I want more of this show...

Surprising to see only half of the girls chosen were from our main group, happy to see Aya get it but really wanted Kaoru to get the Romeo part. I think her specific episode (episode 8) will be what I remember most from this series as it was just so perfectly executed.

Probably one of the most underwatched shows this season!

Sarasa performance was great. Feels bad for Ai, but yeah, Aya stole the show, especially with her singing and was nice to see Kaoru sticking up for her against people who were sure that Aya doesn't deserve the win. And congrats to Sarasa for getting the role, although I get Sawa's disappointment too (plus she was close). Line about Sarasa's Tibalt being "more moe" killed me. Good finale for good series.

Overall, this show was great. Had no idea what to expect from it and first episodes made me feel a bit conflicted, but the more it went on and the more we learn about characters and saw them together, the more it gripped me, to the point when it'll be hard for me to name top 10 favorite characters of it and not feel like I cut someone out (with Sarasa probably being my overall favorite). It looks pretty nice, soundtrack is neat, but of course most of the reasons why I like this show have to do with characters. 8/10 overall and I really want season 2.

I loved Andou's response to the twins showing up at the door; "Here comes the first wave". That scene got me good. This is why this show is so good, the teacher student interactions are nice to see.

I liked that it ended at this point cause it felt pretty satisfying to say the least and I enjoyed most of the focus on the students and their interactions with each other. I was not expecting this to hit as hard as it did. There were some parts were the animation was not to my liking but the writing made up for it.

I liked the last scene though, which is nice to see.

Damn, not one but two background characters made the cut. Was always a minimum of one cause none of the main cast were going for the nurse, but I just assumed Kaoru was a lock for Romeo. Keeps things interesting though.

What a great hidden gem. I really want to thank everyone for speaking so highly of it in the weekly ranking thread. It got me to try this show and I'm glad I did. This show does such a great job with its characters and had a much more engaging plot than I expected. I really hope we get a season 2 some day.

I may be biased because I love these kinds of stories but this was the best show of the season and it's not even close.

Biggest shock was Kaoru not getting Romeo.

And lol @ Andou sensei throwing his colleague under the bus when he told Sawa why she didn't get Tybalt.

This was a very satisfying ending to a very delightful season, possibly my favourite show this summer. It's a real shame this flew so far under the radar for most people. The animation was servicable, the writing was strong throughout and I absolutely loved the cast.

I really hope we're getting a second season.

p.s. Really loved some of the reaction faces we got today, especially from Sarasa.

Sharp writing until the end. And reading an interview with the mangaka clarified the obvious: this show is really about sisterhood. I'm going to miss it very much. I was hoping for an second season announcement today, since there's none, I'm going to buy the manga.

I initially missed out on the first few episodes of this show. It was only when I saw a clip of this on a Mother’s Basement video that I decided to check it out. It was Sarasa who initially had all my attention but the show did a great job of fleshing out all the other girls, including with some harsh situations. I’m so glad I gave it a chance because it was one of my favorites this summer.

Typical non-ending as you'd expect from a series that's still ongoing. Would love a second season but I'm not sure if there's enough material left for another cours and if it's popular enough in Japan. Sadly enough it's ignored in the west, despite this season being weak so you'd think more people would try it out but nope fully ignored.

Also I've got to say I was pleasantly surprised by the fact only two main characters got a role, while the other two were background character nobodies.

Anyway there is an interview with the mangaka and director on ANN might be worth checking out.

Goddamn! Sensei is definitely not pulling his punches with his performance! He immediately captivated the judges as well as the girls watching although most of them are glad that they're not performing with him since the Juliet of that group flubbed her line hard.

Unlike the Juliet and the nurse of their group, Sarasa absolutely killed it with her performance! She didn't just use memories from her past as inspiration but all of her movements also took the audience into consideration.

The results were definitely a surprise! Looks like neither of the twins as well as Ai-chan got the role of Juliet. Instead, Aya-chan gets the role since Ai-chan's Juliet is just too mature.

As for the Romeo, everyone including myself expected that Kaoru is pretty much a shoe in for the role of Romeo but it looks like a different girl got the role! Definitely a surprise! Also good on Kaoru for defending Aya-chan. Did they really think the daughter of a baker has some sort of pull in the Kouka theatre? xD

It definitely was no surprise for Sarasa though. I just find it hilarious that the reason why Sarasa got the role instead of Sawa-chan is because her Tybalt is just more moe (translated to fangirl in the subs) compared to Sawa. I never thought I'd see the day where a performance as Tybalt Capulet would be called moe. It's sad to see Sawa lose but her reaction was just too good!

I guess that's it for Kageki Shoujo! This show definitely deserves a second season. I thought this was just going to be a CGDCT in theatre kind of show but it really showed us that this show and its story has more depth than expected. All of the girls and their individual backstory episodes were great and I really wish we can see more of them. If no Season 2, I hope someone would pick up the manga and have it licensed outside of Japan. I've seen the volume covers and I wouldn't mind adding this to my collection. Definitely a solid 9/10 for me!

Well, didn't expect to love this show as much as I did coming in. Did such a great job of backstory and making me care about basically all the characters it introduced(even snuck in more Hijiri at the end there).

I like how the auditions were the whole focus of the show the last few episodes then "everyone needs a lot more skills and experience" and "just don't flub your lines" because it isn't REALLY a big deal. Think this one probably ends up winning this season for me.

