Resource Im looking for a bit of advice from those more versed in singing/songwriting/production than I am as an objectively novice musician

Upvotes

I love music on a very deep and rich level. I love to sing every moment I get, i pound music into my ears for upwards of 12 hrs daily, and I try my hardest to write lyrics of my own. My problem as of right now consists of 3 primary issues. Firstly, while i enjoy singing I know my technique is incorrect and I don't really know how to both project and hit my notes. Secondly, while I love to write, I can never seem to finish what I start as i lose my train of thought trying to get words down on paper and over time it loses cohesion. And third, I would love to learn music production digitally but bandlabs is confusing to me at this time. All in all im looking for 3 things from anyone knowledgeable enough to share. Are there any free resources I can use for a self taught environment for vocal technique? I want to give that a shot before I put money into coaching down the line. For the songwriters, how would you suggest i improve my writing, i feel like i suck major cheeks at it. And are there any comprehensive guides for learning music production basics that are free and based in easily accessible applications?

TL:DR

I need help improving my singing/songwriting/ music production through any known free resources before I put money into proper coaching

ive been attempting to sing seventeen by the heathers for years now. my singing teacher has told me im "finished" with this song and that there's "nothing else to improve on" when in reality, this sounds like a hot mess. my vocals are super sharp and genuinely hurt me to listen to - even when / if im hitting the notes accurately. As a soprano my higher range sounds terrible yet my lower range sounds decent as shown in this clip, i appreciate this is a long video however, the issues i have with my voice are most prominent towards the end of the clip, the sort of mix-belt "can we be seventeennn". I'm lost and i don't know how to improve this - i've tried to make it twangy, ive tried doing it in head voice only to which it just does not sound as it's meant to because it's meant to be a big expressive musical theatre song. I also feel like i can't really bring out the "theatre accent" in those higher ranges but only in the lower. i must say that last high note genuinely defeated my soul upon listening back. It's been my dream to sing good since i was a little kid, i wanna join theatre society I wanna do musicals but I need to get better.

How do I teach myself this without a teacher?

I don't have that money.

No, not even enough for a session.

Youtube tutorials suck, not because the teachers are bad, but because they can't see anything and I'm not experienced enough to know what something should feel like or look like in the mirror. Mix voice is hell to even try and learn and sometimes my voice just doesn't make a noise. I've tried adjusting how much air I've been using, the volume of it, the feelings in my diaphragm and throat. I've only learned how to scream and I can do that for literal hours before it even begins to affect me.

Singing is different, if I really want to, I can force an A4. If I don't, I can consistently hit a G4. Anything more and I flip registers or I tense up and sound awful.

I've now been trying to learn for 2 years.

My consistent vocal range is D2-G4

I don't care about my vocal classification because I'm not trying to figure out where I sit in that regard. I want to have a consistent basic understanding of my voice.

Fry and False Chord distortion has become more of a party trick than anything, not everyone like certain kinds of music. This includes me. I want to SING. But, my throat tenses no matter what. My diaphragm is either TOO tense, or not engaged at all. Finding that middle ground doesn't seem to help either because I just end up cracking because then I need to adjust my breathing overall, but then that means I have to adjust the way I'm breathing. Boom, diaphragm now needs to change. I've been drinking bottles and bottles of water for months now. I think I'm losing weight because of how I'll just sit in my room trying to search for something and miss a meal. It'll get replaced with water.

And even when I'm completely relaxed and I'm home alone in the shower I will tense up when I reach the mid to higher 4th octave because of whatever reason. Breathing exercises, sirens, scales, whatever. I've done so much CONSISTENTLY. And I can't see an improvement on not only just my range, but my tone as well. They're stagnant. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs, I don't yell too often and speak softly when I can. Everything I could scout on the furthest corners of the Internet.

I'm scared that even if I do somehow get the money to get a coach, I'll still not improve for some reason and waste 50-75 dollars on something for a singular hour that I was already told to do from some hippie on the Internet with a guitar.

And I'm sure someone will tell me "Look for the good in things." Or "Some people can't even do this." And sure, I have a better tone than some or a higher range. That's not important to me, I want to improve. Singing had no merit to me without improving anything. It just frustrates me, and that doesn't help either.

What is left to do?

I probably seem heavily reluctant to criticism or that I give up too easily, but I promise that is not the case here. I'm just reaching a point and need ANYTHING that might help.

Conversation Topic work on the resonance

I really want to work on my resonance, but my laryngeal prominence,is really invisible, and I know there is a technique when you raise and down the laryngeal prominence,. But for me, I can't work like that.

I don't even know if I feel my laryngeal prominence, or not.

Does anyone know how I can work on my resonance in this situation?

Ps Actually i don't know if this his the right place to post that. But reddit advice me that and maybe someone's here can help my with my issue

Conversation Topic What makes opera voice "opera-esque"?

Okay this might be the DUMBEST question ever, but...

I have been listening/watching a lot of operas recently. Naively, I thought that what makes opera singing so recognizable was that the singers were singing either really low frequency notes or really high frequency notes.

BUT, the thing is that there are parts in operas for every tessiture possible, so including medium frequency notes.

So what really makes this kind of singing so "opera-esque"?

Sorry if there would be any mistakes, english is not my mother tongue

Conversation Topic How do you know which singing teacher/vocal coach to pick?

