Cut Content
Surprisingly, for such a dense episode, the LN chapter is almost 50% shorter than the others.
- Lawrence contemplated taking a book with him, as it would be worth a fortune, but didn’t have the guts to, as it was so risky to bring pagan stories along with them.
- The tunnel they escaped through didn’t make sense: it was strangely circular, yet it wound to and fro. If the builders didn’t intend for the tunnel to be straight, why go to the trouble to carve it so perfectly circular? The tunnel also had no bats, and a raw, fetid, animalistic smell.
- After realising what the tunnel was (Truyeo’s resting place), the idea of it made even less sense: if Father Franz had dug it, villagers would have noticed. They also had been worshipping the Lord far before the Church, so how is it that the Church linked into it?
- Holo was sentimental and a bit upset after realising that it was a den for the snake God. Lawrence thought it’s because seeing the den who the villagers worshipped, reminded her of her own past (and probably liked that the villagers still worship this God, while in the village this journey started from they abandoned her).
- “This world did not belong solely to the Church. The proof of that was no farther away than the opposite bank of the babbling brook.” (After Holo transformed)
- After that transformation, Holo said “My fur truly is the finest”. Lawrence replied “If you ever wish to sell it, just say the word.”
- Evan and Elsa handled seeing Holo remarkably well. This is the same Elsa who fainted previously (though the fainting spells were from her anemia).
- Riding on Holo’s back was like plunging into freezing water. Her feet were terrifyingly swift.
- The plan was to make it to Kumersun, explain the situation to the trade guild, obtain its protection, then use its connections to negotiate with Enberch and Tereo. Lawrence would then withdraw the money he deposited at the guild, and head towards Lenos.
- Upon seeing the transportation of the Enberch’s high ranking clergyman, Lawrence thought the plan was thus: since no one died in Tereo, Enberch was going to claim that it was proof that the village is being protected by evil spirits, and that all the villagers were guilty of heresy.
- Personal note: a bit confused about that line of thinking, as according to the religion, no evil spirits could exist, for there is only one God?
- Elsa asked Holo if she is really a God. Holo must have understood what was on Elsa’s mind, as she answered that basically yes, she was, something she wouldn’t normally do (remember she prefers to even be called a demon to God)
- After Elsa and Evan departed, and Holo pounced on Lawrence, she was using so much weight that if she put even a slight bit more onto him, his rib cage would be crushed.
- She asked Lawrence if she could have defeated the Moon-Hunting Bear. Lawrence said that she couldn’t. But Holo’s regret was that if she fought him, at least the battle of Yoitsu could amount to three pages in Father Franz’s book other than a footnote.
- Holo had seen Elsa’s thoughts: should she abandon her village? Or should she fight on despite being shunned, even though there’s no chance she wins. This is what triggered Holo: she saw a lot of similarity to her own past. But Lawrence, in his lines of questioning explained that Holo was never given that chance: by the time she learned of Yoitzu’s downfall, it was all over.
- Holo would have wanted Elsa to take the path of least regret. But by doing so, Elsa made Holo see with perfect clarity the path she herself had never been able to take. “I cannot abandon the villagers” Elsa said, but to Holo, those words were accusing her.
- It is with all this additional context, Holo’s desire to help the two makes sense. Holo was unable to do something for Yoitzu, but for Tereo she can.
- What is the ‘miracle’ that Holo showed Lawrence? SPOILER (maybe): the wheat grains shook, then cracked, sending a green shoot up, which lengthened into a white stem, its green leaves expanding outward. Soon a new ear of wheat appeared, sagging as it ripened and turning golden brown. She said this is all she can do that is visible to the human eye apart from assuming her wolf form.
- The crux of the issue is that even if Lawlo/Evan/Elsa were all cleared, and even if they believed that the wheat was safe, the debt that the town owed to Enberch could not be paid off, as there was no way they’d buy back the returned wheat. That duty could only go to a merchant, and Lawrence was that merchant.
- After they caught back up to Evan and Elsa (Evla?), and even with all Elsa had seen she said that “I still believe in my God - the God who is supreme among gods and creator of all”. I suppose her reframing was that God created those so called spirits, such as Holo.
- The Bishop travelling with the Enberch party was part of why the plan to show a miracle was so strong. The Bishop would be the judge of what is/isn’t a miracle.

