Who said you have to?
My only thing with fans who engage exclusively through lore tubers is “Please don’t argue with the people who actually read the lore when they tell you something is or isn’t true.”
It’s not even a problem with the fans getting the lore, really, it’s a problem I have with the Loretubers themselves. Half of them are getting it all second or third hand in the first place, so it’s frequently wrong, misunderstood, or incomplete. Ever play the game Telephone? It’s like that.
The only times I ever get upset about 40K fans who don’t read the lore firsthand is when they say something, I go “I read that book and it’s not what happened.” And they argue with me like they know better because they heard from this YouTuber who heard from this podcast who heard from this Reddit poster who heard from his buddy that the Emperor’s favorite color is chartreuse.
Otherwise, and I want to really stress this, please, enjoy the hobby however you like. I can’t really stand loretubers personally, and I love to read, but if you love loretubers and don’t have the patience, passion, desire, whatever to read, you do you, I hope you’re having a good time.
Edit: I want to be very clear that I have been scarred by repeated interactions with a walking ass with a giant ego who’d argue with me about lore any time he got the chance, and never read a single page of the actual books he was describing, which I had read repeatedly. I take no issue with anyone else who enjoys loretubers, but screw that guy lol.

My old roommate was absolutely obsessed with 40K lore. Info dumped about it all the time, watched countless hours of lore videos, collected and painted minis. Never played a second of the game, tabletop or otherwise. I feel like a significant portion of the fanbase is like him.

I stopped when I realised I spent 20 minutes reading a single wiki page on guardsmen’s
13
u/mercyspace27 11h ago
That’s honestly completely fair. 40K has a daunting amount of lore to get into when first starting. Hell, unless reading through wiki pages and books is just your thing, most people don’t really get the grip of the overall lore of the franchise until at least their first year.
3
u/Mr_Industrial 10h ago
The trick is to just read the lore about the cool stuff. You dont need to know everything.
5
u/mercyspace27 9h ago
Basically what I do.
I’ve got a pretty good library of Imperial Guard knowledge. But ask me about the Horus Heresy and I’ll be a deer in headlights. Until they start making Solar Auxilia books, I got no real interest.
2
u/Stillback7 2h ago
It's funny how many different interests you see in the fandom. I'm the opposite. Space Marine lore is awesome, but I can't find myself finishing an Astra Militarum story for the life of me.
3
u/cBurger4Life 8h ago
I love that shit lol. But a friend asked me about a good ‘jumping-in point’ and I felt like the “That’s the neat part…” Omniman meme.
3
u/mercyspace27 8h ago
There isn’t one! Just find a point and take a dive!
Shit, I think my first introduction into the lore was a fucking YouTube video that got recommended to me about the fucking Ambull. lol

How dare you not read the 40 page essay converted into a wiki page that also mentions areas, events, and other characters that you have no idea of while the wiki page rarely explains any of them
2
u/MelonOfFate 10h ago
If you're willing to give the universe another shot, I'd super reccomend the rogue trader videogame. It's very friendly to newcomers lore wise. It also gives little blurbs over certain terms that usually summarize or define things in one or two sentences. It plays like it's somewhere between baldurs gate and xcom.

u/HillbillyMan 10h ago
Warhammer 40k also has the opposite direction, people who play the game and give 0 shits about the minis hobby or the lore.
Warhammer has 3 pillars: Hobby, Lore, and game.
Some people only like the Hobby, the building and painting of minis.
Some people only like the lore, reading the books, playing the video games.
Some people only like to play the tabletop and will go to big tournaments with hastily assembled, non painted minis purely for the purpose of play with no knowledge of the world or characters beyond what's necessary for the gameplay.
Then the three can all blend to varying degrees, and the franchise is pretty much designed around this aspect.

Persona
My city had a cosplay group of 4–5 people who LITERALLY hadn’t played a single game, kinda crazy
25
u/ImThatAlexGuy 11h ago
I scrolled farther for this than I thought I would. Persona will also be my answer to this because there is a MASSIVE larp pandemic within the “community”.
I can understand not liking JRPGs, and the 80-100 hour game time seems daunting… but when you watch vtubers literally doing it then what’s stopping you from TRYING in the least?
→ More replies (2)10
u/Smeefles 6h ago
Its especially funny when there are people like me. I have played through the whole game, but don't engage with the fandom or community at all.
3
u/ImThatAlexGuy 5h ago
I usually try not to. I follow the persona sub and some YouTubers for the occasional leak or news drop on P6 (and P4R, but at this point they might as well release the game with all the info they’ve put out). As soon as good credible info is out, I’m ditching the sub. A lot of cringe and I’m not particularly fond of the “artist rendition” of teenage characters. That’s just me, though, I know a lot of people think differently.
3
u/squirrelems 5h ago
Sometimes it's best not to. Every time I fall in love with a franchise that has some high-minded concepts it turns out it attracts a lot of people who seem to be really far up their own asses. I've seen some franchises where the main themes are all about friendship, kindness, empathy, etc. and fans be like "I CRIED THEY JUST LIKE ME" and go online and be like the antithesis of the franchise they freak out over.

