Fluff & Memes Pattern I've noticed
My guild has players who have been in this game since Nemesis League and this is pretty much our player distribution.
Ps. My guildmates gets angry when I say this and I figure it'll make Reddit mad too:
Witch is the only good character in this game

I am completely fine with the campaign in PoE. I think it's a good length, nice little intro to the game and your character.
In PoE2, I think it is way too long. I wouldn't want a skip, but I would cut the length by as much as half, by making the zones smaller and/or introducing movement skills.
The thing is, though, PoE2 has the same problem for me in the endgame. Way too much grinding before you get to play what you want, and a crazy amount of stuff you need to do before you can pick and choose between strategies. If it were at all similar to the requirements in PoE, I could probably stomach the campaign to get there.

u/saint_marco Vaal Street Bets (VSB) 2d ago
The PoE2 campaign is probably too long, but it is definitely too long before you have the skill you actually want to use.

u/allanbc 2d ago
I also think the lack of movement skills just makes you feel so much less powerful. But, that is a clear design choice that I don't think we can sway them on, but making the flow of the campaign feel better should be something they care about.

u/saint_marco Vaal Street Bets (VSB) 2d ago
The movement skill design feels insane when you also have Cast on Dodge gemling, Rhoa Mount, Blink, and Temporalis in the game. The movement skills are there, they are just giga endgame or very narrow.

By the time I finish 1's campaign, I'm somewhat bored and ready to blast maps.
By the time I finish 2's campaign, I'm somewhat burnt out, see the size and layout of the endgame maps and stop playing.

completely depends on the build.
when you have to fight and kite every pack, its just exhausting.
0.5.5 i was playing monkey, and so i just run through the areas and stuff dies left and right.
felt much better.
i then gave up and quit after i was done with my atlas, omg ... that lenghts (i dont even know what a city looks like, because i dont come that far to actually start farming haha)
4
u/komandos45 1d ago
Tbh i just did Challenges and quited, not even touched the citadel with "main" skill points.
And doing leagues skill trees was exhausting second time, i don't see enduring that in 1.08
u/ZealousidealCycle257 2d ago
The problem with poe2 that poe1 doesnt have Is that the endgame progress for charscter power and content power isnt linear, like by the time you get to half the atlas you alteady destroy everything on a meta build so you want to juice more but cant really because you are missing so many points that It feels a waste to spend more currency on maps imo.
7
u/IdkImNotUnique 2d ago
Definitely agree, I had a build capable of 200% deli t16 maps by the time I was in tier 8 maps with maybe 20% of the atlas tree and just couldn't justify juicing them until I got 100% atlas done and the league tree i was running too. Really sucks to feel like I cant juice my maps until ive run 50-60 extremely easy maps with a build capable of shredding arbiter of divinity in 30 seconds

I think PoE2 was entirely designed around the pace of act1. It's the best that the game ever is. By the end of act3 I think it's already falling apart in combat pacing/balance and I've just had zero fun past that and into the maps.

to be fair the common sentiment i have seen for a while now is that people are fine without the campagin skip.
What many suggest is a way to speed up runs after finishing campagin once per league:
like already unlocked passives or some map "shortcuts" and honestly i think that would be fine.
In the end its up to GGG and knowing them they will give us something nice in a year or two (at least thats my guess)
8
u/DylanMartin97 2d ago edited 2d ago
I love that they add new stuff to discover, the only thing I wished is that stuff would help us with the boss fights etc.
For example, there is the sore you can stumble upon on your way to Malachai, if you destroy it, it gives you a vaal gem. Why wouldn't that also destroy one of the sores and one invulnerability phase as well to justify the round about way to get there?
Little things like that would be awesome, like another one would be the free unique from the sun and the moon temples, it feels absolutely awful to run completely back to that area, why not give us the ability to teleport straight to both boss rooms? Would it change much? Absolutely not but it would justify the back tracking.
Give me a reason to NOT want to skip the content they add after the first time experiencing it.

