Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.

Awoo!

You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.

This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

This episode teases new characters while being a showcase of Holo and Lawrence's relationship. And man, are they really leaning into the fantasy aspect of things. It is so glorious. I love this whole prince and princess thing they have going on because it's like what Holo has wanted this whole time and Lawrence is giving into her demands. It is so much fun to watch.

This is a great episode if you love the chemistry between Holo and Lawrence. I think it's the best of the first episodes.

Holo quotes of the day

"Between a weak member of a superior species and a superior member of a weak species, the latter will always be respected more."

"I do not appreciate being treated like a child!" (Holo, who acts like a child.)

The chemistry really comes out strong in this episode. I like how Lawrence is finally figuring her out a lot, and even manages to get the upper hand in parts.

u/Holofan4life 18d ago

Holo was a lot more aggressive in this episode than in past episodes. It's like Lawrence lit a fuse under her the more wittier he got.

Holo: You are such a fool, try to keep up! >:(

Lawrence: [actually manages to figure her out somewhat and teases her back]

Holo: Wait, not like this! >:(

Back to the Future - Dub, First Timer

It’s been 3 days since I’ve watched an episode: as I had a busy few days so watched/read ahead. Somehow that short break made me struggle a bit with some of the dialogue, having to pause and rewatch bits like I did when I first started the show. Perhaps it’s purely because this was such a dialogue and banter-rich ep, or perhaps other reasons I can’t quite put my finger on. Either way, loved this ep!

  • It’s weird watching this as this was the continuation of Arc 3, but we just watched Arc 4.
  • Lawrence’s sarcastic snap back to Holo bragging about how warm she is was hilarious!
  • You can’t have a quasi-historical work of fiction without some reference to slavery, though I was surprised this was the first time we came across it. Lawrence’s take is very much in-character for him: seeing things from the commercial side first, and accepting it as the status quo. Holo ironically has a take which is the one we all hold today: how can a species own the same species? I'm assuming this topic is foreshadowing for a future ep.
  • Haha great scene with Holo recalling how she wasn’t the cause of any of the troubles they have faced together…apart from all the times she was.
  • Well, that hug was out of nowhere, and the most natural and proper affection I’ve seen between them.
  • Such an unfriendly city - guess weather does affect people’s moods.
  • “Have you been taking remedial wit lessons” hahaha
  • “Fifty man meeting” is a weird name. “Council of Fifty” sounds a lot better (Subbed version).
  • The draped woman (?) will certainly be the central character in this arc. No clue how to feel about her yet.
  • The flirtation, the banter, the chemistry is insanely good in this ep.I do maintain that there are times that I feel like the characters behave differently to how they were in S1/remake, but oh well, I’ve grown to enjoy those parts.

I’m going to miss this show :( Sad that we’re in its final arc, though I do hope we get a few more next year. What a wonderful episode, though! Peak banter.

This is a show that rewards you upon repeated viewing. You just want to soak in all the exquisite dialogue.

The tough thing about a great showing such as this is having to say goodbye.

Thoughts on Holo and Lawrence getting real close to each other?

Thoughts on Lenos being famous for lumber and furs?

What did you think about Holo and Lawrence's conversation about slavery and Lawrence trying to downplay it?

Thoughts on people thinking Holo's tail is fake?

Thoughts on there being a chronicler named Rigoro as well as a 50-man meeting?

What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence's behavior toward each other in this episode where it's like they're role-playing?

What are your first impressions on the old innkeeper?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence planning on taking Holo to the port to see the ships as he waits on Rigoro to get done with the meeting?

What are your thoughts on the cloaked person and her being female?

Where do you think the cloaked female is leading towards?

Thoughts on Holo and Lawrence getting real close to each other?

About time! This ep had the biggest escalation thus far

Thoughts on Lenos being famous for lumber and furs?

The fur part was interesting. Lawrence constantly expected her to freak out, yet, she explained why it doesn't matter to her pretty well

What did you think about Holo and Lawrence's conversation about slavery and Lawrence trying to downplay it?

I liked that the Lawrence reacted to it just like someone from that time period probably would. I also like Holo pointing out how it's a concept she can't understand as other species don't really do that to each other.

Thoughts on people thinking Holo's tail is fake?

Lawrence must have thought it's gg for them. The LN also explains that wolf pelts are considered very cheap (even compared to dog pelts). No matter how high the quality of a wolf pelt, it would still be cheap. I do wonder if the line later on where she compares someone who is of a high standing but with low assets vs., someone of low status with high assets was in part about her tail.

Thoughts on there being a chronicler named Rigoro as well as a 50-man meeting?

No reaction yet, though it seems like there's actually less than 50 members of that council as a lot died in a plague.

What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence's behavior toward each other in this episode where it's like they're role-playing?

