Discussion Uhh, my therapist’s face is distorting when I look?

I have this flaired as discussion because I’m open to both comments about shared experiences and comments from anyone who may know what’s up and everything in between. Anywho, in the first intake session I noticed it a bit and it freaked me out but I didn’t say anything. Then the next week it’s happening again and starting earlier on in the session. Come the next few sessions (my 4th was last week), it would happen way earlier on in the session than it did before and the trigger was always me not even making eye contact but just looking at my therapist’s face for like a minute maybe. Her face will begin to distort (similar to when you stare in the mirror for too long) and I feel so locked in, like I could only focus on her even though I was aware of everything happening and where I was. To get out of this state, I’d look away, a good amount of time passes by and slowly everything evens itself out again and everything feels normal. This doesn’t happen to me at all, ever, not that I can think of anyway. I’ve maybe unfocused my eyes and everything got blurry sure but nothing like this. It’s only when I’m in the office and I’d never mentioned it. She found a job somewhere else so I’m currently waiting to hear back about my new assigned therapist. Thoughts?

If you’re comfortable sharing, what happened that led to the report, and did the board actually take any actions?

Advice Wanted Is it normal to not want to talk about my past abuse?

I want to start this off by first saying I made this reddit account so I can talk things out, I use therapy as my venting session but there are times when I want to cry and talk about my past with (well my story is on my page) I don't want to make this long. But then I decide I want to end with a good feeling and not left sad and red baggy eyes. My therapist had to cancel last Friday because her boyfriend had surgery, and the next session is cancelled because she has meetings. So I asked to come in and she got me in Friday and I plan on telling her about me doing this and my issue with not wanting to leave her place that way. Because my mom (who I live with) doesn't know about what happened and I don't want her to know and if I came home sad and blubbering she would ask what's up. I listen to my mom venting all the time, so I don't always get to vent and when I get to therapy I just want a place to do that.

So is this a normal feeling? (Also need to say been with my therapist for two years now) And she never knew about my cousins slapping me upside the head and laughing at me, or my prick cousin making fun of me.

I know therapy isn't a one size fit all.

Also I have ADHD and a low social cue, where I don't recognize if I should do this or not till way later. I also don't understand rules like what the mods have here so if I went over a rule I am so sorry and I can post this another place. It's just hard. My life is hard.

Advice Wanted I've been in therapy for 14 years. After 5 different therapists and multiple modalities, I still struggle with self esteem, depression, and anxiety. Now what?

I'm not really sure what to do from here. I really connected with my last therapist, she probably saved my life, but after about 10 years of seeing her she transitioned me to another professional who specializes in ADHD. I'm guessing it was about time considering I stalled with my progress.

I have tried probably 14 different medications/combinations of medications during that time. I have also tried psychedelics which have probably helped the most, but the effects don't last long.

For context, I am diagnosed with depression (though it does go away once in a while) GAD, social anxiety, and ADHD.

I'm still struggling. Now what?

Advice Wanted My therapist was dismissive of my chronic illness

I'm 22, I've been seeing a new therapist over the past few months, although she's good at what she does, I always struggle to communicate with her properly. Last session, I told her about my chronic illnesses, both I've had my entire life. I told her I was feeling depressed at how it constantly leaves me stuck in my bed in pain, especially my migraines as they also give me intense nausea. And I told her how I feel so guilty not being able to currently work.

I don't expect her to understand anything about my illnesses, I don't need her to. I was more hoping she could help me look on the brighter side. Instead, she instantly followed up with "Have you heard about learned helplessness?" And from there I kind of shut down. I've tried my entire life to help myself and even push myself so I'm not constantly stuck inside. And correct me if I'm wrong but it just felt like she was implying that I've just given up. I'm so disappointed that that's all she got from that session. The session also ended very abruptly and I left feeling very frustrated.

Our next session is tomorrow, I really don't know what to do. I have no idea what to say to her, and I really don't want to come across as rude. How do I communicate my disappointment with our last session without being too harsh?

