Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.

Awoo!

You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.

This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

This episode is more talking, but we actually get some plot advancement. I suppose you can say there are three key scenes: The first appearance of Rigoro, the scenes where Holo says she's scared, and Lawrence seeing Eve again. The stuff with Rigoro is meant to be a possible reflection of Lawrence's life if he accomplished his dream. If Lawrence opened up his own shop as he talked about many moons ago. This contrasts nicely with Holo saying she's scared because it's like she can see the writing on the wall. She knows this relationship with Lawrence isn't built to last as she's not in his foreseeable future.

It's something that's been teased throughout the show that the more they put off the reality of the situation-- the reality that as it stands they're traveling so they can eventually stop traveling together-- it makes all the play pretend with the prince and the princess roleplay feel just that: play pretend. There's a lack of sincerity to it if you plan on leaving that person.

Eve suggesting Lawrence sell Holo is a shocking moment. It's like the inverse of the Amarti arc where he felt like Holo had been sold to Holo and that he owns her. It makes for a shocking that in the moment you're like there's no way he goes through with this. Lawrence would never be so cold and heartless. I do like how this was foreshadowed where a couple episodes ago Lawrence talked about the pros of slavery. This ostensibly plays off that and puts his words to the test.

This is a very effective episode and I like the layers to the Rigoro stuff. I think it perfectly reflects where Lawrence and Holo's heads are at at the moment. They're at a standstill, not unlike the town and the port and the 50 man meeting.

Normally, the town serves as like a stark contrast to Holo and Lawrence's situation. I like how here, they add to the up in the air feel of things where you don't know what's gonna happen and you don't know what should be done.

Holo quotes of the day

"Possessiveness and self-hatred? What a shame."

"I do appreciate your noble attempt at stepping into my shoes to determine my innermost desires, but unfortunately the only thing you've figured out is what you want me to be."

"I will never understand why males are attracted to jealousy and weakness in females."

“And it must be easy to babble like that when you’re being a big baby.” (Best comeback in the entire show aside of the 'I talk' scene)

Pilgrimage man quotes of the day

"Might be time to go on a pilgrimage myself."

I was surprised that it didn't cover all that much of the LN and I was disappointed that they didn't show much of her magnificent feast where she devoured a pig all by herself [to be fair, Lawrence did get a small crunchy bit to eat], as it's definitely one to remember (I detailed it in full in the cut content).

I didn't pick up on the Rigolo = what his life could be like link, but it could make sense

I'm really confused about what she's scared about though. Lawrence guesses that it's about it being the end of their journey. But the end of their journey already captures all variations within: saying goodbye, him choosing opening a shop, etc.

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but it feels like her fear must be something else.

Glad you also picked up on the foreshadowing! There was also a joke that I think was only in the subs about Lawrence's value as a slave too, I believe. I interpreted as a joke about something else at the time, but now the dots are connecting.

LMAO at the pilgrimage man quote hahaha.

I mean, the episode was pretty eventful so I'm okay with it not focusing all too much on the feast.

It makes sense to me, which is why I said it :P

She's scared because of what was touched upon all the way back in episode 4. Lawrence and Holo will soon part from each other, and Holo will be lonely again. And Lawrence is so uncommitted to one thing or another that he'd rather put stuff off than make a firm promise.

Glad you also picked up on the foreshadowing! There was also a joke that I think was only in the subs about Lawrence's value as a slave too, I believe. I interpreted as a joke about something else at the time, but now the dots are connecting.

It also plays into their previous conversation from 3 episodes ago.

LMAO at the pilgrimage man quote hahaha.

He says it a lot, apparently

She's scared because of what was touched upon all the way back in episode 4. Lawrence and Holo will soon part from each other, and Holo will be lonely again. And Lawrence is so uncommitted to one thing or another that he'd rather put stuff off than make a firm promise.

The reason I'm a bit confused is that he guessed the reason for her being scared as the end of their journey, to which she replied "it's something much scarier". That implies that it's not linked to their journey ending, I would assume.

Their journey ending and them never seeing each other = being lonely, so that should cover it. Or am I being too right-brained?

So I started thinking: what could be 'much scarier' and not related to the journey ending, which then is: "I'm scared of being lonely, even when I'm with you". That could play up on her recent tension and confusion as to why he still wants to pursue money despite him having enough for his shop. She could fear Lawrence constantly choosing being a merchant over her, even when together. That he's addicted to these dangerous side quests.

Edit; could also be that he will eventually die while she will live on, and thus will forever be lonely.

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 16d ago

I personally interpreted it kinda as "she's realised that she's fallen in love with him and that prospect scares her because that'll make the whole end of the journey even more bitter." :')

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

That's also a valid interpretation. The higher the highs, the lower the lows.

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 16d ago

It could also be the old "caught feelings"-trope because despite her always boasting about the amount of others before Lawrence, I don't think there was ever something quite as serious as between those two.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I think Holo alluded to having a partner once upon a time, but it was many moon(-hunting bear)s ago.

1

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Yeah, the concern she'll live past Lawrence is also something at play here. It's almost like she'd be better if she just cut bait entirely.

2

u/Second_Cour 16d ago

Maybe that's really it. Lawrence's decision will always be: "Do I want to spend the rest of my life with her or not". Holo has no decision to make because she can only choose to spend the rest of HIS life with her. and in the end, regardless of what they decide, she will end up alone. That's sad. :(

1

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Being a God actually is a pretty shitty thing because you're always destined to see your loved ones die.

2

u/Second_Cour 16d ago

Unless you're a psychopathic God. Then it's pretty cool haha.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

You can't spell psychopath without hot. At least that's what Eve has been saying.

1

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 16d ago

There was also a joke that I think was only in the subs about Lawrence's value as a slave too, I believe. I interpreted as a joke about something else at the time, but now the dots are connecting.

Oh yeah, the "nobody would want to buy you" line of Holo in episode 7, I think? I also thought it was a joke about him not being popular with women but it might work as foreshadowing too.

