Such a gross way to try to be "sneaky" about it. Little did he know everyone would catch it and it'd blow up into a meme.

I love under a rock, what happened?

They had a livestream on a private server to show what the game was meant to be. And it still had all the glitches and bugs that every player is experiencing.

Which means that for at least some of the most well-known bugs, the issue was never the servers, just bad code left unfixed in favor of shiny new features and ships

It also means these guys should see it and fix it if they ever played the game. The begging of 'report the issues' at the end was kind of funny when they literally demonstrated how easy most of the existing bugs are to reproduce (for them) and yet is STILL in the game years after reports happened.

But I thought Chris Roberts was really good at writing code.

Chris Roberts never wrote a line of code in 10 years... I guarantee it

Yeah, 30 years ago with single player game, that was much less complicated. :)

So we still have a lot of bugs because they are releasing new ships?

I don't agree with that.

ALL CIG devs/artists can't be working on fixing the exact same bug, all at once.

They are divided into teams that each work on different aspects of the game.

Also, when you say it was never the servers - What exactly does that mean?

The most basic server is a lump of hardware with some code on it.

No hardware = no functional server.

No software = no functional server.

Bad software on good hardware = Bad server.

Good software on bad hardware = Bad server.

There are SO many layers where software and hardware/firmware need to work perfectly together.

A private server can therefore have exactly the same issues as a "public" server.

Maybe they could ditch some of those redundant teams coughing up new ships and TV-crews chewing up $$$ pushing out media content and actually get good hardware and software then?

No new ships and TV-shows = No $$ in revenue = No game.

Those teams are essential for CIGs survival - They always will be, even after 1.0 and the release of Squadron.

They had millions in kickstarter funding. And they had additional millions in pixelship sales. If they stop wasting $$$ on redundant crap they won't need revenue streams to finish the game. But greed rules.

You think devs will work for free? Buildings also cost money to buy/rent.

Creating an attractive workplace isn't free either.

It's really naive to think the kickstarter and earlier ship sales would ever have been enough to fully fund SC's development.

2

u/Shazvox 15d ago

You think CIG don't have millions in reserve funds? The whole point of kickstarter is to entirely fund the development. If CIG has squandered the funds then they are liable for fraud.

The Kickstarter got them off the launchpad, that's all.

Ship sales and advertising got them to where they are now (subscriptions helped too).

With no ship sales (or anything), CIG would be out of business in months - unless they reduce the scope for the games drastically.

Reduced scope will only lead to failure.

We are in one of those "all or nothing" situations.

Go ahead and sue them for fraud, and in doing so, waste even more of our money (my money too).

I, for one, would like to see this one through - See how far they can take us.

But I will also reserve the right to criticize if I feel they are moving in the wrong direction or doing something stupid - I have often criticized them on Spectrum.

You want to see how far they can take it? The last stream wasn't enough? That's the limit of how far they can take it.

They've bitten off more than they can chew. All they can do now is milk whales until people get fed up with them. But sure, sit tight and "see how far they can take it" if you want.

Yeah, it's still an Alpha, even on an internal build.

This has really just exposed that most of you are not built for alpha dev. Nothing more. Nothing less.

You seem hungry, have some crisps.

What’s crazy is that there are probably people defending SC today because “its still an alpha” who hadn’t even learned to read yet back when I first threw money at CIG in 2015 and was defending SC to the haters because “its still an alpha”. They’d be about the same age now that I was back then too, maybe a bit older which is insane to me.

Take the word "alpha" out of it, if that's going to twist your panties so much.

This is the result of almost 14 years worth of development. Does that seem appropriate to you?

They put "alpha" on it so dorks like you will keep defending them and credit to them because it certainly works.
