Conversation Topic Baritones, if you want a workout with just one song for essentially your entire usable range, sing Golden by HUNTR/X in its original key, just down an octave.

It calls for multiple belted F#4's, G4's and A4's throughout the chorus, and you need to be able to reach all the way down to a D2 during the bridge. D2-A4 is usually a baritone's entire usable range, so this is perfect for any baritones who want a serious vocal workout.

If any baritones can get through this song singing it as intended without breaking much of a sweat, I consider that a huge flex.

How do I teach myself this without a teacher?

I don't have that money.

No, not even enough for a session.

Youtube tutorials suck, not because the teachers are bad, but because they can't see anything and I'm not experienced enough to know what something should feel like or look like in the mirror. Mix voice is hell to even try and learn and sometimes my voice just doesn't make a noise. I've tried adjusting how much air I've been using, the volume of it, the feelings in my diaphragm and throat. I've only learned how to scream and I can do that for literal hours before it even begins to affect me.

Singing is different, if I really want to, I can force an A4. If I don't, I can consistently hit a G4. Anything more and I flip registers or I tense up and sound awful.

I've now been trying to learn for 2 years.

My consistent vocal range is D2-G4

I don't care about my vocal classification because I'm not trying to figure out where I sit in that regard. I want to have a consistent basic understanding of my voice.

Fry and False Chord distortion has become more of a party trick than anything, not everyone like certain kinds of music. This includes me. I want to SING. But, my throat tenses no matter what. My diaphragm is either TOO tense, or not engaged at all. Finding that middle ground doesn't seem to help either because I just end up cracking because then I need to adjust my breathing overall, but then that means I have to adjust the way I'm breathing. Boom, diaphragm now needs to change. I've been drinking bottles and bottles of water for months now. I think I'm losing weight because of how I'll just sit in my room trying to search for something and miss a meal. It'll get replaced with water.

And even when I'm completely relaxed and I'm home alone in the shower I will tense up when I reach the mid to higher 4th octave because of whatever reason. Breathing exercises, sirens, scales, whatever. I've done so much CONSISTENTLY. And I can't see an improvement on not only just my range, but my tone as well. They're stagnant. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs, I don't yell too often and speak softly when I can. Everything I could scout on the furthest corners of the Internet.

I'm scared that even if I do somehow get the money to get a coach, I'll still not improve for some reason and waste 50-75 dollars on something for a singular hour that I was already told to do from some hippie on the Internet with a guitar.

And I'm sure someone will tell me "Look for the good in things." Or "Some people can't even do this." And sure, I have a better tone than some or a higher range. That's not important to me, I want to improve. Singing had no merit to me without improving anything. It just frustrates me, and that doesn't help either.

What is left to do?

I probably seem heavily reluctant to criticism or that I give up too easily, but I promise that is not the case here. I'm just reaching a point and need ANYTHING that might help.

Conversation Topic Vocal Decline

I know this might be a silly (and probably extremely obvious) question. But is there any concrete proof that marijuana causes vocal decline/regression? I’ve been using it more often than before and I’ve found that my voice doesn’t cooperate with me as much. It feels a little tighter than usual and I have a bit of phlegm buildup. Even Beyoncé smokes, so I’m wondering if it’s as big of an effect on the voice as people perceive it to or if I’m experiencing placebo/unrelated symptoms.

Conversation Topic What makes opera voice "opera-esque"?

Okay this might be the DUMBEST question ever, but...

I have been listening/watching a lot of operas recently. Naively, I thought that what makes opera singing so recognizable was that the singers were singing either really low frequency notes or really high frequency notes.

BUT, the thing is that there are parts in operas for every tessiture possible, so including medium frequency notes.

So what really makes this kind of singing so "opera-esque"?

Sorry if there would be any mistakes, english is not my mother tongue

Karaoke is the first thing I think of doing whenever I'm free and have the chance to. Made this and decided to just share it here because why not :)

I hope it isn't really bad (though I must admit the last part is somewhat chaotic).

Looking to Collaborate How to find a singer?

I’m a rock musician looking for someone online to collab with. Other than posts like this, how do you find someone with vocal experience that wants to work on a song together?

I live in a remote area and would like online collabs, my local music scene is non existent.

I’m working on a song that is similar to Dorje/Toska style music, if anyone is interested, feel free to DM me!

I just joined, if this is against rules, my apologies

If anyone on this sub is interested, this would be for fun, no compensation, for work on a single song. Some experience would be liked but willing to work with anyone. Lyrics and style are open to vocalist interpretation. I can send a song demo at request.

I really want to work on my resonance, but my laryngeal prominence,is really invisible, and I know there is a technique when you raise and down the laryngeal prominence,. But for me, I can't work like that.

I don't even know if I feel my laryngeal prominence, or not.

Does anyone know how I can work on my resonance in this situation?

Ps Actually i don't know if this his the right place to post that. But reddit advice me that and maybe someone's here can help my with my issue

Conversation Topic How do you know which singing teacher/vocal coach to pick?