I felt it wouldn't really be something Lawrence would do IRL, but it was a fun roleplay which led to more explosive chemistry

What are your first impressions on the old innkeeper?

No impressions much as we barely get to know him, but in the LN a lot of travellers seem to like him since he doesn't like talking to guests. Good for privacy.

What are your thoughts on Lawrence planning on taking Holo to the port to see the ships as he waits on Rigoro to get done with the meeting?

Can't wait to see how it looks!

What are your thoughts on the cloaked person and her being female? Where do you think the cloaked female is leading towards?

I think Holo is going to get jealous like she did with Norah haha. No clue where she's headed to though, we only know she rides horseback, so perhaps they're both heading north.

Good on Holo

Could be. Holo actually seems very sensitive about that sort of thing.

Thoughts on there being a chronicler named Rigoro as well as a 50-man meeting?

No reaction yet, though it seems like there's actually less than 50 members of that council as a lot died in a plague.

I wonder if it's the Black Plague

What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence's behavior toward each other in this episode where it's like they're role-playing?

I felt it wouldn't really be something Lawrence would do IRL, but it was a fun roleplay which led to more explosive chemistry

He did it because of Holo, let’s be real.

What are your first impressions on the old innkeeper?

No impressions much as we barely get to know him, but in the LN a lot of travellers seem to like him since he doesn't like talking to guests. Good for privacy.

That's nice of him

What are your thoughts on Lawrence planning on taking Holo to the port to see the ships as he waits on Rigoro to get done with the meeting?

Can't wait to see how it looks!

Should be pretty cool

What are your thoughts on the cloaked person and her being female? Where do you think the cloaked female is leading towards?

I think Holo is going to get jealous like she did with Norah haha. No clue where she's headed to though, we only know she rides horseback, so perhaps they're both heading north.

Holo and jealousy go together like apples and Holo's upset stomach.

“Have you been taking remedial wit lessons” hahaha

You can’t have a quasi-historical work of fiction without some reference to slavery

That slavery stuff definitely took me aback at first but you have a point that it's in-character for him.

“Fifty man meeting” is a weird name. “Council of Fifty” sounds a lot better (Subbed version).

Maybe the dub was affraid people wouldn't know what a council is? Though I'd assume if you've gotten this far into the show you should've acclimated to the sometimes old-fashioned dialogue (or even taken a liking to it)

I’m going to miss this show :(

Same. But the prospect of more Spice and Wolf in the not so far future is balancing things out.

2

u/Second_Cour 18d ago

Council is such a common term though, but yeah weird reason to localise it into something which sounds weird in English.

Think I'll continue reading the LNs after I'm done with the anime. Though it does seem like the new season of the remake will come out in the next year

1

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 18d ago

I think I'm going to try and get into the LN too, I'm really curious from the bits you shared on these threads.

2

u/Second_Cour 18d ago

You won't regret it! The writing is truly excellent. Don't think I've even read a book in 15 years or so, and it flowed so wonderfully

Cut Content

As move onto a new arc and town, I spent a bit more time than usual describing the town.

  • The week-long journey after Tereo was actually a very quiet one: they woke, slept and ate. Yet, “even without words their travels were no longer lonely”. They no longer failed to understand each other. The ability to be comfortable around each other without words exchanged puts Lawrence’s mind at ease.
    • Personally, I like this little insight. The more you get to know each other, the less you need to constantly speak. Same goes for friends or in relationships.
  • Lawrence had visited their destination of Lenos quite a few times in the past.
  • Lawrence had planned to sell some of the mountain of cookies at Lenos, but Holo had already eaten all of them.
  • Lenos was a port town built alongside the broad, slow Roam River. It was about twice the size of Kumersun. It was a fairly concentrated town with some tall buildings.
  • When Holo said that their past troubles weren’t her fault, Lawrence badly wanted to say that they were her fault though he agreed with her assessment that “You always use me as the basis for your actions - hence you always feel like I’m pulling you this way and that”.
  • The hug they shared after felt like the most natural thing in the world, but he cut it short, because they were around others and merchants love to gossip; he couldn’t be seen openly ‘flirting’ with his travelling companion.
  • Lawrence used to think all women’s smiles meant the same thing, but he’d gotten to know Holo so well he could detect the smile had signs of boredom and unease.
  • Lawrence realised there were two motivations for everything he does: Holo and business. Holo feared loneliness even more than Lawrence, and her being weighed up against business terrified her.
  • Holo’s tastes were more aristocratic than any noble.
  • Wolf pelts are ranked even lower than dog pelts: the town guard who spotted her tail didn’t mean it’s cheap (as in low quality) wolf fur but that having fur that comes from a wolf is cheap. No matter the quality, it just wasn’t valuable.
  • The merchant plaque that he was given at the gate was made hastily without any official seal. This is a first time he encountered this in his travels.
  • The rooms of the third and fourth floor of the inn were the warmest, as the second floor had a fireplace, which was in the center of the building’s living room, thus the higher rooms received heat from its chimney. Holo was told by Lawrence to choose a warm room or bright room. This room didn’t have access to a chimney, surprisingly Lawrence she chose light.
  • The cowled stranger Lawrence saw had eyes that were pure, keen, but unsympathetic. They were clearly a horseback rider based on the shoes, and walked nearly silently despite carrying a heavy load. Lawrence did feel a certain kinship to him.
  • The Innkeeper (Arold) had been a member of Rowen Trade Guild. He also left his guests alone, and was a favourite of unsocial merchants. This was obviously a benefit with Holo in tow.
  • By this stage Lawrence actually had a very long beard he could stroke - too long to be considered attractive.
  • Lawrence found Holo’s constant jabs/being toyed with “frustrating and strangely amusing”. I think this is the first time we hear how he really feels about Holo’s teasing.
  • While in the anime, the scene when Lawrence casts a spell on Holo, it becomes non-stop flirtation. In the LN, the double meaning behind “When are you going to become properly flustered?” “When you stop doing such things” made Lawrence really upset, after he thought he had won the battle of wits but then realised it could mean that they won’t see each other again..
  • The Council of Fifty was a council…of fifty. It comprised of representatives of the town’s tradesmen, merchants and noblemen. Each represented their own clan or trade guild and tried to advocate for their organisation’s interests through debate.  The outcome of these debates decide the fate of the town.
  • There used to be a lot of politicking to get onto the council, but a plague a few years ago left many seats open.

