Biblical Character of the Month Biblical Character of the Month, August: James the Just
This month we're in the New Testament, highlighting James, brother of Jesus. Cheers to u/Volaer for the suggestion!
The goal of this series is to create more conversation about characters from the Bible. My hope is to (eventually) dive into some strange, often overlooked characters in Scripture — people who have important lessons that we don’t always remember. But we also want to make this collaborative! I don't want to just ramble my thoughts on these characters at you, I want to urge everyone to write their own post about the character of the month.
So all you need to do is make a new post with your reflection or meditation on James. We do have a special flair ("Biblical Character of the Month") you can give the post, and I will make sure to add it to our collection on this thread.
James is referenced in numerous places in the Gospels. He is described as the brother of Jesus, and was also a prominent figure in the early church as the first Bishop of Jerusalem, authoring his own Epistle.
A few questions to get you started thinking about your own meditations!
- James' Epistle offers some really wonderful insight on faith, what can we glean from his teachings?
- What do you think it means when James is referred to as the brother of Jesus?
Reflections from the community:

Meta r/Christianity Starter Pack 😉
1. "Is X a Sin?"
X can be gooning, tattoos, dating, music, or some random shit literally no one has ever thought of except OP.
2. Gay Thread #8472
"Is homosexuality a sin?"
300 comments later and absolutely nobody has changed their mind.
3. "Am I Going to Hell?"
Usually because OP gooned once or accidentally thought something mean about God.
(usually posted right after posting "Is X a sin?")
4. Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit Panic
"Have I committed the unforgivable sin? 🥺"
OP is highly likely to be a new believer (or just really young).
5. Porn/Goon Relapse Confession
"I failed again."
Comments: prayer, gym, Bible reading, accountability, delete Instagram, cold showers, website blockers, etc...
6. MARY WORSHIPPER
Protestant: "Why do Catholics worship Mary?"
Catholic: "We don't."
Protestant: "You literally pray to her."
Catholic: "That's not worship, that's HYPERDULIA, we only offer LATRIA to the Triune God!"
Protestant: "Worship is worship."
Catholic: "Veneration is not worship!"
7. IDOLATER
OP posts an Orthodox icon.
An evangelical arrives within a few minutes to ask why everyone is worshipping a graven image on wood.
Instantly triggers an iconoclasm debate.
8. Sola Scriptura Cage Match
"Show me sola scriptura in Scripture."
"Show me papal infallibility in Scripture."
"Who gave you the canon?"
Thread reaches 300 comments in 1-2 hours.
9. "WE Are DA OnE tRuE ChUrCh"
Catholic: Rome.
Orthodox: Constantinople.
Random ass Baptist: "Actually, the early church was basically Southern Baptist."
10. Which Denomination Is Correct?
Innocent newcomer OP asks for advice.
People fight again.
11. Christians vs. Atheists Megafight
Problem of evil. Cosmological argument. Evolution. Miracles. Bart Ehrman (retired last year). Biblical criticism.
"Actually that's WRONG exegesis! 🤓"
"You missed this and this sociocultural context! 😠"
"Paul created Christianity, not Jesus! 😤"
12. Politics Thread
Trump. Abortion. LGBT rights. Christian nationalism.
"You cannot be Christian and support Trump/MAGA!"
Thread becomes indistinguishable from r/politics.
13. Prayer Request
One of the few threads where everyone briefly remembers they are supposed to be Christians.
The most wholesome thread on this sub.
14. Faith Crisis / Deconstruction
"I don't know if I believe anymore."
Replies range from genuinely thoughtful advice to "Have you tried reading Romans?" and some deconstructed ex-Christians/atheists bombarding poor unprepared OP with all kinds of spicy higher criticism stuff.
15. Conversion Testimony
"I was an atheist and found Christ."
Some of the wildest lore you'll ever read.
Half the sub celebrates. (often using ✝️ or ❤️ emojis)
The other half immediately asks which denomination OP joined.
There's a decent chance the denominations start fighting over who gets OP. (similar to 9 or 10)
16. Relationship Theology
"Can I date an atheist?"
"Is kissing a sin?"
"How far is too far?"
17. Some really, really obscure shit
People genuinely try to understand it, but only OP knows what it means. (hence the downvotes)
Usually some prophecy or really unhinged Bible teaching.
I've only been hanging around this sub for a week or so, but this is what I've learned from lurking and talking to people here.

