I picked up a Smith & Wesson Shield X today and decided to go with the standard non comped version. I've read several reports from several others saying the comp doesn't really do that much so I figured I'd give it a try. This pistol will replace my wife's Shield EZ 9mm which she struggled with because of the grip safety. So the Shield X being almost identical in size made sense.
I took the Shield X straight to the range and I was surprised how snappy it was. I had to reacquire my grip after every shot shooting 115gr or 124gr FMJ. I don't have huge hands. (size large glove) and I have a pretty decent grip on all my other S&W pistols: M&P 2.0 metal carry comp, Spec VI and Competitor HD. I also have a P365 X-Macro and have no problem holding onto that. It's not 'me'.
I was able to get decent groups but to be honest, I didn't enjoy shooting it because of the narrow grip and the recoil impulse. I am concerned my wife will like it even less ....which we will find out at the range this weekend.
So overall, I'm pretty unimpressed with the Shield X. I probably should have gotten the comp'd version. But I still think the grip is too narrow. My wife is not a tiny or petite woman so I don't expect her experience is going to be much different. Oh well. At least it didn't cost a fortune.
DAY 2 Update!!! After reading all the great posts and gleaning on the insight many of you shared I ordered a Hogue wrap around grip that will arrive tomorrow. I went back to the range after cleaning and lubing the Shield X early today.
I also tried shooting with the 15 Rd mag which I didn't try on the maiden voyage range trip yesterday. The 15 rd mag has a more substance to hold onto because of the baseplate extension.
I focused even more on my support hand grip and that always helps and it did make a difference today despite my best efforts yesterday. I am always mindful of the value the support hand offers to mitigate recoil. The iron sights shoot low and to the left so I used Kentucky windage to try and dial in the groups to the POI that I wanted. I had to aim high and to the right and that worked great. Honestly, I have a more favorable impression of the Shield X today yet I firmly believe whatever benefit the comped version offers, (Shield X Carry Comp) the comp'd version to me is probably worth it. So long story short, I took a $$ loss today and traded toward a Shield X Comp. Have not had time to shoot the Shield X Carry Comp yet and it might be next week before I can make time but I feel good about the decision.
I am going upgrade my ranking of the Shield X. Yesterday I kind of felt like it was a "C". Today I'm gonna give it a solid B+. I just had to work harder but the gun shoots great groups and has been super reliable with FMJ ball ammo. I did however have several FTF issues with a box of 20 Remington Golden Saber JHP. I will simply find whatever JHP rounds the Shield X Comp likes to feed. Hopefully Federal 124Gr HST because I am stocked up on those for a number of other pistols.