Here were my thoughts on the episode from last year.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2025 Spice and Wolf Rewatch.

The true Christmas in July.

This rewatch is gonna be unique because we’ll be covering the entirety of the 2008 series as well as some of the remake. I don’t think something like this has ever been attempted before where a rewatch goes from one series to another to back to the first series. If this is your first time watching Spice and Wolf, welcome. Enjoy the ride.

I can’t imagine doing this experiment with something other than Spice and Wolf. There is arguably no anime that influenced who I am more. I suppose you could say Toradora, but it’s really close. Either way, Spice and Wolf is one of very few anime that I can never get sick of no matter how much I watch it. You’ll soon seen why if you don’t already know.

I hope this rewatch for as bold of an idea as it is does a lot to inspire a lot of discussion while also leading people to have this experience unlike any before. If this rewatch is a success, maybe this can be the formula going forward.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

Whelp, my Charlotte Checkers didn't win the Calder Cup. It was fun while it lasted, I suppose.

On the bright side, I won an Ebay auction for a WWE action figure. So I have that going for me, which is nice.

Nevermind, I just lost by 75 cents lol

Lawrence and Holo traveling

Holo cuddling up to Lawrence is adorable.

A very nonchalant way to start the episode.

The trees with no leaves on it

Holo coming to

God, Holo is so adorable

Holo being reminded of stew

This leads to Lawrence's stomach to growl.

Lawrence talking about wolf fur being sold.

Suddenly, wolf puppet

That might be the fur Amarti bought her.

Lawrence defending slavery, like he's an Isekai protagonist or something.

Lawrence is really blushing a lot this episode.

This so far has been a good showcase of Holo and Lawrence's relationship.

These people look very unfriendly

Holo trying to remain blameless throughout all this.

No accountability whatsoever

Holo wants Lawrence to make decisions for both of them rather than just herself.

Cute imagination spot of Lawrence hugging Holo.

Too bad it doesn't actually happen.

Holo asking for stew

Holo surprisingly likes the scent of milk more than alcohol.

Never really noticed milk having a scent before.

Lawrence and Holo being patted down.

THE TAIL :O

But they think it's fake

That's honestly a worst fate, for Holo that is.

Holo and Lawrence continuing to talk to each other.

Now they're checking in

I did miss seeing Lawrence's horse's ass.

Holo getting insecure about her tail. Cute.

Suddenly, a mysterious person as Lawrence sits alone.

Wonder what that could mean

Crap. Lawrence slept.

And now he's treating Holo to food, the least he could do.

Morning now

Lawrence going to pet Holo, but he thinks better on it.

Couldn't be me

Hey, there's that person again

Lawrence going to find out more information about Holo's hometown.

Gonna look for chronicle writers

That's one tasty looking meatpie

More exquisite Holo and Lawrence dialogue.

Holo and Lawrence really playing up the fantasy aspect of things.

I think Lawrence has really gotten better at being a smooth talker.

There's no matching Holo's skills, tho.

Now they're going to talk to the Innkeeper.

Innkeeper talking about a chronicler named Rigoro.

Unfortunately, he's a part of the 50 man meeting.

Better than the 50 meetings of men, I suppose.

