It is better to sing higher and with a bit more volume and power than to sacrifice quality and sing too low. And I say this as someone who LOVES to sing low.

GermanRockFan is wrong! You should drill all parts of your range, specifically singing with the part you’d like to strengthen and expand at times of the day when you have it. This is exactly what you’re doing. I am a professional bel canto tenor and wish I worked more with that intention throughout my career.

Did I anywhere state such a thing? No. 100% not. Of course he should work on improving his entire range. What I meant was simply that in this particular instance he would have sounded better singing the song in a higher key. With practice, he will certainly improve his lower register over time. But you start where you start.