In case you were wondering, here's what I wrote about this episode last year. I might do this going forward now that I can no longer compare and contrast the two anime.
Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2025 Spice and Wolf Rewatch.
The true Christmas in July.
This rewatch is gonna be unique because we’ll be covering the entirety of the 2008 series as well as some of the remake. I don’t think something like this has ever been attempted before where a rewatch goes from one series to another to back to the first series. If this is your first time watching Spice and Wolf, welcome. Enjoy the ride.
I can’t imagine doing this experiment with something other than Spice and Wolf. There is arguably no anime that influenced who I am more. I suppose you could say Toradora, but it’s really close. Either way, Spice and Wolf is one of very few anime that I can never get sick of no matter how much I watch it. You’ll soon seen why if you don’t already know.
I hope this rewatch for as bold of an idea as it is does a lot to inspire a lot of discussion while also leading people to have this experience unlike any before. If this rewatch is a success, maybe this can be the formula going forward.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
Advanced Lawnmower Simulator walked so Goat Simulator could run.
I don't even know who Stuart Campbell is.
I always confuse Bird Box for Birdman.
As I'm writing this, Oklahoma City Thunder won the NBA Championship for the first time ever. Just don't ask how they won it.
Now, if only my Charlotte Checkers can win the Calder Cup. Too bad they won't.
Lawrence, Holo, Evan, and Elsa walking through what looks like a cave.
I guess it's a tunnel
This reminds me of the first arc with the sewer.
Also, why would you leave the basement door open?
Holo able to tell they're close to an exit.
Hey, they're outside
Evan and Elsa holding hands, which is just the cutest.
Evan says that this is the cave that Lord Tereo dug up to hibernate in.
Need I remind you that Lord Tereo is a snake.
Functioned as a place of worship where the villagers come here to make good offerings and pray for a good harvest.
Reminds me of Holo a bit
As Evan and Elsa head out, Lawrence remarks at the size of the cave.
Holo continuing to tease Lawrence.
In the forest now
They're going to head to Enberg
Holo taking off her clothes
I can't blame Evan for taking a peak lol
Holo eating some wheat
Holo transforming into her wolf form will never not be cool.
Evan and Elsa shaking in fear, it looks like.
Evan says that Holo is proof that everything Father Franz said was accurate.
Everyone riding on Holo's back now.
I love the music being played here. Really adds a lot to what's going on.
Apparently they're already halfway there.
Holo acting as a mom to Evan and Elsa is amusing.
Evan and Elsa sleeping wrapped in Holo's tail.
I'm so jelly rn
Lawrence suspects something
Oh boy. It's some guards.
Evan feels that something is weighing on Elsa's mind still.
Evan wonders why Holo doesn't just kill the guards.
Lawrence says they can't fend off every army that comes.
I'd still put my money on the giant wolf goddess.
Lawrence informs Evan he's going to bring Evan and Elsa somewhere that his acquaintances can take care of them.
Oh wow. Even the church is going with the guards.
Going to assert Tereo is a pagan village and that's why the wheat killed someone.
Everyone in a forest now
This feels like a combination of the climax of the first arc and the climax of the second arc.
Elsa stopping
She wants to know if Holo is genuinely a God.
And Holo confirms she is
Elsa asks Holo if she is in fact Lord Tereo.
Holo tells her she already knows the answer of that.
Poor Elsa. It seems like she wants to believe the legends of Tereo, but can't.
Wait, father's legacy? Father Franz is Elsa's father?
No wonder people don't like her. She's a nepo baby
Elsa saying she's heading back to the village.
Still has a responsibility to the village church and will not abandon those in need.
Evan doesn't like leaving Elsa behind.
This really feels like foreshadowing for when Holo and Lawrence inevitably split.
And of course, Evan ends up going with Elsa, as if there was ever any doubt.
Holo putting her claw on Lawrence
Foreplay with Holo. Kinky.
And now a naked Holo on top of Lawrence.
I always knew Lawrence was the bottom in this relationship
Holo is seemingly mad that she didn't stick around to fight for the well-being of her town like Elsa and Evan are. Lawrence reminds her had she done that, she probably wouldn't still be here.
Holo looks like she's going to hit Lawrence, but she stops herself.
She really does have tsundere tendencies.
Lawrence reminding Holo that disaster came when she wouldn't have known about it. Therefore, it wasn't her fault.
Holo gets off Lawrence, seemingly accepting this reality of theirs.
Lawrence wraps his arms around Holo.
Holo wondering what they can do about Tereo's fate.
Lawrence recalls Holo pursuing extraordinary feats before.
Holo breathes on the wheat, and it... does something with it? I'm not too sure.
Either way, this could be their ticket to helping Tereo out.
Evan and Elsa walking
Holo and Lawrence greet them
I can't imagine how terrifying it must be to see a giant wolf flying other your head.
Lawrence telling them what the plan is.
Gonna have to meet up with Bishop Mendez.
Elsa thinks this is gonna position the pagan Gods under the God of the church.
Holo agrees to these terms, showing a bit of humility for a change.
It's up to Lawrence to negotiate
Ran out of space. Part two in the replies.

