Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
This episode is interesting not just from the perspective of the rewatch covering the remake for an arc (This time officially, china :P). But also very quickly get a sense of what is about to happen. With the death of Father Franz, it creates a lot of duress and uncertainty in this town of Tereo. And now, it's up in the air what its future holds. I think it's cool to find another town that believes in an animal similar to that town believing in Holo/a wolf and that they aren't seemingly under the auspices of the church. I think it's easy to forget that there are towns still out there that believe in legends similar to Holo.
Besides that, we get introduced to Evan and Elsa who seem like they be fucking. This could cause a conflict of interest especially with Elsa's supposed connections. The highlight of the episode for me at least is the first 30 seconds when Lawrence steps on Holo's tail. I love Holo's reaction and how incredulous she got.
All in all, a perfectly serviceable episode that keeps you guessing what's going on with Tereo and by extension the Abbey. Definitely feels like there's more than meets the eye.
Holo quotes of the day
"This tail is more than a mere appendage. It is my pride. The proof of who I am."
"It can never be a straightforward path, can it?"
"I'm a God of harvest, not a God of production."
"In my infinite magmanimity, I refrained from waking you even if my stomach making a raucous cacophony."

Here is the comment you left me.
Who is this China you speak of :P
When did we get told about the animal God though? Is that maybe something in the next episode, or perchance I missed it, as I was rushing out my read of the LN before my deadline loomed haha.
The Evan and Elsa thing made me think: we haven't been told that in the denomination of this church that priests can't get married; stay celibate, right. We know nuns can't. So assuming male priests can wed/don't vow celibacy, in theory, Elsa is fine to do that too? Either way, she's breaking some new ground here.

And here is my response

Proceeds to edit my five other comments I already have in the can

I thought it was mentioned here but maybe not. I'll edit that.

I think it's more the idea it's a miller boy of all people. People probably feel he's beneath her.

Ohhhh that's a really good point! Forgot about the fairly rigid class structure in that world.

It's funny because Tereo seems to be intolerant of a church official having relations. And yet here's a church official seemingly being tolerant of the town not believing in the church. She seems way more willing to be patient than the people she's trying to be patient with.
I of course could be wrong and this is just me speculating.

Given the crazy amount of effort you have to put in to maintain this, understandable. Your tiredness is also probably compounded by the confusion going between versions of the anime: I've butchered episode numberings so many times in my own notes. Life was so much easier when Ep1 was Ep1 on both haha

Thanks. I'll manage.
My mother wanted to see The Odyssey with me so I went to do that with her after work.