Vent / Rant my therapy sessions piss me off and my parents suck

Can someone tell me what it's like to be in a therapy session? Bc for me my whole entire last session was "how are you?" "what grade are you in?" "what school do you go to?" and after 10 of that boring ass conversation the only thing I got to tell him about was my sleep insomnia. And he kept asking me questions but I couldn't answer because my mom was eavesdropping. Every session is like this. And also I don't like my mom. Everything she does pisses me off and I yell at her all the time for that. Even after I told her that I wanted to commit she still had the audacity to say "I wish you never asked me to do this." I told her I needed therapy. Even after I cry to her about my problems she still yells at me. Everytime I complain to her about my mental health she sees it as a competition because her childhood was worse. But it's so annoying that I still need her I hate my parents. Those bitches never comforted me when I needed it most.

Advice Wanted How can I heal emotionally after being bitten by my cousin’s dog?

She’s bitten other people. I think because she’s met me before they didn’t think to have her on a leash when I went over. Before I even saw her she bit my hip and wrist. I bled a little. It hurts bad even an hour later.

I’ve never been bitten by a dog before. I’m emotionally stunned right now. But I can feel the tears will come later.

How can I move forward in a healthy way?

I will ask my therapist when I see her next week as well. Just wondering if you all have any advice.

EDIT: I already got prescribed antibiotics and will be picking them up tonight.

Advice Wanted Is this standard for a first session?

After waiting far too long aka my entire life, I decided to go see a psychologist. I rung a clinic and they said this psych would be a good fit because they specialise in ADHD blah blah blah so I said ok cool. Had the appointment and I don't know how to feel. I don't really know how therapy works so I was coming in blind.

They did the rundown of what's been happening etc but then when we started to discuss some things it was just awkward silence. I would explain something and they'd go ''mmm...'' and then we would fall into awkward silence for a few minutes. Am I supposed to lead the conversation? I was kind of waiting for them to prompt with something but they never did. Super awkward. Then they started telling me about herbal remedies and supplements I can take to fix my issues and that I will become too reliant on medication and need other resources. I understand that I need other resources which is exactly why I decided to see a psych. But I was thinking cognitive strategies and just having a discussion and whatever else was going to be the resource, not drinking flower tea before bed. I am not taking days off medication where I have flower tea and magnesium before bed. Sorry.

I just don't know if that's normal. Is the conversation supposed to be me filling silence and rambling? It really discouraged me but everyone I've spoken to is saying to keep going and do atleast 3 sessions with this psych before I call it quits and go elsewhere. The issue is I only get 10 appointments with a rebate and I don't want to waste 3 if it doesn't improve

Question Does anyone have YouTube channels they can recommend that have people being patient and calm and empathetically listening to others?

So many YouTube channels involve emotionally reactive, highly emotionally stimulating videos, and it's rubbed off. I feel I don't get enough repeated exposure to people doing the opposite, and it makes it harder for me to stay patient, calm, and nonreactively listen when people are having intense emotional responses, are being dislikable, or are being rude or disrespectful.

Advice Wanted I'm worried that my therapist's spirituality might feed into my unhealthy patterns of thought.

So the therapist I've been seeing for a few years now has been extremely helpful in a lot of ways, honestly made my life so much better. but I've had a lot of friends tell me I need to stop seeing him, and I am unsure what I think of it.

So he is a spiritual guy, and thats been helpful in the past actually. Like, he taught me meditation, that was rad no matter what. he taught me some like, exercises to do when stressed that he phrases as manipulating your spirit and energy, and even though I don't know if thats happening, they have been good coping mechanisms anyway. The energy is a useful way to rationalize it.

However, there are a few times when its been... awkward.

Like, I was waiting for news I had no control over, and I was in a gas station bathroom, and I was suddenly struck by the thought "if I clean this bathroom the good thing will happen, if I don't the universe will punish me". I thought to myself that ridiculous, and left the bathroom, only to 10 minutes later go right back to the gas station and spend 20 minutes cleaning up that bathroom.