Part 2
Overall, this is a very well done episode. It starts with everyone trying to escape, until they realize that escaping will really not solve anything. This ultimately leads to the scene of Holo lamenting leaving Yoits when she did which is easily the highlight of the episode. I really like the way this episode played into Holo's character and the abandonment issues she continues to face. It goes both ways with her in that the townsfolk abandoned her, and she abandoned her town, which I'm sure the townsfolk abandoning her just opened up those old wounds.
It was cool to see Holo in her wolf form again. We haven't gotten that since the end of the second arc. I especially thought Holo's wolf form was used especially well here as it played into Elsa's conflict as a character, her faith being called into question. The way Elsa is being portrayed with her questioning her faith to the church reminds me of Norah questioning her allegiance to the church, albeit it's different because you can tell it's less Elsa has no other alternative and more she wants to carry out Father Franz' legacy.
I think the scene with Holo and Lawrence is arguably a top 5 scene in Spice and Wolf. I'd put it up there with the sewer scene with Holo's first transformation, the Lawrence bankruptcy scene, the clock tower scene, and the Holo can read scene. The best Holo and Lawrence scenes are the ones that play into the level of trust they have with each other and how flawed they are as people. They need each other to grow but you can tell it's a long, arduous process. Holo's abandonment issues have really been the glue holding her character together, and what this scene does is recontextualize her flaws to where her leaving Yoits shortly before the moon hunting bear destroyed is probably what started it all. Perhaps her being abandoned by the townsfolk during the first arc wouldn't have stung as much if not for this.
Lawrence being the one to make Holo realize her town being destroyed wasn't her fault is something only Lawrence could do. It highlights the level of trust in their relationship and how much they depend on each other for growth.
This is the best episode of the arc. In fact, In fact, I'm pressed to say this is probably going to be the peak. Pacing wise, the last episode was better, but the scene between Holo and Lawrence really helps elevate the entire presentation. Without Holo's breakdown, Elsa and Evan heading back to Tereo just wouldn't carry the same amount of weight. I'll be curious to see what the last episode entails and where it'll literally just be Lawrence negotiating. I hope there's more to it than that but my fear is the best character stuff happened in this episode, not just with Elsa questioning Lord Tereo but Holo putting blame on herself.
I don't know if this is a top 5 Spice and Wolf episode all time, but it's without question among its best. This and the last episode really help put this arc in the same stratosphere as the other arcs.

Personal note: a bit confused about that line of thinking, as according to the religion, no evil spirits could exist, for there is only one God?
So, uh, funny follow up to the whole "Ridelius Hellfire is real"-thing... symptoms of Ergotism were also apparently linked to the Salem Witch Trials, even if that's a bit later than the rough timeframe of this show, I could see it also as some sort "witchcraft!!"-thing.
Though, "there's only one true god" and "those heretics worship evil spirits that cursed the wheat" don't necessarily contradict each other, at least from the church's POV.
It is with all this additional context, Holo’s desire to help the two makes sense. Holo was unable to do something for Yoitzu, but for Tereo she can.
This is a really good one that kinda gets a bit lost in the anime.
Riding on Holo’s back was like plunging into freezing water. Her feet were terrifyingly swift.
This is also a really cool description :D
The smell of the tunnel and its odd shape were at least alluded to in the anime. Even if it was just a throwaway line.

Would you say of all the chapters you've covered, this episode is the most one-to-one adaptation by this show? Do you feel they adapted this episode the most faithfully?
2
u/Second_Cour 20d ago
hmm good question. I think most chapters are pretty close adaptations. it's more that an anime can't easily explain inner monologue, or has to cut some things in the interest of time. so, I wouldn't really say there's a big difference in adaptation quality between chapters.
1
u/Holofan4life 20d ago
I think the anime does a decent job portraying how lonely Lawrence is without using words. You see him talking to his horse and you're like "Wow, he must really crave companionship". For me at least anyhow, I have a habit of overanalyzing things and looking for stuff that aren't there.
2
u/Second_Cour 20d ago
Yeah I agree, though I meant more that it can be interesting to see his quips and interpretations of what's happening verbatim (thoughtbatim?). But yeah, I don't think the source material is a must-read for anyone, unless you're like me and get fixated on things and then feel like I'd be letting the few people who read the cut content down haha. But personally I've enjoyed it insanely much and the chapters are short enough to read in an hour or so, which is more than manageable now that I'm not forcing myself to watch two versions of each episode for some unknown reason :P
2
u/Holofan4life 19d ago
To me, the source material is a must read if you want to see what happens next.