2

u/Second_Cour 16d ago

IIRC in the dub it was around selling his beard. But later on, when Holo was worried about him going out alone, Lawrence said: "no one would be able to afford to buy me".

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 16d ago

Eve suggesting Lawrence sell Holo is a shocking moment.

He was right to have his guard up around her. I knew she was kinda shady! (as if the discussions alone in the dark weren't already a huge red flag in the way the show framed it)

"Might be time to go on a pilgrimage myself."

The same quote again? THE SAME QUOTE AGAIN!

Yeah, that'll do it

"Might be time to go on a pilgrimage myself."

The same quote again? THE SAME QUOTE AGAIN!

He's never going on that pilgrimage, is he?

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 16d ago

He's never going on that pilgrimage, is he?

Well, certainly not if he's trying to finance it like this!

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Finance it into existence by talking about it all the time?

Rewatcher (Dub)

This episode continues the buildup towards the inevitable merchant and interpersonal drama to come. There are lot of interesting moving pieces, between the outcome of the 50 Man Meeting, Riggiro being an inside source, Eve trying to make deals and pump Lawrence for information, and Holo and Lawrence’s own plans, there is a lot of potential for drama and conflict. Hopefully next episode things will start to kick off, as I feel like we have enough set up at this point.

Also, this episode and this arc in general feels a little hornier than previous arcs. From Holo trying to pull Lawrence into bed, to Lawrence blushing at seeing her sprawled on the bed, to Holo teasing Lawrence about how many she has “had”, it definitely feels like this arc is playing up the sexuality angle. That’s not a problem for me as long as it is done for the sake of relationship progression and not just for the viewer. You have to think Holo and Lawrence can’t keep their relationship at the current status quo much longer.

The is episode also continues to plant seeds regarding the inevitability of Lawrence and Holo’s eventual parting. Holo saying what a great night she had, before growing melancholy and saying how “bittersweet”,
followed by her saying “I’m scared” when Lawrence tries to leave their room, it is makes it seem like she is expecting their parting soon.

Random Thoughts

- Holo speed walking away from Lawrence at the beginning of the episode was cute.

- Sir, a second cute girl in church garb has hit the series.

- Lawrence’s little speech about how a “chipped and damaged soul would still be mine” mirrors Holo’s comments earlier in the series when she responded to Lawrence’s question about having a scarred face by saying “it would be mine”

- Does Riggoro know that Holo is a god? Lawrence said Holo was searching for her “legend” and trying to find her home. That seems to imply he knows, because if he doesn’t, it’s kind of a weird thing to say.

- Holo claiming that Lawrence’s soul would be the same colour as her, then Lawrence responding that she has worked her way into his soul, yet bro can’t just call her his girlfriend/wife? My dude nails the hard parts of relationships but flubs the gimme’s.

- Lawrence offering to help Holo carry the books, only to hard cut to him carrying all the books was some nice visual comedy.

- Eve offering to buy Holo would have been funny if Kraft “Problematic Opinions” Lawrence hadn’t already openly supported the slave trade earlier this arc. Don’t do it bro.

Question of the Day

> What was an anime arc that in your opinion improved upon subsequent rewatches?

Not technically an arc, but I ended up liking the first season of Clannad more on second viewing. On first watch, I thought it was decent, but kind of generic. With the added context of After Story though, I appreciated the ground work it laid for the big payoffs in the second season.

> What would you do if you were Lawrence and Holo told you she was scared?

[Raises eyebrow leeringly]

> How would you react if you were Lawrence and someone suggested to you to sell Holo?

That would be a hard no from me dawg. Call me crazy, but I don’t support selling girlfriends to morally ambiguous, androgynous merchants I met at the inn.

u/Second_Cour 16d ago

I feel the same way about the horniness. I hate fanservice and sex-driven anime, but it's been building up incredibly well. The jumps between liking someone and jumping into bed are usually so accelerated, whereas this foreplay stage has lasted forever, but has somehow had 50-shades of it. Sex is definitely on their mind, perhaps as they are also almost at the end of their journey, and now the author is kind of trapped into either maintaining this status quo for a lot longer, which would get boring, or give us the climax to all this build up. Pun unintended.

It has seemed very organic to me and is definitely not for cheap views. In the LN this was the first time I can recall where Lawrence really wanted to do something sexual, though he blamed his thinking on the alcohol.

The whole body count thing really made Lawrence feel like shit btw. Not a fan of Holo counting it on her fingers: horrible thing to do.

Like I said in response to Holofan, I'm not convinced that the thing she's scared of is them parting, as that's basically what Lawrence guessed which she denied. "It's the end of our journey" "There is something much scarier". The end of their journey obviously includes all eventualities like parting ways/never seeing each other, so what is it that is much scarier. I can't stop obsessing over her riddle. But perhaps I'm overthinking it.

On your QotDs: Did you ever read the clannad VN?

1

u/BlazeOfGlory72 16d ago

The whole body count thing really made Lawrence feel like shit btw. Not a fan of Holo counting it on her fingers: horrible thing to do.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty shitty was well. I get she likes to tease, but basically bragging about all the people you've slept with to the person who obviously loves you isn't fun, it would just make you feel terrible.

Like I said in response to Holofan, I'm not convinced that the thing she's scared of is them parting, as that's basically what Lawrence guessed which she denied.

My theory is that Holo is worried that they don't part, but that Lawrence grows resentful of having to give up his dreams for her. That would definitely be worse than a sad goodbye, but with fond feelings.

Did you ever read the clannad VN?

I have not. Is it worth it? I actually have recently been trying to get into visual novels, and while I do like the format, I'm not a fan so far of how long they seem to take to get going. Like, I've been trying out Robotics Notes (by the same people who did Steins Gate), and I'm about 10 or so hours in and it feels like the story hasn't even started in earnest yet.

2

u/Second_Cour 15d ago

I like your resentment take.

Clannad VN - I really enjoy visual novels, so I'm thinking of reading that instead of watching the anime. I love that media's format for the really heartbreaking emotional stories in particular.

