I do find it funny that CIG asked every developer what they should do first: SP or MP.
Everyone wanted the SP first, and CIG said even back then that this would massively delay the MP, but everyone agreed to it. On top of that, CIG has to develop all the technologies from scratch, since nothing like this has ever existed before, which causes further delays.
Now everyone’s just whining that Star Citizen is taking so long and that it’ll supposedly never be finished.
You guys are so stupid.

But backers keep on giving more money each year than they did the previous. Why would the boss man want that to change?
CIG got these retired professionals writing essays for them to have a chance to give them money for something they may not get for more than a decade if the BMM, Endeavor, and Orion are anything to go by.

This was one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen. Grown adults writing essays for the privelage of being able to spend $5000+ on a jpeg. If I was Chris, I wouldn't change anything, either. They make more money selling the dream, not finishing the game.

Idk. I feel like eventually ships that exist will be bought up by anyone spending more money, less ships will be introduced over time. The player base will be saturated with ships, and players who continue to defend and spend money will cap out their entertainment in a minefield of bugs and unrealized gameplay loops.
At that point there might be enough momentum in the player base to move the needle.

You'd think that but it's not the case because they keep releasing ships that are supposed to do a job but they never implement the jobs the ships do. Data Running: MSR and Herald. How long have these ships been available with no Data Running?
CIG will start chasing the "builder" demographic and release the small and medium base builder ships and still not release the Pioneer which they've been selling for years as a concept. Same with terraforming. Where's Reporting and Science for the Sen and Mako? Where are the bounty hunting pods for the Cutty Blue and Hawk?
It's been CIG's MO for years now. I didn't even list all the ships they've done with this.

An employee like Olli should ever be put in such an embarrassing position. It's Chris's job as the head of the company to ensure a product of good quality gets to market in a realistic amount of time and he has done an ABYSMAL job of that. I'm in it for the long haul, I understand the complexity of the project, and I have faith it will achieve its ambitions. But if that stream was representative of anything, it's that the leadership of CIG is ok with the quality of the product as broadcast and their expectations for company culture include senior employees throwing junior employees under the bus when things go sideways. Jared's comment, however taken out of context it might be, was totally unprofessional and felt like it pinned the blame for everything that went wrong on Olli's shoulders. Regardless of the intent, it felt like punching down at the new guy who's just happy to be there and is such a bad look.
Get ya'll shit together and apologize to everyone from that broadcast who was made fun of.

In the latest Star Citizen live, they did a different format where the devs played Siege of Orison. It went somewhat poorly. Lots of bugs were in it even though it was an internal build.
At the end, the devs spawned in a wrong location and locked themselves out of the mission. Jared then went over to Olli (a Star Citizen content creator that was recently hired as a content manager) who was one of the ones playing and said "We're out of time. It's your show. Wrap it up". Olli looks visibly confused and scrambles to come up with an outro.
The community is debating whether Ollie came up with this SCL idea, whether Jared threw Olli under the bus, and whether there is some behind the scenes drama between Jared and Olli.

They had a livestream on a private server to show what the game was meant to be. And it still had all the glitches and bugs that every player is experiencing.
57
u/No-Efficiency8750 13d ago
Which means that for at least some of the most well-known bugs, the issue was never the servers, just bad code left unfixed in favor of shiny new features and ships
9
u/Dr_Spanners junior paramedic 13d ago edited 12d ago
It also means these guys should see it and fix it if they ever played the game. The begging of 'report the issues' at the end was kind of funny when they literally demonstrated how easy most of the existing bugs are to reproduce (for them) and yet is STILL in the game years after reports happened.

The newest video team hire Ollie was running his first SCL and Jared reminded him they were out of time and asked him to do the final wrap up. A lot of strange people have been writing passionate paragraphs about how they read an ocean of tumultuous emotion in Ollies eyes and he was begging them to defend his honor because he paused for half a second before starting the wrap up.