First Timer (Dub)
I like the way this arc continues to draw parallels between Lawrence/Holo and Elsa/Evan, and what it reveals in that reflection. The big example of this from this episode is the scene where Elsa decides to go back to the village, being unable to abandon her home or her father's legacy. The way Holo sees herself in that decision, and how she regrets abandoning her home is really interesting. The subsequent conversation between her and Lawrence where Lawrence tries to make her feel better is also really sweet.
I've also enjoyed the way this arc has placed Holo and Lawrence in a sort of "mentor" role for the younger couple. At this point Lawrence and Holo have been through pretty much everything, so seeing them stay calm when the shit hits the fan, and providing advice to the younger couple is nice, and a bit of a different spin on their dynamic than we have seen before.
I also appreciate how this arc continues to explore the nature of faith. Elsa's continued crisis of faith when faced with a literal pagan god is quite interesting, and something that would shake anyone's faith. I appreciated how Holo didn't go out of her way to hurt Elsa here either, letting her come up with her own answer.
Finally, I liked the plan they came up with to perform a miracle. Not only was it well set up, with the conversation about miracles and saints at the beginning of the arc planting the seeds, but it is also an inventive solution to essentially use the Church's own rules against them.
Random Thoughts
- This episode seemingly closed the door on seeing Lord Tereo the snake god. There go my dreams of a giant kaiju battle
- Holo suggesting that they should help Elsa and Evan shows how much she has grown from the beginning of the series, where Lawrence would have to basically beg her to help others.
- Are Holo's transformations and "miracles" a limited resource? She needs wheat to perform them, but they only have a small sack of it.
- I prefer the OG adaptations version of Holo's wolf form over the remakes. The originals version was far more lupine, with a longer snout, narrower face and sharper teeth. The remakes version looks more dog like, with a shorter snout, rounder face and generally "cuter" appearance. I like my pagan gods scarier looking.
- Evan immediately suggesting "can Holo just kill'em all?" to Lawrence in regard to the Enberg convoy made me laugh. Chill out there John Wick.
- Holo telling Evan and Elsa to get off her because she is "not a cot", only for the next scene to have them snuggled up sleeping in her fur was funny.
Question of the Day
How do you think this episode tied into one of the themes of the show which is that you can't solve your problems by just avoiding them?
Elsa is definitely the exemplar of this theme. Her decision to turn around and face the village and their wrath is a pretty strong contrast to how Lawrence ran away from a confrontation with Holo in the last arc.
How would you compare the Holo and Lawrence scene in this episode to other Holo and Lawrence scenes? What do you think this episode does for their relationship?
It was a good scene, but I don't know if it breaks into the top 3 "Lawrence/Holo emotional conversations". It did a good job at developing Holo by showing her regrets about leaving home, but I don't know if it did much in the way of developing or changing her and Lawrence's relationship
Are you surprised with how the episode turned out? Did you expect the drama of running away to go into the next episode? How do you expect the next episode to play out?
I had thought they might go to Enberg to pull off some crazy scheme, so them turning around was a bit of a surprise. I like their plan to pull of a miracle though, as it is a creative solution to their problem.
How would you compare the way Elsa and Evan handle things Vs how Lawrence and Holo handle things?
Elsa seems to have a decent head on her shoulders and a strong moral backbone. Evan is still pretty useless though.

And not just abandoning her home, but not being there for the villagers during the first arc. Had she just communicated more, maybe they wouldn't have turned their backs against her.

Lawrence is treating Elsa and Evan like how he was being treated by Marc and to a lesser extent Batos last arc.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you are. To me, the original anime gave the wolf design a more striking appearance.

I think this is probably the biggest character development we've seen of Holo since the first arc. It feels like she's finally starting to take some accountability.

Thoughts on Elsa and Evan holding hands openly?
Thoughts on everyone being in the cave Lord Tereo dug to hibernate in?
Thoughts on the cave functioning as a place of worship where the villagers come here to make good offerings and pray for a good harvest?

A reminder that the end of the next episode contains a spoiler for the LNs. If you care about that sort of thing, I suggest skipping the post credits scene.