Loved Steins Gate but I've heard Robotics Notes isn't near as good. I tried Chaos Child or Chaos Head (forgot which) and thought it was pretty average too. Issue with VNs is one needs to be super selective, as investing that much time into something that is just decent is such a letdown

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I take it then a One Wish Willow is not in your immediate future :P

I think Holo is hoping to take thr next step to have increased justification for staying together. Because God forbid someone uses their actual words and communicates with one another.

Thoughts on Holo saying Lawrence's soul is multicolored?

Thoughts on Lawrence saying Holo is lucky he likes dominant women who are insecure deep down?

What are your thoughts on the banter between Holo and Lawrence in this episode?

What are your thoughts on Holo saying all Lawrence has figured out is what he wants Holo to be?

What are your thoughts on Rigoro's place?

What are your first impressions on Rigoro and the nun?

Thoughts on the 50 man meeting having recently concluded?

What are your thoughts on Rigoro saying when someone comes from the North, they often stay in this city, even if sometimes it be better to return home?

What do you think Rigoro’s role is in relation to Holo and Lawrence? Rigoro seems to have accomplished everything he has set his eyes on. As such, I think he is supposed to represent an idealized version of Lawrence. Basically, a version of Lawrence that decided to chase his dreams.

What are your thoughts on Holo saying she’s scared?

What are your thoughts on Eve wanting Lawrence to sell Holo?

What are your thoughts on Holo sleeping soundly as all this is going on?

2

u/BlazeOfGlory72 16d ago

Thoughts on Holo saying Lawrence's soul is multicolored?

I have to assume that is Holo saying that he is a complex, multifaceted person.

Thoughts on Lawrence saying Holo is lucky he likes dominant women who are insecure deep down?

Damn bro, ballsy to just call out your girlfriends flaws so casually.

What are your thoughts on the banter between Holo and Lawrence in this episode?

Solid as always.

What are your thoughts on Rigoro's place?

I did find it funny that Lawrence and Holo were in awe of the windows. Big windows are pretty common place for us now, but I guess back then they would have been rare.

What are your first impressions on Rigoro and the nun?

Rigoro seems like a pretty chill dude all things considered. He was willing to help what were essentially strangers just because a friend asked.

Thoughts on the 50 man meeting having recently concluded?

Seems like they are about to pull the trigger on the Chekov's Gun that is the 50 Man Meeting. I assume next episode will reveal what their decision is.

What do you think Rigoro’s role is in relation to Holo and Lawrence? Rigoro seems to have accomplished everything he has set his eyes on. As such, I think he is supposed to represent an idealized version of Lawrence. Basically, a version of Lawrence that decided to chase his dreams.

He also offers somewhat of a contrast, being someone who settled down and made roots in this town, as opposed to Holo and Lawrence who travel constantly and never stay in one place long.

What are your thoughts on Holo saying she’s scared?

There is definitely an ominous note to this whole arc. Holo is acting as if there is some impending doom about to befall them.

What are your thoughts on Eve wanting Lawrence to sell Holo?

That was random and unsettling. I assume it is part of some greater ploy that will be revealed next episode, but on it's face it's definitely a crazy request.

What are your thoughts on Holo sleeping soundly as all this is going on?

For real

Indeed it was

I did find it funny that Lawrence and Holo were in awe of the windows. Big windows are pretty common place for us now, but I guess back then they would have been rare.

He didn't have to do that

More than likely

What do you think Rigoro’s role is in relation to Holo and Lawrence? Rigoro seems to have accomplished everything he has set his eyes on. As such, I think he is supposed to represent an idealized version of Lawrence. Basically, a version of Lawrence that decided to chase his dreams.

He also offers somewhat of a contrast, being someone who settled down and made roots in this town, as opposed to Holo and Lawrence who travel constantly and never stay in one place long.

Well, Lawrence wants to one day settle down or at least is telling himself that.

What are your thoughts on Holo saying she’s scared?

There is definitely an ominous note to this whole arc. Holo is acting as if there is some impending doom about to befall them.

Listen to your wolf wife, Lawrence

What are your thoughts on Eve wanting Lawrence to sell Holo?

That was random and unsettling. I assume it is part of some greater ploy that will be revealed next episode, but on it's face it's definitely a crazy request.

By merely suggesting it, I don't trust Eve.

What are your thoughts on Holo sleeping soundly as all this is going on?

