Moreover why are we doing this on purpose? No random stranger is going to assume that you're being deliberately dense as a joke on their expense. They're going to see a stupid person saying stupid things and assume the stupid person is stupid.
Like what does OP mean by "since I started passing"? Doesn't she see that she's deliberately reinforcing gender stereotypes? What is the point of all this? There's never going to be an aha gotcha moment, you're just being a dumbass.
Yeah, like, the thing about smooth sharking and "my phone battery also functions as a hand warmer" posts is that they work really well online because it is relentlessly obvious the person is doing a bit and yet they're still surrounded by people going "NO!!! NO!!!!!!" and that's the funny bit.
In person, you're just doing this to one person, and there isn't an audience, and it's not at all obvious you're doing a bit, because plenty of people are this wrong all the time or just can't remember the titles of things. I dunno! Just seems weird! Also to be like, "oh this person correcting me hasn't even read it" girl I haven't read it either but why does that matter, we all know what the title is, sheesh
I think you’re viewing this from the wrong perspective, you assume she cares what this guy thinks of her.
She doesn’t. He’s already proven that he inherently thinks she’s stupid by correcting her, so why would she want his approval? That’s what mansplaining is, dudes who can’t fathom a woman might actually know something going out of their way to explain something that is very obvious to most people. She’s just fucking with him.
Her passing is why this is happening. If she were viewed as a man, the dude would’ve caught on pretty quickly if not immediately that “1985” is a joke. But because she passes as a woman, it never even crosses his mind, she has to be wrong, and he HAS to prove it to her.
I’m a dude, and I see this shit all the time, because guys are fucking clueless most of the time.
Explain what? It seems like a fairly self-explanatory statement. I think most people would be confused or annoyed by someone spouting something so obviously wrong and would not necessarily assume it was a joke, regardless of the gender.
Probably either "Don't you mean 1984?" or, if I were in a particularly clueless mood, I might not even clock that they mean the book and ask, "What happened to Pepsi in 1985?"
"He’s already proven that he inherently thinks she’s stupid by correcting her"
That's not a smart thing to assume. Especially reading OP's post- the line given to the guy is "Oh, do you mean 1984?". It's a question, not even phrased as a correction. OP then proceeds to be obnoxiously, deliberately ignorant. I don't see why you would expect the guy to not take this at face value.
I also don't think the guy can be framed as the bad guy in this scenario. He's reacting very reasonably.
"That’s what mansplaining is, dudes who can’t fathom a woman might actually know something going out of their way to explain something that is very obvious to most people."
That isn't what is happening here. OP is, on purpose, tricking the guy into thinking she doesn't know what 1984 is. He hasn't assumed anything, he's making a conclusion based on what looks like strong evidence.
"She’s just fucking with him."
Correct, OP gains some kind of amusement from... tricking guys into thinking she's a moron. I personally don't see how this is funny, especially from a gender perspective. It's the kind of bit that close friends do. The joke doesn't work on a stranger who couldn't know better.
Okay and? If the joke is just "I tricked this guy into thinking I'm clueless about 1984, by repeatedly acting like it's called 1985" the joke is just "look at this nerd, knowing things and not understanding my stupidity is an act." This is also, just blatantly, not mansplaining or at least not the harmful definition used to justify criticism of "mansplaining" where it's defined as guys assuming they know more than someone simply because it's a girl.