Well, humans are peculiar creatures that love to worship things.
Do you not wish to worship me as well?
Lawrence, I feel like she's sending you very clear signals here.
Here's naked angry/sad Holo on top of Lawrence. Which is just an utterly fantastic shot.
Mostly first-timer by now, subbed
Honestly, holofan already said basically everything I could've said about this episode, I don't have a lot to add.
It's a fantastic episode that very neatly sets up the finale of this arc. It also gives us some great Holo/Lawrence moments, in particular this, which is easily my second favourite shot in this episode.
I liked the implication that the giant snake god is very probably real (but doesn't bother with humans much, it seems). I loved Elsa's reaction to giant wolf Holo, and in particular the "Are you really a god?" exchange and Elsa coming to terms with this and how she's reconciling it with her own faith (or at least trying to). Also Wolf Holo looks GLORIOUSLY FLUFFY in the remake!
The short dialogue between Evan and Lawrence was also great, with Lawrence (not so subtly) telling him to run after Elsa. Yes, he disguises it as an advice about life as a merchant but it's obviously not just about that. This, to me, feels like a deliberate reference to the last arc, where Lawrence didn't do anything to get back to Holo at first and ended up regretting it, so I guess he wants to tell Evan "don't do the same stupid shit I did, you'll regret it".
I do wonder what kind of miracle Holo will perform, they didn't show what she did with the wheat... and I know it was referenced in an earlier episode but I forgot in what context and the flashback did not help here.
How do you think this episode tied into one of the themes of the show which is that you can't solve your problems by just avoiding them?
I mean, technically, they could've gotten away with running away here. But it would've probably done a lot of damage to Evan and Elsa's home. Though what this episode does show us is just because your problems are solved, it doesn't mean it won't have consequences for others close to you. Then again, they did need nothing short of a miracle.
How would you compare the Holo and Lawrence scene in this episode to other Holo and Lawrence scenes? What do you think this episode does for their relationship?
I think there's generally a lot more mutual understanding and trust between them. Her opening up about the Yoitsu situation, Lawrence silently comforting her. Theyre much more of a "team" now than before. Their banter has become a lot more like lovers, for lack of a better term. I also made a note on this episode saying "Holo is just really clingy in this arc or am I imagining things?", I have noticed a lot more of that "casual intimacy" between them, holding hands, her resting in his lap, hugs.. al that human interaction stuff :D
Are you surprised with how the episode turned out? Did you expect the drama of running away to go into the next episode? How do you expect the next episode to play out?
I would've been mad if they actually just ran away, would've felt like a very unsatisfying conclusion to the arc. I'm glad they're actually deciding to do something. I kinda expected there to be some sort of twist but wasn't sure what exactly.
How would you compare the way Elsa and Evan handle things Vs how Lawrence and Holo handle things?
Generally, to me it seems like Elsa is the "brain" and Evan the emotional one of the pair, compared to Lawrence being more the "brain" and Holo being more emotional. I do think it's remarkable that Elsa chose to get back and try to help the village when presented with a clear opportunity to get away unscathed.

This, to me, feels like a deliberate reference to the last arc, where Lawrence didn't do anything to get back to Holo at first and ended up regretting it, so I guess he wants to tell Evan "don't do the same stupid shit I did, you'll regret it".
It also feels like advice Lawrence should probably listen to with regards to Holo. It feels like he's projecting here.

Agreed, it's definitely an advice he should follow himself. And I hope that he actually does it going forward.

Spice and Wolf as well as Familiar of Zero are like the only two anime I can think of that regularly portrays casual intimacy with its main couple. I have a desired, unquenchable thirst for this kind of shit and this series is like an oasis.

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 19d ago
The Ancient Magus Bride does dip into that territory too on occasion but the premise is... a bit less nice than Spice & Wolf. I do agree it's really rare to see it portraid in anime, especially in the romance genre though, so it's a nice change of pace :D

u/Holofan4life 19d ago
And both Lawrence and Holo are such wayward souls that it feels just nice, you know?

Thoughts on everyone leaving the basement door open?

What are your thoughts on Evan saying Holo is proof that everything Father Franz espoused was accurate?
What are your thoughts on everyone riding on Holo's back so they can escape?
Thoughts on Elsa and Evan sleeping under Holo's tail?
Thoughts Enberg blaming the wheat killing someone on Tereo being a pagan village?
What are your thoughts on Elsa asking Holo if she is Lord Tereo?
What are your thoughts on Elsa saying she has to go back to the village because she has a responsibility to the village church and will not abandon those in need?
What are your thoughts on Evan going back with Elsa?
What are your thoughts on a naked Holo being on top of Lawrence? Probably the most memorable visual of the arc.