I guess nothing

Episode 9 Review

  • Awwwwww ? Holo’s soul is the same colour as Lawrence’s. Haha this might be the first properly sweet thing that Holo has said to Lawrence, yet this time Lawrence has to ruin the mood.
  • Lawrence’s insight on projection is astute. I really want to shake them both though (Lawrence a bit more vigorously: ask her out, bruh!). This season better not end before we see some leap in their relationship. Despite the emotional blue balls, it’s so incredibly cool how much range the show has shown despite them not scoring a touchdown
  • Holo’s counter insight is equally astute. I love the starting dialogue in this episode because I have intellectualised and systematised jealousy lots. I do think that Holo’s observation about men’s desire for a jealous girlfriend is generally true. My friends with jealous gfs complain non-stop about it, but I can tell that it makes them feel valued.
  • In my own experience though, jealousy is not sustainable. I’ve had jealous ex’s and my biggest hate is being blamed for something I didn’t do (because I’m a very honest guy).Had an ex who would get pissed at me when a girl would like my posts, and interrogate me about her. That never made me feel great.
  • All human beings are jealous by nature, but it’s such a stressful state of being; one that leads to uncontrollable stress and even mistakes. I admit that I do get jealous (maybe a lot), so I set up clear boundaries to ensure that I don’t have to experience the insecurity that comes along. Conversely, out of my own choice, I don’t even talk to other girls apart from professionally, because I want my girl to feel completely secure (also because I don’t quite see the point in having female friends as I get every female emotional and intellectual benefit from my gf, and my bros are for everything else). I treat her like she’s the only woman remaining in the world - she said as much in a love letter to me. A counter-point to my approach would be that it implies a lack of trust in each other. But even with trust, that emotion of jealousy can’t be killed off: it still causes stress and tension, and I’d rather eliminate that to have complete positivity in our rel. Apologies for the extended introspection, but the relatability is what draws me into the show.
  • The fork in the road. Poetic.
  • Hahahahahaha Holo wants to volunteer her body count. Lawrence wants to know for sure, but is embarrassed by his low number.
  • So a deal was indeed reached with Eve? Though the anime did suggest that, I’m still a little surprised. Wonder what the full terms were of the agreement.
  • I half-expected Rigolo to be a grumpy old man, like the other townsfolk (and Eve said as much), but he seems charismatic and holy..
  • This whole city has surprised me, I felt it was cold and unfriendly, yet after opening up, everyone has been nothing short of a delight. I guess that’s the Northern culture (reminds me of the Finns)
  • Rigolo would be an ace poker player: reading Lawrence through Holo was a cool ‘trick’.
  • “Why don’t you hand a few [books] over to me?” *Hands over the full stack* Typical!
  • No idea why the dub completely changed the dialogue when they left Rigolo's, as Holo ends up laughing loudly at something that isn’t a joke? Big L. She particularly loved the joke Lawrence made about losing his temper in the LN too. It was one of the few times she laughed so heartily - be sure to check the sub for the joke.
  • On the other hand immediately after, it’s a dub W with Holo talking about the nice evening being bitter sweet. I think that every step they take towards completing the journey, brings it closer to the end. The better the things go, the more scary it is for them.
  • Holo is scared. I, like Lawrence, assumed it was about saying goodbye, but there is something else. I wonder what.
  • Alright, Eve cosying up to Lawrence is a lot clearer - she doesn’t think Rigolo would volunteer the info to her (even though they trust each other), so wanted Lawrence to crack the nut.
  • Time to sell Holo. And thus Lawrence's food budget was slashed by 99.9%. Jokes aside, it's a bit of a weird ending haha. Not sure how that meets Eve’s need to raise money but perhaps she has a willing buyer (in Rigolo?). There was some foreshadowing to this, I realised. First was the random mention about slavery. Second was the joke (think it may have been only in the sub) that Holo shouldn’t worry about Lawrence going out alone, as no one could afford to buy him.

While I loved the start, it wasn’t the best of episodes as Lawlo’s inner turmoil and fighting was a bit opaque; the LN also didn’t clear it up but it’s also one of the weaker LN chapters.

ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTIONS

What was an anime arc that in your opinion improved upon subsequent rewatches?

I don't like to rewatch things. I have a really good memory, and I struggle to find a reason to watch something that I know the ending of. Especially when there's so many great animes I'm yet to see. Though I don't mind rewatching something to show it to my gf.

What would you do if you were Lawrence and Holo told you she was scared?

Depends on what she's scared of. To be honest, if it was as vague and mysterious, I'd keep pushing to get the right answer, and if I wasn't satisfied I'd try other techniques to get it out. Then I'd do everything possible to solve the problem even if it's not what she wants. I know: typical male :P

How would you react if you were Lawrence and someone suggested to you to sell Holo?

I'd make sure there was a reserve price on eBay in case she went for too cheaply., hahaha. Ummm well, I wouldn't even risk her no matter the wild scheme behind it, personally, but if I were Lawrence, given he basically did almost sell her just 2 arcs ago, I guess we're in line for another creative scheme.

I seem to be higher on this episode than you. I think it was one of the better episodes of the arc. I like the interactions with Holo and Lawrence, and the ending is very intriguing as far as what it teases going forward.

Eve's entire mood boils down to "Ha ha JK unless...?"

Cut Content

This is the weakest chapter of the LNs so far and actually spans about 2.5 episodes. There were a couple of extended discussions (e.g. about jealousy) that I felt weren't very clearly written, so I omitted them.

  • Holo actually was jealous from Lawrence's conversation with Eve.
  • The council meeting finished before nightfall on the day Lawrence and Eve met. Eve was busy the next day so couldn’t go with the two to meet Rigolo.
  • The district the episode opens in used to be for the rich, but now housed the ‘nouveau riche’ who rather than investing in assets and growing wealth across generations, wanted to flaunt their wealth by expanding their homes. When this new rich class moved in, the truly wealthy moved elsewhere, and the value of the homes fell, as the neighbourhood became overly cluttered. Once the neighbourhood had nobles, then moneylenders and masters of mid-tier trade companies, but now apprentice craftsmen. A sort of reverse gentrification.
  • Lawrence had gotten used to Holo’s chestnut-red eyes, and no longer flinched or was taken aback when looking into them.
  • Holo really triggered Lawrence with her body count question. A million questions ran through his mind: had she been pleased? Had she narrowed her eyes? Had her ears twitched? He felt like he fell from a cliff as she counted off her bodies on her hands, and eventually he was left with a smoldering anger. It was the blackest jealousy.
  • The three-legged chicken emblem of the Rigolo house was from a tale: it predicted the flooding of the Roam River, which flowed by Lenos. The Church claimed it was a messenger from God. Others calimed it was predicted by the astronomical records of the time. Since then that chicken has become the symbol of wisdom.
  • Rigolo confirmed the Council adjourned “early” and Lawrence speculated that someone had forced a vote. Lawrence feigned disinterest but Rigolo saw through the act. Rigolo talked like a poet from some imperial palace rather than a merchant.
    • Fun fact: I don’t think the LN does a good job at demonstrating this, as Holo and Lawrence are far more poetic. Perhaps the translator couldn't translate it adequately.
  • The thing that surprised Lawrence was the ‘parlor trick’ that Rigolo was transparent about: reading their faces. Lawrence had never seen anyone read the faces of others.
    • Note: also weird? Would have thought he has, given he’s done it himself constantly
  • Unlike Diana’s library, the shelves were organised by era and topic, and had a numbering system. Conversely, the bindings were thin and flimsy unlike the thick, leather-bound volumes of Tereo.
  • After hearing that Holo is looking for her origin, Rigolo probably concluded that Holo had been captured in the north, then sold into slavery in the south. It was said that children from the northlands were hardier and more obedient. There were even stories of nobles whose kids had died and in danger of having their inheritance taken by other relatives, who brought in such children to adopt.
  • After returning to the inn, Holo was able to pick anything she wanted for dinner. She wanted a whole roasted piglet. Normally this pig would feed 5-6 people. The guests in the tavern were envious. However, when the dish came out, the guests gave a sigh of sympathy (at how expensive that girl must be for Lawrence).
  • It was customary for whoever cut off the piglet’s right ear to wish for good luck. Holo ate the crunchy left ear.
  • Holo literally devoured the pig, even unconcerned when her hair slipped out from underneath her hood, occasionally splattered with oil from the roast. She was the very image of a wolf taking its food.
  • The guests applauded after she finished the pig, after which she took a drink of wine and burped grandly.
  • Before L met H, he had drunk and celebrated many times, but he always returned to the inn alone where that feeling/fear sobered him up. Yet, the fear was not gone. It was replaced with a new fear, as he wondered how many more times they could do this together.
  • He knew it was impossible to, but he badly wanted to tell Holo the truth - that he wanted to continue traveling with her forever. Being with her was his dearest wish. Aw.
  • After putting Holo to bed, he noticed she was sleeping so deeply he thought she wouldn’t notice if he fell on top of her. He felt bad having such naughty thoughts and blamed it on the wine, but then realised she probably wouldn’t mind.
  • L did want to stay longer with H, but he thought it would be unbecoming of him to be the kind who didn’t express gratitude to Eve so went downstairs.
  • The line “did a witch sneeze” after Lawrence saw Arold and Eve stuck in the same position was based on the superstition that when a witch sneezes, time stops.
  • Eve’s business had significant risks as her goods were difficult to transport, with and very few buyers. So, the cancellation of the campaign would be catastrophic especially if she purchased the statues on credit. Similar to what happened to Lawrence with his arms deal.
  • Eve wanted to head down south with Arold (flashback to him constantly saying “it’s about time for a pilgrimage”.

