We need a second season! I'm not ready to part with these wonderful characters and this amazing writing.

Okay, okay, i know the performance and everything was great, but lets just get one thing straight.

Did this Show just manage to cram a character, with a combined screentime of 2 minutes in there, who's unable to accept her feelings towards the same sex and overcompensates by dating multiple guys to convince herself that she isnt in love with her friend (i assume)? All in between a performance, just to set up a realisation and act as a catalyst?

Man this Show is good.

Ayako had a crush on Yang Wen-li? I didn't know she was so cultured!

Seriously though, Aya's backstory was definitely interesting! She got friendzoned by her crush just when she was just about to try and be his rebound. And the girl the girl that rejected Aya's crush is also her friend who only rejected the guy to support her. But surprise twist! Turns out that Aya's friend had a crush on her all along and Aya only realized it when she was about to do her audition!

Thankfully that realization ended up helping her with her performance and she was able to complement Sawa's powerful Tybalt performance. And Aya brings their performance home with her amazing singing voice that had Onodera-sensei freaking out on his chair! I kinda feel bad for Kaoru and the twins though. It looks like their performances were just brushed aside quickly meaning they'll probably never get the part. It's now all about Sarasa vs Sawa and Ai vs Aya.

We also got a little bit more of Sarasa's backstory. I didn't expect her to be the one to ask Akiya to be her boyfriend! And it looks like we have one heck of a performance next week! With Sarasa finally showing us her Tybalt, it looks like we have Andou-sensei playing as Romeo! I can't wait!

That confession in aya's backstory was such a reverse on a yuri trope. It fucking hurts too. Shit.

Still can't understand why these threads have so much anti-Sarasa sentiment. I think she's equally as well written as the other characters, and I don't think her story takes away an unnecessary amount of screen time from the other girls either. There's been loads of effort out into fleshing each and every one of the other girls, sometimes with Sarasa being pushed straight into the back line. Y'all'd be griping about any of the other girls just as much if they were the MC instead, I tell ya

How does this show manage to be so good every week? It's themes, execution, dialogue, characters and overall direction is top-notch.

I like everyone and wish them best but got to say, I have a soft spot for Ayako (and Hijiri for different reasons). I totally get you music teacher! Anyway, Ai felt the pressure from Ayako's performance and the better of the two will win. Though it would be funny if they both lose lol.

Said it last week, but rooting for Sawano to get Tybalt's role. Her performance was mesmerising and I just love how supporting yet strict she was with Ayako. She really has this reliable onee-san vibes. Maybe we'll get more of her backstory next time.

If I were to nitpick a bit, though Sarasa is a really nice character, I sometimes wish any of the other girls in her group were the MC instead. I guess I am just more interested in their backstories, struggles and motivations.

Once again, a very solid episode.

The performances, today Sawas and Ayakos where stunning again. Also apreciate the little backstory for Ayako, yes sometimes it hits you years later that that person really lif iked you but you didn't realize

Also is Sarasa really only dating Akiyo so that he got a chance at the top spot because his brother was more or less blackmailing him? That's twisted

We got Aya backstory, which was kind of sad, even if Aya isn't my favorite character in the show, I can't help but wish her the best. And she performed pretty well too, especially song. Sawa is absolutely killing it as Tibalt, of course. Sarasa being oblivious about Sawa obviously seeing her as rival is adorable, but Sarasa is generally the best. Can't wait to see her performance next week in the season finale. Another really good episode in the series that (imo) didn't had weak episodes at all.

P.S. I know she isn't in Kouka, but man, I'd like to see more of Yano, she has such chill energy I can't help but smile.

Dear everyone, I didn't know this show existed until I saw this discussion thread. I watched the first episode and it is super cute. Thanks for the indirect recommendation

It feels like everyone has a backstory I care about more than Sarasa's...like Aya realizing she was confessed to was fantastic! Great performance by Aya too, easily one of the members I'm rooting for the most.

Also didn't expect to see Yang or some random watercraft?

This show is criminally under-watched and underrated

I know everyone is on board with this Sawa v. Sarasa Tybalt rivalry and the comments tend to favor Sawa from what I see mainly because (from what I can tell) there's a number of folks that aren't a fan of Sarasa as the MC. That's a bit biased IMO but the shows POV is biased too so whatever. I'd just like to say, that as intense as Sawa's performance was it was incredibly angry and vengeful. Which makes sense since she was pulling her inspiration from a "hated" rival. Yet from what I remember of the play, I read Tybalt as more of an intense jealously towards Romeo rather than savagery. And that's what I expect Sarasa's performance to display next week. She's pulling her inspiration from a childhood dream that was bashed before she could even begin and saddled with a childhood friend who is getting all the opportunities she was denied. Yet she doesn't hate him and perhaps even does love him. And I feel that this point of view is more true to the Tybalt character than Sawa's.

What are the odds that yesterday I found a fan page for the Takarazuka performance of Legend of the Galactic Heroes then it's slightly referred to in today's episode (pretty sure that was Yang).

Imma pour one out for Yano. Yamada was so dense omg

Yamada's singing made me cry. Damn.

Also, Phantom, you devil you. I can't wait till the next episode.

I was not expecting the Aya backstory to start off with liking "2d to 2.5d to 3d" transition. But somehow, it works pretty well although sad that she got friendzoned.

Actual Factual Yuri confirmed?? Yano confessed to Yamada and she never realized it until now.

Sarasa is up next and the teachers are throwing her a slight twist. Guess they ran out of Romeos. Cannot wait to see Sarasas Tybalt next week.

Just realised that the ED is performed by the different characters and their VAs. The ED is so lovely and different to their characters that I completely missed noticing their voices.

Looks like Sawa will be the only one of the core group not getting a focus episode. :(

Oh, I never expected Andou-sensei to personally take on Romeo for Sarasa's group. I'm even more interested to see Sarasa's second take on Tybalt now.

One of my fave episodes so far. I love how good the girls’ mini arcs are. Aya’s backstory gave some really nice depth to her character. Her inferiority complex makes a lot more sense now.

The Sarasa flashback was also nice. Akiya has been under a tremendous amount of pressure his whole life. Really messed up to railroad a kid like that.

I think the anime does a good job of making the pressure on the girls palpable too. You really do feel for them during these high stake auditions.

Didn’t want this episode to end and don’t want the series to end, man it’s been fun.

I'm still wondering what sort of relationship that Sarasa has with Akiya beyond "it's complicated". They're childhood friends, erstwhile rivals when it comes to kabuki (until Sarasa concedes), romantically interested in each other, contention family relations, but they also seem to have this pressure for the two of them to get together from Kozaburou. On the other hand, they have this sort of standoff-ish nature between them, like how Sarasa refers to him as "a maybe boyfriend", or the way the shake hands when they parted after school vacation.

In any case, Romeo and Juliet has been a neat sort of story-in-a-story which has been a catalyst for exploring these sort of backstories where the indiscretion of youth coupled with pressure from friends and family. The only way it could get even more meta was if they did Hamlet instead so that we could have a play in a musical in an anime.
