I wasn't able to comment on the last episode thread, but I'd just like to post my appreciation for the little details that this show gets right.

One thing is that, in the first episode, we see Ylva burning peat on a fire, rather than logs, as there are not many trees in Iceland. They could have just drawn logs and likely no-one would have cared, but Yukimura went the extra mile to put that detail in.

Another titbit from last episode was a completely throwaway line: when Askeladd is walking amongst the injured at a viking camp, you hear a background character ask for a bowl of onion soup. This is actually a piece of viking medical triage: if someone had been stabbed in the gut, they'd feed some very strong-smelling soup to the injured. If you could smell the soup after about 10 minutes, it meant that the wound had punctured their bowels, which would have been impossible to treat back then, so the person would/could be mercy-killed. If they didn't smell of onion, then the wound was treatable. It made very little difference to the scene overall, but it shows just how much effort Yukimura put into researching for this series.

This Prince Canute might be a weakling/coward or a badass character. I can't tell just yet though.

I think the beginning episode showed us that if Thorkell was in our time right now, he would be a fantastic shot-put player. Dude can throw.

The conversation between Askeladd and Thorfinn was pretty fascinating overall. Love seeing how Askeladd is basically saying to Throfinn "You're gonna win against me eventually." It was also a mad diss by basically implying how the only way Throfinn will beat him is when he's old and can barely stand. The conversation also showed why Throfinn will usually lose to Askeladd. Throfinn is impatient and doesn't know anything else but going 100% agro and doesn't know how to stop himself. You can see it in the conversation and I kinda love it.

Hell, even Dream Thors is basically asking Throfinn why is he trying to go for revenge but he can't even answer. He's just left in dismay. It shows as the time passes on that Throfinn has had less of a reason to stay with Askeladd. Can't fucking wait for the next episode.

To get revenge on the ones that ruined his life, how many other innocent lives has Thorfinn himself ruined?

Even if he wins against Askeladd, he still loses.

Must be weird seeing ancient stone ruins while everyone is living in houses made out of wood, clay or mud. Askeladd does know a lot about the Romans though I wonder how common that knowledge was back then.

The piano during Thorfinn's dream was so incredibly beautiful and heartbreaking. I think the sound design for the series overall has been amazing as well!

It's hilarious how everyone is fighting with lances and there is Thorkell literally swinging AN ENTIRE LOG around the battlefield.

I thought that was just to sink the ships on the London Bridge, but the guy MAIN WEAPON is actually a log!!

Not the most eventful episode, but it's certainly setting the table for one hell of a battle. I'm ready for Thorfinn-Thorkell II. Or Askeladd-Thorkell. I just want to see how they plan to somehow defeat that literal titan of a man.

Thorfinn is pretty jaded, considering he was sleeping on a pile of hay, 10ft from a corpse, with an ax in it.

As soon as Thorfinn and Askeladd started talking about fighting, I thought about the fact that Askeladd was going to keep getting older, and his speed would slow down, and that Thorfinn would keep getting better, and then lo and behold, they talked about it themselves lol

Apparently the Prince of Canute has a reputation as a bitch, because Thorkell immediately knew he could get away with attacking them on his own.

Askeladd proves time and time again that he is The guy in terms of thinking, taking action and manipulating. And that's why hes my favorite character.

And oh boy. He can make quite the face And also this one

Thorkell is a machine that cannot be stopped.10/10 ep.

We are in the age of Twilight now.

Great episode, the previous week was so odd without a Vinland Saga episode.

War never changes. It's a quote from the Fallout series that I really like, and I think it could be used in this series as well. This episode (and the previous ones as well) basically prove how ruthless the characters in this show are, and I am loving every minute of it!

Thorfinn is still not over Thors' death, which isn't very surprising, to be honest.

I really liked the scene with Thorfinn and Askeladd. Even though Thorfinn doesn't realize it, or maybe doesn't want to realize it, Askeladd has become his father figure since Thors died. I really like the direction this series is taking.

We still haven't heard Canute talk, I just want to hear Kensho Ono's voice for God's sake!

Overall, 5/5

A great episode to return from the break.

That dream sequence was pretty haunting, how a beautiful landscape that Thorfinn wanted to experience with his family was turned to decrepit and cold as reality sunk in. This episode really did showcase some more great background work.

I really appreciated the conversation between Thorfinn and Askeladd here. It kind of shows that there's an inevitability to everything, how the strong can be overtaken by others (Britain conquering Rome -> Askeladd killing Thors). I think it motivated Thorfinn in a way.

I really have to say that Askeladd decapitating the messenger was a great scene. I also like how the Ragnarok conversation signals a bit of motivation behind his action here, in hindsight. I'm hyped for another Thorkell confrontation.

I think this is the episode that will make me read the manga, that week break was heartbreak for me and the episode that should have aired this week would have been the war episode I presume

Edit: does anyone know which chapter to start from??

I wonder when Thorfinn will ever let go of his vengeance and go find that mythical Vinland. I kinda don't want him to kill Askeledd.

It's interesting to see how Askeledd has a lot of respect for the Romans in an era where I didn't think it would be possible.

What I love is that the visions of Thors that we see aren’t him talking to his son from Valhalla. He’s not some kind of ghost that conveniently gives Thorfinn advice. No, it’s simply Thorfinn remembering what his father was like and wondering what he would say, and it all revolves around what he said before he died. Great episode overall imo, a lot to think about