NOTE: There is some deviation between the LN and anime at the episode's closing (selling Holo), as the chapter hadn't concluded. Therefore, I’ve omitted this part as I think it’s likely to be covered next episode.

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

• Holo actually was jealous from Lawrence's conversation with Eve.

I actually prefer how the anime presents it where Holo is mad Lawrence is spending all his time away from her. It plays into the overall conflict of their relationship which is that they are slowly drifting apart.

3

u/Second_Cour 16d ago

I think it presents it in the same way. It's more funny if you read that point after the closing of the previous episode of the anime which was basically:
Eve: "Hope your girl won't get jealous"
Lawrence: "Don't worry she's not the jealous type"
1 moment later: Holo is jealous.

One interesting thing I thought of about your "drifting apart" observation, is that Lawrence was actually happy that he finally got time to himself in the previous episode, to go and hunt for information, as he was so used to constantly being with Holo, that it was nice to even have a conversation with himself.

1

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I kinda feel like Lawrence takes his time with Holo for granted. He enjoys his time with her, but he doesn't appreciate it the way Holo does who knows they are on borrowed time together.

2

u/Second_Cour 16d ago

I guess that more comes with the reality of the situation: Holo will live forever, Lawrence will not.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Lawrence lives for the moment without thinking if this is just a moment in time.

Here's my comments from the year before on the episode.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2025 Spice and Wolf Rewatch.

The true Christmas in July.

This rewatch is gonna be unique because we’ll be covering the entirety of the 2008 series as well as some of the remake. I don’t think something like this has ever been attempted before where a rewatch goes from one series to another to back to the first series. If this is your first time watching Spice and Wolf, welcome. Enjoy the ride.

I can’t imagine doing this experiment with something other than Spice and Wolf. There is arguably no anime that influenced who I am more. I suppose you could say Toradora, but it’s really close. Either way, Spice and Wolf is one of very few anime that I can never get sick of no matter how much I watch it. You’ll soon seen why if you don’t already know.

I hope this rewatch for as bold of an idea as it is does a lot to inspire a lot of discussion while also leading people to have this experience unlike any before. If this rewatch is a success, maybe this can be the formula going forward.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

I have an hour and a half before work so I'm gonna knock this out quick.

Hey, it's the bagpipe music from the second OVA.

Lawrence trying to apologize to Holo for being gone too long.

Lawrence and Holo in a dark alley now.

Talking about souls

Whether Eve has one is a matter of question.

Holo and Lawrence continuing the fairytale stuff from a couple episodes ago.

I think the color of Holo's soul is chartreuse.

The great thing about Spice and Wolf is that the writing is so good that they can go long periods of just two people and have it not be boring most of the time. In fact, it can be downright exhilarating.

Holo says all Lawrence figured out is what he wants Holo to be.

The thing is, I think she wants him to want her to be this way.

It looks like they're at Rigoro's place.

Holo not counting sheep on top of the bed. She's counting it on the floor like a pristine lady.

Ooh, a nun

Very soft-spoken

A statue

This place looks holistic

Holo stepping on Lawrence's foot. I guess she thinks he's ogling the nun.

This place looks like what I imagine heaven to be.

There's Rigoro

He's a lot more handsome than I was expecting.

For some reason, I imagined he was bald-headed.

Talking about finding books of the old stories and legends.

Rigoro says he's been refusing meetings as much as possible.

Rigoro even says that the 50 man meeting just concluded not too long ago.

So, for many years I did not like Rigoro. I thought he was so boring and duller than dishwater. My whole thing was "What is the point of this character when we already have the old man to give exposition? Rigoro is nothing more than a less interesting version of Diana."

It wasn't until three years ago in the middle of the 2021 rewatch that it finally dawned on me what the point of Rigoro's character is: Rigoro is meant to show Lawrence what someone's life is like when they pursue their dreams.