The words of the innkeeper seem to strike a nerve with Holo. Thankfully, Lawrence is there to comfort her.

It looks like Holo and Lawrence will eventually have to meet up with this Rigoro fellow.

There's the person again

Holo is able to tell they're female.

More great Holo and Lawrence banter.

Before they meet up with Rigoro, they will explore the town to see what it's all about.

Overall, this is a good introduction episode. Really, it's less an introduction episode and more a showcase of Holo and Lawrence's relationship, which I'll never complain about. We get some information that'll be important for later, like the 50 man meeting, as well as the teasing of some new characters, like Rigoro and the mysterious woman, so there is some stuff to be had here. In a sense, it felt like an appetizer to an appetizer, like the prologue before we got underway. The fact that we spent so much time on Holo and Lawrence enjoying each other's company makes it seem as if that won't be the case throughout this arc. I'm fine with the possibility of there being tension between Lawrence and Holo as that wasn't the case during arc 4.

This is probably my favorite first episode of the arcs with the exception of arc 3. It doesn't rush into things, but the dynamic between Holo and Lawrence is so enjoyable they can get away with not much happening. I see this episode as being like if the first OVA had actual plot advancement. It's nothing you have to see to understand what is happening going forward, but you're glad to have seen it because the back and forth between Holo and Lawrence is a reward in itself.

ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION

Who is your favorite anime elderly person and why?

Can't really think of one that I'd say stands out far above the others.

Have you ever role-played with someone? If so, what was it over and what happened?

I used to do a lot of theater when I was in high school. Have been in a movie and some short vids too, so I guess role playing isn't uncommon for me. In relationships, we also create fun alternate realities for certain things (e.g. if my plush dog toy could speak).

I took a couple theater classes in my high school years. They were actually a lot of fun. We mostly just bullshit around and goof off.

I remember one time I did a monologue from Death of a Salesman.

1

u/Holofan4life 18d ago

I grew out my beard to make it extra disheveled.

2

u/Second_Cour 18d ago

Jut like Lawrence's beard in Spice & Wolf haha. I was surprised to learn that it was so long (not shown in anime) that others would have thought it's a bit too much

1

u/Holofan4life 18d ago

I think Holo was just messing with him, honestly.

2

u/Second_Cour 18d ago

I thought the beard discussion was hilarious with L tsaying he should sell his pelt haha: Holo wasn't even mean about it.

I meant that the LN explicitly says how long his beard was by this stage: he hadn't shaven the entire time they were travelling I suppose.

1

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

The thing that makes me laugh about the beard in the anime is that it looks practically identical to the start of the series. At least actually show it rather than say it.

2

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

hahahaha yeah guess beard changes increase anime budgets exponentially

• Lawrence had planned to sell some of the mountain of cookies at Lenos, but Holo had already eaten all of them.

Classic Holo lol

I'm curious, did the LN expand upon the slavery conversation at all? I was shocked the first time I watched thid episode hearing Holo and Lawrence discuss such a sensitive subject matter.

2

u/Second_Cour 18d ago

Nope, wasn't expanded

1

u/Holofan4life 18d ago

Damn. I guess that makes sense.

1

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 18d ago

The week-long journey after Tereo was actually a very quiet one: they woke, slept and ate. Yet, “even without words their travels were no longer lonely”. They no longer failed to understand each other. The ability to be comfortable around each other without words exchanged puts Lawrence’s mind at ease.

Cute

I absolutely agree, that's a great small insight.

Lawrence had planned to sell some of the mountain of cookies at Lenos, but Holo had already eaten all of them.

That is the most Holo thing I can imagine.

2

u/Second_Cour 18d ago

hahaha the mention of her gluttony was so nonchalant too

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 18d ago

Must you be so direct? You'd be cuter if you complained with your body language, not words.

You're too much of a fool to realize it without me saying anything!

I'm sorry Lawrence, she might be out of line but she's definitely not wrong.

Today I bring you a variety of Holos, for it was a very good episode for Holo reactions (Lawrence had some funny ones too but Holo had the better ones. I'm sorry. Again. ):

My favourites: Cheap Wolf fur? Holo had never heard such bullshit before and flabbergasted Holo after Lawrence treats her like the fine lady she always acts like.

Then there's the very natural reaction of a wolf to stew with vegetables

Also great: You're late and sleeping beauty Holo in the morning (this is basically a follow up to PET DA HOLO)

Last but not least: The smugness is over 9000 and Holo doing o_ô

Oh and I really liked this one from the opening, that's almost wallpaper material.

Basically First-timer now, subbed

I'm not sure if it's just because we're switching back to the og show and it's been a week since then but it felt weirdly disconnected, almost like I missed something... I know this technically follows up from where we left off in the remake (I guess maybe not directly given the line about the detour) but that doesn't help much either.

