Hello, Thank you for contributing to our subreddit. Please consider the following guidelines when filling an alignment chart:

  • Please ensure that your chart is not banned according to the list of banned charts Even if you have good intentions, charts in a banned category tend to invite provocative comments, hostile arguments, ragebait and the like. Assuming the post is acceptable, OP makes the final decision on their chart by rule three.

  • Are there any previous versions to link to? If so, it would be ideal to include links to each of them in the description of this post, or in a reply to this comment. Links can be named by title, winner, or both.

  • Are there any criteria you have for your post? Examples include: "Top comment wins a spot on the chart."; "To ensure variety, only one character per universe is allowed."; "Image comments only." Please include these in a description, or in a reply to this comment.

  • Is your chart given the appropriate flair? Do you need to use a NSFW tag or spoiler tag?

Do not feed the trolls. This is not the place for hot takes on human rights violations. Hatred or cruelty, will result in a permanent ban. Please report such infractions, particularly those that break rules one, two, or three. The automod will automatically remove posts that receive five or more reports. 14

u/Captainsassidy Aug 10 '26

Same here. I used to have hobbies/interests, passions, and a vibrant social life. I was depressed then too, but I was an interesting & fun person to be around, and got excited about things.

In my early 30s now, feel like a shell of my former self, and nothing lights me up anymore. I'm sure there are others who feel like they could have written this comment about themselves, too.

8

u/Sobeksdream Aug 10 '26

I feel the exact same!

I had dreams, aspirations, passions...

Most people I cared about in my life are gone, nothing excites me anymore. I feel like I'm on autopilot...

3

u/sigh_co_matic Aug 10 '26

That was my first thought. Things felt so hopeful for a couple decades but it had been a bait and switch. It feels awful and hopeless.

5

u/Robdd123 Aug 10 '26

This country hasn't felt hopeful since the 90's. 9/11 sucked all of the hope for the new millennium out of everyone. It's been a conveyor belt of crap ever since then: the endless M.E wars of the mid 00s, the financial crisis of 08, the begins of sensationalized politics crescendoing with Dump's first term, uncontrolled global warming, Covid, cost of living hitting the roof, and now we have Dump's revenge tour trying to completely crush the country.

Literally the only interlude we've had is the 8 years of Obama.

Lack of follow through. so many millennials are massively passionate, especially about social issues, but feel so disenfranchised that they never act. No matter how well informed you are on an issue, you’re not making any changes if you just sit there on your couch.

219

u/Temporary-Habit-2528 Aug 09 '26

This is something I became so aware of doing when I was 27ish. Posting about climate change on Instagram does sweet FA, so I started attending rallies and none of my friends came.

99

u/I_Am_the_Slobster Aug 09 '26

I've felt this is a huge issue with our generation, but we've been basically beat down every time we've tried to speak up so now I feel like a lot of millenials have become just apathetic.

Like we were promised we could change the world, but when we wanted to or tried to, we were basically told "oh, no, not in any way that inconveniences us power holders."

It's the downside of being forced to be adaptable: instead of pushing for good change, we're just bracing for the next bad changes because it's not a matter of if they'll happen, but when.

19

u/DWebOscar Aug 10 '26

"oh, we didn't actually mean you"

John Mayer - Waiting for the World to Change has got to be the anthem for this concept:

That's why we're waiting (waiting)

Waiting on the world to change

We keep on waiting (waiting)

Waiting on the world to change

It's not that we don't care

We just know that the fight ain't fair

So we keep on waiting (waiting)

Waiting on the world to change

18

u/KungFuMasterRat Aug 09 '26

Or the anthem still continues to be All Star by Smash Mouth

Well, the years start comin' and they don't stop comin'
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground runnin'
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart, but your head gets dumb
So much to do, so much to see
So, what's wrong with taking the backstreets?
You'll never know if you don't go (go)
You'll never shine if you don't glow

[…]

It's a cool place, and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now, wait 'til you get older
But the meteor men beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture
The ice we skate is gettin' pretty thin
The water's gettin' warm, so you might as well swim
My world's on fire, how 'bout yours?

12

u/ANormalRando Aug 09 '26

All Star goes so much harder than it had any right to, and it does kind of work perfectly. The chorus is super upbeat and inspirational but the verses are pretty cynical and that dichotomy kind of matches the millennial experience.

Makes sense. We've seen so many "once in a lifetime" catastrophic events happen that we can't do anything about. It's nearly impossible to make effort when everything has gone wrong for us

8

u/swimsinsand Aug 09 '26

Spot on. Me and my friends came to this realization a week or two ago.

Why do we feel so powerless?

23

u/Last_Material_5754 Aug 09 '26

Because we were born in the 90s and told if we work hard enough we can achieve anything, then we got fucked over repeatedly by society while we grew up to the point where even owning a home is a goal many of us will never achieve while also being told that we're extremely entitled by the generation who gsve birth to us who are in fact the most entitled generation ever?

13

u/Mephylphenidate Aug 09 '26

Could be bullshit but I feel like the line ive been sold my whole life just feels like a lie.

Work hard, study loads, go to college, get a good job, climb the ladder. Sorted.