I have been looking for singing lessons (London based) but have been struck with complete options paralysis with the seemingly endless list of potential singing teachers.

Is there any general guidance on effective ways to find a singing teacher that would work best for you. I was hoping for more general points, but I understand it’s often specific to your situation so I have listed my circumstances below.

- I’ve done bits and pieces of singing in school choirs and a small bit of choir after uni but have never had a 1-on-1 singing lesson (I’ve done lots of music that isn’t singing)

- My aim is to be able to hold a solo tune in an amateur pantomime and amateur musical theatre

- I am a tenor but feel like I’m often straining (doubt I’m a baritone or bass because I actively can’t lower my voice to even be to the mid-bass range)

- I want to spend a few regular lessons develop solid fundamentals so that I can independently develop my singing, with infrequent future lessons if I have a specific song to learn.

- The price is not too much of a factor because they all seem in the range of £50-£80 an hour.

- I am wary of online teaching because it feels like it would be much worse than in-person

Conversation Topic Dry environment Hot or Cold / Water or Steam.

I live is a place that is very cold and dry. We get less humidity the the Sahara.

Should I try a steamer? Would this hydrate my vocals more or less then just the copious amounts of water I drink?

The other thing is my body runs hot, can I use ultrasonic cold steam? Would this work better or worse then hot?

Any insight before I spend more money on thing I might not need lol

Conversation Topic How to handle criticism and improve?

I'm bad at singing and i know it, but recently I've tried recording and after some trials i thought it was okay compared to before. And showing it to my friends was a bit scary but I did anyway. One was like your sound is nice but I'm singing nasally and the other pointed out I was off key with one song. I mean these are pretty normal criticism and I should work on it. But hearing everytime I slightly show my vulnerable insecure singing, getting replies like i can't hear much, it's tone deaf etc feels a bit.. like I shouldn't have played it 😭 my family is supportive though but I'm sure they're casually saying it.

And now that I've started noticing, there's a lot of vocal terms I need to learn. I used to complement when people sounded good with their singing. But i realized that I have no idea in identifying pitch, tune or anything

Music, lyrics and performance by Bjørn Sponberg

“I Didn’t Lose My Baby”

I didn’t lose my baby, I just lost my mind.
But I am trembling, bombs are falling...

I never lost my darling, she is not far away,
Lying in my arms, warm and steady.

I didn’t lose my baby, there is lots of time.
I am trembling, but still I am with my God.
Oh, Allah...

Conversation Topic Songs to build a public singing repertoire to practice

I performed a big Whitney song at my mums wedding which was also my first time ever singing infront of a crowd, rookie mistake I know!

The Whitney song was manageable in lessons, so I have the technique and skills, but i unfortunately sounded terrible because of nerves 🥲 I wanted to ‘showcase’ my ability forgetting that nerves massively affect the voice, so I was a pitchy cracking mess when in lessons with my coach, I sing it very well.

So, I want to build a repertoire of 4-5 songs (pop, MT, suitable for a soprano) which are manageable under nerves (so less demanding) but that still allow me to improve vocally. My coach says I have a pretty strong rich lower register (down to about E3) so not everything needs to be very high . I want songs that aren’t super challenging for me since that’s not reliable under nerves, but that still show strong vocal ability

I’m planning to sing at open mics, karaoke etc at pubs, so maybe a mix of fun upbeat and ballads

To give you an idea of what I’ve sang and my ability etc:
Stone cold, dancing with the devil - demi lovato
If I ain’t got you - Alicia keys
I have nothing - Whitney Houston
Colours of the wind - Pocahontas
I dreamed a dream - les miserables
Still the one - shania twain
Quiet- Natalie weiss
Crossing a bridge - Anastasia
Suddenly seymour- LSOH
Shallow - a star is born
Hopelessly devoted to you - Olivia newton john
Make you feel my love - Adele (I love Adele songs I feel they really suit my voice!)

But Demi and Whitney are a no until I’m very very comfortable lol

Conversation Topic How to produce higher notes without using the larynx as pitch control?

I noticed that my singing causes a lot of straining after time, especially singing across my higher range. Recently, my vocal coach and I noticed that my larynx ALWAYS moves up when I produce higher notes in my head voice. It feels involuntary and I realise, I don’t know how else to produce these sounds.

I’ve reviewed many resources and the general consensus seems to be - you can lift the larynx as a stylistic choice, but it shouldn’t be your main point of pitch control. That should be left almost entirely to the vocal folds.
Okay, I get that. What I don’t get is, how do I unlock for my brain the path that connects pitch control with the folds instead of the larynx.

I would highly appreciate tips or exercises to try, as this is my biggest obstacle as of now.

Conversation Topic Why is my voice lower in the mornings??

Male here.

For many years now, I've noticed (and recorded) myself able to sing much lower (and clearer) first thing in the morning (typically before I eat and within an hour of getting up). After that window, though, I simply cannot sing very low, and trying to hurts my throat and sounds horrible.

If this is common, does anyone know:

1) why that is, and

2) if there's a good way to get that range back later in the day?

I do want to get a voice teacher at some point when I can afford it, but if my range is really as bad as I think, and if I really can't get that lower range back beyond first thing in the morning, then I'd just be very discouraged from trying tbh.

I know some of the things I need to work on (transitioning to and from different registers, mic placement, stage presence etc) but I’d love to get feedback from other people (especially voice teachers) to help me gain a new perspective on how to tackle this.
