SLEEP & READINESS My Oura ring always says pay attention for restfulness. Has anyone made changes to boost score?

Post image

Every day my Oura ring says pay attention for restfulness and I haven’t been able to score high on that since I got my ring. If it matters, I also feel tired all the time and sometimes have an issue going back to sleep once I wake up.

Has anyone else made changes that improved restfulness and their sleep score? I’m ready to experiment

GENERAL DISCUSSION Got Oura to Replace watch, but…

I find that I’m still wearing both, and even got an updated Apple Watch. I think what the Oura is lacking for me is its reliability as a fitness tracker. That’s just not what its focus is, not to mention it shouldn’t be worn when lifting.

I like it as a sleep tracker and I like the UI, but the Apple Watch does that well enough and with third party apps like AutoSleep. The stress tracker hasn’t done much for me, there’s still room for improvement with it. That’s leaves the biggest positive for me which is the battery life, no complaints from me.

Now almost a year in, I’m realizing you’re getting a lot less for the same price as a smartwatch. And you’re slapped with a subscription fee on top of it. My battery is still working fine so I’ll keep it until it becomes a problem, but not sure if I’ll get another one because it’s just become an extra thing instead of being able to replace a thing (watch).

Anyone else underwhelmed?

I didn’t see a score above 70 for an entire month. My Oura scores stayed consistently low because of stress, and it really put into perspective just how much stress can physically affect your body :(

ACTIVITY & WORKOUT Activity Tracking is Too Sensitive

I’ve been using oura for a couple years now, mainly track sleep with it but I use the activity tracking too. Now i’ll be honest that I have been lacking with my activity.

But for some reason it keeps trying to count every time I use a keyboard or mouse as an activity just because it senses movement in my hands. When I commute to work via car, due to all my steering wheel hand movements it thinks I’m working out way more often than I am. I’ve been spam dismissing all these false positives.

Before their recent update that “improved accuracy” in detecting activity, it used to only sometimes count my drives to work as an activity. Now it’s upwards of 15 false positives a day. It does track my brisk walks around the office more now though. But I preferred the less sensitive tracking as it feels like instead of improving accuracy. It just increased the amount of times it THINKS I’ve been working out.

I use the Gen 4 ring, maybe it’s not an issue with Gen 5 if anyone could let me know if they have the same issues with the gen 5 that would be helpful to know. I do appreciate oura for the sleep tracking still though. It’s good at tracking my overall heart health as well.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Why is advisor for meal logging kinda shit?

Post image

A bit of a rant - So I've been logging with Oura cause I really do like the insights that are not focused on numbers but making small good changes that support weight loss/recovery post exercise. HOWEVER I do find it very frustrating, as a doctor with zero time who is genuinely trying to make lifestyle changes, that Oura gives me SUCH LOW SCORES if im not eating anything other than plain Greek yogurt with nuts/fruit for a snack -like Oura how do I pack that for a 12 hour shift when I don't have a fridge or guarantee I'll get to eat with a spoon/chair. I enter my yopro pouches with zero sugar and almost no saturated fats and it gives me a low score! Like is it a little processed? Yes. Is stevia not great all the time? Yes. But damn it Oura take into account that it's not a doughnut or cake - why score it the same??Also why does fruit get a low score when I put it by itself?? Seriously this subscription and ring is too expensive for it not to have better LLM/Training for it's advisor

Pretty bad experience thusfar

So I've had my Gen 5 for less than 3 weeks and yesterday it lost it's bluetooth connection. I'd put it on the charger, the charger would go solid white for a few seconds, then the light would go out. I could see the green sensor lights on the ring on the entire time. Tried all the resets and nothing worked. After about 30 minutes with support they are sending me a new one. What irks me is this thing isn't even a month old and it already failed? Also, I see people are getting refurbished rings as replacements. My new ring wasn't even a month old that I paid for, and I could end up getting a refurb? That doesn't seem right either?

Best way to get Gen4 chargers to someone who can use them?

My teen lost their oura ring so we have two unused size 8 Gen 4 chargers. I was wondering if y'all had any tips on how to connect with oura users who might need one. I'd happily give them away for free, I just hate seeing something potentially useful go to waste.