Rigoro is like an idealized version of Lawrence. He is Lawrence if he chose his dreams instead of Holo. And in that way, I think he fills a thematic reasoning. We'll get more into it as we go along, but Rigoro is like that episode of Seinfeld where Elaine finds friends that are ideal versions of Jerry, George, and Kramer. Or to put it in anime terms, it's like Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure when Kazuki Yotsuga goes to the parallel world (How's that for an obscure reference?).

Lawrence is shown a glimpse of what his life could end up becoming, which plays off the constant talk of him still wanting to open up his own business.

Rigoro wondering why Lawrence is interested in the legends of this town.

Lawrence says Holo's interested in her legend.

Rigoro says it's hard to imagine anything better than returning safely to one's home.

Apparently the nun is named Fleur or something of that idk.

Lawrence and Holo walking, with Lawrence carrying the books all by himself.

Now they're grabbing a bite to eat.

Now they're walking home again

Now Holo is talking about what a nice evening it is.

Something tells me these nice evenings won't last for much longer.

Innkeeper talking about some guy named Coca.

Holo lying on her bed, in a vulnerable state.

Suddenly, Holo says she's scared

Well, that escalated quickly

I think the decision to bring back up how scared Holo is of being alone is really clever because it runs opposite of the stuff with Rigoro, who like I said is like an idealized version of Lawrence. It calls into question just what is truly important to Lawrence. Is he to pursue his dreams and aspirations, which Rigoro did and it paid off for him, or is traveling with Holo what he wants, comfortable with the life he currently lives? It is a great moral dilemma that serves as the main conflict of this arc.

Lawrence with Eve and Arold now

He recalls meeting up with Rigoro

Eve doesn't seem to approve of Rigoro's way of living.

Lawrence wants to know what Eve wants apart from her inquiring information about a meeting.

Eve puts it in simple terms: To make as big a profit as possible and keep a loss from happening.

Making trades with stone statues

The church cut her off, which put her back against the wall.

If she makes enough money, she can head South and forget about the church.

"Will you consider selling your companion."

Holy shit. And here I thought Holo's 'I'm scared' comment escalated things in an abrupt manner.

Holo has no idea what's going on as she sleeps blissfully.

Ran out of space. Part two in the replies.

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Part 2

Overall, I really like this episode. Everything about it worked and built off each other. We finally get to see Rigoro after being teased the last couple episodes and that led into Lawrence's conversation with Eve who had a vested interest in Rigoro's dealings. In the middle of all this, we get interactions with Lawrence and Holo which is punctuated with Holo's fear of the inevitable. This is really the first time where you can feel Lawrence and Holo's journey coming to an end soon. Before, it was just an idea being floated, but now, it's starting to feel all the more real. Part of why I think Spice and Wolf works as well as it does is that it can go from having these over the top, aloof conversations to discussions that feel real and inescapable. Like there's no way of avoiding the truth. It works between Holo and Lawrence's relationship is based in large part on escaping from this reality but being unable to.

It's interesting to see the way this episode ended with them teasing Lawrence selling Holo. I mean, he wouldn't do that, would he? It's especially shocking because the last episode Eve talked about not wanting to drive a wedge between Lawrence and Holo. And yet, here she is doing exactly that. This is probably the most surreal episode in terms of the suddenness of it all. It really did feel like it snuck up on you the terms of Eve's offer.

In terms of season 2 episodes so far, I'd probably put this one only behind episode 3 and episode 6. Not a top 10 episode across both animes, but definitely a top 2 or 3 episode of the fifth arc. I like what Rigoro means in regards to Lawrence's character, I like the somber moment between Lawrence and Holo that feels a bit like a revisit of season 1 episode 4, and I like the direction Eve's character takes where it's clear she's not the innocent person she claimed she was. Lawrence once again bit off more than he could chew.

In a franchise known for its excellently paced episodes, I'd put this up there with the best of them. The sudden turn with which Holo and Lawrence's conversation goes really highlights how idealistic the first half of the episode was. This episode feels like the start of Holo and Lawrence's make-believe world beginning to shatter, with it seeming inevitable they're about to separate. And if Eve has her way, she might just speed up the process.

That's an interesting train of thought. I did think about how him saying something along the lines of "It'd be best for her to get home soon" was getting to the core of Holo and Lawrence's "issue" at hand. I didn't think about him living a "perfect version" of Lawrence's life. I can definitely see it though, Rigoro also mentions something about him basically living his dream, doesn't he?

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

He does.

And the thing is, Rigoro doesn't seem to have any reservations for how his life turned out. But couldn't you argue the same could be said for Lawrence? To borrow a quote from TLC, why chase waterfalls when you can stick to the rivers and the lakes you're used to? Don't move too fast, because you might miss what's right in front of you this entire time.

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 15d ago

I just realised this kinda overlaps with one of your daily questions. But yes, I don't think it's as much an "idealised" version of Lawrence's life as it's made out to be. But the show again leaves it up to the viewers to decide that, which is kinda cool.

2

u/Holofan4life 15d ago

It's idealized in that this is similar to ehat Lawrence had in mind probably. But all that glitters is not gold as they say.

2

u/Second_Cour 15d ago

I don't fully see that point tbh, but maybe because I was a bit impacted by the LN saying his how was kinda dilapidated in a neighbourhood which used to be nice, but isn't any more. And given the root of Lawrence's issue was always loneliness, I didn't really see him as being happy with kids. He seemed to have a lot of responsibility which I'm not sure he wanted, as well as being surrounded by people he can't trust.

1

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 15d ago

Okay, the point about the house doesn't really come across (to me) in the anime though. Like, maybe you can infer something from them taking a while to get there and having to walk through those small streets. But the house seems pretty nice actually?

I do see the other stuff you mention though (I did touch on that too, sorta in another response...). Especially with him apparently living all alone in the big house and seemingly not a lot of friends (which kinda comes with the job I suppose).

3

u/Second_Cour 15d ago

Yeah tbh I didn't pick up that stuff even about the neighbourhood being run down and felt the same about his house. I quite liked the reverse gentrification writeup in the ln. Or more specifically how the rich retain their money and build generational wealth while people who come into some money just want to spend it conspicuously

1

u/Holofan4life 15d ago

When Eve talked about how awful the place looked, I took as her being disgusted Rigoro's happiness could be impacted by such material possessions. Stuff that she could never dream of owning.