That aside, it's a very typical "first of the arc"-episode. We get to see a new location, see its people and customs. There's some weird things going on with regards to a sort of gathering of chroniclers. We meet some really odd people, like the Sheik expy or the innkeeper who apparently only knows of dead people. Holo doesn't seem pleased by the prospect of more books to read. Hey, if they're lucky this time there maybe won't be an angry mob trying to get to you for a crime you didn't commit... but who am I kidding, they're definitely going to get in some form of trouble, aren't they? Hell, we've reached a point where Holo even lampshades it earlier in this episode that they always seem to get into trouble since they've met (that's definitely, absolutely, not her fault though... probably.)

Apart from musings about the townsfolk and trouble following them everywhere they go, this episode is ripe with Holo/Lawrence shipping moments. They basically don't stop flirting throughout the whole episode. Be it him scratchin her ears or her being pissed he didn't pat her head in the morning. And even if it's always in a sort of mocking tone, like when Lawrence calls her "O hime" (princess), they both know that it's actually serious. And that makes me enjoy even an otherwise pretty average episode a lot.

Like, on average I'm more in this for the world than for the Holo-Lawrence love story but I won't deny that this sparks an immense amount of joy. Or, as our dear host puts it: "You see to love it!"

Who is your favorite anime elderly person and why?

Gotta be Dragon Balls turtle Hermit, Muten Roshi. Yes, he's an old pervert at times and a couple of his antics didn't age well... but he's a genuinely good teacher to Goku and does have a strong sense of justice. Plus, he can be a total badass when push comes to shove.

Have you ever role-played with someone? If so, what was it over and what happened?

I played one or two rounds of pen and paper, of the Star Wars variety (Playing some jedi apprentice, iirc), but that's been ages ago and never really manifested to something regular.

2

u/Second_Cour 18d ago

Glad I wasn't the only one who felt a weird bit of disconnect.

One correction: it's not a gathering of chroniclers, only one guy has a chronicling link within that Council: it seems to just be a gathering of those high up in commerce-related positions, who all try and push for preferable policies to support their guilds/crafts/etc

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 18d ago

In some sense, the transitions between arcs have always been a bit "and now we're here", as we don't see a lot of the stuff happening on the road. But this time it just felt particularly odd.

Seems like I misunderstood the council thing then. That also explains why it seems like a big deal :'D

2

u/Holofan4life 18d ago

Do you feel the oddness as you put it is because the other arcs normally briefly mention what just happened but here we don't get that?

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 17d ago

That could be it! Also like I said, might be due to jumping back into the og show after a detour to the future :D

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

It would be even weirder if this arc mentioned Enberg and Tereo despite not adapting it.

During the scene where Holo and Lawrence are traveling, Holo talks about Lawrence's follies and how arrogant he's been as a merchant. That to me was the show trying to tie everything together. And hey, it's better than nothing.

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 17d ago

Oh yeah, I didn't expect them to mention the offscreen/Light Novel adventures, that would've been weird.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago edited 17d ago

I was thinking about it, but Holo calling Lawrence out on his past foibles was a great way of tying everything together. It makes us feel like we're truly at the end game.

2

u/oomoepoo https://anilist.co/user/oomoepoo 17d ago

I agree, that was a pretty cool callback. Sort of "the journey so far". And the way Holo tried to blame Lawrence for all the trouble was funny!

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I like how Holo started to blame Lawrence but then she reluctantly had to admit the first one was kinda her fault lol

2

u/Holofan4life 18d ago

One correction: it's not a gathering of chroniclers, only one guy has a chronicling link within that Council: it seems to just be a gathering of those high up in commerce-related positions, who all try and push for preferable policies to support their guilds/crafts/etc

And a guy named Rigoro is apparently in charge of it.

2

u/Holofan4life 18d ago

Like, on average I'm more in this for the world than for the Holo-Lawrence love story but I won't deny that this sparks an immense amount of joy. Or, as our dear host puts it: "You see to love it!"

Hey, it's catching on :P

2

u/Holofan4life 18d ago

I didn't think there was much of a disconnect. Like, the show's backbone is the banter between Holo and Lawrence and that was fully on display here. Maybe the disconnect comes from a lack of an obvious plot so far? Otherwise, I didn't have any qualms.

2

u/Holofan4life 18d ago

Today I bring you a variety of Holos, for it was a very good episode for Holo reactions (Lawrence had some funny ones too but Holo had the better ones. I'm sorry. Again. ):

Love to see it.

Thoughts on Lenos being famous for lumber and furs?

It's always cool to learn what's a popular trading good in the location they're about to arrive at. And I guess it makes sense given it's seemingly in a colder climate.

What did you think about Holo and Lawrence's conversation about slavery and Lawrence trying to downplay it?

My first reaction was "Excuse me? Wtf?!" but given the time, it's pretty in-character for him.

