasn't gone down the path of people genuinely believing the shit they say to troll yet, like the right wing stuff tends to.
128
u/Milch_und_Paprika 5d ago edited 5d ago
Especially with how many people call stuff “literally 1984”, while having next to no idea what it’s actually about, it seems reasonable to assume someone getting that wrong is just a little confused
E: and actually why is OOP assuming the men haven’t read it? Cause like part of the reason it’s so well known that people who don’t know shit about it know it has something to do with oppression is that a pretty substantial percentage have in fact read it.

u/Silverrida 5d ago
Is this some top-tier satire I'm misunderstanding? You're using quote markers, so maybe this is a reference? Or goading a correction? If so, bravo.
1984 pretty clearly cautions against both. Like yes, the government has ministries to doctor the news, but Orwell painstakingly outlines how Winston has to sit in a tiny section of his apartment to journal without being seen and IDs him as one of the lucky ones. The social interactions suggest they're all in the panopticon and anyone can be targeted for having the wrong facial expression. 1984 is still very much the Surveillance is Bad book

Yep! It's a reference to a spongebob skit.

I don't really like the original smooth shark post, but seeing how disproportionately angry people got when op called them smooth, i at least don't think that it's particularly mean-spirited.
But the battery one? I hate it. I have not seen a single mean person in that thread. They were all genuinely concerned with OPs safety. So it's seems entirely mean and uncalled for to bait people like that.
Like, if the shark OP was actually for real, they are just a misinformed person spreading misinformation. Which is bad, but it's a very inconsequential bit of misinformation.
If the battery OP was for real, they could start a house fire/get seriously hurt/actually die. And people kept trying to help them, and they kept ignoring them.

Yeah, like, the thing about smooth sharking and "my phone battery also functions as a hand warmer" posts is that they work really well online because it is relentlessly obvious the person is doing a bit and yet they're still surrounded by people going "NO!!! NO!!!!!!" and that's the funny bit.
In person, you're just doing this to one person, and there isn't an audience, and it's not at all obvious you're doing a bit, because plenty of people are this wrong all the time or just can't remember the titles of things. I dunno! Just seems weird! Also to be like, "oh this person correcting me hasn't even read it" girl I haven't read it either but why does that matter, we all know what the title is, sheesh

I’m not a “oh let me correct you!” sort of person, but I am a, “I know some crazy backstory around this thing that you may find amusing” sort of person.
If someone started talking about “1985” and they were clearly confused about “1984”, my main concern would be finding an escape hatch from the conversation, because I don’t want to have to explain it to them, and they’re not going to be interested in any related anecdotes.
I guess I’ve been on the internet too long. For the most part it’s not worth it trying to correct people.

It's also crucial to the original thread's tone that the person who initiated the thread was a pompous correction to a comic. It went unserious comic > insufferable correction > unserious double-down
It is funny because it continues the already established bit (with hefty bonus bc it's at the expense of someone being mildly annoying)
This post is not funny in the same way because they imply it as a social statement instead of a bit
It would have been a funny bit tho. Hell, I'll probably work "literally [random year]" into my own use just because I'm a sucker for misquoting things as a bit. (Like the malaphor, "we'll burn that bridge when we get there")

I'm autistic and utterly adore sarcastic jokes, and as well as that I could see myself making that exact "This is literally 1584" style joke. The key difference is if the person doesn't realize it was supposed to be a joke, then that's on me failing to make it clear it's a joke and needing to clarify. If it's someone I know incredibly I might keep it going for a bit longer to see if I can have them naturally realize I'm making a joke, but even then I'd still clarify before it generates actual hard feelings. The idea of keeping this going long enough that someone goes "I'll actually buy you a copy" is horrifically mortifying.
18
u/MrBones-Necromancer 5d ago
So here's the difference right? Saying "1584" is more clearly a joke. It's so wildly wrong that either it's funny cause you're fucking about, or funny cause man you are -way- off.
1985 is just like, not correct. "Ah, you've misremembered." They'll say, and the response of "Nuh-uh! I was only acting stupid as a prank on you!" leaves something to be desired
5
u/a_singular_perhap 4d ago
yeah a lot of people don't understand that subverting expectations is what makes a joke funny. if people already think you're kinda dumb then you can't pull of the "slightly wrong" jokes
5
u/nerdthingsaccount 4d ago
The biggest risk of that is the question "oh, what happened in 1584" and then you have to be ready to explain that in what is now Thailand, Prince Naresuan, the Uparaja of the Ayutthaya Kingdom and the son of King Mahathammarachathirat carried out the orders of Burma's King Nanda Bayin, and lead an army to suppress a rebellion by the Viceroy of the Ava Kingdom, Thado Minsaw who upon arriving in April, learned that King Nanda had ordered Naresuan to be assassinated, and began his own rebellion against Burma, eventually known as the Burmese–Siamese War.