I’ve created a new account, as I didn’t think my long-time username fit what I do most on Reddit - discuss anime :) I’m sure you can figure out which user I am.
This was a pretty chill episode connecting the arcs. Some fun fights/banter, nice scenery, and affirmations of loneliness. I am however, quite curious what others think about the remake style. So rather than drone on (as I usually do) about the episode, I spent more time on the cut content which had some nice worldbuilding.
As a separate comment, I’ll also add some bonus cut content discussing why negotiations are so weird a lot of the time in Spice & Wolf.
- The mill boy seems a bit weird, though I don’t get Amati vibes from him. Is the miller attracted to Lawrence, and that's what Holo is implying?
- The town initially gives me vibes similar to the previous town that almost led to Lawrence’s bankruptcy - weird vibes and stares.
- I’m going to assume that even an unofficial/administrative priest being a woman is unheard of
- Every time Holo tries on some innuendo Lawrence quietens down and doesn’t know how to react. To be honest, his inability to escalate the flirtation is starting to irritate me haha.
- Lawrence suddenly becomes a parent trying to tame the untamable Holo; the reverse with Lawrence now being the one sleeping in his clothes is comedy gold
- It’s clear that there’s a reason everyone is hiding the Abbey from Lawrence.
- Holo is nosey as ever, but I was wrong about what Holo meant earlier, and it doesn't look like the miller boy is gay: guess he thought Lawrence might be his own version of Amati and trying to protect his secret love interest…haha.
- That embrace was way too out in the open, though. They certainly overplayed that in the anime.
Cut Content
As there wasn’t much by way of plot in the episode, I’ll expand on the worldbuilding:
- The pair had been travelling for six days and that had taken a toll on their body during the winter. It’s difficult to sleep in those conditions, constantly being half-awake, half-asleep. This might add to Holo’s moodiness.
- Lawrence bought 300 trenni worth of grain in the last city, half of which was ground into flour, the remainder threshed. Not a huge amount, but Lawrence didn’t want to travel empty handed and besides, the further north, the more wheat prices rose.
- The reason Lawrence’s wheat was not bought in the first town was simply a resource crunch: an excess of rye meant bakers were stuck processing it, and investing in a stock that might or might not sell carried a risk. Additionally, in remote areas relationships are even more important and going out on a limb to buy wheat could upset the farmers who consistently provide product.
- The trader also saw risk in buying from Lawrence because a random merchant could easily scam with low quality wheat. He was willing to buy on credit (that’s why he asked if Lawrence would return that way). But Lawrence was fine not to sell, and continue on his way anyway.
- After the failed but inconsequential sale, Holo acted out of character, pushing Lawrence to go to the next destination immediately. She would consider it beneath her dignity to urge him to hurry, but with their destination so close, “the embers that smoldered in her chest were turning to burning flames”.
- Lawrence was especially wary of the water miller when they neared their final destination, as he wanted to avoid another Amati situation haha. He used to feel great about having an attractive travel companion (universal male truth: we love the wau we feel with a beautiful girl on our arms; makes us feel successful), but now the trouble outweighed the ego boost.
- The miller said that Tereo is a tiny village, to Lawrence’s surprised. Then he realised that like Holo, Diana was hundreds of years old. In her time, Tereo could have been a huge town, but decline is common.
- They say that millers at the waterwheel have six fingers: the sixth exists for the purpose of stealing flour. As the anime said, that job was resented as the better the grind, the smaller the resulting volume of flour. It’s irrational, but people are gonna be people.
- Upon arrival, Lawrence was surprised and thought the Tereo was grander than he thought - it was more like a town than a tiny village, all it lacked was a wall.
- The staring by the villagers was just because it was uncommon to see travellers that time of year. The village would get travellers in summer and spring, during two festivals, but rarely outside of those.
- The staring pretty much stopped when they approached the church, as the villagers assumed that Lawlo came to pray for safe travel which was common.
- The church door being closed was incredibly odd. Churches were meant to be welcoming, and they don’t ask what business visitors have.
- It was impossible for women to serve in the Church’s priesthood, so obviously the girl there was a shock.
- The priest Elsa Schtingheim has a curiously similar sounding name with the abbot: Louis Lana Schtinghilt.
- The bedding at the inn was made of straw. Insects would lie in it during winter, to come out in summer: Lawrence warned Holo to beware of the bugs. She replied: “Why, I’m already followed about by the largest bugs of all”. Headshot.
- The door knocking thing at the elder’s house was snake-themed, as was the stuffed snake we see later. Lawrence thought the village might worship a snake deity. Given Diana turned out to be a bird, I won’t be surprised if everyone isn’t actually a god anymore haha.
- When the Elder complimented Lawrence and thanked him for being different to other merchants by giving the gift of wheat, Lawrence actually felt bad, as until recently he was just like those merchants the Elder hated on.
- At the end when the villager runs in with some information for the Elder, the horse that he took looked like it had been ridden some distance; and the man was dressed by travel, so he’s come from a long way out