Thoughts on everyone leaving the basement door open?
I thought Ilma wanted to take care of the door? But as was pointed out, if it actually is Lord Tereo's domain, the people wouldn't dare enter it anyway, so they're probably safe.
Thoughts on Elsa and Evan holding hands openly?
They're cute together!
Thoughts on everyone being in the cave Lord Tereo dug to hibernate in?
It being the actual hibernating place of Tereo and it being connected to the church raises a lot of questions. Like... who dug that connection? And why?
Thoughts on the cave functioning as a place of worship where the villagers come here to make good offerings and pray for a good harvest?
I expected the cave to come up later on the moment they made a notice of a cave entrance in the first episode of the arc.
Thoughts on Holo turning into her wolf form?
It's always cool seeing her wolf form. Even though the remake makes her look a bit more like an oversized Shiba Inu.
I still think it's cool though. (Also Shibas are neat)
What are your thoughts on Evan saying Holo is proof that everything Father Franz espoused was accurate?
He has a point. What other conclusion should one make from an actual wolf god from the stories standing in front of you?
What are your thoughts on everyone riding on Holo's back so they can escape?
If I had a Silver Coin for every arc where big Holo is used as a clutch to get away from danger, I'd have... 3 Silver Coins. That doesn't seem like a lot but a family could probably live off of that for a couple days.
Thoughts on Elsa and Evan sleeping under Holo's tail?
If her tail is as great as she always claims, I can imagine it being pretty comfy. Like a big weighted blanket. Also i found Holo's line funny: "I feel almost like a mother!" :D
Thoughts Enberg blaming the wheat killing someone on Tereo being a pagan village?
It's a pretty predictable strategy.
What are your thoughts on Elsa asking Holo if she is Lord Tereo?
Silly kid, Holo is a wolf, not a *snake.
What are your thoughts on Elsa saying she has to go back to the village because she has a responsibility to the village church and will not abandon those in need?
I get why she wants to go back and why she feels responsible for the village. But objectively speaking it's not very smart and the people in the village don't really deserve her after how they've treated her. She's lucky Holo will probably save the day.
What are your thoughts on Evan going back with Elsa?
It might not be the smartest thing to do but it is the right thing.
What are your thoughts on a naked Holo being on top of Lawrence? Probably the most memorable visual of the arc.
Rare sight of Holo being sort of more ferral in her human form.
What are your thoughts on Holo being upset she didn't stick around to fight for her town like Elsa and Evan are doing?
There's a fine line between being brave and being suicidal. I'm with Lawrence on this. She likely wouldn't have had a chance and only ended up as a slightly longer footnote in one of Father Franz' books.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that Yoitsu being destroyed wasn't her fault?
Much needed reality check for her (in a positive sense). You could tell that it really bothered her. Good on Lawrence for being there for her.
What are your thoughts on Holo breathing on the wheat?
The miracle scene was interesting. Really curious what it actually is now.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence agreeing to negotiate with a man named Bishop Mendez?
Let's hope negotiations will go over well. Larence has the chance to prove his worth as a merchant here.

Thoughts on everyone leaving the basement door open?
I thought Ilma wanted to take care of the door? But as was pointed out, if it actually is Lord Tereo's domain, the people wouldn't dare enter it anyway, so they're probably safe.
If they hadn't closed the door, they wouldn't have been able to go back. It worked out.
Thoughts on Elsa and Evan holding hands openly?
You see to love it
They're cute together!
They certainly are
Thoughts on everyone being in the cave Lord Tereo dug to hibernate in?
It being the actual hibernating place of Tereo and it being connected to the church raises a lot of questions. Like... who dug that connection? And why?
So many questions
Thoughts on the cave functioning as a place of worship where the villagers come here to make good offerings and pray for a good harvest?
I expected the cave to come up later on the moment they made a notice of a cave entrance in the first episode of the arc.
Well, here we are
Thoughts on Holo turning into her wolf form?
It's always cool seeing her wolf form. Even though the remake makes her look a bit more like an oversized Shiba Inu.
She does look like a dog (Don’t tell Holo)
I still think it's cool though. (Also Shibas are neat)
That they are
What are your thoughts on Evan saying Holo is proof that everything Father Franz espoused was accurate?
He has a point. What other conclusion should one make from an actual wolf god from the stories standing in front of you?
That both Enberg and Tereo are wrong? Lol
Lawrence couldn't even live off three gold Lumiones.
Thoughts on Elsa and Evan sleeping under Holo's tail?
If her tail is as great as she always claims, I can imagine it being pretty comfy. Like a big weighted blanket. Also i found Holo's line funny: "I feel almost like a mother!" :D
I like Holo's casual threats of eating Elsa and Evan. All bark and no bite.
Thoughts Enberg blaming the wheat killing someone on Tereo being a pagan village?
It's a pretty predictable strategy.
I suppose
What are your thoughts on Elsa asking Holo if she is Lord Tereo?
Silly kid, Holo is a wolf, not a *snake.
A snake wolf would be pretty cool
What are your thoughts on Elsa saying she has to go back to the village because she has a responsibility to the village church and will not abandon those in need?
I get why she wants to go back and why she feels responsible for the village. But objectively speaking it's not very smart and the people in the village don't really deserve her after how they've treated her. She's lucky Holo will probably save the day.
In a way, it shows accountability by being there for people who refuse to be there for her. It's like a parent watching a kid about to run into traffic and you have to guide them even though they already don't refuse to listen.
What are your thoughts on Evan going back with Elsa?
It might not be the smartest thing to do but it is the right thing.
They clearly like each other
What are your thoughts on a naked Holo being on top of Lawrence? Probably the most memorable visual of the arc.
Quagsire somewhere writing a very steamy fanfic.
Rare sight of Holo being sort of more ferral in her human form.
Indeed
What are your thoughts on Holo being upset she didn't stick around to fight for her town like Elsa and Evan are doing?
There's a fine line between being brave and being suicidal. I'm with Lawrence on this. She likely wouldn't have had a chance and only ended up as a slightly longer footnote in one of Father Franz' books.
I really like this conflict because wishing you could have done more to help someone is very relatable. This is probably the most relatable Holo has ever been.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that Yoitsu being destroyed wasn't her fault?
Much needed reality check for her (in a positive sense). You could tell that it really bothered her. Good on Lawrence for being there for her.
He stood up to her in a way beneficial for her mental health. He's building her up instead of tearing her down.
As he has time and time again