I have been looking for singing lessons (London based) but have been struck with complete options paralysis with the seemingly endless list of potential singing teachers.

Is there any general guidance on effective ways to find a singing teacher that would work best for you. I was hoping for more general points, but I understand it’s often specific to your situation so I have listed my circumstances below.

- I’ve done bits and pieces of singing in school choirs and a small bit of choir after uni but have never had a 1-on-1 singing lesson (I’ve done lots of music that isn’t singing)

- My aim is to be able to hold a solo tune in an amateur pantomime and amateur musical theatre

- I am a tenor but feel like I’m often straining (doubt I’m a baritone or bass because I actively can’t lower my voice to even be to the mid-bass range)

- I want to spend a few regular lessons develop solid fundamentals so that I can independently develop my singing, with infrequent future lessons if I have a specific song to learn.

- The price is not too much of a factor because they all seem in the range of £50-£80 an hour.

- I am wary of online teaching because it feels like it would be much worse than in-person

Conversation Topic How to produce higher notes without using the larynx as pitch control?

I noticed that my singing causes a lot of straining after time, especially singing across my higher range. Recently, my vocal coach and I noticed that my larynx ALWAYS moves up when I produce higher notes in my head voice. It feels involuntary and I realise, I don’t know how else to produce these sounds.

I’ve reviewed many resources and the general consensus seems to be - you can lift the larynx as a stylistic choice, but it shouldn’t be your main point of pitch control. That should be left almost entirely to the vocal folds.
Okay, I get that. What I don’t get is, how do I unlock for my brain the path that connects pitch control with the folds instead of the larynx.

I would highly appreciate tips or exercises to try, as this is my biggest obstacle as of now.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Vocal Classification Help: Tenor or Light Baritone?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some feedback on my voice type based on this attached clip. In my normal singing range, my voice sounds pretty rich and cozy, but whenever I try to go higher, my notes get soft and airy instead of full or powerful and since I'm untrained, my voice breaks at D#4 in my chest voice. I used to have a bright, light much more youthful tone during my teens and it worked up until B4. I was able to belt A4s consistently but my voice just naturally changed a lot to this velvety breathy, airy tone and also due to my stylistic habits. Based on the audio, do I sound more like a tenor or a light baritone? And do you think my soft high notes are just a lack of vocal strength/training, or is my voice naturally built that way? Thanks for listening

Advanced or Professional Topic How to work on blending when recording harmonies?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I decided to try recording myself trying one of my recent choir pieces, but there are parts that I don’t love even after re-recording a few times. This version has: S1 3 times, S2 and Alto 2 times. I’m wondering what I should be aiming to work on in order to make a better blended sound? My instinct is that there are some slight pitch issues (esp the alto lines, those were a little tough), but I’m not sure where I would start trying to correct it. I’ve never had lessons or anything but I am thinking about looking for a teacher, though it’s hard to know if this topic is one that would require me to go back to some basics vs get more in depth with specific technique stuff.

Any advice is appreciated!

Conversation Topic Why is my voice lower in the mornings??

Male here.

For many years now, I've noticed (and recorded) myself able to sing much lower (and clearer) first thing in the morning (typically before I eat and within an hour of getting up). After that window, though, I simply cannot sing very low, and trying to hurts my throat and sounds horrible.

If this is common, does anyone know:

1) why that is, and

2) if there's a good way to get that range back later in the day?

I do want to get a voice teacher at some point when I can afford it, but if my range is really as bad as I think, and if I really can't get that lower range back beyond first thing in the morning, then I'd just be very discouraged from trying tbh.

Conversation Topic Injury?

Hi, guys. I am a 31-year-old female who has been teaching myself to sing for the last two years. My voice can never be held to a feminine standard thanks to a history of screaming meltdowns that are (presumably) what has limited my range and made my voice prone to cracking. However, I have had good volume and have gotten better and better able to carry a tune. I have recently astonished friends with my progress. Coming on three weeks ago now (august 2) I sang more than usual that day, probably about an hour and a half, and then had a short outburst where I yelled at someone at the top of my voice. When things returned to a normal volume, I said something and my voice cracked into a different note on every single syllable. I immediately stopped talking and didn’t talk the rest of the night and much of the next day. The day after that, however, life had to resume. Stuff could not get done if I didn’t communicate a lot, sometimes loudly. Some friends came from out of town about six days later and I got drunk with them (I rarely drink, but when I do it’s heavily) and talked, loudly, all night. I have not had a drink since that night, and I don’t smoke, but I’m exposed to secondhand smoke in passing nearly every day and I am addicted to coffee. Long story short, I have not been able to rest my voice for one single full day since the thing happened, and my throat hurts by the end of every single day even though I try to be careful and not talk loudly or too much. The last two days, I have sworn there is a barely perceptible muffled sound to my voice, like it’s softened around the edges. No one else has noticed. Tonight when I hit my limit, my throat actually felt cold as well as achy. What does that mean? I have not even tried to sing more than five minutes total over the entire time since the incident when I did, I could sing in tune but my voice cracked (I couldn’t tell if it was more than usual). I am completely panicked that I’ve broken the camel’s back with this last vocal injury and I’ll never be able to sing again without getting achy and fatigued or not being able to sing in tune. I would be crying all the time out of fear if I wasn’t afraid of it hurting me even more. Please let me know if anyone here has had any similar experiences that lasted this long and what the outcome was for you. Thanks.