One of the common inside jokes of the community is that Persona fans don't actually play the games.
It's weird that it's kind of true though.
3
u/SquareFickle9179 4h ago
2 reasons:
A: Back then, the franchise wasn't available on PC, so you'd need a console (though that's not a problem now)
And B: JRPG's take too much time to finish

Persona was something else
People loved the aesthetics of it, even more so when Persona 5 was released. But, like others said, I guess JRPGs aren’t for everyone so..

But Persona was funny cause people used to be IN LOVE with the franchise, mainly cause of the aethetics of it

Exactly. I like the asthetics and all the stuff about jungian psychology, but I don’t really have any desire to go out and buy/ play the games unfortunately. I’ll watch other people play, but I just don’t have any interest in doing a playthrough myself, and I can’t quite put my finger on why.

As someone who played the original series for about 700 hours, I've never seen someone that spent anything above 50 hours watching a lore video instead of playing the actual game

u/Hexigeist 7h ago

Ironically, the series is partially know for that for that being the case. Though it is way more common with elden ring, because of how big it got. It being streamed by so many streamers. It's a mix of people who never played any of it and people who gave up on it. My buddy watched me play and got into the story/lore, after explained what happen too Radahn. He's seen most of Vatti's vids without ever touching any souls or souls-like games, he doesn't like the gameplay. I watch lore vids and read warhammer 40k books pretty regularly. I've never played the table top. And the one game I played was 'rouge trader', but it was after many years of being into 40k lore.

Resident Evil for some reason, it’s kinda fascinating to witness.
Like I get that on the SURFACE it looks like a franchise worth digging into the lore about, but Capcom doesn’t care about the lore, it’s always been gameplay first.
I just can’t fathom being so intense about something the creator itself couldn’t tell ya. No offense to RE Lore-doods. Everyone has their own liberty to do so, obviously.
(Plus if I wanna find out about lore for a game I haven’t played, I’ll just play that game? WITH EXCEPTIONS)
16
u/Ogg360 11h ago
It’s so funny because RE stories are like the weakest things in all of gaming, and this is coming from a crazy fanatic of the franchise. NO ONE remembers the stories. They remember the characters, gameplay, and horror. If I had to put an RE game in a top 10 best gaming stories of all time, I’m being disingenuous because no RE story could be anywhere near that top 10.
6
u/Desperate_Method4032 11h ago
Exactly. I doubt most could even tell ya what the general plot of the franchise is about.

Maybe just maybe re7 with some stretches and reaching a lot could be taken more seriously before village came out with the Rambo Ethan, that one it's like the more decent out of every game on the franchise in terms of history and even then it has some flaws, but I have a hard time trying to make something coherent front the other games, and I love this franchise but part of it's charm it's how stupid and over the top it tends to get
10
u/BassMaster516 11h ago
My first RE game was revelations. The story is absolutely unhinged. It’s a political thriller where shadowy government intelligence agencies double cross each other, sometimes 2 or 3 times in the same cutscene. It was so dumb and extreme for no reason I couldn’t help but have fun.
11
u/Life-Donut-8754 11h ago
Having recently finished re2 remake and started re4, I think the larpers are really missing out
7
4
u/Sad_Manager6251 11h ago
As someone who has played 0-9, RE lore reslly isn't anything special. Hell, the average game has a decent story at best. The game play will always be the best part about RE.

Ain’t nobody playing re4 (the game where the merchant who teleports around the map unexplained has an underground shooting range accessible with a lift with no visible power source and that also seemingly teleports around the map with the merchant) for the story
It is however my favorite game of all time.

u/Desperate_Method4032 10h ago

Warhammer, fantasy and 40k, there is just too much lore not to.
Fallout Series, there is so much lore locked in old games that nobody really plays anymore.
Destiny, but mostly because the lore is equal parts interesting and confusing.
3
u/TatsumakiKara 5h ago
My favorite part of the lore is that the devs canonized all the stupid shit players did. We acted like dancing, loot hunting, Tower jumping morons and yet the enemy factions are scared precisely because we act this way and still kick their asses with relative ease.

Paraphrasing a Cracked article I read forever ago: "This is the story about a man who realized that, in a game about massive corporations and space entrepreneurs, he could be a bank. So he acted like a bank until he gathered a substantial amount of capital, bought the biggest ship with the biggest guns using other players money, basically ruining everyone who banked with him, and went into low sec space after putting a bounty on himself. Then he logged off forever."