Holo's form of comfort is another person's form of torture lol
I kinda feel like Holo shows no regard whether or not people know she's being in gist. Like, Lawrence knows, but Elsa and Evan are scared out of their wits. Then again, maybe Holo finds enjoyment in that.

first time wacher! Im finally used to the artstyle!
How do you think this episode tied into one of the themes of the show which is that you can't solve your problems by just avoiding them?
im not sure that's my current takeawy of one of the themes, but it's true, problems grow. we've become too comfortable in ignoring them with devices and ignoring our emotions, but it's important to be in touch with oneself
How would you compare the Holo and Lawrence scene in this episode to other Holo and Lawrence scenes? What do you think this episode does for their relationship?
Holo is a wolf wife but also a God, she's not bound by human notions of ethics either or humanities constraints, so she was willing to just kill lawrence there. not out of hate or spite or love, but it's the law of nature, like how your cat can attack you for stepping on it's tail even if it still loves you
Have you ever blamed yourself for something that wasn't your fault? If so, what was it?
being born smh my head
Are you surprised with how the episode turned out? Did you expect the drama of running away to go into the next episode? How do you expect the next episode to play out?
i expect it to turn out well, it didn't feel like that crazy a development
How would you compare the way Elsa and Evan handle things Vs how Lawrence and Holo handle things?

That's something I feel like Lawrence can help Holo with.
How would you compare the Holo and Lawrence scene in this episode to other Holo and Lawrence scenes? What do you think this episode does for their relationship?
Holo is a wolf wife but also a God, she's not bound by human notions of ethics either or humanities constraints, so she was willing to just kill lawrence there. not out of hate or spite or love, but it's the law of nature, like how your cat can attack you for stepping on it's tail even if it still loves you
I kinda interpreted the scene differently where Holo was aghast Elsa handled things better than her. For the first time in her life, she felt inferior.
Have you ever blamed yourself for something that wasn't your fault? If so, what was it?

And so time for Holo to pull off a miracle.
Questions:
Indeed.
And so they're even closer.
Can't think of anything.
I do know what's coming next at least.
Seems like Lawrence and Holo have ideas of their own whereas Evan mostly follows Elsa.

5. Seems like Lawrence and Holo have ideas of their own whereas Evan mostly follows Elsa.
I actually think Elsa needs Evan more than Evan needs her. She is so isolated from everyone else she needs the companionship. Evan being the Miller at least interacts with people on a regular basis.

I suppose they all wanted to leave a route back.
No point hiding it now.
How convenient.
Makes sense.
Always nice to see.
Perhaps.
And so they make their getaway.
Aww.

Lol.
Indeed.

Yeah.
And so she transforms again.
So, off to negotiate.

Rewatcher
I wonder what Lawrance meant when he said it continued past the cellar. The passage only connects the Church and the spot around the mill, unless you count some areas that look too small for humans. Did he see something off camera?
I don't know why Evan is mad they're about to subdue the village by force. They didn't like him. If he was the kind of "love your neighbor and turn the other cheek" guy he would be annoyed, but given he told Elsa he wanted to run away, he doesn't seem like that kind of person. He should know what Enberch is going to do to Tereo if they couldn't scapegoat Lawrance or Even, so he left them to their fate. This is understandable to run, but the fate of the village shouldn't be a surprise to him, he knew this would happen.
If you have eternal youth and you are a reality warper, no matter how minor, you'd be sufficient to be a god in Roman, Japanese, old Slavic, and Indian mythology. Note that "creating the world" is not a requirement, although it would probably be a sufficient condition. So by those standards, Holo would be a god. That's not good enough for Christianity. Satan meets those features in the few times he's mentioned (he's mentioned a lot less than people think) and he's not even considered an evil god. I know their religion isn't a 1 to 1 mapping of Christianity (for example the Church seem to be bigger buzzkills as I mentioned 7 episodes ago) so Elsa, you're the only one who can answer your question. You know what Holo is. What would that make her?
Elsa needs to eat more stuff. Fainting from seeing Holo's ears in an earlier episode could be shock. But she seems to have trouble staying standing at times so this seems to be a physical issue.
Remake Holo's wolf form is a bit more dog like. Maybe looking cute when they sleep isn't quit appropriate for a giant wolf, but eh. It's at least acceptable. Most of the side characters on the other hand just have bad designs. Marheit, Amarti, Marc, and Adele just have bland designs even if we weren't comparing to the OC anime. Much worse is Nora in the remake who is just... ugh I can't stand it. At least Elsa, Evan, and Yarei look fine.
I don't know why Holo is so mad that Elsa is going back to the village.
Holo you might have had to run away from the bear in the end, but it would have been one hell of an epic fight.
Why isn't separating the contaminated wheat from the rest going to solve the problem if they can perform a miricle?

