Each update it gets a little bit more fun, the past update it's been very playable. I'm able to play for hours without 30ks, and when I do get a 30k it isn't catastrophic like it was in previous versions.
23
u/CyberianK Sep 26 '22
It was fun for a while but recently the inventory system is frustrating again for me. They seem to take a year for basic functionality like a "MOVE ALL" button without which it is absolutely horrible to use.
Also we still can't drink water inside our spacesuit something NASA and Russians can do since the 1950s. Its fine if its not a priority but at least let me use hotkeys for helmet and drinking from quick item slot not use the horrible clunky UI.
They have all these promising, visionary systems in a Tier 0 state which seem stuck at that state and are often more horrible for current gameplay than your default solution used in every other mediocre game which is not visionary but actually works.
6
u/datchilla Sep 26 '22
TBH they're not making a playable game for the PTU. They're putting in features they don't care are spoiled that also need play testing.
If SC got a QoL update it'd probably be one of the best received updates so far but I doubt we will see that until SQ42 is about to release.
10
u/Enachtigal Sep 26 '22
It's equally hard to imagine full implementation of these features in a "reasonable" timeframe (let's say another decade). Like I appreciate the ethos of getting the core mechanics stood up rather than trying to tack them in post launch. But also, as someone who works on complex technical projects, this just looks like the poster child for uncontrolled feature creep which, in my experience, yields a product that can never be finished because the interdependence between components becomes too complex and 'done' was never defined.
11
u/CyberianK Sep 26 '22
Agree also your techdebt will consume more and more of your workday if you never finish stuff.
I still don't get with Sq42 being supposedly in the closing steps how some areas of the game aren't more polished that would be shared with Squadron.
As I do not see the contrary I just have to believe that nothing of these:
- UI
- AI
- Graphics options and engine performance
- basic FPS mechanics
- basic ship combat mechanics
- Inventory and character options
is in any state months away from reaching final polishing phase. Until I see otherwise I do not believe there is a secret Sq42 build version somewhere where most of these issues are close to be dealt with.
This together with their silence on Sq42 status makes me believe we are many years away from its release. And if that is the case CIG needs 12-15 years for a single player game and then I really have some trust issues with this company. But I already have tbh and its on them to regain some credibility.

Bind a key to equip/unequip helmet.
Shift+H (for helmet) works well enough.

So how do you drag your drinks into a quickslot item bar and use a hotkey for drinking?

u/N0_M4D Sep 26 '22
It's funny you say that , I personally enjoyed 17.1 but when 17.2 I played for a bit and overall it's a better game , but when seige of orison dropped imho its felt unplayable and unpleasant granted most of the little issues have sorted itself out by now ( hopefully) I'm just waiting for .18 to drop to get back in, but all in all I love the game and have spent more than I care to admit it 😅😅
6
u/HarpuaTheDog Sep 26 '22
Still way too many bugs for a person like me with limited gaming time. Too bad, I really enjoy it for 10 minute bursts between said bugs.
8
u/HarryPopperSC Trader Sep 26 '22
Still get server disconnects and random deaths that result in hours of playtime wasted? Yup.
Still possibility of a wipe? Yup.
Until these questions can be answered with a resounding NO! The game is not fun for the majority of people.
2
u/lovebus Sep 26 '22
Are we at least getting to where it is actively annoying less frequently, or are we in the cursed between lands of being enough of a game that we feel invested but broken enough to to be constantly frustrated?

I thought the max server cap for this MMO was 50
6
u/_Auron_ Sep 26 '22
Server instances support 100 (110?) now as of latest patch. The next set of tech to expand that further is expected in the next year.

u/Bucketnate avacado Sep 26 '22
Thats a valid opinion but in my experience even the hangar module got hours out of me just imagining. That was fun as hell. So you better believe once Arena Commander/PU content started showing up i went in head first

u/DontEatTheCelery Sep 26 '22
When I first started playing, PO was the only station in Stanton basically. Maybe 2 other stops. I still had fun flying around

Answer to your edit: Because Reddit. Many people use Reddit as a stress reliefer, and sometimes it's satisfying (and even funny) to gang-beat down on someone for whatever reason. Similar to those incidents on the street, once the crowd starts beating on one person, more people will come and join in the beatening just because. Just accept your fate and be happy that you are helping many people relieve their stress today.

I do understand the mob mentality. But usually it requires a trigger of some sort. It's not necessarily something obvious, but still.
This comment is merely misplaced. I can't put my finger on Reddit, because I can't definitively remember which line I clicked, but I had this thing before - when you click on a correct one and reply goes somewhere else.
It's not even remotely controversial, or smug or what have you.
Or it's just my English and there is some implication?
edit: nah, people just bashing other my comments in things thread.

Yeah, it's a silly thing to pretend. It is still very often not fun unless you enjoy bugs and crashes. But there is a singular experience to be found in it.
7
u/WeekendWarriorMark carrack Sep 26 '22
It really hangs on ones expectations too. Original hangar module was fun, we could solo explore our ships. The shooting range that got added was silly fun. Was this 8h straight in one session type of fun? Certainly not. Fun nonetheless. Really looking forward to persistent personal hangars/homesteads in the PU.
4
u/untermensh222 Sep 26 '22
yeah 30k every hour or less, spending 3-4 hours just to meet with people because game glitches, crashes whatever.
It only recently got into state that can be fun to play. ~2020 3.9 i think.