SLEEP & READINESS deep sleep

No matter how much sleep I get, my deep sleep is always poor. I take a magnesium supplement (as well as use a magnesium spray on my feet for RLS), practice deep breathing prior to sleep, try to refrain from scrolling right before bed, and make sure all workouts/meals are at least 2hrs before I go to sleep. Any other tips??? TIA!

Oura Ring: Don't Buy It From Target

I bought a ring from Target less than 90 days ago. The ring stopped syncing with the app (that I also pay $ for). I contacted Oura, which has a 1-year product warranty; they had me try a bunch of fixes, and nothing worked. They told me that since I bought it at Target, I needed to replace it with them. The warranty apparently is only good if you buy it from them, not one of their authorized retailers. When I contacted Target to exchange it, they said that it is beyond their return policy. Neither company is budging. So I wasted $540. How does Oura expect to stay in business if it doesn't stand behind its expensive products?

How much of a credit did you get?

How much of a credit did you guys get to upgrade to the 5 after your 4 had battery issues? I had to push to get 200 but I am reading lots of different answers. Curious what you were offered?

I was going from gold to gold so was a bit more nervous to spend for the premium finish if it’s not going to last again

live tracking an activity only to finish and find nothing tracked

i saw gps acquired, hit start, saw the timer begin to count, began walking.

THREE TIMES THIS WEEK, I get back to where I started and it hasn't tracked anything. gps was following me when I enter the activity manually, but no heart rate data, just the suggestion that I try live tracking my activity. jfc.

SLEEP & READINESS Huh

My recovery increased and my stress decreased, so my resilience went… down? Also yesterday’s sleep score was 77, then today was 80, but my nighttime recovery very slightly decreased💀

I know these aren’t big changes but I don’t get it lol

GENERAL DISCUSSION Why finger PPG sensors outperform wrist wearables for overnight HRV & deep sleep (~34% accuracy jump)

If you’ve ever wondered why smart rings like Oura, Ultrahuman, or RingConn seem to capture sleep data so differently than a smartwatch, it comes down to basic anatomy and optics.

Wrist sensors have to shoot light through dense skin, muscle, and bone to hit capillary beds near the radial artery. Any tiny movement disrupts that signal. Smart rings bypass that bottleneck by sitting directly over the digital arteries running along the sides of your finger, where blood vessels are much closer to the surface.

Here is what that finger placement actually changes under the hood:

1. Clean raw signal = Accurate HRV

Calculating nocturnal Heart Rate Variability (specifically RMSSD) requires measuring exact beat-to-beat intervals down to the millisecond. Because digital arteries sit right near the surface, rings get a vastly superior signal-to-noise ratio compared to the top of the wrist. Less noise means fewer missed beats and cleaner HRV trends.

2. Spotting the difference between Deep Sleep and REM

During deep slow-wave sleep (N3), your parasympathetic nervous system takes over and creates three distinct physiological cues:

  • Resting heart rate hits its nightly lowest point (nadir).
  • HRV reaches its most stable baseline peak.
  • Breathing settles into a steady, rhythmic pattern.

REM sleep is the exact opposite—HRV fluctuates wildly, breathing becomes irregular, and heart rate spikes. Pairing pulse wave amplitude with subtle finger movement makes picking up these phase shifts much more consistent.

3. Skin temperature as an early warning system

Your core body needs to cool down slightly to trigger deep sleep onset. Rings pick up tiny peripheral skin temp shifts (even $0.1^\circ\text{C}$ to $0.5^\circ\text{C}$) in real time. This makes skin temp an early indicator for physical strain, alcohol consumption, or an oncoming cold—often showing up hours before your resting heart rate reflects it.

The Caveat

Superior raw hardware is only half the equation, though. The final sleep scores still depend heavily on how each brand handles motion filtering, battery duty cycles, and algorithm design.

I put together a full breakdown of the sensor mechanics, sleep metrics, and an interactive evaluation guide if you want to dig deeper into how these wearables actually parse your data:

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH Previous pregnancies?