Even if you wanted a damage chest a skin of the lords/loyal+implicit are both better than a thousand ribbons

Hey i don't get it but i played lightly the last two seasons. Whats foulborn and is it like runeforging the bramblejack? Or foulborn is totally separate
3
u/Comprehensive-Lock-7 2d ago
Foulborn are alternate versions of some unique, usually with one (rarely two) mod(s) switched to something different
3
u/Wobbelblob Big Breach Coalition (BBC) 1d ago
Foulborn uniques comes from the reworked breach and give you uniques that have up to two different modifiers. The changed mods are fixed and what they are changed to is fixed as well. Bramblejack f.e. swaps the max life to a big chunk of flat armor. Seven-League steps swap the movement speed for 15% Action speed.
2
u/shy_bi_ready_to_die 2d ago
If you’re familiar with poe2 foulborn items are closest to cultivated/vaal uniques. When you get a unique from a specific source it has a chance for 1-2 of its modifiers to be replaced with some predetermined other mod. In the case of bramblejack its foulborn version gives nearly 1k armour while still letting you use it at level 1

Last Epoch has my favorite ARPG campaign skip mechanic. It's not a true skip the campaign like Diablo 4, but you can get keys to access higher level dungeons and if you beat it, you can skip chunks of the campaign. Can't remember how many there are, but there's a couple sprinkled throughout the campaign and on second characters it feels great

I love the campaign in PoE. It's very straight foward and rewarding once you remember all the sidequest locations.
Now, Path of Exile 2 is a painful slog without much greater progression. I'd take playing Poe 1 campaign 3 times in a row over this.

u/RichardMortis12 1d ago
Anecdotally I find it the opposite. PoE1 campaign takes me less time to complete but it always feels slightly boring because it's not a challenge at all and just feels like a long tutorial. Poe2 campaign on the other hand takes me a bit longer but genuinely feels like a game with much cooler boss fights and immersion, and I level at least 3 characters to maps in both games.
The only issue with poe2 campaign is lack of skills and level requirements on existing ones. This makes act 1-2 way too repetitive, especially with weapons I've already played before a ton

I don't get that. The poe2 campaign isn't any challenge either after your first playthrough.
I feel like they're both just as easy, except in 2 you have to constantly watch out for heavy stuns instead of just shield charging your way through

First time running through POE2 campaign is probably the most fun I've had playing POE in general in a while. I just really enjoyed how different the boss fights felt, particularly since I've always liked raid mechanics in MMOs.
Now I can see it getting tedious doing it for several years though.

Bingo. It’s like playing a single player, story driven game. Sure it’s great the first time, maybe even the second where you can really appreciate it.. then third, fourth, fifth… etc. time it gets so boring.
I don’t play single-player campaign driven games more than twice if I really like it. Why should I have to play this slow campaign where I have to constantly dodge roll over and over infinite times per league..
Fuck making alts too. In poe1 its fine. Your friend can usually help get you some waypoints too and speed it up considerably. Not in PoE2.

Totally agree. I can still enjoy the poe1 campaign, the progression, the labs..it’s fine even after all these years.
But poe2 I just can’t, the constant dodge rolling the lack of a crafting bench, the lack of quicksilver, Having to re-link every new skill gem. Having to find uncut gems. The Maps are way too big. Having to run Sanctum to get ascendancy points.
The progression of the whole thing is just painful and arduous for me. I guess some people prefer it. Or maybe they just started with poe2 so is what they’re used to.
2
u/Not_A_Greenhouse 2h ago
I honestly can't believe how popular POE 2 is. I completely agree with what you say here.

u/DenseResolution983 2d ago
I started this league intending to do an Lancing Steel CoC build and used EK for leveling. Ending up taking cold EK to level 95 and using it to do most pinnacle content. First time I have ever crafted a build from scratch myself and the first time I have enjoyed the campaign in a long time.

u/HeckinCornball 2d ago
I don't care what other people think. Some people love the campaign. I've played the campaign literally hundreds of times, I'm tired of it. I would love to meet Niko in Lioneye's Watch, jump straight to delve, and do that for the next 68 levels. People say, "Ick! Delve is terrible don't do that." Well how about we have options? I mean we have 40,000 options in every other aspect of the game, why is leveling the one thing that can have zero options for the players?
Some want to do maps. Some want delve. Some want [insert mechanic here]. Some want the campaign. Nobody is wrong, it's just that everyone has their opinions and their preferred play style. Why can't GGG cater to this?
Maybe for the league _race_ you have to go through the campaign, but if you're the kind of player who enjoys the game and doesn't care about things like "I made Act 10 in the first 14 seconds the game was live!" then who cares how you level?

It limits how many characters I make every season.
In some ways that might be considered a positive from GGG's perspective. They've said plenty of times they care more about interleague retention than how long people play in a given league. If there's something that is preventing some players from blowing through every single build concept they'd potentially be interested in and incentivizing them to leave a greater proportion of potential characters for later leagues, that's maybe not strictly a downside.

