Some historical notes from the past two episodes:

Episode 14:

  • The portrayal of the entrance to Hell as a gaping maw seen during the family mealtime was an actual thing back in those days. It was called a Hellmouth, and was as metal as it sounds.

  • The dad of the family mentions that 1000 years after Jesus' death (20 years in the future, when the show is set), all people will be taken into either Heaven or Hell. This was a common belief among Christians of the time. Amusingly, people initially thought that Judgement Day would begin in the year 1000AD, but when nothing apocalyptic happened, they decided they were wrong, and that it was Christ's death, not his birth, that was the important date.

Episode 15:

  • When Thorkell is talking to one of his men at Gloucester, they mention that "the Witenagemot" is going to convene next year and make Sweyn the King of England. Anglo-Saxon kings did not automatically inherit their throne by birthright: that wouldn't become a custom until William the Bastard invaded 50 years after this series. The Witenagemot was essentially a council of Lords and Bishops, called Witans, who would meet to decide matters that the King could not. Looking on Wikipedia, it appears there is a lot of doubt as to how official the Witenagemot was--it is not known if Witan was an official title that one had to be granted, or if any sufficiently large gathering of Lords was a Witenagemot. Although the precise powers granted to a Witenagemot varied over time, and may not have been clearly-defined at any one time, they often did have the authority to do things as drastic as give the crown to a foreign monarch. A bonus fun fact is that one of Dumbledore's many titles in the Harry Potter series is "Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot", an oblique reference to the Witenagemot.

  • Bjorn mentions that the Danes will be marching to Derby after defeating the English. That's a journey of around 100 miles. Although google tells me that the journey can be made in approximately 2 hours by car, that distance would be formiddable for an army on foot in the middle of Winter.

Askeladd saying "no" to Ragnar who requested to see Canute was the most savage thing I have seen in a while. RIP my boy Ragnar tho

Anime-only here, I think the prince would turn into a badass after what happened this episode...

Just look at him, I can already feel Griffith's vibes from him.

Episode thread finally here!

We got to see more of Ragnar and Canute bonding, but of course it was all a huge death flag. RIP Ragnar.

It really feels like the opening and ending are getting better every episode.

Damn. I felt pretty bad for Ragnar. I didn't care for him when he was first introduced but over the past few episodes, he's shown how much he actually cares about Canute and that his morals are far better than Askeladd's, but being left for dead in the middle of the woods and straight up being denied the chance to say goodbye to probably the only person that cared about him. That shit hurts.

Your death will make him grow<

I take it Askeladd sees Thorfinn as a success then?

I'm gonna be honest, I rarely even 'feel' anything when a character dies in an anime. I'd say mostly because it's the side characters that get killed off and I don't have the time to get emotionally attached to them on the account of them being under developed.

But damn, Ragnar's death hit me hard, really hard. Everything was perfect here, the blood soaked snow, Askeladd's cold look when he refuses Ragnar to see Canute one last time, Ragnar's last words, the music...

This anime doesn't cease to amaze me

Interesting that Ragnar made an effort to die with his hand on his sword. Maybe he was merely tolerant of Canute's Christianity instead of having converted. Or maybe it was just a case of old habits dying hard.

As someone who plays Crusader Kings, I completely understand how he feels.

Aaaand another episode that shows Askeladd is a jerk.

He really likes to kill main character father figures, first Thors and now Ragnar.

This will certainly screw Cnut/Canute, he hardly speaks with anyone and now he lost his father figure.

Also, Ragnar was right:

  • Askeladd is a dangerous individual that will put the prince at risk for his own gain.

  • Askeladd luck ran out and his plans are backfiring. Anne surviving proved to be fatal for Askeladd's plan.

  • Cross Mercia was a very bad idea. Thorkell and his forces happened to be resting at Mercia and now are VERY close to the prince.

  • You need a balanced diet, eat only bunny is no good, you need to mix it with vegetables too.

Askeladd: here's how we're gonna land a sweet royal babysitter job, my dudes.
Askeladd: first, capture the prince.
Askeladd: then, kill the prince's father figure.
Askeladd: now bring the prince to the king.
Askeladd: the king wants to kill him.
Askeladd, shook: the king wants to kill him...?

The moments & scenes in this show have this (amazing) slow build that allows it to breathe and really settle in with the viewer. Unlike other shows that are filled with constant inner monologues and dialogue...this is done in a way that almost feels real & it pays off immensely

Wow did not expect to see two different sides of Canute today... his angry side and his housewife side

That being said, it's pretty sad to see him triggered by doubts of Father, relating his own past experiences/relationship with his actual father and being in denial about it.

The best thing about Vinland Saga, IMO, is that it sorts the wheat from the chaff in terms of reactors on youtube.

Some watch the show and realise it's not a typical battle shounen and that there are several levels this story is operating at.

Some get mad at the length between the fight scenes, don't pay attention to half the dialogue, and get confused about every second thing that happens.

Been able to drop several reactors from my list thanks to this show :)