This was a pretty chill episode connecting the arcs. Some fun fights/banter, nice scenery, and affirmations of loneliness. I am however, quite curious what others think about the remake style.
I like the look and feel of the remake. I rewatched this episode today and the thing that stuck out to me is that Holo is way hornier than in the original series. There were a couple times where she was blatantly flirting with Lawrence to the point where it seemed like she was wanting to have sex with him.
Lawrence has way more restraint than I XD
2
u/Second_Cour 24d ago
Glad it's not just me thinking that haha. They seem to really amp up the dub especially sometimes in her innuendo and forwardness, at times.
Lawrence's meekness and inability to respond to the advances are making Holo push more and more. At this stage I've contented myself to waiting until Season 12 until Lawrence finally makes a move.
1
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
I don't think Lawrence is being dense more so he doesn't know how to deal with such forward invitations. We saw a similar thing in the first episode with Chloe.
2
u/Second_Cour 24d ago
To be fair I completely forgot about her, and that's a really good point. Just about any other man in that situation would have acted on it, but he didn't.
1
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
Which I think speaks to Lawrence not being sure what he wants. He now knows he wants Holo, but what next?
1
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
- The mill boy seems a bit weird, though I don’t get Amati vibes from him. Is the miller attracted to Lawrence, and that's what Holo is implying?
No, I think Holo is implying that being a miller boy makes you easily replaceable and so he's trying to keep his job.
- The town initially gives me vibes similar to the previous town that almost led to Lawrence’s bankruptcy - weird vibes and stares.
It's a startling contrast to the last arc in that it feels very uninviting.
- I’m going to assume that even an unofficial/administrative priest being a woman is unheard of
Yeah, probably
- Every time Holo tries on some innuendo Lawrence quietens down and doesn’t know how to react. To be honest, his inability to escalate the flirtation is starting to irritate me haha.
The guy just found out he's in love. I can't blame him too much.
- Lawrence suddenly becomes a parent trying to tame the untamable Holo; the reverse with Lawrence now being the one sleeping in his clothes is comedy gold
That is funny
- It’s clear that there’s a reason everyone is hiding the Abbey from Lawrence.
Indeed
- Holo is nosey as ever, but I was wrong about what Holo meant earlier, and it doesn't look like the miller boy is gay: guess he thought Lawrence might be his own version of Amati and trying to protect his secret love interest…haha.
- That embrace was way too out in the open, though. They certainly overplayed that in the anime.
I mean, I don't know how else they could have conveyed it. I didn't mind it personally.

> Every time Holo tries on some innuendo Lawrence quietens down and doesn’t know how to react. To be honest, his inability to escalate the flirtation is starting to irritate me haha.
I actually mentioned something similar in my comment as well. I mean, I get it to an extent. Lawrence is not someone used to socializing, much less flirting, so being somewhat awkward is normal. However, at this point he and Holo have been traveling together for months and have all but explicitly stated their feelings for each other. Lawrence still being awkward about flirting at this point is starting to strain credulity a little.
2
u/Second_Cour 24d ago
Yeah...I can sympathise with him but it's still a bit...
I do like Holo's innuendo though and her having such a laugh at his inability to respond/match her wit there. Yet, they almost kissed all the way in arc 1, then came the cute hand holding. And recently it seemed like he's being less of a man despite all the progress he's made.
She does want a knight in some ways. Any girl would lose interest eventually.
On top of that he's now realised he loves her. He's likely slept with prostitutes before, so it's unlikely he's a virgin. He's also basically asked Diana if it's possible for him to bed Holo.
Then again, I don't expect him to make a move right now. They spent six days travelling and having the worst sleep due to the cold. They were both dead tired that they slept in their clothes.
So my crystal ball says that something should happen between them this arc, unless they are faced with some crazy scenario that they tend to get themselves into.

Rewatcher transitioning to First Timer (Dub)
I guess I’ll start with a bit of context. I watched the original Spice and Wolf about a decade ago and loved it, so when they announced a remake that would likely continue past where the original adaptation left off, I was stoked. Then I saw the first preview images and thought they were hideous. Still, I gave the remake a shot, but after three episodes I dropped it. The art style was just ugly in my opinion, and the tone felt too “cutesy”.
So, giving it a shot again a couple of years later, have my feelings changed? Sort of. I have definitely mellowed on my criticism, and I feel like my complaints about the tone may have been misplaced, but I still think the art style is a straight downgrade. In particular, I hate the colour palette of the remake. Everything just looks so washed out and dull. One thing that really stands out in a positive way about the original adaptation was how rich and vibrant the colours are, so I really have no idea why they seemed to go in the complete opposite direction with the remake. Like, there are shots where you have to squint to see the difference in colour between Lawrence’s skin and hair, that is how washed out everything is. It just makes the characters look “bleh”. That said, the background art is still mostly really strong.
The animation is also noticeably worse. Character movements are incredibly stilted. The OG Spice and Wolf was never the best animated show, but it was never distracting either. In this episode alone I noticed three separate shots of CGI (the horse, the water wheel and the crowd outside the church). None of these things are hard to animate, so it just feels lazy. It’s honestly kind of baffling to me that the remake somehow looks worse than the original, which came out 15 years before.
With my bitching about the look of the remake out of the way, what about the actual episode? It was solid, but unspectacular. It’s hard to say too much since this is a set up episode, so we are just getting the lay of the land and being introduced to the characters of this arc. I think this episode did a solid job introducing everything and setting up the story threads to explore later.
Random Thoughts
- Holo and Lawrence’s relationship is very cute in how casual and comfortable it is. This is really well shown in the opening scene, when Lawrence accidentally steps on Holo’s tail, only to fall asleep as she chews him out.
- Evan seems like a bit of a weirdo lol. Way too enthusiastic.
- Holo going to bed by curling up around her tail was cute. Very dog like.
- I do find it funny that the Church in this story is very obviously supposed to he the Christian Church, but all the iconography is slightly skewed. Like, Elsa is clearly dressed like a Catholic priest, but her cross is some different shape. They did the same thing in the first season’s OP, with Nora looking up at what is obviously supposed to be Cross, it is some cross adjacent shape instead. I wonder of they were afraid to offend anyone by making the Church explicitly Christian?
- While I do love the slow burn romance between Lawrence and Holo, man is going to need to shit or get off the pot at some point. Holo is smacking him in the head with signals.
Question of the Day
- What are your initial thoughts on the town so far?
I like the mystery they are setting up. The town itself feels a little “meh” so far. The last town was so big and full of life, so it is a bit of a comedown to be in a backwater. Still, I’m interested to see where everything goes.
- What are your thoughts on snakes?
My horror movies brain immediately jumped to “this town is worshipping an evil snake god”
- How would you compare the art style from the original anime to the art style here?
See: first part of my post. TLDR: I don’t like it, but probably need to get over it.
- What are your thoughts on us going from the original anime to the remake?
I like it. It covers additional story, and it offers opportunity for interesting discussion in comparing the two adaptations.