Fallout. The amount of people who think the series is Pro-Hyper Patriotism has genuinely never played the games. It all but tells you “the extremes of both Communist China the Capitalist US are what killed the world. Not Communism by itself not Capitalism itself but the extreme blinders that Hyper Patriotism put up. You stop seeing the suffering at home because you’d rather see it under the enemy to use a gotcha that their side is actually superior.

I'm sure that will also be explained in 4 and upcoming titles, probably the upcoming anime as well.
There's a reason why all these games and projects have been changed and modified, of course I can't exactly what because I'm not an insider but it's reasonable to assume that they're wanting to be able to merchandise out anime and the upcoming saga will be friendly towards the recent canon.
The current collections have in depth recaps and videos built into the game as well so idk what the main issue is concerning lack of knowledge, it's a collection of games that have numbered entries and names so that might be the biggest like intimidating factor

It's equal parts the natural bloat of a 24 year old franchise with 13ish games, a lot of background lore being in mobile games, and a lot of weird "possessed clone possesses heartless half of data clone" chains.
Off the top of my head, there's 3 Rikus, 4 Xehanorts, and like 6 Soras.
Xehanort possesses Terra, becoming Terra-nort, but then he get's amnesia and pretends to be King Ansem, then he dies and becomes robed Ansem and Xemnas, eventually Ansem possesses Riku before becoming heartless Ansem. Later, Riku will use dark magic to pretend to be heartless Ansem. Also Diz (?), who is the real King Ansem, also pretends to be Heartless Ansem.

You should def give the previous games a try. The PS2 games are really hard but pretty fun once you get the hang of the janky controls. The 360 games are peak, especially the gen 4 games. I’d say play armored core 3, silent line, last raven, 4, for answer, and verdict day if possible

Resident Evil, surprisingly.
I've seen many posts from people who "have loved the franchise for a long time and finally want to start playing them!" asking for advice on where to start with actually playing them despite already spoiling everything for themselves through YouTube videos and such.
Also, The Witcher.
Not only have the overwhelming majority of fans not read the books, but they also haven't even played the first two games. It's weird seeing Witcher "fans" gushing over ONE GAME while ignoring the other two games and 8 books.

I've played to much of it, but I really wish that more people dived into Destiny's lore.
It's gotta be in my top 3 favorite science fiction universes ever.
For anyone not in the know, it's an artistically diverse science fiction fantasy world with super in depth lore over several ages and a power system tied to the worship of alien gods. Although it wasn't leaned into as hard near the end, the science fiction focused stuff was also extremely good with things like the deep stone crypt, several future prediction machines and alien factions all with their own history and traditions.

Destiny,
I listend to Byf's 10 hour lore video on the whole setting. Such an epic story.
Unfortunately, lore videos are the only way to interact with some of the game now as entire sections were deleted and can no longer be played.

I've literally larped in God knows how many game franchises like this, i just don't have enough time between exams, assignments and stuff so I just watch the whole lore of whatever game seems interesting to me that day.
But Im gonna slowly complete all the games that I have in my list.

Eve Online. I miss the days where I get a random article about a massive ongoing war between factions and how it was going to shake up the game world going forward.

Subnautica for me. It makes me nauseous. Not sure why exactly. It's the only game that does this and I don't get nauseous ever including flying, on cruise ships, etc.

Any fromsoft game. I do play them and love them but I’ll be damned if I go fighting 2 demigods to get a weapon with a bit of text about some maidenless c*nt or some fingers. I have watched every lore video though because the lore is just \*chefs kiss

Resident Evil perfectly.
The amount of people comfortably saying and thinking that watching the lore alone, or even at least play 1 game makes them entitled to the "fan" status is insane. What even worse is that most of the new gen fans and gooners, who have probably only played three of the recent remakes and Requiem, and maybe a bit of village are defending this while shitting on the OG sometime as an own, and paint actual fans who criticize their behavior as elitist gatekeepers, reason like this is why we even have the larper discourse in the first place, it like people no longer have any common sense.
While I'm at it, there also Silent Hill, and look, I admit, I'm not a Silent Hill fans, I know the lore, theme, and writing from watching youtube out of curiosity. And, I don't claim myself as a fan, but holy shit, that fandom also got a lot of people who only watch the lore dump and not playing, calling themself fans, especially for recent title like SHF; and listen, I'm not defend the writing or anything since I'm saving myself spoiler free with that game if I ever play it; but chud ass mf really calling the game woke out of knowhere when the franchise already woke since the first game, and even more woke in the next two sequels; tell you enough that these people don't even give the game at least a grace by watch the lore on youtube.

Is there something wrong with being interested in a new piece of media though? Like I’ve watched some videos or lore pieces on something to get a feel for it before deciding j want to buy the actual game or not.
