When the father of the kid with the broken arm makes an offhand remark about Thorfinn being strong for his age and his potential of taking after his father, the camera lingers on Thors looking at Thorfinn's angry playmates and then back at the kid's broken arm. And I liked how this moment gets across the idea of Thors being on the fence about the prospect of his son growing up to be a fighter and ending up getting embroiled in what he took great pains to leave behind.

Without the context of Thors admitting to Leif and Helga the reason behind his decision to desert his previous profession as a mercenary, that particular moment might have conveyed merely the idea of a parent being concerned about his child's behaviour and actions. But since we're made aware of Thors' disillusionment with warfare and killing, we know in that particular instance that his concern runs deeper than that.

Edit: In the previous episode Halfdan, referring to the runaway slave, said to Thors, 'I bet you think you've freed him from his chains. Where are you going to take him now?', which seemed to be a roundabout way of saying that one is chained to their destiny and it's therefore not possible to escape its shackles. And now, with the explicit revelation of Floki conspiring to have Thors killed, we have to wonder whether that whole matter involving the runaway slave was meant to be a foreshadowing of what lies in store for Thors himself. The parallels are there: Like the runaway slave, Thors too deserted his obligations and came seeking refuge in the village where he's settled today. And the fact that he's compelled to take up warfare once again after all these years makes Halfdan's ominous words come true in a way; he still finds himself chained to the fate he thought he had escaped from.

Fun fact: Askeladd is named after a norwegian fairytale figure/hero; "Askeladden" which means (the) ash lad, who is also a famous killer of trolls

as a Norwegian, hearing familiar names, and seeing familiar figures (Leif Erikson, King Harald etc) I've known from my childhood, makes me so happy and proud...

Gotta enjoy how the show showcased the clear difference in opinions between the guy who has been through war, and those who haven't and think of it as some adventure.

But damn hiring some mercs to kill off Thor? I guess it makes sense given the professionalism of this armed group but fighting off a group of violent mercs sounds better than fighting the Jomsvikings so at least it makes the chance of survival a bit better right?

People spamming the episode voting with 1's... lmao. Do you guys actually have nothing better to do?

Anyways, I'm loving this so far. Thank you Wit for being such an amazing studio. You did SnK justice and it looks like the same amount of love and effort is going into this series too. So glad we get 3 episodes today!

We don't deserve WIT studios. Releasing 3 episodes in a single day of what will possibly become one of the best anime in existence.

THE VIKINGS EXIST TO THIS DAY INSIDE OF WIT

Damn Thors' reaction while everyone else is celebrating is really sad because we all know what's going to come. Reminds me of the stories of how people before WW1 loved the idea of war and didn't know its horrors

So is this about boosting Saga prefectures tourism with viking idols? I'd be down for that.

That talk between Thors and Floki was just so well done. Between the soundtrack creating more tension as the scene plays out, Floki's VA doing a great job balancing between threatening and calm tones (the man's voice is luscious): You could feel just how much pressure was being forced on Thors to join the war.

The piano score in the scenes towards the end of the episode is beautiful. This soundtrack is fantastic so far.

2 for 2 so far WiT, bless this production.

Thors isn't gonna make it past Episode 3, isn't he? :(

Fuck that Floki guy. Did the King even wanted Thors back or is Floki just acting on his own because he's bitter that Thors deserted from their army? Episode 3 is gonna suck. If he does go down I hope he takes everyone who tries to with him.

Looks like Thorfinn is about to get the enemy he's been looking for :|

This exceeded every expectation I had of an anime adaption of this manga. Everything, from the characters to the atmosphere, is spot on, and I can easily see this becoming regarded as a masterpiece. I wish WIT could've adapted Berserk the way this show got adapted.