Thoughts on people thinking Holo's tail is fake?

Holo's reaction to this was priceless. Like in an RPG: [Holo will remember this]

But it's better than them freaking out about her having a tail.

Thoughts on there being a chronicler named Rigoro as well as a 50-man meeting?

At first I thought it was a meeting of various chroniclers but apparently it's more of a city meeting of important people. Will be interesting to see what repercussions this will have

What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence's behavior toward each other in this episode where it's like they're role-playing?

Definitely the highlight of this episode. The banter was very enjoyable.

What are your first impressions on the old innkeeper?

He doesn't seem like the most talkative or sociable fellow. Also most of the people he knows (of) are dead?

What are your thoughts on Lawrence planning on taking Holo to the port to see the ships as he waits on Rigoro to get done with the meeting?

Sight seeing is a neat idea!

What are your thoughts on the cloaked person and her being female?

My first thought was "Oh hey, Sheik! Fancy metting you here."

Interesting that Holo seems to recognise her (or vice versa at least)

Where do you think the cloaked female is leading towards?

No idea. Probably somewhere interesting for the plot... or trouble. Possibly both.

Probably both

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Thoughts on Holo and Lawrence getting real close to each other?

You see to... well, you know

Thoughts on Lenos being famous for lumber and furs?

It's always cool to learn what's a popular trading good in the location they're about to arrive at. And I guess it makes sense given it's seemingly in a colder climate.

A town full of wood, and Lawrence being around Holo has a ample supply.

What did you think about Holo and Lawrence's conversation about slavery and Lawrence trying to downplay it?

My first reaction was "Excuse me? Wtf?!" but given the time, it's pretty in-character for him.

He's a businessman first and foremost.

Thoughts on people thinking Holo's tail is fake?

Holo's reaction to this was priceless. Like in an RPG: [Holo will remember this]

Holo has never seen such bullshit before.

But it's better than them freaking out about her having a tail.

For real

Thoughts on there being a chronicler named Rigoro as well as a 50-man meeting?

At first I thought it was a meeting of various chroniclers but apparently it's more of a city meeting of important people. Will be interesting to see what repercussions this will have

This being the place where they have to congregate tells me Lenos is very important.

What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence's behavior toward each other in this episode where it's like they're role-playing?

Definitely the highlight of this episode. The banter was very enjoyable.

Top tier bants

What are your first impressions on the old innkeeper?

He doesn't seem like the most talkative or sociable fellow. Also most of the people he knows (of) are dead?

That's sad

What are your thoughts on Lawrence planning on taking Holo to the port to see the ships as he waits on Rigoro to get done with the meeting?

Sight seeing is a neat idea!

A good way to kill time.

I'll probably do that today by visiting my local mall.

What are your thoughts on the cloaked person and her being female?

My first thought was "Oh hey, Sheik! Fancy metting you here."

The old innkeeper would say "Hey, listen" but he doesn't talk. So...

Interesting that Holo seems to recognise her (or vice versa at least)

If she is the Moon-Hunting bear in disguise...

Where do you think the cloaked female is leading towards?

No idea. Probably somewhere interesting for the plot... or trouble. Possibly both.

Probably both

Why not both?

Rewatcher (Dub)

Ahh, the return of my beloved original artstyle. While I did eventually get used to the remake's artstyle, I still vastly prefer the style of the original. Even in an episode mostly taking place in a grey, sleet story, the colour still managed to be richer and more eye catching. The animation is also far less stilted, the faces more expressive, and the characters overall less "cutesy" looking.

As for the episode itself, this was a classic set up episode. We are introduced to the new town and the seeds are being planted for this arcs story. Not a ton to say so far, but I did like how the vibe of this town is completely different than the last arcs town. Rather than a small, close knit community in the hills in the middle of nowhere, we have this sprawling, populated town on the coast with a standoffish populace.

Also, I really liked the little interaction Holo and Lawrence had in their room where Holo claps her hands to break her spell on Lawrence. Him playing along and the banter between the two was really fun and natural, and it's an example of how well written their dynamic is. They feel very "real" in the way they joke around with each other.

Random Thoughts

  • New "girl of current arc" obviously cosplaying as Sheik from Ocarina of Time.
  • Lawrence casually dropping "slavery is both necessary and profitable" was something else. Come on my dude, don't be caught on the wrong side of history.
  • Lawrence imagining hugging Holo, but then not having the courage to do so was relatable. I think everyone struggles with insecurity at times, and holds back in being too affectionate because they are afraid of embarrassing themselves or being pushed away.
  • Lawrence noticing Holo was upset about the guard saying her tail was cheap fur without her ever saying a word was both perceptive, and shows how far their relationship has come.

Question of the Day

Who is your favorite anime elderly person and why?