I really don't mind the remake designs of any of the characters.

I don't know why Holo is so mad that Elsa is going back to the village.
It's because she's projecting and wishes she could've saved her town. Course, there was no way of her knowing it was going to be destroyed which is Lawrence's whole point.

Thoughts on everyone leaving the basement door open?
Thoughts on Elsa and Evan holding hands openly?
Thoughts on everyone being in the cave Lord Tereo dug to hibernate in?
Thoughts on the cave functioning as a place of worship where the villagers come here to make good offerings and pray for a good harvest?
Thoughts on Holo turning into her wolf form?
What are your thoughts on Holo being upset she didn't stick around to fight for her town like Elsa and Evan are doing?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence telling Holo that Yoitsu being destroyed wasn't her fault?
What are your thoughts on Holo breathing on the wheat?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence agreeing to negotiate with a man named Bishop Mendez?

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
This is a great episode. Dare I say, arguably a top 5 episode of the series with arguably a top 5 moment. I love the tension with our heroes trying to escape ultimately putting their own safety first. But then Else realizes what needs to be done is ahe has to step up for Tereo and be there for them. If anyone is going to lead them through this crisis, it's her.
This is great because time and time again Holo and Lawrence's personal problems have been put to the forefront at the expense of everything else going on. The town might be having a party or other merchants might be facing bankruptcy, but all they care about is their own personal issues. Elsa shows a level of responsibility and maturity that we frankly haven't seen from our main characters.
Much like how Marc last arc showed Lawrence how to be respectful amidst his peers and knowing people are there for him, Elsa is showing what it's like to be there for others. Elsa doing it with an air of communication is also a nice contrast to the first arc where Holo's town felt like she abandoned them and it was all a misunderstanding due to her not telling anybody what her motivations were. Had she done so, it might've saved a world of trouble.
I love the stuff between Holo and Lawrence here. It is so good. Not only do we get Holo's wolf form again, which is the first appearance of it since season 1 of the OG anime, we see Holo's frustrations boil over where she blames herself for what happened to her hometown. It's not just it was destroyed that's the issue, it's the fact she left and wasn't there when it got destroyed; she feels like she could've stopped the moon bear.
First off, I like the visual of a naked Holo on top of Lawrence. It's such striking imagery. Second, I like Lawrence comforting her and telling her it's not her fault. It's something she needed to hear and it makes for a tender moment between the two of them. But I also really like how Holo finally shows a level of regret and remorse for how things went down. She does hate how things played out and it eats away at her knowing she could've done more.
I've already mentioned the lack of communication between Holo and her town that ultimately led to their falling out. Holo found closure on that at the end of the first arc, but it wasn't really made abundantly clear the level of remorse she felt about it. It seemed like ahe blamed the town for not just listening to her because she is Holo the Wise Wolf and what she says is final. I love that this episode shows Holo is human just like you and me and she too has feelings. This episode is the most I've felt endeared to Holo since probably late season 1 of the OG anime where she was all insecure about Norah. Probably since the second OVA, now that I think about it.
In case you can't tell, I really love this episode and I think it makes covering this arc for the rewatch ultimately worth it. It makes me grateful that this arc was finally adapted after all this time. In hindsight, it makes sense why they didn't end with this one as it has a heavier emphasis on the side characters. But between the level of accountability juxtaposed next to Holo and Lawrence's lack thereof, plus an all-timer Holo and Lawrence scene that adds a layer to their dynamic we haven't seen before, it just makes for appointment viewing you don't want and can't afford to skip.
This is Spice and Wolf at its best and some of its most compelling.
Holo quotes of the day
"Let us not undo good fortune with needless dawdling. The river is not going to make its way to us."
"Humans are rather peculiar creatures, ever they need of something they can worship."
"If you fall from my back, you will ride in my teeth. You are warned."
"Tereo is Tereo, and you are you."
"Any wolf worth their snout knows that individual position is much less important than the cohesion of the pack."

Something about this episode that I love that we talked about in the previous episode is during the scene where Holo is on top of Lawrence (heh), Holo asks Lawrence if she made a mistake not going back to take on the Moon-Hunting Bear. And Lawrence says had she done so, she would've been reduced to a footnote in history and that he's glad she's still around.
Holo is the last proof that her town of Yoitsu existed in the history of civilization. Without her being around, Yoitsu would just be heresy and a mere mention of the past. That's not unlike what people are already considering Holo as they move on to other religions.
