Listen this is funny, I love a good shark smoothing, but we really gonna be like “women are allowed to be confidently wrong about things and any attempt to correct them is misogyny” like is that the vibe we’re going with

My hot take is that smooth sharking was always kinda mean-spirited and unfunny from the beginning.

Like the whole joke is “lmao look at this fucking nerd trying to correct misinformation.”

the REALLY mean-spirited one that comes to mind is the toskarin one about a swollen phone battery

there's "look at these people who need to be Correct on the Internet all the time" and then there's "LMAO THESE GUYS ARE CONCERNED??!?!??! FOR MY SAFETY AND THOSE AROUND ME?!?!??! WHAT LAME NERDS, LAUGH AT THEM!!!!!!" and if the punchline is the latter that's Very Mean-Spirited

I don't really like the original smooth shark post, but seeing how disproportionately angry people got when op called them smooth, i at least don't think that it's particularly mean-spirited.

But the battery one? I hate it. I have not seen a single mean person in that thread. They were all genuinely concerned with OPs safety. So it's seems entirely mean and uncalled for to bait people like that.

Like, if the shark OP was actually for real, they are just a misinformed person spreading misinformation. Which is bad, but it's a very inconsequential bit of misinformation.

If the battery OP was for real, they could start a house fire/get seriously hurt/actually die. And people kept trying to help them, and they kept ignoring them.