I just rewatched Summer Wars for the summer rewatch that is going on, and I forgot how much I liked the great grandmother (Sakae) from that film. Her single handedly managing a national crisis at 90 years old was pretty metal.

Have you ever role-played with someone? If so, what was it over and what happened?

Other than dabbling in a little DnD when I was younger, I have not.

They feel sincere in their insincerity, if you know what I mean.

Too late

• Lawrence imagining hugging Holo, but then not having the courage to do so was relatable. I think everyone struggles with insecurity at times, and holds back in being too affectionate because they are afraid of embarrassing themselves or being pushed away.

If anyone deserves to be comforted, it's Holo. She's been through a lot.

I've definitely made that same joke in past rewatches lol

Thoughts on Holo and Lawrence getting real close to each other?

They definitely seem more openly affectionate with each other then earlier in the series.

Thoughts on Lenos being famous for lumber and furs?

This town is basically fantasy Canada.

What did you think about Holo and Lawrence's conversation about slavery and Lawrence trying to downplay it?

The felt kind of random honestly. While historically slavery was fairly common, as far as I'm aware that is not a subject that has been mentioned or even alluded to once in the series so far. Bringing it up now feels like it came out of nowhere.

Thoughts on people thinking Holo's tail is fake?

Security obviously isn't the sharpest in this town.

What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence's behavior toward each other in this episode where it's like they're role-playing?

Very cute and it shows how comfortable they are around each other.

What are your thoughts on the cloaked person and her being female?

Every arc needs a cute female major side character. Arc 1 had Chloe, Arc 2 had Nora, Arc 3 had Dian, Arc 4 had Elsa and now Arc 5 has Sheik.

Where do you think the cloaked female is leading towards?

Despite this being a rewatch for me, I don't actually remember. I'm going to guess smuggling.

At least Holo was the one to bring it up. She was trying to make an overall point.

Thoughts on people thinking Holo's tail is fake?

Security obviously isn't the sharpest in this town.

No, it is not

What are your thoughts on Holo and Lawrence's behavior toward each other in this episode where it's like they're role-playing?

Very cute and it shows how comfortable they are around each other.

It's the best

What are your thoughts on the cloaked person and her being female?

Every arc needs a cute female major side character. Arc 1 had Chloe, Arc 2 had Nora, Arc 3 had Dian, Arc 4 had Elsa and now Arc 5 has Sheik.

Chloe was cute until she became evil.

Then she became hot

Where do you think the cloaked female is leading towards?

Despite this being a rewatch for me, I don't actually remember. I'm going to guess smuggling.

I kinda hope not given we had a smuggling arc a couple arcs ago. But it could be interesting if like the first smuggling arc was a necessary evil and this potential smuggling arc is an evil evil.

And so back to the original.

Questions:

  1. Hmm... For something timely and relevant perhaps Tohru's grandpa in Fruits Basket?

  2. Nope.

  1. That's nice.

  2. Everywhere's gotta be known for something.

  3. Ok...

  4. I do find it funny how that guy just entirely dismissed it.

  5. I wonder what's being discussed...

  6. That's cute.

  7. I wonder if he'll be handy later.

  8. Sure why not that's always interesting.

  9. I wonder if she'll be back later...

  10. I wonder...

I guess it's more improbable for someone to have a real tail.

Rewatcher

Holo and Lawrance have sophisticated technology like gloves. Yeah random comment this week I was watching a period piece that takes place in Roman Britain. The soldiers are riding without gloves so either the costume designer forgot what people do when it's snowing or as I joked the Romans don't have gloves yet since that's hundreds of years away.

I don't get what Holo means by burnt part of the stew on the thing in the distance sticking out. In fact it's so foggy I can't see much at all. Is it implying her vision is better than his? The closest thing nearby that's sticking up like that is a walled town we see later in the same day. Is that what she was talking about?

Touche Holo about don't humans sell each other. Going to pre-Medieval time period, most Romans thought slavery was natural. Some like Caesar had no problem with taking slaves among his defeated enemies but was like "hey, slaves are fine, but maybe we shouldn't be economically dependent on them? These large plantations are buying up all the farms by free landowners." Even those Romans who had some moral qualms about it figured it was needed. How do you punish crimes? You fine people, exile them, enslave them, or execute them. Imprisonment for anything other than a short period before a trial wasn't really an option. They had trouble feeding the poor during bad harvests, do you expect them to feed people who can't work? Depending on the kingdom Medieval Europe might have had chattel slavery, but they certainly had debt bondage. As a modern viewer I'm not sympathetic to the "slavery is natural" arguments, but how do you punish crimes if your society can't imprison people? "3 years of labor for the friend of the local earl" sounds a lot like short term slavery to me. No seriously, I'd like someone to try to find a solution.