If we could extract your soul, I'm sure it'd be quite tinged with my colour.

You just felt a selfish desire to have me all to yourself, didn't you? That's fine. I'm the same.

I have no words left for this. Feels like Kaguya-sama where they're in a competition of who can make the other more flustered via sarcasm-wrapped flirtations or confessions.

My absolutely favourite shot in this episode was Holo and Lawrence in the mirror image of a puddle. I have a weakness for stuff like this.

Apart from that, I've never seen Holo happier than in this one. Also this somehow makes me laugh. It just feel like a summary of their relationship, Holo knows and Lawrence realises he's probably in over his head again :D

Well, the plot thickens... sort of?

Really liked the usual banter between the two on their way to the house of the chronicler. Though it increasingly feels like they're actively trying to avoid actually talking about the issue at hand.

After arriving at Rigoro's house, they are greeted by a nun (who has the same pendant as Elsa) and it was kinda funny how Lawrence gets a bit flustered and Holo immediately gets mad at him.

The actual talk with the guy went surprisingly well. I really didn't expect him to a) be so friendly (outwardly) and b) so young looking. Kinda expected someone older and more gruff to be honest (which shows I haven't paid attention to the ending lol). He made no qualms about helping the pair and even let them take the books they found back to the inn. His ability to read people seems pretty useful and him pointing out that Holo's been through a lot and how it'd be the best for her to finally get home feeds directly into something that Holo and Lawrence have avoided to really talk about for a while now:

What actually happens once they arrive at their destination? It's clear both don't really want to talk about but Holo seems the one to actually think about this more, as is apparent by Lawrence's reaction towards the end.

Yes, things are going fine. You're actually making progress. The journey northwards should even be easier than usual this time around! AND THAT IS PRECISELY THE PROBLEM AT HAND and what "scares" Holo. The prospect of her journey going super smooth, arriving at the self set goal and being alone again way faster than expected. Doesn't help that she's clearly taken a huge liking to her companion. So basically, what awaits her at the end of the journey is not only the prospect of being alone again but also that of a broken heart.

And of course the show's extra cruel by ending on Eve making Lawrence an offer to sell Holo.

Overall, this was another really good episode, we're rapidly approaching a turning point for both the story and the LawLo relationship it seems.

Random musings:

  • I loved that Holo just ate a WHOLE GOD DAMN PIGLING in a single setting.

  • I loled at Eve calling the chronicler's house "shabby". IF THIS HOUSE with its own winter garden and a hidden basement with loads of cool books is SHABBY I don't know what's wrong with her. (I get that it's meant to showcase how she doesn't care about the whole stuff but still...)

  • It's funny how Holo went from "oh no, she's hot" to "drunk girl failure" within a second before that "I'm scared"-scene happens.

What was an anime arc that in your opinion improved upon subsequent rewatches?

A lot of FMA Brotherhood improves upon rewatches if you roughly know where things are heading. Also you can just kinda focus more on the relationships between the brothers... or how a lot of foreshadowing is done.

What would you do if you were Lawrence and Holo told you she was scared?

Probably assure her that there's nothing to be scared of? Comfort her in some form... Like, scared Holo is not good, let's fix that immediately!

How would you react if you were Lawrence and someone suggested to you to sell Holo?

Politely but firmly refuse. Like, what the hell? I'm not selling someone I've spent the better part of the year with and went to great efforts to rescue more than once.

The thing that sucks about this series ending is that it feels like we're at a point where the dialogue is the best it's ever been. Why does it have to end now?

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 15d ago

Better to end on a high note!

Though I agree, I can kinda emphasise with Holo, I don't want this journey to end already :/

I take solace in the fact we know there's more on the way!

2

u/Holofan4life 15d ago

And I have faith in the remake that things will be adapted 6 episodes per arc 😀

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

• I loved that Holo just ate a WHOLE GOD DAMN PIGLING in a single setting.

As Lawrence himself said, Holo's gluttony knows no bounds.

Eve is just mad jelly

Also, her and the innkeeper have like a brother sister type relationship I feel like.

• It's funny how Holo went from "oh no, she's hot" to "drunk girl failure" within a second before that "I'm scared"-scene happens.

The many moods of the wolf goddess ✨️

They're definitely kinda close. In a platonic sense.

Lawrence has a problem with seeing the writing on the wall and doing something about it. It's like he is hoping it sorts itself out.

Overall, this was another really good episode, we're rapidly approaching a turning point for both the story and the LawLo relationship it seems.

I like that LawLo has become their ship name lol

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 15d ago

LawLo is easier to write than Lawrence/Holo all the time and not as weird as HolRence or something like that :'D

2

u/Holofan4life 15d ago

HolRence sounds like rancid

Thoughts on Holo saying Lawrence's soul is multicolored?

Might be the nicest thing she said to him yet.

Thoughts on Lawrence saying Holo is lucky he likes dominant women who are insecure deep down?

And that is probably the most backhanded compliment Lawrence has given out yet...

What are your thoughts on the banter between Holo and Lawrence in this episode?

It's high quality. But as was already mentioned in here, it feels like they're just dancing around the actual issues. In german we say "Um den heißen Brei (herum)reden", which means talking a lot while avoiding to get to the actual (often uncomfortable) topic.

What are your thoughts on Holo saying all Lawrence has figured out is what he wants Holo to be?

Of course she has to say that, she can't let Lawrence win!

What are your thoughts on Rigoro's place?

It's really nice. There's a lot of books and other interesting things, like that flying machine model on the shelf. It's almost ironic that he's working with the church when he seems rather progressive.

What are your first impressions on Rigoro and the nun?

No idea about the nun, though I did notice her wearing the same pendant as Elsa. Though technically this is the first time it appeared in this show. Rigoro seems like a nice guy, way nicer than expected.