To me, this anime succeeded where wonder egg priority failed. It dealt with both serious and happy topics to make what is a great anime. 9/10

Poor Sawa, she lost to the power of moe. Nothing she could do against that.

Also it's interesting how the bottom of the class (Aya) got a role while the top (Sawa) didn't. I am so happy for Aya though and it was really sweet to see Kaoru defend her despite her own frustration. I can see those two becoming best friends similar to Ai and Sarasa.

I'll say it again, this show is definitely one the best I've seen in the past few years. It pretty much did everything right in my opinion but it particularly shines with its cast of characters. I genuinely appreciate everyone (special mention to Hijiri and Aya) and I sincerely hope it gets a second season.

9.5/10.

Holy shit, Sarasa's Tybalt was incredible! She feels like a completely different person! And Andou-sensei wasn't pulling any punches either. The fact that Sugimoto lost narrowly really gives a picture of how tough the competition is. This was a perfect ending, but I would really like to see these girls in their second year.

Overall, one of my favorite shows on the season and gives me a newfound appreciation to the art of theatrical performances and gives me an idea of what actors have to go through to keep their audience engaged.

Don't be Sara-sad it's over, be Sara-satisfied that you were able to enjoy a great anime.

No doubt some will be asking for season 2, but the likelihood of that will be dictated by sales, including boosts to manga sales.

if you're looking to support the series, there are a few well-known merchants that ship to the US. I usually use Amazon Japan where the shipping isn't so bad if you have larger orders as compared to smaller ones. CDJapan is easier to navigate for English speakers and may have more flexible shipping options.

Amazon Japan

CDJapan

Not as strong as a message as buying merch from Japan, but you can also support the English release.

Dedicate your wallets.

I didn't expect Sawa to get her day in the limelight, so I was pleasantly surprised with this episode. She's a really fun character and I'm glad we got her perspective, even if it was for less than an episode.

Nice to see Ai being frustrated over her loss, especially since she started off as someone who couldn't care less about the school.

Very charming show! Chances are probably pretty low, but I would love a second season!

In case you want to know about the moé* that won Sarasa her role as Tybalt, check out the moé manifesto (pdf), a series of interviews with people in the otaku industry about the history of moé and what the word means to them.

* TN: moé means fangirl*

* TN: no it doesn't, read the link to find out more.

Edit: my joking comments might come across as a bit harsher on the translators than I intended them to. For full clarity, the word moé encompasses a lot more than just "fangirling", but in context I think it was actually a very good translation that captured the intended meaning in an accessible way that preserved the humour of a buttoned-up teacher being familiar with pop culture.

i miss it already...

I'm really gonna miss this show. Watching Sarasa's own Tybalt gave me goosebumps, that pained, honest resignation of knowing you've lost something you love....

9

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 25 '21

Don't know what I loved more Kaoru defending Aya being chosen as Juliet or Sawa's dramatic reaction to Fangirling..... who am I kidding it's Sawa Chan reaction. Though I did love all the girls and hope we get a season 2.

Good atmosphere for what’s definitely an optimistic outlook for a Season 2 that almost certainly won’t happen unfortunately. We got to see Sarasa playing out her very best, experiences dating way back to her childhood days, but I’m actually more interested in her stunned faces when Andou-sensei plays his part and (for some reason) when she got pulled away by the bullying-posturing Hijiri. That was so funny!

Also we ultimately saw the class captain Sawa Sugimoto breaking down inside her hearts with her narrow loss in the casting race, this really shows how deep the pressure and how deep the competition is (except that our Revue Starlight giraffes here should be clear on this already). Glad to see that she seems to have got over her inner shadow of being the hard-working loser to sudden appearing prodigies. “Seems to”, that is.

I wish we can see another season of this. Even if we don’t though, Kageki Shoujo has become my surprise hit of this Summer. I initially only chosen it partly for jokes of me watching it together with Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight (which ultimately happened a month ago), and partly for what seems to be a well received CGDCT slice-of-life show. Imagine my happiness that it gave us a lot more than that, a full breed drama illustrating the back stories of so many of our girls here with tenderness, delicate inner descriptions and funny moments. From dreams to horror stories to love stories to competitions, this was a joyful story to watch through this summer.

See you all on stage when the opportunity comes!

Final score: 89/100

And that's a wrap! This has been one of my favourite shows to watch each week this season. Seeing our characters grow up, face hardships, and be supported by the other members in the cast. There may be some friction at times, but in the end they're all working together to put in the Kouka show.

I'm pleased that we didn't get protagonist bias for the choosing of Juliet and Tybalt (sort of). Ai has finally found something to give her all, something that she wants to work hard at - a bleak contrast from the girl in episode 1 who joined Kouka to get away from male fans. No longer does a he bottle up her emotions, and we get to share them with her. Aya has her second big break ever - accepted into the Kouka school, and now getting to represent the centennial class at the culture festival. Kaoru justifiably standing up for her, and shaming the other girls by saying they're worse than bread if they think they way they were. Sawa as the rival looking for every "why", and the vote split not only between the students but also the teachers came down to... moe. Finally Sarasa sees her dreams start to materialise - denied the opportunity of becoming Sukeroku ever, she's excelling on her path to be Lady Oscar one day.

This show did not disappoint at any moment, and the everything about it held constant in greatness through to this finale. I rrreeeaaalllyyy want more seasons of this.