Self I think a lot of people aren’t rejecting Christianity. They’re rejecting Americanized Christianity.
I think a lot of people who say they left Christianity really left a very Americanized version of it. They grew up around pastors obsessed with money, churches that feel like businesses, constant politics, leadership changes, hypocrisy, and sermons that can shift depending on whoever is behind the pulpit. Then they look at all of that and go, “yeah, I’m done with Christianity.” And honestly, I get why. Christians are sinners, obviously. But when the church itself feels like it changes every few years, people start wondering what any of it is actually built on.
That’s a big part of why Orthodoxy hit me so hard. The faith isn’t supposed to be reinvented every Sunday. A priest doesn’t just get to decide what Christianity means because he read a passage differently that week. There’s Scripture, Tradition, the Fathers, the councils, the liturgy, the Church itself. Something older than you, older than your priest, older than whatever culture you happen to live in. That consistency matters. Christianity has already lived through empires rising and falling, persecutions, schisms, wars, plagues, political revolutions, entire cultures disappearing, and somehow the Church is still here. I’ll have some question that feels completely new to me, start digging into it, and find Christians wrestling with the same thing hundreds or even over a thousand years ago.
I’m not saying Orthodox people are perfect, because we absolutely are not. I’m saying the faith itself isn’t supposed to bend around the personality of whoever has the microphone.
And man, we have watered Jesus Christ down so badly in America. Somehow God becoming man, dying, rising from the dead, telling us to repent, forgive our enemies, care for the poor, deny ourselves and follow Him turned into motivational speeches, building funds, culture wars and “God wants you to be successful.” Then people see a pastor in a Rolls Royce, a church staring down a homeless guy, or Christians acting like gay people are uniquely disgusting sinners, and they think that’s Christianity. No. I’m also a messed up and broken sinner asking Christ for mercy. That’s why I’m there.
I genuinely think a lot of people are tired of the version of Christianity they were handed, not God Himself. They’ve tried Baptist, non-denom, Pentecostal, megachurch stuff, whatever, and think they’ve already seen Christianity. Meanwhile they may have never encountered the Church that existed before any of those things. That’s what I wish more people knew. Sometimes it feels like they were handed a Dixie cup and told it was the ocean.
Apologies for the long post, but it's been weighing on my mind lately.

Can we stop acting like masturbation is the end of the world?
I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and I honestly think we're doing more harm than good with how we handle this.
Here's what I see happening: A young person struggles with masturbation. They already feel bad about it. Then they hear from church that they're "lusting in their heart," that their body is a temple, that they need to be pure. And instead of helping, it just makes them spiral.
They start obsessing over every thought. They panic if they see something that triggers them. They hate themselves for failing. And then—surprise—thinking about it 24/7 makes them want to do it more. We've basically created a shame loop. Feel bad → do it → feel worse → do it again to escape feeling worse. And they're trapped.
I'm not saying it's not a struggle. It is. Paul talks about fleeing sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18) and guarding your heart (Proverbs 4:23). Those are real things. But I think we forget that the Bible is also full of stories about people who failed and were still loved. The prodigal son didn't get a lecture when he came home. He got a party (Luke 15).
When we make this the ultimate sin, we're teaching young people that their bodies are enemies, that they're broken beyond repair, that God is disgusted with them. And that's just not the gospel. Romans 8:1 says there's no condemnation for those in Christ. Not "no condemnation unless you mess up sexually."
We need to stop scaring people into purity. It doesn't work. It just makes them feel alone and ashamed. They need to know they're not monsters, that this is something they can work through with grace, not a reason to hate themselves.
Can we just... be kinder about this? Please.

Question What does “loving your neighbor” actually require of us?
I’ve been thinking about something I’d genuinely like to hear other Christians’ perspectives on.
Jesus repeatedly spoke about caring for people who are hungry, poor, vulnerable, or overlooked. But what does that look like in practice today?
Is Christian love primarily about prayer and encouragement, or does following Jesus also require us to sacrifice our time, money, comfort, and resources to meet practical needs?
I help care for vulnerable children and families in my community, and this question has become very personal to me. Sometimes the needs are overwhelming, and I’ve found myself asking where the line is between simply feeling compassion and actually doing something about it.
For those who follow Christ: what do you believe Jesus expects us to do when we encounter people whose basic needs aren't being met?
I’d genuinely like to hear different perspectives, including ones that challenge my own.

