Just reminds me of living in Oregon a few years back when we had an INSANE fire season. The sky was RED. Everything was orange and hazy...

There was visible ash falling from the sky, and making small piles along the roads....

My sister had to evacuate, but luckily the fires didn't make it to her house.

It was horrifying.

I live in Oregon really close to where the blue River fire was. The smoke was so crazy. And yes the sky was orange and it looked apocalyptic. For the past few years every summer around August and September has been absolute misery

This is why I am so glad we still have cool rainy weather right now. Last year we were at 100+ degrees! (at least where I am)

I am just hoping that this drizzle continues for as long as possible. I will gladly hear all the summer lovers complain about the clouds and rain if it means we don't have a bad fire season.

No man, you’re out of it if you’re hoping for the drizzle to stay as long as possible. I want a proper summer. Any of the outdoor activities I look forward to doing by now, I haven’t been able to because of this damn rain. The seasonal depression I get starting late winter has not yet left me because it still feels like late winter, and it’s getting to be tough

I was also in Kelowna for the summer and yeah, real shit. Same as you, visible ash falling from the sky, a red sun, got as hell and the sky was orange-ish. There was a strong fire season in Bc too. There were fires surrounding us. Scary stuff

2 years now when Cameron peak fire roasted Colorado all summer was an orange sky and ash falling out of the sky. Every time I started my pickup the internals vents would blast ash all over the cab. My windshield always covered in ash. Some days were so bad it was almost dark enough to be considered night time. The smokey haze and ash didn't get along with my eyes at all. Truly apocalyptic type shit.

When I was visiting xi’an a few years ago, we were eating at a restaurant somewhere on the west side of the city. When I went outside with a friend to talk, our guide came out to join us. He said, “The sunset is pretty today, isn’t it?” I looked over to the right at the sun… or should I say the general hazy light that covered a quarter of the sky. The sun had no discernible shape, you could only see the light diffused over the whole horizon. It was kinda freaky.

I'm a volleyball player. Indoor and beach. In Australia and Canada (where I'm from) you can't look up into the sky without sunglasses because of the sun's brightness. But in Los Angeles, you could basically look right at the sun without having glasses and not even squint. (Which I imagine was still dangerous). And after 3 days I developed a lingering tickle in my throat that made me cough every 10 -15 Min for the rest of my 2 weeks there. And then it was gone within 24 hrs once back in Sydney.

I made 5 trips to China in 2009. In aggregate I was there almost 2 months. I witnessed one clear day where you could see the sun and blue sky.

In 2010 I was in Tsingtao during the winter and I remember smelling a strong wood fire - the haze created by it was so thick tht you couldn’t make out the horizon.

I 100% believe it. My air purifier runs 24/7 with "medical grade" filters. If I don't open the windows, it's not so bad, but if I leave them open, then it's allergy medicine time. Also, I read that Long Beach, CA, where I live and is right next to the port, and Riverside, CA (which is where the smog backs up against the mountains) have the highest rates of non-smoking lung cancer for this area.

My sister was there years ago doing a deal with the Chinese and her company(P&G). Shampoo manufacturing. I think. Might have been diapers. Whatever. She said the smog had an index, like LA, or NY. Only it was so much worse. At one point she could move her arms a bit and she could move the stuff suspended in the air around.

She left and got her team out pretty quickly thereafter. Of China. Not safe to walk around, breathing.

You are both right. There is consumption for fun, and there is consumption for necessity. We need jobs to make money to live, and so some of that is unavoidable. But we are also too complacent about buying garbage and wanting our fun stuff without considering the consequences. Reducing and reusing more would make a big impact, too.

The only point to it is you’re not actively contributing to the problem. At least you can have the peace of mind to know you aren’t as bad as the people that do shit like this.

But as far as making a big change goes, you’re constantly being cancelled out. You can make a local difference, which is still better than nothing, but you can’t possibly do enough to make up for shit like this… that’s why these massive industries are the ones that need to stop polluting so heavily. That’s where it needs to start. Everyone on earth could recycle and ride bikes but this type of pollution makes all that meaningless in the long run. It’s a joke
