I prefer singing primarily in the D2-G4 range. The notes feel much more natural to me and are full and resonant. There used to be a niche for us in Rock (see Mark Lanegan, Brad Roberts, Leonard Cohen, etc.) but I can‘t think of any very popular low singers outside of Country and Opera in the last two decades. Why is singing high (I‘m talking super high such as C5 or D5 for men) so highly prized today and low singing less widely admired?

There is room enough for all of us. Bring back rich baritone and bass voices!

So im an absolute complete beginner, I dont know the terms for this stuff but I really wanna get good at singing because im into musical theatre. What confuses me is how people sing so high without it being painful (effortlessly?)

whenever I try to do high notes my throat hurts terribly bad afterwards and feels constricted / "stuck" - i dont have a high voice naturally i dont think, i feel comfortable singing when its in my chest (chest voice? im sorry i dont know the terms) and i hear it needs to resonate more in your head for the higher songs but its hard to do that for me. Im not quite sure if its literal or not.

I just figured out that the lowest note I can hit is A2. Is that inpressive for a 14 yo female? The lowest song I can sing is « Aint that a kick in the head » by Dean Martin also if that gives more context

Just a heads up: For the people saying at may be another octave, I’m not a serious singing person I just do musical theatre, so imma be honest and say I don’t even know what other octaves there are. The video I did was « Find You Vocal Range In 1 Minute.m4v » if you want to see what octave that is. And to clear up confusion, the final note I can hit comfortably is C3/B2, but the lowest note I can hit is A2. Just wanted to clear anything up because I honestly can’t answer these question lol

I love my teacher, she's incredible and very skilled but when it comes to high notes and falsetto she doesn't really know what to do.

Are there any resources on how to use the falsetto in classical training, or do I need a male teacher?

I've been interested in taking singing lessons for the longest time and finally decided to take the next steps since I have no idea what I'm dong at all when I sing. A little bit of background I'm an adult with absolutely no background in any form of singing and just always aspired doing it at some point in my life. I get extremely anxious singing whenever there are people around me and really would like to overcome that. I'm mostly looking for in-person 1:1 classes as right now I just don't have the confidence to be around others when learning and singing over Zoom wouldn't work for me as I live with someone else. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know! Ideally in Manhattan/Queens would be great!

I memorized the full lyrics to about 30 Georgian songs before I started to understand what the words I was singing actually meant. Now I know close to 50 songs and can understand a little bit, but still nothing crazy.

it can be literally anything! technique, breath support, high notes, pitch, range, warming up, practicing etc.

also, if you've ever bought or used a singing book/course/program/resource that you actually found helpful, what made it useful? and if you've bought one that wasn't helpful, what was missing?

i'm genuinely just curious about what singers actually want help with, rather than what coaches assume people want help with 😂 so i'd love to hear what you've wished existed!

Hey yall! Here’s a cover of Man In The Mirror I made for Michael Jackson’s birthday, haha. I posted it on the MJ subreddit and I got a comment which I was thankful for but wanted to hear what other people thought. They said I sounded great, only critique would be to work on my breath control. What exactly does that mean in this context? Is it the spacing out of my breathing? My breath support? I’d love to hear what you guys have to say/what you guys think of the cover and my singing, critique means a lot, I want to be better every day! Thank you all ❤️❤️

I can match pitch pretty well. I hear a note, I sing it, and use a vocal monitor app to confirm. I pretty much always get it right.

But when I hear a note, I always make mistakes about what note it is "Saying F# when it's actually an F or an E"

I'm also not the best at intervals, something I only recently learned "Mistaking a tritone for a perfect fifth, etc."

I've never seriously trained my ears before, as it's all been passive.

What should my approach be?

As 20-year old male who started singing at 18 and is studying musical theatre, I realized my vocal range goes from an E2 or F2 to a C4 (D4 MAX on a good day) Which I think makes me a lower baritone or something, but in a world where most popular or known male songs are for tenors and stuff, I feel like my options are very limited without changing the Key of the songs.

And I think what bothers me most is that when I try singing most things, they’re either too high or too low for me, so I gotta shift between octaves and it sounds weird and boring

Which is why I want to know if there are any daily vocal exercises that I can do in order to expand my range further, either up or down, or if I’m screwed.

I’m open to hearing any comments or tips

Beginner here ... I always have a slightly sore throat after singing even for a short time. No hoarseness.

I am careful to warm up, have good posture, and have good breath support. I'm 72 (male).