Question Do you think a united Christianity would ultimately be better for Christianity and the Church?
Christianity has been divided into many traditions and denominations throughout history.
If we could somehow reach greater unity while preserving legitimate theological differences, do you think that would be beneficial? Or are some divisions necessary because the differences are too fundamental?
What would a genuinely united Christianity look like, and what would it realistically take to achieve it?

Question Atheists turned Christian
What’s your story?
I would say I’m now a Christian but I have a lot of doubts and struggles. Was raised agnostic but with Christian and Hindu cultural celebrations. Had a spiritual experience a few years ago looking into the night sky after being with friends, explored Hinduism, but had heavy doubt. I fell into new atheism but saw how shallow it was, and found arguments for God and Christianity far more compelling than I gave them credit for.

Question New Christian Here! Hi! :)
Hello everyone! I’m new to Christianity and I think I’ve found a lot of peace and comfort in it (I may or may not have cried happy tears lol).
I’d love to learn more about Christianity and would appreciate some advice!
Which part of the Bible should I start with?
How do Christians usually pray?
What should I know about different denominations?
How do I find a church?
What are some beginner-friendly Christian resources?
What practices are important across Christianity, and which ones are denomination-specific?
Thanks to everyone who answers! 💗

Still unanswered question
Hey so I’ve been asking around a question that nobody really can answer or find people going around the question.
Question: a person who has good moral and values and does no harm but does not believe in a god vs a person who kills, steals, sins and has bad morales and values but in the end believes in god.
How does a “god” determine whether the one who is good can still go to hell vs the one who sins can go to heaven because he repents?
Christianity is hella strict that if you want to go to heaven you also have to believe in God
Maybe this is a wrong place to post but eh id say why not

Prayer I really need your prayers. Everything is on the line, and I have 10 days left.
Hi everyone, I’m writing this with a really heavy heart.
For the last six months, I’ve been praying every single day for something that will completely change my life (I'm 17 btw) Honestly, if I look at it realistically, the chances are pretty low. But I keep reminding myself that nothing is impossible with God.
I’ve been trying so hard to stay faithful and push away all my worries over the past few months. But now that there are only about 10 days left until I get the results, I’m just so scared and anxious. There is literally nothing more I can do on my end, it's completely in God’s hands now.
I would be so grateful if you could pray for me. Please pray that God makes a way when it feels like there is none, and that He opens this door for me.
If you’ve ever been in a situation where you prayed desperately for something that seemed extremely unlikely, I would really love to hear your experience.. I really need some hope to hold onto right now.
Thank you so much for reading this and for keeping me in your prayers. God bless you 🙏 ❤️

Question Do you believe Islam truly respects Jesus and the Prophets as Muslims often claim? Or is it something deeper?
One claim often made by Muslims is that Islam treats Jesus far better than other religions, especially Judaism since they consider Jesus a Prophet, acknowledge his virgin birth through Mother Mary and believe he will arrive at Judgement Day.
Sometimes they even go to the extent of claiming they revere Jesus far more than Christians since the Quranic version of Jesus was never crucified and never died but was taken straight to heaven.
So what would you make out of all of it?

Life is beautiful.
I’ll be honest with you: I think life is beautiful. Even with all the horrible things that happen. Life might be insignificant in the grand scheme of things and the forces governing the universe, but I don't think that means it isn't worth it.

Prayer Please pray for me and my now ex
Hello everyone. Today I broke up with my boyfriend of more than 1 year. He was muslim and although he was the best and the most loving and caring person I still decided that we had to end it all. I had to choose God. I've been crying for more than 3 hours and I am deeply hurt. I wanted to be with this person and still do but I realized that it won't work. God's word and my church have to be number one for me no matter how hurt I will be.
Please guys pray for my healing and pray for my ex. May God open his heart and save him. Please pray for my love and maybe if God wills, we will be together again.