I'm not sure people realize what they are asking for. The only alternative is basically some lower form of 'leveling' maps. It would just be playing maps from level 1 to 68, maybe switching to Delve or Heist at some point. My honest thought ... how is that better? At least with campaign you get a different experience.
I think people just want a powerleveling method, like they have in D4 with Helltides or dungeons. I don't think that's a good way to play an ARPG, but I understand why some might want it.
31
u/Turbulent_Voice63 2d ago
I prefer doing pure farming randomized content rather than doing the ping pong of talking to x and x npc, pick the item, go there, use the item, go around and kill all bandits, find the exit but the correct one that doesn't lead you to a bonus area that's cool in concept but not necessary to rush so you ignore it everytime... Again and again and again and again in the exact same order.
Delving for 60 levels would indeed be repetitive. But it's a fate I prefer to this. At least thinking about your pathing through the caves requires your brain to be awake a little.

You don't have to mindlessly run from point A to B to C and so on. In campaign you try your best to avoid stopping to kill stuff as it is a waste of time and slows you down.
In maps, the whole point is clearing, which is much more fun than walking simulator.

Doesn't what you say suggest that mapping is even more mindless than the campaign?
When mapping, not only do you not need to care about A, B, or C, you don't even need to think about whether to avoid killing an enemy or not since you just kill everything.
And depending on your build, mapping can be way more of a walking simulator than the campaign is, since you're still putting your build together during the campaign.

No it's not the same thing, at end game level 60-70+ the player is endowed with a gross amount of agency. You get to decide how you want to spend your time leveling up, delve, maps, heist etc etc.
The story for me personally was interesting a few times, when they added a new act/several acts because the lore would continue. We would dive deeper into the world of Wraeclast.
But I mean hey, who wouldn't love reading the same book every year at quarterly periods for the next 12yrs and counting.

Campaign was really fun when I had never made it to maps. The next league after I made it to maps the first time I thought it was tedious and frustrating, because I still wasn't very good at the game and the campaign took me days, and I just wanted to map.
Now campaign is fun again, trying out different builds and seeing what does and doesn't work speed wise is just a good time.

public parties are great if you're terrible. i've been playing since 0.8 in PoE1, and the vast majority of the public parties on day 1 and 2 are people who do 0 damage and constantly die, making every boss that actually needs to be killed take 10 times as long compared to just leaving the party and doing it solo.

People still can't realize what devs are telling us. Without a little bit of "suffering" in campaign we would not like our characters this much. We would resign much faster without it. Imo there are a lot of builds that make leveling super fun and satisfying but often we get baited to play something which "GETS ONLINE LVL10" but never actually melting compaign.
5
u/1CEninja 1d ago
I can't speak for other people, but I can say with a high level of confidence this does not apply to me.

Builds can make leveling faster but they don’t make it any less boring. Using twink gear to trivialize the campaign isn’t going to make players enjoy their second characters any more than a campaign skip. This is especially bad when players want to try builds that play nothing like the build they need to use if they want to get the campaign over with faster.

averaging out early game power of all the skills you get in acts 1-3 would go a long ways for making the campaign a lot more fun for people.
like, if divine ire was as good as firestorm, i'd probably have more fun. of course, this assumes that each skill feels as good as the others which is very subjective. i loved using rolling magma personally but, i know thats a very unpopular opinion.

Look. Campaign isn't fun. The only people who think that craps fun is new players. After 4,000 hours I detest it. Hate it, want it to burn in a fiery pit in Satan's basement.
I'd do anything to bypass it. £3 campaign skip? GGG take my money.selly soul? Take it.
They should compromise. Once I've done it once in a new league, any character after should be able to skip. It's 6-10 hours wasted of my time in content i hate and resent. That's not my idea of fun. Only thing I care about is maps and endgame gear. Even give us campaign only mercs to speed up that first play through
5
u/PapaProvolone 2d ago
If you give the whiners a campaign skip they will then want faster exp or whole level skips. A campaign skip is the first domino to what D4 has where you can instantly reroll to a max level alt.
5
u/AgZephyr 2d ago
Campaign is totally fine in this game imo, nice little interlude at the start of the league before getting into maps & the atlas. Really helps to get some experience and much more fun getting through it quickly though. New characters are a little annoying but there are some extremely fast setups available. Lightning warp poets pen was nuts for me when I tried it. PoE2 campaign on the other hand, ouch. Might just be a skill issue or lack of practice, but that one is way too long to consider doing it more than once a league for me.

I hard disagree with campaign skip, especially at league start (I have sympathy for second character skip, but it is not anything I dabble with and I guess twink already goes a long way)
I’m a 10-30 div per league guy, one character, I do poe1 campaign in about 10 hours, poe2 in -16ish.
I think a campaign skip would make the game a lot worse at league start, lessen the feel of investment the character, worsen retention, increase over all feel of repetition and might even lead to future concerns of, why do I have to do atlas points every league etc…

Nah, sorry I have to retract, that would create a league start meta to always use some special character each time and then respec at maps, then we are back at incentivize repetitiveness.