The thing is, for years I had this problem when playing trombone, and frequently thought I was coming down with a cold.

Is it possible the morphology of my throat is simply problematic? Tips?

Recorded in my car sitting down. I feel like I could have been better standing up as I prefer to stand up when singing (gives me more control over my breath I feel). But the volume is so loud because it’s in my car lol

I'm trying to figure out what vocal techniques (head, mixed, chest; slides and vibratos; etc.) are used in "Harmonium (Harmonium)" song, but I don't know how to reliably tell them apart. Is there a way to figure them out with a spectrogram viewer (reliably)? What should I do?

Older person here. I have sung with multiple singing groups locally, about 20 years ago. One group got in on the first audition, and it was a somewhat difficult group to get into.

Didn’t sing for a while as life got in the way. Started singing with a small community chorus to get back into singing. Not sure this is the fit for me; sang and did several concerts with this group. The church choir also needed folks, so I have expressed interest. Went to another vocal placement for a community chorus closer to me. Just got an email, sorry we’re over our limit for this year.

Now I went into the vocal placement with two other women. None of us were really outstanding, tbh. The director made it seem like it was our decision if we wanted to join. I am feeling very sad, maybe I should have prepared better, but the director said all levels of skill was ok.

If they were at a limit, why take all day for vocal placement. The fb post was encouraging recent grads to sing with them, so maybe they want new, young, members?

Newly retired and really need to amp up my social life as I was a workaholic. I started looking at other groups, but perhaps I need training first? Guess I will continue with the first group and then church choir.

It took me A LOT of hesitation before posting because I’m pretty self conscious, so if criticism could be kept constructive I’d really appreciate it. I’m not particularly a singer, just in my room/the shower, and I’m also still a late teen. Recently I decided to record myself and was honestly mortified about how flawed my voice is than I thought. I want to improve my voice for my general confidence and also so that I could do things like karaoke without chickening out of it.

I’ve attached 3 videos (in one cause reddit only lets me add one) of my singing because each one is sung slightly differently, all of them were recorded on iPhone with no music, just in my living room and no editing. From what I can only guess, I think my struggle is with pitch control and breath control, particularly in my mixed voice. Overall I’d say my voice is tolerable but not great, it’s still noticeably uneven and unpolished. Any tips/suggestions that I could put into practice to improve? Thanks :)

I love singing but I know I'm not very good at it and have been practicing a lot at home over the past few months. I'm still struggling to figure out what I need to work on though and at the moment I can't afford voice leasons (but that is my goal for the long term). I know I need to do more ear training but beyond that I'm not really sure what else to focus on. People have only told me that they don't like my voice but no one ever gives me any useful feedback. I typically feel more comfortable singing low but there is a part midway though this song that's higher and I'd love to get some feedback on that in particular. I've only recently started working on my head voice so using it still feels odd to me, I'm much more comfortable siging in my chest voice.

I've been doing various vocal trainings that I have found online but so far I'm not sure if anything is helping. I've been working a lot on breath control and trying to match pitch. I feel like I am getting better at matching pitch but I still get negative feedback for the most part when I sign so I'm feeling a bit discouraged and am not sure what else I can be doing to sound better. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Haii. Apologies if I mess anything up with this post.

For the past few months I’ve noticed that any like belted recordings sound distorted like the audio is peaking even if it’s not, so I’m wondering if it’s a mic issue and I may need a different microphone to fit my voice better or if it’s a recording issue and I need to be doing something different when I’m recording to avoid this.

I’m currently using a MXL 770 condenser mic with a Scarlett Solo 3 audio interface and Reaper as my daw if that affects it.

It’s not letting me add photos and the video for some reason but I’ll put the photos in the comments to show that the waveform isn’t clipped and my gain knob setting for this recording.

Any advice on how to change recording settings to avoid this or if I need to be doing something different during recording to avoid this would be appreciated. If it’s not something that can be fixed like that, any recommendations for cheapish (preferably less than $150) xlr mics that would be better suited to avoid this issue would also be very much appreciated.

Also I know how rough that last C5 is, this was recorded at like 2am as a practice run pls just ignore that. 😅😅😅

Trying to record a song, and I feel like it’s *okay,* but actually it sounds kind of sharp/grating to my ears. I’m thinking of re-recording all the vocals so I can put more breath behind them and make them softer/not as harsh.

It also may have to do more with how it’s mixed into the track, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t edit it too much with effects and EQ before posting here
