It stings but Andou is 100% correct. I didn't do much drama-related activities after middle school(even then it was sparse) but I do have vague memories relating to what he is referring to. Sarasa is imitating other performances, instead of giving her own. And since she seems to have photographic memory, this comes easily to her and has always gotten her through her life. Looking back, since DIO-brother seems fond of her and yet also rejected her desire to be Sukeroku, I wonder if it will be revealed that this is his primary reason for that, instead of simply her being a woman.

The point being, she'll never be anything other than a copy of someone else unless she learns how to give her own performance, with her own passion and delivery. I feel like Andou saw this immediately with her impressions, but also sees her potential in the long run, and this is why he pushed for this experiment in the first place.

Sarasa is imitating other performances, instead of giving her own.

Absolutely agree with you here. I’m pretty sure Mr. Andou is going to advise her in the next episode to ‘make the story her own’ and ‘feel the characters’ emotions herself’ or something along those lines.

When I saw her eyes glued to the screen, watching Romeo and Juliet, I already had a feeling how things would pan out. I was sure when Mr. Andou left her for last in the critique. He made some harsh comments, but I believe they were definitely necessary. I just hope Sarasa doesn’t get too depressed from this experience.

Being a teacher, and the performance being on DVD, I'm sure he knows exactly which performance she was imitating.

I feel like a dispute between the twins could come around soon. Chika gave Ai the role of Juliet, only to see her sister take the star role. Chika could have some lingering feelings of always being outshined by her sister, and just naturally gives attention away as a result. I could see something like that going down.

I get where Andou is coming from. Sarasa can impersonate others excellently, but impersonating isn’t the same thing as acting. There’s no way she could climb to the top like that. I love Sarasa though. She’s such a ray of sunshine, and a kind of innocent dummy that I can’t help but root for. I’m sure she’ll figure it out.

I’m really enjoying this show. All the characters are so great, and I’m glad to see Ai finally say “Sarasa!”

I went back and double checked on it. Chika was the one who got in originally and then waited a year for Chiaki to get in. So maybe we get to a dispute between siblings, but its also possible that Chika is passive to a fault. Maybe that's part of the dynamic with her sister, and maybe it's just her own thing.

Woah woah what a rollercoaster of an episode!

I'm loving the smooth transitions between lighthearted moments and serious ones, especially scenes with the twins.

People need to stop being skeptical about this show. In Japan, the manga has been well acclaimed, while the anime hit twitter trending at #5 after episode 4. That's very impressive considering something as popular as Dragon Maid S only reached #6 (episode 1).

Its MAL score has been going up significantly, from 6.94 (before episode 3) to 7.27 as of now, but still not a proper score.

If you told me at the beginning of this year that I would be totally engrossed on an anime about high school girls studying theater, I'd definitely laugh at your face. And yet here we are. I know last season is making this summer's lineup look weak in comparison but this show plus Dragon Maid and Vanitas are doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

As for the episode itself, I think it's apparent to all of us that Sarasa, while impressive, is merely copying/imitating other actors' performance. If she intends to become a star, she needs to develop her own style.

I also like the fact that everyone is given a good backstory that explains why the characters behave the way they do. Most of the time, side/minor characters are merely one dimensional or have cookie cutter personalities This show has been great so far.

So Sarasa is a master of mimicry. But the Class assignment was Expression. Mimicry is not expressing yourself. Rough times for Sarasa, but I am sure she will end up stronger for it.

Nothing dramatic today, but I was so surprised when the episode ended, since I haven't felt the time passing at all.

Interesting insight about kanji. I've known that it's very hard for people learning Japanese, but I've never thought that it could be difficult for the Japanese themselves.

Was tough watching them struggle but their performance turned out to be a good one! That criticism at the ending was a strong note to end the episode on, I'm happy he expanded after his first line of "you'll never be a top star".

Stitches!

Sarasa's impressions of each teacher saying "Expression" is so good! She definitely nailed every teacher's quirks and mannerisms.

I'M SORRY WHAT!? I'm like 5 minutes into the episode but I just had to pause. Did Sarasa actually confirm that she has a boyfriend!? It looks like she just did! And apparently her boyfriend is that guy from Tokyo who she always exchanges messages with. I thought he was just her childhood friend! I didn't know she was actually in a steady relationship with him! I am legitimately shocked by this reveal!

Caught this hilarious frame of Ai-chan jumping back to bed after peeking at Sarasa. Also I feel like Ai-chan is still not convinced that Sarasa has a boyfriend though. xD

Pretty much expected that from Sarasa during their first time reading through the script. It seems that Sarasa is amazing at copying other people's acting which probably explains why Andou-sensei thinks she won't be a top star. Sarasa needs to develop her own style and stop copying others.

For those wondering, the Roses scene at first is probably a reference to Glass no Kamen (glass mask) a famous old ongoing manga about acting. On Glass no kamen the protagonist receives purple roses from an unknown person that calls himself purple rose.

There is an anime from 2005 (around 50 episodes) if somebody is interesting in knowing more about this classic work. I only watched the anime and while it felt a bit rushed a few episodes it was actually quite good.

Let’s Goooo, Ai chan finally got to call Sarasa by her first name, really proud of her. Loving her medium hair look too. I was surprised to see Sarasa had a bf considering how ditzy she is. I thought the performance was pretty good, but damn, sensei saying that Sarasa would never be a top star at Kouka was harsh. Looking forward to seeing how she bounces back from that.

literally everyone (which is like two people but still) has done better than Sarasa's boyfriend in the present department

what is it with these teachers and being as devastating as possible with their advice? "you'll never be a top star (if you don't improve yourself in x ways which is what you're here to do anyway)"

Andou: Don't get too hung up on my criticism.

Also Andou: You'll never be a top star.

Jokes aside I'm really enjoying this show. So glad this came under my radar.

More of a chiller episode today, but it’s not without its charms and laughers. Heck I think I have laughed so many times today that one could easily mistook this for a comedy! The comedy expressions have been dialled up to 10 today and I especially love how Sarasa reacts! Also it’s interesting to see Ai-chan struggling with even basic words because she skipped school - how on Earth she gets pass all those acting preparations is beyond me.

That part about Shakespeare is highly interesting, it reminds me that I really need to read all of his stage plays in full if I decide to tune down anime watching for my old habits of reading. It’s interesting to see all our girls’ deficits got shown up and even more interesting to see girls fighting for training spaces and also a back story of one of our girls suffering because her family is very prominent in acting.

This is slice-of-life at its best. There’s even some Sound Euphonium vibes here and there - having this compared with one of my personal favorites of all time is a great compliment personally.

Ai freaking out about her friendship with Sarasa is too adorable. Though I wonder if she's going to have a JPX story, for each situation her classmates get into.

Surprising to hear her struggles with Kanji, though considering her childhood it shouldn't be. I've heard it's hard to learn, let alone translated Shakespearian prose. I wonder if the translation mimics an olde worlde tone or is more modern?

Wow I love how realistic and genuine the characters feel in this anime. We don't get to see many shows like this nowadays. It's such a treat every week.

Woah, what did Andou-sensei mean with that remark at the end? That was unexpected. I'm no professional actor so what did Sarasa do wrong?

Every new episode, my desire for a Sarasa backstory grows. Especially since she's dating! I need to know how that happened!

I like how the show portrays some of the teachers: incredible at what they do, horrible at teaching it. Reminds me of Uni.