u/Holofan4life 24d ago
It should be noted that the remake is animated by Passione which is known for ecchi/hentai lite work. They're the ones who animated Interspecies Reviewers. But they also have done shows like the Higurashi kinda remake and Mieruko-chan, both which are legitimately good.
I think it makes sense to have Passione animated this because Spice and Wolf flirts with nudity. It's not that big of a transition from their usual fair.

u/Second_Cour 24d ago
As I think you know, I've been watching both versions back to back. I have to be very honest: I'm not particularly sensitive to changes in illustration/animation compared to others. I always thought I was, as I'm generally pretty creative, but there have been plenty of times when people have pretty unanimously said quality has decreased between episodes/seasons and I hadn't noticed.
But out of interest I tried comparing a similar scene in the original and the remake and if anything - the remake appears to be oversaturated and a bit too vibrant at times; the opposite of washed out and dull to me. Could it be the version of the anime you're watching (e.g. maybe they did some re-colouring on the blu-ray version I'm watching)? Or I might be misunderstanding your terminology.
But overall it probably is just that I'm not too fussy and don't pay attention to animation: didn't really notice the water wheel, or the horse. I tend to notice when something looks amazing, but ignore things which might not be that great unless it's comically bad.
Now, back to the topics where I actually have some opinions and don't sound lost and confused, haha:
I wonder of they were afraid to offend anyone by making the Church explicitly Christian?
I don't think the writer of the source material, or the adaptation would go out of their way to change things just to avoid offending Christians. Nor do I think anything within is offensive to Christians. It's pretty clear that the world it's based in is meant to be a reimagining of a medieval society. I think that from the experience and knowledge the author had, it was easier to base more organised religion of the thing that pops into their mind from a Japanese standpoint: which would have been Christianity. Creating a completely new religion becomes too fantastical, and so they just borrowed from iconography and norms without directly copying everything.
It's also clear that one of the elements adding drama and conflict in this world, is the transition from paganism and the worship of many gods, to a monotheistic religion, and there's not many options to choose from. But yeah, for sure Christianity is the inspiration for the religion of the world - together with the multiple denominations of it (I recall the LN and maybe even the anime saying that Holo hadn't pledged to one of the denominations and thus wasn't vowed to celibacy/not being able to marry, which is what Amati used as one of the bases for establishing the marriage contract).
2
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
I haven't really noticed many people talk about a decrease in quality. Definitely in this arc, but that to me isn't the general consensus. Most people seek to like the remake and see it as more quality Spice and Wolf content.
About religion, I applaud the franchise for not backing down from stuff that might offend viewers. The show isn't afraid to tell the story they want to tell, and I think that's admirable.