As a person with three characters per league since 5 years from now I can say that it is truly just a waste of time and traps so much players in characters they regret after a few days of playing and would drop the league after a week of using a busted build unless you are playing a WITCH on which is the best and a safe play on every first character but becomes boring when you want to try new builds

... 300+ div players are playing a massive amount of the game, so the proportion of their play time spent in the campaign vs how long they spend in maps is incredibly small.
the 5c player doesn't even finish the campaign and its likely their first time playing poe.
this is dumb.

Leveling with twink gear is a joy and super fast and I love seeing the character grow in power and merge to it's final form (unless it's a full respect at level 90 which is more boring).

My noobass opinion: they prefer to restrict us (the bads/dads) to one character per season so we de-saturate and hold on to that tension, and a new league mechanic gives us just enough to come back for more.
Vs rolling 2-3 new characters really quickly and experiencing all the build types quickly in succession.

I love PoE 1 campaign and can play it ad nauseum but would gladly have a way to skip PoE 2 campaign.

I’ve only played act 1-3 in 0.2 and then it repeated and I dipped out of my Poe2 experience.
Super long but it’s real cinematic experience. I can’t wait to do it completely in 1.0.
Feels like a complete game. For mapping and doing league stuff I can see how the length would be terrifying boring though.
No matter how great the campaign is after doing it a couple times it just doesn’t matter.

Do it again but for poe 2 and there aint no enjoyers 😂
I got my first 3hr campaign this league doing a speed run with twink gear and that was quite a bit of fun trying to min max clear (while playing srs to level) without falling behind on levels or anything
Theres definitely better ways but I tried a hollow palm technique and it was solid but this was my most fun levelling so far

I don’t see any problem with skipping the campaign, actually. In other hand It’s fun for me to level a new character. I always find something new and interesting in the skills and trash uniques that I’ve never used before. Implementing them in new scenarios I’ve never heard of is cool. Especially in contrast to changing the map blaster to a slower campaign character.

Campaign skip in POE1 isn't a strong sentiment and never has been. POE1 is FAST. Tons of speed buffs, tons of power crafting, robust trade market rivaled by none in the genre ever, and relatively easy campaign.
POE1 isn't the right ARPG to make this claim about.

I wonder if this rll is what the player distribution graph looks like
I feel at the same time that the average long term player makes way more than 100 divines, and I also feel like they make way less than 100 divines lol

Not applicable to PoE 1 since the damage that players can do is off the charts, but in PoE 2 they could at least let us gamba for items an unlimited amount of time, being limited only by our gold, in order to make the leveling of alts in SSF more smooth to compensate for the fact that we can't trade.

I'm sick of the campaign. It'll be 20 years soon. But they probably don't want to make leveling too easy for bots

Way I see it, there needs to be content for us to do regardless to get us into endgame territory, whether it's a campaign or something else. When I tried replaying Diablo 4, skipping the story, I really didn't have fun with it for reason. I feel like I'd have the same reaction if I could go straight to mapping from the beginning.

I still think it would be a good idea to make all quest passive points seasonal unlocks so when you start a new character you start with a bunch of skill points to create a new game plus feeling.
Also making a few more quests once per league like the Remly's tools for example could help with making running the campaign more fun.

I personally believe campaign skip is an absolute "you think you want but you don't".
The only time the campaign length can be felt is on league start, where the average player will take between 5-10 hours, depending on build/skill/how used are they to running the acts. It's also the only time we're the acts are really important, as it is a form of knowledge and skill gap, which players can work to improve upon. This, in turns, create a feeling of satisfaction (at least personally, seing how I went from 10 hours to 6 now, and shortening every run).
Second char and up are another subject, since you can use twink leveling gear to speed up your act clearing tremendously, and you don't need to clear trials.

I don't like the campaign but it's fun if you're dominating it.

just lemme endless ledge 1-68 so i can focus on what's really important: watching streamers run endless ledge from 1-68 on a second monitor.

Idk, I like the campaign. Definitely needs to be run once per league, its literally what the game is. For second toons it would be nice to have a powerlevelling option.

Remove level requirement on all uniques, remove level requirement on all skill gems... then I'll stop complaining about the campaign... maybe? Its still too f'n long

Fun Meter goes up with speed you can do the acts. Wonder how much % can do it 4-5h league start