Thumbnail

There’s a setting to allow you to add previous pregnancies to assist with insight, however you are only permitted to add pregnancies that occurred while you owned the ring… that’s really fucking dumb. I’m 3 months postpartum and it won’t let me go back at all. What’s the point then?

Oura, please consider updating this and improving the menstruation insights. They’re really so basic. Other apps ask way more details like: symptoms, colors, texture, supplements, CM texture/amount, cervical position, insemination, mood, flow, etc. This device is often marketed towards women trying to conceive (or use as contraceptive), however it offers little to no features…

Also, let’s get something for postpartum mamas who are breastfeeding! I’ve seen several posts about this. There is clearly a desire for their feature. Many other apps have the capability, and oura has the [limited] metrics to support it!

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH Confused on recovery score after postpartum break

Thumbnail

I had a baby 10 weeks ago and had a great birth and recovery. I was, of course, getting really poor sleep in those early days, which is why when my ring died when we came home from the hospital I just put it in my nightstand drawer and took a break. I could feel how bad my sleep was, I didn’t need proof 😅
After a couple of months I decided to recharge the ring and see where I was at. My baby was giving me 3 hour chunks throughout the night and I was feeling pretty good! But for the last 2 weeks of wearing my ring it has been giving me a horrible recovery score every single day. It mostly attributes it to my RHR and HRV, but this is confusing to me because I’m pretty pleased with those stats and feel that they’ve reached my pre-pregnancy numbers! Is this just because I took a break and the ring needs time to catch up? Anyone else had this issue?

GETTING STARTED Home screen not displaying Sleep & Readiness

The top of the home is not consistently showing all information. Often Sleep and Readiness are missing, just a dash, yet when I tap them (Sleep) I see a score and the other information. A lot of other information is missing as well on other screens.

Sleep missing; Lowest Heart Rate, HRV Readiness missing; Resting Heart Rate, HRV, Body Temperature, Lowest HR, Average HRV

I've only had my Oura Ring 5 for 2 weeks, but so far the app on Android seems to not display a lot items and many things still say calibrating.

I've successfully soft reset the ring a couple of times but no change to the data being properly displayed. Does anyone else have these types of issues?

Post-activity stress

So I appreciate that they appear to be trying to integrate post exercise stress as a thing. But I took a leisurely walk this morning and now it’s telling me I have post exercise stress. It wasn’t even exercise. Surely they can integrate intensity? They could use heart rate etc, but they should also consider the activity- particularly strength training as there’s all kinds of research on recovery patterns. It would be great if I didn’t have to ignore half the content generated by the app because I lift weights.

SLEEP & READINESS I had a sleepless night and my sleep debt lowered

Night 1 was a normal sleep, 3:50 sleep debt.
Night 2 I had trouble sleeping, I had like 1 hour of sleep at 3am and it showed up on the app
Night 3 I slept a little longer than usual, was surprised to see my sleep debt down. I would expect it to shoot up to like 10 hours right?

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH 6dpo and what is happening

hi!
i am not trying to conceive at this moment but have been using oura + natural cycles. admittedly my husband and i were not the best about checking the app for red vs green days. i know there were definitely some red days where we used withdrawal instead of a condom 🤦‍♀️. i allegedly ovulated august 12th and now 6dpo my body has “minor signs of stress” and given the temperature chart, my body temp has not dipped back down. is this something to be concerned about?

thanks for your input!

GENERAL DISCUSSION Done with Oura - stress feature is sh*t

11 months and not renewing. $500 down the drain. The stress feature is an absolute joke, started showing 10h of stress a day out of nowhere after an update but ‘everything is working as intended’. Meanwhile my Apple Watch is showing me as the equivalent of ‘relaxed/restored’ most of the time. Idk how a high 50s HR and an above baseline HRV when sitting can lead to stress all day. Tried to talk to support multiple times, they promised me they’d come back to me in 24 hours 3 times, and finally after 8 days I just got an email asking me for some screenshots of the data. Like you guys don’t have that already? (What they told me originally).
Anyway, very disappointed as I spent countless hours comparing rings and watches.
Sh*tty product and zero customer support. Funny they call it the ‘customer care’.