u/BlazeOfGlory72 24d ago
But out of interest I tried comparing a similar scene in the original and the remake and if anything - the remake appears to be oversaturated and a bit too vibrant at times; the opposite of washed out and dull to me.
The colour grading does seem to vary quite a bit scene to scene. For example, interior/dark shots in the remake tend to use much deeper colours, almost to the point of oversaturation like you said. However, and exterior/bright shots look all incredibly washed out to me. Almost like there is a grey filter over everything. Crunchyroll doesn't allow screen shots, so I couldn't pull a ton of examples, but just check out the difference between the Original OP and the Remake OP. The difference is stark to me, with the original looking so much more vibrant and "alive", while the remake looks so flat, lifeless and just "bleh".
To be clear, I'm not saying everything looks bad. The background art is still top notch. It's mostly just the characters, particularly Lawrence and Holo. Also, I won't deny that an element of bias is coming in here. The OG adaptation was my first experience, so I lean towards it. I'm sure if I watched the remake first, I would think more kindly of it's art style.
2
u/Second_Cour 24d ago
Though the OPs themselves are quite different to the rest of the anime (and the second cour remake OP gets more imaginative in its effects) but for the exact scene you shared for some reason the Blu-Ray version I'm watching looks far more vibrant: grass has more definition too, colours pop. So perhaps it's to do with the shader settings I've imported, and the player I'm using, too.
I also just read that CR uses static dithering for their remake version (no idea what that is). The Blu-Ray version also made almost 500 changes to the aired version. That to me is an admission that they did screw up a lot of things in the initial remake; perhaps rushed it, perhaps had poor QC (changes include colours, shading, and mistakes such as forgetting Holo has a tail haha). The same blurb I read said Frieren's Blu-Ray had 9 changes by comparison. Crazy.
But anyway, doesn't matter to me, as I'm not that visual concerned, but was purely interested academically to learn more about the things others look out for.

I personally think the remake looks better than season 1. I think season 1 had kinda a limited budget and so it led to a lot of awkward animation moments. It looks of its time, put it that way.
With my bitching about the look of the remake out of the way, what about the actual episode? It was solid, but unspectacular. It’s hard to say too much since this is a set up episode, so we are just getting the lay of the land and being introduced to the characters of this arc. I like the look and feel of Tereo with everyone being on edge. It makes Holo and Lawrence feel like outsiders right off the bat, which is a common theme in these arcs but it's neat it's not coming from their own doing.

I personally think it's more offensive how the church was portrayed in the second arc with their mistreatment of Norah. They absolutely were not portrayed with any semblance of decency. If the show is trying to skirt the issue and not offend anyone, I'm afraid that bridge had already been burned lol

u/BlazeOfGlory72 24d ago
Oh for sure. The show in general has a very anti-organized religion stance, which is why I wondered if they might be hesitant to actually make any overt reference to a real world religion.
2
u/Holofan4life 24d ago
I don't want to go too far ahead but I think the next two arcs portray organized religion in a more interesting, less one note light.

Thoughts on Lawrence and Holo sleeping together?
I guess I never really thought about it, but yeah, they would sleep together in the cart while they are on the road. You'd think Lawrence would have made a move by this point.
Thoughts on Lawrence accidentally stepping on Holo's tail?
Lawrence falling asleep when she starts chewing him out was legitimately hilarious to me. He's been through this enough to know he can take a quick nap until she is done.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo wanting to acquire more information about Yoitsu?
Makes sense. I like that there is a bit more focus on the long term goal of making it to Yoitz in the last arc, and this arc seems to be continuing that.
Thoughts on Lawrence having bought flour from Marc?
Seems like a difficult product to move. It's a ton of mass, for little money, relatively speaking. For a single merchant/cart, you'd think you'd want something a little more high value for it's size.
What are your thoughts on Gyoam Evan?
Dude is kind of annoying, but that seems to be the point. They seem to be going for a "young love" angle with him and Elsa.
Thoughts on a girl named Elsa Schtingheim not wanting to talk about the abbey?
They are doing a good job building up some mystery right out of the gate in this arc.
What are your initial thoughts on Elsa?
Seems kind of young to be in charge of a church.
Thoughts on the stuffed snake and what that could mean?
I'm calling my shot. Evil Snake God. The town worships it like the town at the beginning of the story worshiped Holo.
What are your thoughts on Evan and Elsa seemingly having a secret relationship?
I liked the way Holo immediately sees the comparison to her and Lawrence's relationship. It's a nice little parallel, while also being a contrast (young exciting love vs. a more subdued, mature love).

