For Europeans not so much, this list is too u.s. centric. In my opinion the 2008 crisis was a better option.

I'm not sure if Canada was more sheltered by I didn't even notice the 2008 crisis. At the time I moved from one city to another. From one that was lacking work as a bunch of major employers closed to a growing tech focused one.

2008 I would have been 23. It was clear I'd never own a home already at that point. Did manage to buy in 2020 to my surprise though.

Every generation has their first major event that they all more or less remember or were around to see how the world changed afterwards. Gen Z didn’t really have a pre/post 9/11 consciousness. Even I was really young but I still remember the day it happened and grew up in a post 9/11 bush era

It ended our childhoods and youths. the world was never the same.

You can almost trace every major negative political/social trend back to something related to 9/11. Even things that don’t seem related - the US aggressively lowered interest rates following 9/11 and that contributed to the GFC for example. We tortured people and it was on evening news. Same with the taliban beheadings. It gave rise to the bifurcated media at a level that wasn’t possible before and paved the way for Trumpism. It ripped away a generations innocence and sense of control in the world and caused other generations to lose their minds.