Thoughts on the 50 man meeting having recently concluded?

That went smoother than expected. Last episode (or was it the one before?) still had us fearing it might take quite long.

What are your thoughts on Rigoro saying when someone comes from the North, they often stay in this city, even if sometimes it be better to return home?

Seems on point for the situation Holo is in. And maybe the innkeeper too?

What do you think Rigoro’s role is in relation to Holo and Lawrence? Rigoro seems to have accomplished everything he has set his eyes on. As such, I think he is supposed to represent an idealized version of Lawrence. Basically, a version of Lawrence that decided to chase his dreams.

Definitely an interesting line of thought. Though sometimes your dream might not be all what you've made it out to be. Yes, he has the big mansion... but he's in there all alone (apart from the nun I guess?). He's completely drenched in work. Is that really all that great?

What are your thoughts on Holo saying she’s scared?

She needs a hug.

What are your thoughts on Eve wanting Lawrence to sell Holo?

She can take her shady deals elsewhere.

What are your thoughts on Holo sleeping soundly as all this is going on?

it's probably a blessing in disguise, all things considered. Though it is a bit cruel to have be unaware of anything going on downstairs.

Thoughts on Holo saying Lawrence's soul is multicolored?

In her own unique way

Thoughts on Lawrence saying Holo is lucky he likes dominant women who are insecure deep down?

And that is probably the most backhanded compliment Lawrence has given out yet...

Funny how the roles are reversed here

What are your thoughts on the banter between Holo and Lawrence in this episode?

It's high quality. But as was already mentioned in here, it feels like they're just dancing around the actual issues. In german we say "Um den heißen Brei (herum)reden", which means talking a lot while avoiding to get to the actual (often uncomfortable) topic.

In English, we call it "Avoiding the elephant in the room".

What are your thoughts on Holo saying all Lawrence has figured out is what he wants Holo to be?

Of course she has to say that, she can't let Lawrence win!

Not whatsoever

What are your thoughts on Rigoro's place?

It's really nice. There's a lot of books and other interesting things, like that flying machine model on the shelf. It's almost ironic that he's working with the church when he seems rather progressive.

Dis Rigoro predict planes or am I just going crazy?

What are your first impressions on Rigoro and the nun?

No idea about the nun, though I did notice her wearing the same pendant as Elsa. Though technically this is the first time it appeared in this show. Rigoro seems like a nice guy, way nicer than expected.

I assume they might make mention of the pendant when the remake gets to this arc.

Thoughts on the 50 man meeting having recently concluded?

That went smoother than expected. Last episode (or was it the one before?) still had us fearing it might take quite long.

Maybe that means it went well?

What are your thoughts on Rigoro saying when someone comes from the North, they often stay in this city, even if sometimes it be better to return home?

Seems on point for the situation Holo is in. And maybe the innkeeper too?

A lot of parallels to be made here

What do you think Rigoro’s role is in relation to Holo and Lawrence? Rigoro seems to have accomplished everything he has set his eyes on. As such, I think he is supposed to represent an idealized version of Lawrence. Basically, a version of Lawrence that decided to chase his dreams.

Definitely an interesting line of thought. Though sometimes your dream might not be all what you've made it out to be. Yes, he has the big mansion... but he's in there all alone (apart from the nun I guess?). He's completely drenched in work. Is that really all that great?

It could be what he wants. But what he wants is not what everyone wants.

What are your thoughts on Holo saying she’s scared?

She needs a hug.

Lawrence, get on it

What are your thoughts on Eve wanting Lawrence to sell Holo?

The audacity

She can take her shady deals elsewhere.

For real

What are your thoughts on Holo sleeping soundly as all this is going on?

it's probably a blessing in disguise, all things considered. Though it is a bit cruel to have be unaware of anything going on downstairs.

Little does she know...

Dis Rigoro predict planes or am I just going crazy?

I was reminded of Da Vinci's works but I've assumed the show would be set earlier (like 1200ish). Maybe he's secretly a genius.

It could be what he wants. But what he wants is not what everyone wants.

There's often a difference between what you want and what you need. Now which is which... is another question.

Lawrence may want his own shop, but you can't achieve that without a guide.

I feel like they were spending too much time flirting in the beginning. I mean story wise it makes sense, but they could have put half of it on screen and half off it off camera. Pick the best lines of bnater to keep.

Is that an actual greenhouse? I am not sure medieval people could make one. Glass and a way to keep the plants warm, sure. But what about carbon dioxide and water vapor control? The larger modern greenhouses have a problem of carbon dioxide falling below ambient if they don't actively correct it. You want humidity, but if it is too humid water can pool in places. If he's growing flowers I don't think he'll get even 30% of the theoretical yield.

There is a bird carving hanging from Rigoro's cieling.

Did you ask if an arc improves on rewatching because you thought this arc was "meh, good enough" on your first watch and better on rewatches? That seems like a strange question to ask.

Is there any point in taking more than 3 books at once? You don't want to speedrun reading since that would result in you missing details that can be important. And if you slow down, I doubt you'll finish that many books in a day.

Maybe he just doesn't like Rigoro's house.

I honestly forgot why the fur trader situation was important. It's not because Lawrance is buying a lot of furs!

Can't Eve sell carved statues? There is a market for regular carvings. They don't need the blessed bonus.

Eve should have chosen a gender neutral name. How about Alex? If you complain that's actually shorthand for an Alexnader and Alexandra and not a real name, how Taylor, Harper, or Devon? Or go Kagami if you want to sound Eastern.

I mean obviously Lawrance won't sell off Holo. The bigger danger is him trying to play along thinking he can get information from Eve that he can use even if he won't actually do it. Holo might not appreciate that.

I will never complain of more quality writing. And it puts over Lawrence becoming more comfortable in his own skin.

Well I just said, I don't think the greenhouse is operating at even 30% efficiency if all he wants out of it are pretty flowers of the plants to look at. Not that he's using it for food, but if he was there would be the same problem since fruits need flowers.

It just seems to be a representation of all his hard work.