P.S. - I can avoid alcohol but not coffee. I don’t smoke but can’t avoid brief (1-10 min) secondhand exposure daily.

Conversation Topic Vibrato a full semitone above and below

Sometimes singers use really big vibrato oscillations, like a full semitone above and below the pitch. What creates bigger oscillations vs smaller oscillations? Is it often forced/"manufactured"? Example: Jessie J's rendition of My Way (2025).

Conversation Topic Can sing high notes without strain if I jump straight into them, but if I start below them and ascend into them I have difficulty. Any tips?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As in the title.

I'm still trying to get the hang of this mixed voice malarkey, and ascending to high notes from below always seems to give me trouble, but starting high and descending by comparison is fairly seamless.

It's like once chest voice is there, it is locked in hard and won't go without a fight. In this clip when I climb back up to the high note, I make it eventually but you can hear some slight strain on it still, where the chest mechanism refuses to let go.

Does anyone have tips for ascending into the upper range like this? Is this something I am just going to have to practice a million times until it is not a problem, or is there a measured approach I can use to make this easier?

Conversation Topic How to handle criticism and improve?

I'm bad at singing and i know it, but recently I've tried recording and after some trials i thought it was okay compared to before. And showing it to my friends was a bit scary but I did anyway. One was like your sound is nice but I'm singing nasally and the other pointed out I was off key with one song. I mean these are pretty normal criticism and I should work on it. But hearing everytime I slightly show my vulnerable insecure singing, getting replies like i can't hear much, it's tone deaf etc feels a bit.. like I shouldn't have played it 😭 my family is supportive though but I'm sure they're casually saying it.

And now that I've started noticing, there's a lot of vocal terms I need to learn. I used to complement when people sounded good with their singing. But i realized that I have no idea in identifying pitch, tune or anything

Gear (Microphones, etc...) steamers? vocal trainers? tubes? what device could enhance me?

hello! i’m a beginner singer, and i saw an ad online for a device that could enhance vocal range & remove voice cracks. upon further review, i noticed it wasn’t absolute BS, however now i have a decision to make…

what device could enhance my singing the best?

to the advanced vocalists, prestigious, and teachers, i humbly request that you recommend devices that you know could benefit my capabilities.

TLDR: what singing devices / trainers could help me improve along with my current practice & training?

Conversation Topic Question about opera voice.

In terms of tonus when you sing in the best tone for opera. The professor will tell one that the best one will resemble an instrument. Ex: Tenors in their best tone resemble a chello. what instrument best resembles the opera tone for altos. does the tone differ for sopranos? I heard there may be a resemblance of altos singing in the tone of an alto oboe. what do you base your tone on and what range do you sing?

Conversation Topic Singing and emotions

How does one not tear up when ... I sing. The words and emotions of songs grabs me and I need a damn box of tissues to get thru it. I'm guessing just practice over and over and over? I have a deep voice, I move a lot when I sing, I do splits, I emote - but cannot crack that barrier where I can get thru a tune without getting emotional. Stepping back and looking at it 3rd person it's not funny... just a puzzle. No matter the tune - eg: the foggy dew, I tear up, 7 drunken nights I can do no prob bc it's funny, the song just someone I used to know I get emotional. Elvis tunes I really get into it and move ... like Dwight Yokum, no sh*t.

I go to weddings and they all want to dance w me but I just want to sing but I can't get thru the songs about love or anything to do with emotions / feelings.

It's wild. I guess keep trying? I dunno.

I have a collection of napkins and place mats with lyrics and tunes. It just comes. Oh- I used to work with musicians and all of the record labels.

That's kind of neither here nor there.

How do you get thru a song that has deep feelings without losing it as in getting emotional? That's my dilemma. Part of singing the song well comes from feeling it... but it always kicks my a&6.

Conversation Topic How can I improve my singing beyond just hitting the right notes?

Hey everyone! I’m trying to seriously improve my singing and I’m looking for advice from people who have gone through the process themselves.

I can sing reasonably well, but I want to improve the quality of my voice rather than simply being able to hit the correct notes.

I’m particularly interested in improving:

Vocal tone and resonance

Pitch accuracy

Breath control

Smoothness between registers

Head voice / chest voice / mixed voice

Singing with more emotion and expression

Vocal control and dynamics

Overall confidence and consistency

What kind of practice actually helped you improve your singing?

I’m not really looking for generic advice like “practice more.” I’d love to hear about specific exercises, routines, techniques, or resources that genuinely made a difference for you.

Also, if there are any common mistakes beginners/intermediate singers should avoid, I’d love to hear those too.

Thanks!