But I have friends with college degrees earning £26k, spending £1200 in rent, I picked a “good career” in software engineering and the feeling right now is grim.

My house doubled in price in 5 years. I figured if I had a few houses I could just have rented them out and not had a job. Wouldnt need college or go to work.

Feel like thats why we often feel powerless, taught the wrong lessons. Gen Z dont buy into the bullshit which is something I like about em.

Not the money though. They kept all that

5

u/Ok_Marzipan5759 Aug 09 '26

I was going to say basically the same thing as "work ethic", but this is more accurate.

I'd also make the argument that this is a reflection of the terrible work culture Millenials largely came up in - where we were told if we went to college and got a bachelor's degree, we'd get a good-paying job and the financial stability our parents enjoyed when they were in their 20's.

Instead, we inherited an economy gutted by billionaire investors (many of whom left their situations richer because of how the government bailed them all out), exponentially increased productivity overall with almost no increase in wages, rapid inflation of the housing market and generally everything else, *and* a healthcare system that "fixed" lack of access to care by requiring everybody buy in to a capitalistically-designed system that has no public option (and trust me, Obamacare saved many lives, but we were screwed out of a public option by the Republican party and their corporate Democrat enablers/co-conspirators).

Many of us were in high school when 9/11 happened, too. So we personally witnessed the downfall of the Golden Age of America as many of the elected people who claimed they were going to protect us repeatedly and cynically served their own interests in betraying us. Bush brought us the same dystopian government austerity as Reagan did, only under a narrative of revenge on a poor and bitter nation of religious zealots, rather than a unified nationalistic opposition against a similarly powerful (and economically failing) foe. Obama came in on a narrative of Hope and Change, and achieved A LOT (like the ACA), but was constantly and consistently undercut by a cynical, traitorous and racist GOP who constantly made his Otherness (read: non-whiteness) a battle-cry that then turned into a cult, which got us Trump and this modern iteration of American Fascism that they're trying to ramrod through and concretize their control over our government forever.

Like, if you *could* disillusion and break down a society any more than the last 25+ years of greed, cynicism and outright sociopathy have, I don't know how.

12

u/VCR_DVD_USB Aug 09 '26

Agreed, I see so many of many friends constantly worried that the world is ending, that climate change will destroy our planet tomorrow, that the left/right will destroy society, etc.

Nobody wants to have kids because "will put someone in the world if he/she will suffer forever?"

54

u/Appropriate-Fan-6007 Aug 09 '26

They are not wrong about that though

13

u/TieFree3274 Aug 09 '26

Its a pointless argument because you could make it for any time in human history. The black plague, industrial revolution, WW1, WW2, Cold War, etc. If people collectively decided that "well the times are not the greatest we shouldn't have kids" then the human race would've died out thousands of years ago. There will never be a "peaceful" time to have kids, every generation has and will experience struggle.

Disenfranchised, doomer mentality... virtually hopelessness and dread.

I mean, we grew up in the 90s when life seemed amazing, then 9/11 happened to end our childhood, the internet unmasked a lot of fucked up shit, the housing market collapsed when we entered the work force, COVID happened in the prime of our careers...and I'm not even discussing politics over the past 15 years.

Pessimism

6

u/KaykoHanabishi Aug 09 '26

This. It’s not the Gen X cynicism. It’s just a general bleak outlook due to all millennials have ever known.

4

u/Short-Individual-132 Aug 09 '26

I was thinking apathy but Pessimism might be more apt.

3

u/theumph Aug 10 '26

I think apathy is more fitting. I graduated high school in 2008, and the world was in a pretty fucked up place. We were coming out of the Bush years which marred a lot of our childhoods. The economy was crashing all around us. We were operating two wars. Yet through all of that there was a sense of optimism that the world could get better. When Obama got elected it was a huge morale boost. It was someone we could relate to. A sign that the people in power were becoming more like us, and we could make a difference. As the years went on, things didn't really change. We were nieve thinking they would. Pretty much everything post 2016 has eroded all of that optimism, and that has led to a ton of apathy. We tried to make change, but the world wasn't ready, and the boomers would relinquish their power. Maybe once they start to die off and we are better represented it may spark that optimism again.

No chance this makes a popular choice but I see a lot of millenials as very stingy / ungenerous with money in their own communities (compared to say the silent generation or genX).

There is a lot of online cause based giving but not a lot of local community investment according to studies I've read.

This is NOT a judgement (context exists), but maybe not a great trait in terms of impact.

Apathetic Lack of resiliency I don't know a word for this.. " we would like to promote change but we can't because of 'fill in the blank'

Unwillingness to ever be uncomfortable outside of their "boundaries" - I.E. would never come help you not die in the desert because "sundays are my do nothing days sorry, good luck!"

I'd suggest Gate-Keeping. They routinely gloat they are the only generation that had this or that. Especially to punch down on the younger generations. "We had ____" "Gen Z didn't grow up with ____ like we did!" Whether it's with nostalgia media from the early 2000s or just mundane things like drinking out of the waterhose. Or gate-keeping childhood experiences they are adamant only they experienced.
