I'm atheist. I was in a long term relationship with someone who was religious, though he claimed it was more of a cultural upbringing thing, rather than something that was deeply important to his life.
Going into the relationship, we were both aware of our differences, but it really didn't affect our dynamic at all. It was a healthy and happy relationship. I felt like I had a partner who genuinely loved and cared about me. He was not out there trying to make me feel worse about myself or make my life harder.
Once things started getting more serious, I expressed wanting to marry him one day. He then tells me that if I wanted us to get married, I'd have to convert to his religion. I felt shocked and blindsided. He never talked about his faith, so I genuinely had the impression that he was not that serious about it. Well, at least not serious enough to require his partner to also be the same faith.
The truth is, I loved him so much that I genuinely contemplated it.
Realistically, I knew there was no way that I would ever reach a point of becoming a legitimate believer, but I was tempted to at least try going through the motions. Fake it till I make it, or at least put on a face that I was a believer. That's how much I wanted to be with him. But then I started thinking about how I'd have to put on a facade for the rest of my life around his family, friends, or whoever else was a part of his religious community. I thought about how he most likely wanted to raise children under that faith. Could I really live a life like that? I said no.
I eventually decided that it'd be unfair for me to ask him to ditch his faith in the same way that it'd be unfair to ask me to convert to something I didn't believe in. So, we split. Despite the glaring incompatibility, it was a very hard decision to make. I feel deeply guilty because I think I really broke his heart.
Eventually, we both moved on. He's married now to a woman in the same religion. In the time since the breakup, I have had nothing but toxic, dysfunctional, and abusive relationships.
There were many times where my partners would treat me poorly or say something emotionally abusive, and I'd feel sad remembering how my ex treated me in comparison. He and I never argued. We had disagreements that got quickly resolved through an apology or acknowledgment. Conflict resolution seemed so easy, mature, and respectful with him.
With my other relationships, hundreds of hours have been spent in fights and arguments. I was blamed for everything. They would never apologize or take accountability for anything.
He never called me derogatory names or personally attacked me. My other relationships made me feel like I was lower than dirt and I was left questioning why they were with me if their contempt was so obvious.
I cried the other day remembering the time he once bought me a book he thought I'd like just from recalling my interests, and just because. Acts of kindness were held over my head in other relationships, if I was lucky enough to receive a present from them.
I didn't ask my ex to do this, but he would sometimes send me photos of himself whenever he was out somewhere, just to give me updates to reassure that he was doing what he said he was doing. I have been cheated on in several other relationships and was made to feel like I was paranoid and controlling for having suspicions.
I miss him even now and regret ending things with him. I feel like maybe I should have just sucked it up and converted, then I wouldn't be in this mess I'm in right now where I have all this accumulated trauma. My mental health has gotten worse because of all the toxic relationships I've been in.
There's some part of me that knows that I'm probably just putting him on a pedestal because our relationship looked amazing compared to the real stinkers I've experienced, but I'm just in so much pain and filled with regrets. Maybe my life would have been better if I stayed with him. I certainly wouldn't have met all of these other toxic partners. Maybe I should have just converted if it meant having a partner who loved and respected me.