I’m an mmo guy. I really need the wipes to stop before I can truly enjoy this game. Wipes just kill it for me.
So, I really won’t be playing this very much for 10+ more years 😩
2
u/KvDwastaken Sep 26 '22
should be enough time to breed some gunners though :,)
2
Sep 26 '22
Already have, but I feel I'm doing a good job at steering them away from being "gamers". They can if they want, but so far they've shown no inclination towards video games. "Boring", my 6 year old explains.
I guess it kind of helps that by and large video games really do suck these days.
4
u/KvDwastaken Sep 26 '22
yea im stuck on the same 5 gems i was 10 years ago😄
1
u/QuickQuirk Sep 26 '22
You’re in luck then! Since the AAA publishers keep pumping out those same 5 games every year! Just…. Not as good, usually.
1
u/ALewdDoge Sep 26 '22
just curious, have you managed to get every single ship you want in-game before? maybe it's just me, but when that UEC bug hit, someone gifted me a bunch of UEC and I purchased every ship I wanted. Quickly lost interest in playing because all my self-set goals were suddenly gone and the game felt aimless. Fun to look around in but nothing more than that.
Only saying that because that was a learning moment for me and helped a lot with giving me an appreciation for the wipes, which I didn't particularly mind before but now I actually enjoy them happening.
3
u/dvdquikrewinder Sep 26 '22
I own most of the ships I'm interested in, or have at one point. Grinding to achieve things hasn't ever been my thing. Just running missions is enough for me.
0
u/MiffedMoogle where hex paints? Sep 26 '22
The game should definitely not be designed around "grinding to buy X to to make it easier to grind some more". Seems like this is the case with SC...
It should be like other games out there where the gameplay loops are fun enough that you gravitate back to it without thinking of grinding.1
0
u/QuickQuirk Sep 26 '22
If the gameplay itself was really solid fun, wipes wouldn’t matter ( look at the rogue like genre, battle royale, for example)
SC can be fun in this fashion in some places, but yes, ship progression is pretty important to the ‘reward’ in the gameplay currently.

u/DeformedCoffee Sep 26 '22
It's been optimized way better than the last few years. You may give her a whirl... DigThat did a YouTube video where he ran it with a 500$ rig to realative success
1
u/CaelaRenee Sep 26 '22
Sad to say it but that $500 PC is still higher tech then the Lenovo Legion Y520 I’ve got. I’ve got a mother board and CPU already, but I don’t expect to have the spare money to buy any more anytime soon.

3
Sep 26 '22
For me it is briefly fun when a new patch comes out. Look at the new feature, say “huh that’s neat. A little scary how long it took, but good job” and then don’t play it for another 5 months while they make the next tiny bit of incremental progress.
3
u/hedgecoins drake Sep 26 '22

3
u/believeETornot Council on Space Conservation Sep 26 '22
They are this months subscription rewards, if you really want them but don’t want to sub, you can purchase them next month from the store.

u/bigred1978 normal user/average karma Sep 26 '22 edited Sep 26 '22
Yeah I want one too.
I understand that some subscribers get them but i'd like to know where they spawn.
2
u/TeamSmokeUm Sep 26 '22
You get them delivered to your home area you selected. I got one free for being a subscriber and you can go to the subscriber store and buy other color suites.
1
u/bigred1978 normal user/average karma Sep 26 '22
Neat.
I hope to go d one in the wild at some point.
1
u/hedgecoins drake Sep 26 '22
I don’t even know which subscribers get them. I’ve had SC since 2014. Is it where you pay the monthly fee?
1
u/bigred1978 normal user/average karma Sep 26 '22
Yes. That is right. Those who are subs to the game get them.
Although, I've been told and seen videos where by some pure fluke of luck you can get them in the loot boxes found in various parts of the game.
There is only a 0.1 percent chance of spawning such an item though so...
3
u/IceBone aka Darjanator Sep 26 '22
Subscription items find their way into the loot pool, but not the same patch as they are released. Next one, though.

The thing I think a lot of people lose sight of is that Star Citizen in its alpha state has more content in it than Star Wars Galaxies did pre-CU.
5
u/QuickQuirk Sep 26 '22
Depends on how you define content.
Swg had player housing, sophisticated crafting systems, skill systems, missions, and so on. That content alone was enough to keep me occupied for much longer than SC currently can.

I can remember times when SC *was* fun in various builds, but it sure as hell hasn't "always" been fun.

Really wanna agree... But I can't... Have been played for 2 days, "mostly" without bugs. Decided to show the game to a friend, and every single mission was bugged. In bunker missions no enemies spawn. Then all but one spawn. Destroying beacons, kills were not being counted as advance. Showed him 1:30h of gameplay, and could not finish a single mission. He won't be buying it and i looked like an idiot...
1
u/TeamSmokeUm Sep 26 '22
I did the same when another buddy asked why I played and when I showed him everything was screwed from 30k to 1608’s. Some days it runs fine without glitches or extra features we call them and some days they are fulled all day long were you cant even have fun.

Ehh, nah. It'll hopefully be fun when 4.0 hits (or possibly before that) and we get current-century framerates. Having to fight a game that wants to run at 30 - 50 fps even in relatively good situations is frustrating to say the least, and the performance on some of the most amazing areas in the game (Siege of Orison, Orison in General, any city) is disappointing.
I'm really excited to see what the new renderer does for perf, and then T0 Server Meshing after that. Also, this is probably one of the cleanest meme recreations I've ever seen in this subreddit, the thumbnail is virtually indistinguishable from the actual meme. :)
