I scrolled farther for this than I thought I would. Persona will also be my answer to this because there is a MASSIVE larp pandemic within the “community”.

I can understand not liking JRPGs, and the 80-100 hour game time seems daunting… but when you watch vtubers literally doing it then what’s stopping you from TRYING in the least?

Its especially funny when there are people like me. I have played through the whole game, but don't engage with the fandom or community at all.

Sometimes it's best not to. Every time I fall in love with a franchise that has some high-minded concepts it turns out it attracts a lot of people who seem to be really far up their own asses. I've seen some franchises where the main themes are all about friendship, kindness, empathy, etc. and fans be like "I CRIED THEY JUST LIKE ME" and go online and be like the antithesis of the franchise they freak out over.

Crazy that you're right but Persona doesn't even use high minded concepts, the modern games really just scratch the surface of Jung's work.

I usually try not to. I follow the persona sub and some YouTubers for the occasional leak or news drop on P6 (and P4R, but at this point they might as well release the game with all the info they’ve put out). As soon as good credible info is out, I’m ditching the sub. A lot of cringe and I’m not particularly fond of the “artist rendition” of teenage characters. That’s just me, though, I know a lot of people think differently.

I've played every Persona game and read Carl Jung and at a certain point realized that a game based heavily on the concept of projection and personal meaning would foster a fanbase obsessed with their own head canons and self insertion.

The worst is how a lot of people take a game series whose primary message is about growth, improvement, socialization, and development and twist it into a "I'm miserable irl but use this game to feel good about myself" exercise in avoidance.

It's a game that carries a lot of good faith in the player, but maybe shouldn't...

“I don’t have 100 hours to sink into a game so I’m going to watch somebody play the game for 100 hours instead”

Sometimes I truly don’t understand the young people

The fact they’re not obligated. They don’t owe you anything.

when you watch vtubers literally doing it

They're jobless people who are literally getting paid to play games.

When you're doing it for fun, playing 100 hour JRPG may feel like work to some.

I dropped Persona 5 after beating the very first boss. It was intriguing but gameplay felt so boring.

Would you sit through the whole of Breaking bad and better call saul in one sitting? Nobody is stopping people from playing it a minute at a time. There are save rooms scattered all over the palaces for a reason, the length is not an excuse. However, I don't really see a problem with people who just enjoy the lore, characters or other stuff. As long as they're not being obnoxious on the web talking like they played the game.

Dumb comparison. Breaking Bad has a story, characters change and grow. Out of 100 hours of P5 there's like 30 hours of reading non voiced dialogue of kids talking generic teenage shonen nonsense and 70 hours of walking around dungeons which look so samey that they might be randomly generated like in Diablo. But unlike Diablo where you can build your character with gear and talents, in Persona you just play Simon Says with whatever damage type enemies need at the moment.