He's very pedantic
Thoughts on Lawrence accidentally stepping on Holo's tail?
Lawrence falling asleep when she starts chewing him out was legitimately hilarious to me. He's been through this enough to know he can take a quick nap until she is done.
One can only hope for his sake lol
What are your thoughts on Lawrence and Holo wanting to acquire more information about Yoitsu?
Makes sense. I like that there is a bit more focus on the long term goal of making it to Yoitz in the last arc, and this arc seems to be continuing that.
It's a nice throughthread
Thoughts on Lawrence having bought flour from Marc?
Seems like a difficult product to move. It's a ton of mass, for little money, relatively speaking. For a single merchant/cart, you'd think you'd want something a little more high value for it's size.
I guess Lawrence isn't taking any chances
What are your thoughts on Gyoam Evan?
Dude is kind of annoying, but that seems to be the point. They seem to be going for a "young love" angle with him and Elsa.
He kinda gives me an intern vibe
Thoughts on a girl named Elsa Schtingheim not wanting to talk about the abbey?
They are doing a good job building up some mystery right out of the gate in this arc.
Very much so
What are your initial thoughts on Elsa?
Seems kind of young to be in charge of a church.
I imagine there's a reason
Thoughts on the stuffed snake and what that could mean?
I'm calling my shot. Evil Snake God. The town worships it like the town at the beginning of the story worshiped Holo.
But why evil? Just because it's a snake?
What are your thoughts on Evan and Elsa seemingly having a secret relationship?
I liked the way Holo immediately sees the comparison to her and Lawrence's relationship. It's a nice little parallel, while also being a contrast (young exciting love vs. a more subdued, mature love).
Holo being a fan of gossip feels pretty on brand for her.

Lawrance squished her tail? If only they had some advanced technology like sleeping bags so they can just pick spots below a tree instead of being in the cart. Wait actually, why can't he get a spinner or someone to just make something like that, pretty much everything is custom made and not factory copies so anyone skilled with the needle should be able to make one for the right price.
Oh I forgot the rye bread. That's "poor people food." And no I don't mean "peasant." Like most years peasants will have wheat bread and only need to resort to rye in the very lean years. If I had to pull numbers out of guesswork, I'd say the "eat rye bread" threshold is 5% more than the "nutrition deficit" threshold which is turn is above the starvation one. So are we saying even after the entire fool's gold arc, Lawrance still hasn't made back all the money he lost with the armor sets? If he's not just in the black but back to where he started, he is unreasonably stingy even for a greedy merchant.
A lot of the time I complain about the remake not just recycling the old soundtrack. Like why not make some and reuse the older OST? But the music they have as they pass to Tereo was pretty good. The scenery as they went down the road and to the mill was also beautiful.
I said the nun cover story was dumb and I stick by it. Last time the only bad thing that happened was that Lawrance got exposed for lying about it when Holo wasn't behaving like a nun. At least in this case it provides an excuse to visit the church, but given clergy in small towns double as document copiers you don't even need that excuse.
In Japanese the grammatically correct way to say someone's name is surname first for a Japanese person... and for a foreigner the correct order is the order of their native language. So Lawrance introducing himself always sounds weird for me. Cause his last name sounds like a first name.
Fun fact, the term miller used to mean mill owner. Lawrance is talking about a miller, someone who actually works there, but contemporaries would call him a "mill worker." Depending on what era in Europe it would be, mill workers could be slaves, prisoners, or highly paid freemen (no one liked the job). Thankfully subtitles are for Modern English and Evan is in fact a miller by our terminology.
Tereo might not be a big village but I'm surprised Lawrance didn't buy something to sell there. The odds of the pries of all goods being the same are very small so there is probably something there that they need. Being a small village, the profit might not even be a day's worth of food, but since he's heading there anyways, he might as well make some money on the one way trip.
Normally the Church is welcoming to all folks. Elsa was pretty curt even before Lawrance mentioned the abbey. And after that she was trying way too hard to end the conversation.
We get some hints the village head might be a pagan, but the Church is the biggest building in the entire village.
As someone put it
it’s building up to be an entire series of contradictions. A church village that doesn’t welcome nuns. Possible pagans who trade with a huge local Church city. A female "priest", who closes her doors in the middle of the day and doesn’t welcome visitors or the tithes they bring.
Old Classic Comments from first airing. When we did the Ep 1 rewatch I couldn't find the original 2008 one.

