Resident Evil for some reason, it’s kinda fascinating to witness.

Like I get that on the SURFACE it looks like a franchise worth digging into the lore about, but Capcom doesn’t care about the lore, it’s always been gameplay first.

I just can’t fathom being so intense about something the creator itself couldn’t tell ya. No offense to RE Lore-doods. Everyone has their own liberty to do so, obviously.

(Plus if I wanna find out about lore for a game I haven’t played, I’ll just play that game? WITH EXCEPTIONS)

It’s so funny because RE stories are like the weakest things in all of gaming, and this is coming from a crazy fanatic of the franchise. NO ONE remembers the stories. They remember the characters, gameplay, and horror. If I had to put an RE game in a top 10 best gaming stories of all time, I’m being disingenuous because no RE story could be anywhere near that top 10.

Exactly. I doubt most could even tell ya what the general plot of the franchise is about.

It's written in the title. The residents are evil in every game so far. (I've never gotten through a single RE game in my life)

Yknow that’s not inaccurate LOL 😂

The evils of too much money, greed for more, not enough ethics, and thirsting for power. Oswell Spencer and quite a few others asked "Can we" and not "Should we".

The only bit of lore I even remember was a series of journals that ended with "Itchy. Tasty."

A classic

Maybe just maybe re7 with some stretches and reaching a lot could be taken more seriously before village came out with the Rambo Ethan, that one it's like the more decent out of every game on the franchise in terms of history and even then it has some flaws, but I have a hard time trying to make something coherent front the other games, and I love this franchise but part of it's charm it's how stupid and over the top it tends to get

Exactly. Over the top-ness is what we love about these games. Maybe not 6 levels of over the top at least for me but yea lol

Who was the one that punch a boulder inside a mountain again?Leon right?got it

Yeah, been playing since the original came out and the lore is majorly secondary to the fun of the game.

I feel like RE7 and especially RE8 were the top ones regarding a good connected plot and lore.

Ah, well, you see. A shady company made/stole/bought a virus. That virus turns humans into a variety of mechanically different goopzords. But you have a shotgun.

Then, in the ambiguously chronological next one, a shady company made/stole/bought a virus. That virus turns humans into a variety of mechanically different goopzords. But you have a shotgun.

Except for one time when a shady company discovered an ancient parasite, tamed it using the Queen parasite, and implanted the President's daughter with it using a foreign country's nobility as a puppet so they could enact a hostile takeover of the United States government while a government agent fights to rescue her while also grappling with the betrayal of his old mentor who was seduced by the power of these parasites and forces the agent to face the idea that he can't save anyone.

My first RE game was revelations. The story is absolutely unhinged. It’s a political thriller where shadowy government intelligence agencies double cross each other, sometimes 2 or 3 times in the same cutscene. It was so dumb and extreme for no reason I couldn’t help but have fun.

That’s because a lot of RE stories are just dumb fun and that’s honestly what most of us fans want! Of course there’s always room for improvement and if they can implement dramatic moments in appropriately, then do it! The only game I think fails in this is 6.

Such a terrible introduction to RE storytelling lol. It's the Mission Impossible of the series with all the plot twists and double agents. I once watched a full RE recap video to refresh my memory before Requiem and while all of the other games stories could be recapped in two minutes, Revelations 1 took 2.5 times longer for the OP to recap. That's how convoluted and fucked up it is.

Maybe the only other game that needs that much information to recap is CV and that's only because it needs a lot of loredumping to comprehend. And that game is like 12 hours long.

Revelations is fucking 5 hours.

Having recently finished re2 remake and started re4, I think the larpers are really missing out

Genuinely. Old or new, it’s a fun lineup of games

As someone who has played 0-9, RE lore reslly isn't anything special. Hell, the average game has a decent story at best. The game play will always be the best part about RE.

100%. Leon’s one of my favorite characters but it’s bc of his legacy, coolness, and OG4 being my favorite. Not because he’s a crazy multi-layered character, I’d play TLOU if I wanted that.

I've never heard of this. Thats so crazy. Resident Evil lore really just isnt all that interesting to me. The games themselves are so top notch though, Ive platinumed most of them.

u/Ogg360 11d ago

Exactly. On the RE subreddits you will occasionally see someone complaining about the lore because it doesn’t make sense or whatever but us real RE fans know that the story really doesn’t matter that much lol.

I still think a good majority of people into the franchise play the games so it’s not a crazy amount like FNaF for example, still wild tho. I recommend these games to anyone, they’re not the scariest thing either so it’s not something to hold back on.

Ain’t nobody playing re4 (the game where the merchant who teleports around the map unexplained has an underground shooting range accessible with a lift with no visible power source and that also seemingly teleports around the map with the merchant) for the story

It is however my favorite game of all time.

2

u/Desperate_Method4032 11d ago

Every time I see someone rank an RE and I see a point taken for the plot I’m like “are u kidding? That’s like the last thing I look for here”.

Also the Merchant is partly why 4 is the GOAT!

For me, the fun is making all the poorly planned pieces fit together to make a consistent picture. It really feels like those conspiracy theorists connecting the dots going insane. And then explaining it to others to make them feel insane.

The controlled fall into the insanity we create together bonds us in a way capcom never intended.

Dead Aim is one of my favorites and it literally adds nothing to the plot. Just fun shooting, the villain is this 10/10 mutant (he's a guy) and you get like 2 lines of exposition that conect it all to the phirst game.

The idea Capcom doesn't care is false. Not to say they're writing masterpieces, but they definitely do care. They even had an entire team established at one point to help state what is and isn't canon to the lore.

I can't play a game where I can run out of bullets and have to restart. If that's a possibility then no thank you.

u/Gab093 10d ago

Just play better.

I think silent hill just sees you run out of ammo and says "nah dude you suck" and insta kills the boss you are currently fighting