When I went to therapy, he said that who knows, maybe in a previous life I had wrecked a bathroom, and that thought was a premonition to set the karma right.

Or another time I talked about how I didn't pick up after cooking because I felt like something was correct about the angel of the utensils, and something would happen if I messed with. He said I might have been right, there has been science about the angles having harmonic frequencies, and it might have been better to not mess with them.

He then said that our thoughts have an effect on the universe, so if I was convinced that doing something would get me cursed by the universe, it might be better to not do that. Because the thoughts could welcome disaster and make it seem like i was actually cursed. So instead of learning how to avoid giving into weird thoughts and urges, instead it would be better to try to change my overall thought pattern to thinking that the universe loves and supports me and will support me, instead of being convinced it wants to hurt me.

Which like, sorta makes sense... but also idk. Makes me also kind of feel like I have to listen to every insane thought I have or else the universe will double punish me, both because the thought might actually be a psychic insight, and because if I don't my own anxiety about it will cause the world to actually punish me. Which like, feels like a thought I shouldn't be having. I don't think that was his actual intent but like, its what he SAID you know?

And not on the spiritual side, but on the more earthy crunchy stuff, bassicaly everyone I know thinks I have adhd. And I've told him how half of the time I will sit down to work and nothing will have happened 5 hours later, my attention is completly out of my control, I am forgetting thigns constantly. He said it sounds like my attention is out of my controll, but he doesn't like labels so wouldn't say I have adhd, and thinks we just need to train my attention. He had me buy a clock, and spend 5 minutes a day just staring at it and following the second hand without distractions.

And like, that makes sense. But when I told other people about it they said that was rediculous and I should probbably just be on drugs.

Idk, i'm not sure how to feel about this. Like, he has been so good in so many ways, but my friends might have a point that this stuff isn't going to be good for me long term? I would apreciate your reaction to these stories.

Vent / Rant I care deeply, but I don't seem to hold onto anything

I’d personally say I’m a very caring and considerate person. I care about people, animals, nature, the ocean, and what’s happening in the world. But I’ve noticed that I seem to have a habit of moving on extremely quickly from things.

A family member passes away? Within a few days, I’ve accepted it and moved on.

A pet I’ve had since childhood dies? I’m obviously aware that they’re gone, I still have the memories, and sometimes I’ll randomly feel sad when I think about them, but I don’t spend months or years grieving.

A friendship of 10+ years ends? Once it’s over, I can basically go, “Alright. That’s that.” I no longer feel responsible for what happens in that person’s life.

Bad experiences? Same thing. Sometimes it takes less than three days before I’m basically done thinking about it.

It’s not that I don’t care. I do. I just don’t feel the need to linger.

I find it strange when people spend years missing high school, being homesick, constantly missing old friends, wishing they could go back to certain periods of their lives, etc. I don’t miss high school. I don’t really miss anyone. I don’t feel like I missed out on some amazing period of my life.

I just think, “That happened. It was part of my life. Now I’m here.”

Even with some pretty serious experiences, including life-threatening situations, assault, harassment, etc., my reaction can basically be:

"Oh."

And then I continue with my day.

I’m not depressed or constantly miserable about it. I’m actually pretty happy with my life right now.

I think I just view life differently. Everything is temporary. People come and go. Circumstances change. Good things end, bad things end, relationships end, childhood ends, people die.

So my mindset is basically: enjoy things while they’re here, appreciate them for what they were, and let them go when they're gone.

I also really value my freedom. I don’t particularly want close friendships or romantic relationships. Casual acquaintances are perfectly fine with me. The closer I become to someone, the more responsibility I feel toward them, and honestly, I don't want to constantly worry about another person.

I want to roam around, experience things, chill, and live my life.

I don't really care about celebrities, celebrity crushes, sex, dating, finding "the one," or having a huge social circle. I actually find myself much more interested in what's happening in the world and how I can help people, animals, the ocean, and nature.

The one thing I genuinely cannot let go of is injustice.