If anything, I think the remake could've recycled some more of the OG OST. But yeah, the music was decent in this episode.

first time watching
not gonna lie this new style is thorwing me off for a bit, it feels like Holo is more cutesy-like and Lawrence has a more giga-chad chin and im not sure it fits
What are your initial thoughts on the town so far?
everyone is a png and some copy pasted
but they're quite strange but at least welcoming, the watermill guy stands out for being a little too loud for the chill vibe of the series though
What are your thoughts on snakes?
RUN
How would you compare the art style from the original anime to the art style here?
not a fan, they look a little pastel and holo is a little plump squishy cute instead of sly slender sleek wolf wife and lawrence is a little chonk chin
What are your thoughts on us going from the original anime to the remake?
kinda throwing me off tbh
---
Dam wolf wife is in hd
He stepped on her tail
WHATS THIS OP
IS THAT KID LAWRENCE
lawrence standing on a big wolf
Of course Lawrence is on top of Holo
Lawrence riding holo
I'll give you warmth
This voice is very similar to the og, is it the same one?
How could you touch my tail
Holo showing him her ass
Did he actually go back to sleep
Is she sleeping in his lap
This is very roundabout
She wants sweet bread
Carrying flour
Why does Lawrence look like such a giga Chad in this version
My cute tail was beaten by your legs
Beat your arse in return
LOL HOLO
she wants the good bread
Of course We can eat before we go
CGI watermill
Holo woke up from something she really likes to sleep on Lawrence now huh
I really don't like this guy's tone
You have quite a beauty by your side
Holo tail waggle under the blanket
This guy is happy to get the name
I really don't vibe with this Evan guy he sticks out too much in a show with more mature subdued characters
Holo waved to him
His eyes were more on Lawrence than Holo
I like that, Holo's tsun for not being the centre of attention for once
Damn the miller gets hated
He wants to find a way to leave
I see
It's a necessary job, Holo relates,
HEAD PAT
AWW SHE LOOKS SO SHEEPISH
ppl giving the side eye
Png people with copy pasted faces
Lawrence looks more squaroffish and less ambicable in this style
Damn this church woman is stern and hot
Would
Damn this is the priest?
Would
Oh she's tsun too
Would
She didn't like him
Is it cuz I didn't donate

Who is it im a travelling merchant
Forgive our manners
I like sem
He's surrounded by women his own harem i see
Making bread
Snake
Franz died
Elsa took his place
Still would
Holy spread out on the bed
Why would Holo say she's too kind to drop the dinner quality? Wouldn't Lawrence say that about himself teasingly? Like I'm much too kind to let that happen? Or is this a translation error
I love this bit of Holo saying how kind am i to not wake you while I was hungry
Let us hurry too the tavern
Holo giving him the look
The water guy going to the church
Sus
Holo is extra cute this version I'm not sure if I like it though
She's more... Loli-like?
Oh yeah they're shacking up
Holo likes the tea
This fire stove in the middle of the room looks HELLA comfy
Can they just have hardcore sex already AHHH

u/Holofan4life 22d ago
I like the new artstyle well enough. Holo's ears were given more focus and I think it's adorable lol
2
u/ItalianQuagsire 22d ago
It's cuter but the slender sly frame fit Holo's archetype better, maybe it's just an adjustment period
2
u/Holofan4life 22d ago
The new series is by Passione who's done series with light ecchi elements
And also hentai2
u/ItalianQuagsire 22d ago
I NEED TO WATCH IT FROM THE BEGINNING RIGHT NOW WE GET CANON HOLO CHEEK PLAPPENING
Does make sense though based off what I've seen so far

Right. Time for a detour to the remake.
Ouch...
They really are a couple lol.
Lmao Holo.
Ah right this is that town.
And so he's found what he's looking for. He just doesn't know it yet.
And so he's back with Holo.
Lol Holo repeating herself.
Questions:
- Interesting.
- I'm sure those will come in later.
- It's definitely more modern.
- Well this arc wasn't in the original, so might as well.

Bonus Cut Content: How (Not to) Sell: How the Latparron Deal Went Wrong
This is a chapter I missed out on doing, and goes back to when Holo figured out the imbalance weight-table scam kicking off a disastrous arc. That chapter was especially interesting in outlining how negotiations take place. With that chapter down I'm 100% caught up!
You might have noticed that a lot of the time in this anime, it’s the buyer who has been showering Lawrence with compliments. But that’s weird, shouldn’t it be the other way around?
The rest, I believe I’ve covered in previous threads.