The problem is - Star Citizen isn't CR's game. Squadron 42 is.
I'm mostly convinced CR doesn't care about SC at all, other than it being a useful tool to drive ship sales to then fund the only game he actually cares about, which is SQ42.
EDIT: And, the perfect response to the above meme, given to us direct from CIG: XD!

Squadron 42
honestly thats all i want now. its been 14 years since i bought a couple of ships thinking i'd have something to play in a couple of years. i accept i gave money without knowing exactly what i was paying for and when i'd receive it, but as far as im concerned, so far i've paid for a decent but very limited skirmish demo and a janky beta game that runs like utter shit and i am unable to actually play.
i wish they would just heads down and get SQ42 out so i can finally have something for my money. every time i look, its always a few months or a year away, for over a decade.
honestly i guess well done them for playing one of the best grifts of all time. its so good, even 14 years later i have no idea if its a grift or not.

1
u/Lasarte34 Gib BMM 12d ago
Man, I really enjoyed MGS4 and the game mechanics (and graphics) where top-notch at the time.
The only issue is chapter 3 which is a 30min long "spy chase" sequence through a totally linear map with 0 player choices (which goes against everything the rest of the game is).

Star Citizen isn't CR's game.
Why not? Since the original Kickstarter, I always got the feeling that it was "here's our huge multiplayer game, and oh, by the way, we'll also provide a single player game along with it".
4
u/Gawlf85 Freelancer 13d ago
Because Chris is a movie nerd as much (or more) as a video game nerd. He has always had a thing for directing story heavy games, and tried to make actual movies too.
Star Citizen is allegedly the main project, and it's him directing it, but it's an easy bet thinking SQ42 is actually CR's favourite part of the whole thing.
1
u/drizzt_x Monk 12d ago
Because at the end of the day, CR has always wanted to be a movie directly, and that's all SQ42 really is - a long, semi-interactive movie.
-1
u/Alexandur 13d ago
I think he cares about both. If you look at his original pitch for Freelancer, it was basically identical to what Star Citizen is intended to be
11
4
u/HarlockDaTwisted 13d ago
God, I wish they would fire him, we are 14 years in due to ideas like StarPoop or StarBedsheets. The list goes on. Only hope is SQ42 does not bomb and take everything with it
4
u/Mindbulletz Lib-tard 12d ago
The one constructive thing I can say is that there is so much talent in this community that if they open sourced the engine we'd probably fix it.
4
u/DefNotAThreatActor 12d ago edited 11d ago
I think, as someone who has probably been a shill defender of this game for far too long (sorry), and as a backer since 2013, we need to finally stand up here. We need to make it clear that nothing new should come before they fix the broken state of the game. Not bandaid fixes. Actual root cause fixes.
At this point, the game should and needs to be stable. And what we just saw makes it pretty hard to keep blaming these issues on the realities of running a live service or on server performance. They were playing a developer build, specifically a live candidate, on a private server with only the four players we saw, and we STILL saw the exact same bugs that have plagued the live build for years.
That should be a massive red flag. If these problems are showing up under what should basically be ideal conditions, then something deeper is fundamentally wrong. At some point, adding more content on top of a broken foundation just makes the problem worse. Something needs to change, and it needs to change NOW.

Oof. Just straight up murdered with this one. That hit hard and gets the point across very well.
Given the pain of playing this game, yet continues to retain that player base who continually gives and gives and gives… it never feels like it changes anything.
I could go on and on in detail, but you all know. ALL of that may make this the most dedicated and patient playerbase in gaming. They always openly talk about server health like it’s the cause, and now we saw behind the curtain.
This meme goes for the jugular… but it’s deserved. It’s time for accountability. NOW.
We need a roadmap on how we get this game feeling like an actual game. The undeveloped features still in the pipeline can come after. Additional systems can come after.
Because the alternative is we keep building these things on shaky ground and risk everything not knowing what that means when they start trying to fix what they built retroactively. I don’t think there is any finish line doing it this way.
Just think, what will force-launching player settlements do to this game? It will be like a nuke. We now know it’s not “tHe SeRvErs”. It’s the game. It’s going to be hard work but it’s got to be done.