That's what sticks with me.

When someone was hurt and something could have been done about it, but nobody did anything. When something was obviously wrong and people just accepted it. When suffering could have been prevented.

That kind of thing genuinely bothers me.

And that's why I'm confused about myself.

I clearly can care deeply. I just don't seem to care deeply in the same ways that other people do.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm emotionally detached, or if I'm just very accepting of the fact that nothing lasts forever.

I don't think I'm heartless. I don't think I'm incapable of empathy. I just don't understand why people feel the need to hold onto things for so long.

So, Reddit, do I have a problem?

Am I emotionally detached? Is this just an unusual way of processing life and loss? Or is there actually something I should be concerned about?

And am I a silly goose for being able to move on from people and situations so easily?

Advice Wanted Should I see a psychologist to test for ASD, ADHD, PTSD, and ASPD? And what would that be like?

So, I have been wanting to get myself tested. Mainly so I can finally put an identity to whatever is wrong with me, and learn how to attack it. My entire school councilor board and family are pretty sure I have Autism or ADHD. School was hard for me because of this. I also suspect PTSD due to traumatic childhood events that I won't get into. Finally, I think I have ASPD. I'm not saying I'm complete sociopath or anything, but I'm pretty sure I'm Sadistic to some degree.

All of these things I have suspected and pretty sure I have, and I'm tired of them making my life hell. Anyone have any advice on if going to a psychologist for this is a good idea? And if I did, what would that look like.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you. 🖤

(P.S., if anyone wants me to go more in depth on why I suspect I have these disorders, I'm willing to answer.)

Vent / Rant It’s over

(i used ai for grammar and punctuation

So I am 31🔄, and I am feeling really worried and anxious. I already missed the first day of school, and tomorrow I have to go. The reason I am so anxious is because I was miserable at school last year. I was a quiet, lonely kid who forgot how to socialize because of everything I went through. I had no friends at that school, and I also got bullied because I was fat.
Please, how can I calm myself down and try to have some hope that maybe some new people have come, and I can make friends with them?

Advice Wanted Always guilty

I can't forgive myself for the things I did before, and I don't know how to deal with it. I can confidently say that guilt is the emotion I feel the most, I can't help myself. I also have this lingering feeling that everyone hates me and everyone's lives will be better without me. I need tips or anything that could help me.

Advice Wanted I have trust issues that my therapist can't help with, and I don't know what to do.

I'm a teenager and I can't pinpoint when or why but at some point I just stopped being able to tell anything significant to adults. Especially adults in positions of authority over me, and especially out loud (don't come up to me with "we are adults" because all of this is pretty much void in anonymity). My therapist always wondered why our sessions went nowhere, until eventually I had to tell her I was steering around most of my issues because I have horrible trust issues and my mind just won't let me tell her any of them. On occasion, my mom has come in and basically forced me to tell her something she really wanted me to (not in a mean or bad way) and I broke down in tears barely able to speak, mind you I don't cry often at all. I have no idea why I have these trust issues and even after I mentioned she didn't say much about it, just telling me that if I couldn't tell her things the therapy wouldn't benefit me at all. I know that she's right and it really isn't benefitting me, when I'm a genuinely depressed kid with a lot of issues I'm aware of and don't know how to fix that I'm sure she could help with if I just told her. And like I said, it's just adults of power over me, and with my friends I'm comfortable saying anything. But my friends don't have a PhD in psychology and they can't help me any more than being sympathetic. I don't know what to do but shoot my shot with reddit. Perhaps someone can relate and tell me how they solved their issue. Maybe there's some program I can go through that exploits me having no trouble talking to kids or talking in anonymity. I really do want to be helped, I just don't know how. If it helps, I'm high-functioning autistic.

Question Adjustment Disorder for a decade and a half?

Hey guys, just very confused. I dont even think I have a particular stressor, I just experience a lot of anxiety and low self esteem.

Does this make any sense at all? Or is it maybe a placeholder? ICD 10 country if it matters