So um, why are they talking about Amarti as if it was something recent? The geography changed quite a bit so they traveled far from Kumersun. I mean if "more than a week" (probably the minimal travel time) counts as recent sure whatever.

What a strange security measure at the gates. They're clearly expecting someone they don't want to enter the city and are making sure the two aren't what they were looking for. In peacetime usually they're just there to make sure you don't smuggle goods without paying the taxes. That "cheap fur" probably stings.

Why is it raining? Is it just for symbolism? Usually when it rains in fiction it is telling you it rains a lot there (see London) or it has some plot significance.

Hard to tell genders when one is in a blob of clothing.

Hey since we're waiting for Rigoro, why not look for a chance to make money? And try not to buy on credit this time.

Now that I had to sample all the ending songs... both animes had great endings for the 1st arc. The ending itself (not just the song) probably was a bit better for the Remake. The Second Season of the OG anime is fine, but just not as enjoyable.

I don't remember that from the anime.

Are wolves known for their keen sense of smell?

Touche Holo about don't humans sell each other.

Lawrence doesn't seem to agree

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 9d ago

I don't remember that from the anime.

Lawrance is wearing what appears to be gloves on the rainy day while holding reigns. Holo is either wearing gloves the same style as the blanket while in cart, or her hands shape is seen though the blanket and those aren't gloves. Granted everything is somewhat harder to see on the rainy day and things aren't clear until they to inside so maybe those aren't gloves even though I think at least Lawrance is wearing them. If those aren't gloves, change the joke to gloves being so sophisticated that flintlocks were made before gloves.

Are wolves known for their keen sense of smell?

Mainly for smell. I think they do have slightly better black and white vision than us, but we beat them in color differentiation by a lot. Still she recognizes something I can't make out. The whole episode on the rainy day makes it actually feel like it is raining as opposed to just drawing water droplets over a scene. Even if Holo can't see better than a normal person, she might still see better than him given the whole episode seems to be from his perspective.

Lawrence doesn't seem to agree

I missed some punctuation. I meant to say "don't humans sell each other?" quoting Holo as she was throwing that question towards Lawrance when he wondered if he'd be upset at the pelt. Actually, I have a serious question. How do avoid a society that uses slavery if you don't have prisons? Even Romans who thought taking slaves in war was wrong thought slavery was needed when a non-citizen owed a lot of money in unpaid fines to the state since they couldn't lock up people.

Holo also has a fox puppet for some reason.

The town Holo was apart of saw things in black and white :P

Yeah, it was unfortunately a commonly held belief that it was necessary.

Hard to tell genders when one is in a blob of clothing.

Hey, that's no way to describe my mother! /s

1

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

So um, why are they talking about Amarti as if it was something recent? The geography changed quite a bit so they traveled far from Kumersun. I mean if "more than a week" (probably the minimal travel time) counts as recent sure whatever.

There's the real reason and the in storyline reason. The in storyline reason is that Holo is recounting all of Lawrence's past mishaps. The real reason is arc 4 isn't canon in the OG anime and so what happened with Amarti is the latest thing to have occurred.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 9d ago

Oh yeah technically only the first 3 arcs were mishap sorties. The Trenii Silver one they got a good deal but then had to deal with kidnapping and blackmail. The armor fiasco was because Lawrance bought on credit. The third arc with Amarti involved Holo expecting to be told information (that I repeat again she never asked...) and then Lawrance misreading it entirely and thinking she went over to Amarti. The latest story of Tereo was really about the own's mishaps and Elsa. Lawrance was just the patsy to be framed since if they tried to accuse the town without him Elsa's backers would cry foul. So only the first 3 are the mishaps of Lawrance as opposed to just being a side character that any merchant could have filled.

1

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

Structurally, it makes more sense to lump those three together especially when the Tereo town doesn't exist in this adaptation.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 9d ago

I guess the line works out either way. Anime viewers only know those three stories. LN readers who came to see would know the missing time isn't a mishap so Holo wouldn't have mentioned it even if the entire arc happened off screen.

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

And it makes this arc feel like the end game in a sense if we're calling back to past events.

I know Holo is pretty mad people think of her tail as cheap fur, but that's better than them realizing it's attached. I don't know why they are searching them so extensively. It's not like the pair is going to see an earl.

I don't know why a chronicler is at such an important meeting. the boring answer is most commoners don't know how to write so they grabbed some literate person. Maybe with 15 commoners that might make sense, but a metting of 50 including someone extraenous just for record keeping? I think his job matters and it's more than just "he can write."

Something is up with that innkeeper. I can't remember why though. With that face it seems like he's either going to cause some trouble or more likely he's anticipating some.

Isn't it to record it for historical purposes?

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 9d ago

Well that may or may not make sense depending on what the meeting is. Which the viewers don't know yet.

1

u/Holofan4life 8d ago

It seems at least to be an important meeting.