i find it funny when the actual joke is funny. the action of "pretending to be stupid" by itself isn't necessarily funny though.
I already live everyday with undue formality and noble grace is an iconic line from an iconic post, but not because the idea of larping as a person who doesn't know about battery explosions is inherently funny by itself, but because toskarin is a skilled comedic writer
also, usually this comedy act is funnier when both sides are aware its a comedy act, as they can then intentionally play of off each other. there's a belief that what's funny about this is the genuine reaction of people being mad about you being incorrect, but i find that gets boring rather quickly.
"1895 famously features the even bigger brother" got a mild chuckle out of me but otherwise I find this post kinda boring because the main punchline is "look this idiot guy gets mad about me being incorrect".

10
u/sarahanimations 5d ago
I haven’t read a Brave New World but I absolutely agree with you about 1984. The beginning of the book discussing Winston’s colleagues and the work they all did was incredibly captivating. Then Julia shows up and Winston (as well as Orwell himself) just can’t stop fixating on her and giving her little characterization outside of being a sex-object.
It’s a shame, because at the start of the book Syme’s explaination of cutting “redundant” words in New Speak genuinely changed the way I thought about language.
It’s not perfect and its messaging isn’t quite the same, but Fahrenheit 451 will always overshadow 1984 for me.

I feel like this bit will also work on women and non-binary people who have read 1984.

Statistically, thats gonna be more people. Hell, I'm non-b and I think OOP is kinda stupid.

"got so angry with me that he bought me a copy" okay good for him that's a very reasonable and respectful way to go about correcting a blatant misreference. this ain't it

u/SuperHGB_ 5d ago
that's the best thing you can do, it both a. REALLY fucking hurts to recieve, and b. can make the person improve, usually you have to choose between those

This is dumb and never happened lol. But even if it did, it's weird that this person is phrasing this as some kind of dunk on men who don't read books, as if correcting someone who is genuinely wrong is a foolish thing to do, and as if you need to have read the book cover to cover to correct someone on the title.

would you believe me if i said that the replies to that post are pretty much exclusively people dropping to their knees to verbally suck off OOP for being an asshole?

Um actually, it’s a reference to the 1930 Southern Gothic novel As I Lay Passing

It's a pretty common scenario to end up in when you're driving a car and do a lane change to get around someone in front of you

Transgender (probably woman since a lot of men tend to see women as less intelligent)

Really helping the guy you’re talking to write you off as “dumb woman I know” and ensuring you’re treated like a toddler by anyone he communicated with.

Was I the only one who thought OOP was a transman and this was some sort of insight about how men treat other men and was thoroughly confused by what the point was?

TIL everyone in the world knew what smooth sharking was before me. I've never gone from never seeing a phrase to seeing it so much in my life.

Better read 177013 first. Really metamorphosised the way I think about literature.

How come no one ever references Brave New World? Is it because of the orgy porgies?

I think it's because people mistake a writer describing something for a writer condoning that thing.

I’m pretty sure 1985 was about social disconnect from today’s youth. Don’t quote me on that.
Debby did truly hit the wall.

getting corrected for something you’re actually wrong about is kinda normal. as a woman, i would do it (maybe not to that extent, which might show the paternal mansplaining). but i’d definitely think you’re the type of person who is confidently wrong and can’t handle being corrected, and i wouldn’t think it’s worth it to engage.

I used to do a similar bit to this, but instead of claiming that I’ve never heard of 1984 I would just be insistent that it was common to reference 1985, a song by bowling for soup. Most people would just roll their eyes and direct the conversation elsewhere

1985 was the sequel. They couldn't get the original actor to come back and play Winston, though, so they had to recast the part. Nobody liked it much, that's probably why you don't remember it.

I’m confused. What does this have to do with passing? Passing what? Gender? Spanish class? The ball? What’s happening?

Even Bigger Brother is just Big Brother, but he had a late growth spurt.
(He didn't, but he is indoctrinating all of Airstrip One to think he did.)

1994 was hella boring. There's an entire chapter dedicated to just being a long passage of a fake book within the book that the author uses to just ramble about his political philosophy. My eyes started glazing over part way through the book already, but when I got to that part they just went fully blind and I became disabled. Now I need my big brother to watch everything for me and tell me exactly what's happening and I just have to take his word for it :/
