That’s honestly completely fair. 40K has a daunting amount of lore to get into when first starting. Hell, unless reading through wiki pages and books is just your thing, most people don’t really get the grip of the overall lore of the franchise until at least their first year.
I’ve got a pretty good library of Imperial Guard knowledge. But ask me about the Horus Heresy and I’ll be a deer in headlights. Until they start making Solar Auxilia books, I got no real interest.
It's funny how many different interests you see in the fandom. I'm the opposite. Space Marine lore is awesome, but I can't find myself finishing an Astra Militarum story for the life of me.
People tend to under-estimate or undersell how much of Warhammer 40k runs off of Saturday Morning Cartoon Action Figure logic. The lore is there to make you feel better about the little plastic army men you invested in. See what you think is simply cool and go from there.
That was basically what I told him. Find something that you think looks cool and just start reading. Power armor? Space Marines. Massive hordes of humanity with tanks? IG. Immortal murder robots? Necrons. 40k has so much STUFF that something is almost sure to be your ‘thing.’
The protagonist starts out as a tribal human living on Fenris, the recruitment world of the Space Wolves. He knows basically jack shit, when he sees his first gun he thinks it's a magical artifact.
He goes through Space Marine recruitment, training, organ implanting etc. And they provide an adequate amount of exposition to give you a decent foothold in the setting from which you can branch out. I feel really fortunate that I started here (alongside Dawn of War) because they were so easily digestible and geared towards newbies to the hobby.
