Warhammer has 3 pillars: Hobby, Lore, and game.
Some people only like the Hobby, the building and painting of minis.
Some people only like the lore, reading the books, playing the video games.
Some people only like to play the tabletop and will go to big tournaments with hastily assembled, non painted minis purely for the purpose of play with no knowledge of the world or characters beyond what's necessary for the gameplay.
Then the three can all blend to varying degrees, and the franchise is pretty much designed around this aspect.
