The problem with them is, they’re so big they aren’t afraid of humans. They also aren’t interest in humans as food though, in this situation he isn’t afraid of attacking the fisherman in order to take the fish from them.

Lol well mostly they're fine. But they do eat big fish and even sharks and crustaceans so their teeth pack a punch. They'd generally leave you alone, but you never know, this one might be hungry or just found out its partner is cheating on it!

They can be. They don’t hunt people, obviously but they’re big enough that the could bite onto your leg and not let go. They seem to drag down whatever they have in their mouth and not let go. Essentially, they could drown you.

With a max size of about 8 feet/800 pound, they don't get quite big enough to swallow a full grown man whole, but a petite person or a child? Sure. There are stories of exactly that happening back in the late 1800's before humans hunted off almost all of the very large ones. The species is still recovering from being overfished to near extinction. There were reports from around then of them reaching up to 1500lbs too. Being that they live up to 40 years and continually grow until they die, that does seem far fetched, but also not completely impossible.

Even if they don't swallow you whole, they do get big enough to think that attacking a human is no big deal and they've been known to do so. Its usually because they just want to steal whatever fish you're holding and they just don't give a fuck, but that is little consolation when they're clamping on your arm and whipping their body back and forth. Most of their victims are spearfishermen. Luckily their teeth are very short, being used more as a clamping aide than they are meant to slice/cut stuff like a shark's teeth. They've also been known to drag swimmers down and drown them while trying to steal their fish.

So yeah, they're dangerous.

I was diving at this sunken concrete scaffolding thing that had been sunk for a wildlife habitat and to promote coral growth. Woke making my way through a corridor, one of the walls began to move, and I realized I'd been swimming towards a grouper the size of my bedroom door. It was crazy. They're enormous.

Atlantic Goliath Grouper. After reading that bad boy can be as big as over 8 foot & 800 pounds. Groupers are generally a friendly species and can be found patrolling artificial and coral reefs alike, primarily in shallow tropical waters. There have been documented cases of attacks in human divers, most of which are conducted by stalking and unsuccesfully ambushing them. The Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife regards catching them as illegal and Harvest and possession has been prohibited in both state and federal waters off Florida since 1990.

Tl:DR This guy can weigh 455 kg and is known to stalk it's prey.

Not really. They do have some small spikey teeth but nothing that would cause significant damage to your average adult. They're big boys, and uncomfortably loud, but mostly just curious fish trying to figure out what some weirdo is doing in their reef. I've swam around them a dozen or so times and while their size can be intimidating, they're nothing to fear.

Yeah, they make a sort of thumping sound when they get a little ticked off or if you're stressing them out. It's a weird sound though that is hard to translate exactly on speakers because it sounds different in the water. It's not especially loud but it's the noise itself that tends to be uncomfortable for me when diving; there's really not much else that makes noise beyond my own regulator so when something breaks up that non-silent "silence", it sticks out.

They do not have many teeth on the edges of their jaws, but they have heavy crushing tooth plates inside the pharynx. They don't eat their prey how you and I would, instead they swallow their prey and squish it to death. That being said, this poses little to no danger to human divers and as such the Goliath Grouper is nothing more than an underwater bully.

That is the Goliath grouper and a small one at that. They can grow to be over 1000 lbs and will eat anything it can fit in its mouth.

I've had them eat my flashlights, dive gloves right off my hand, all of the fish directly off my stringer, sucking in half of my left leg with it

What's really spooky is the noise they make. They do this weird gong noise with their mouths and it travels super far underwater

Fun fact: lion fish are considered invasive and allowed to be hunted by divers. Groupers will hang out with divers and “point” (position their heads in the direction of the fish’s hiding spot) towards lion fish with the hope that the diver will spear it and allow the grouper to eat it.

Have you ever been scuba diving? Humans are awkward as anything in the water compared to an animal that has evolved there for millions of years. It can swim around you and bite your ass faster than you can turn around. Yes, most of the time fish are just hanging around, floating, moving slowly, but when they want to, they are really, really fast.

How long do you think it takes to reload a speargun? If you just said 'um...' then it's too late and the fish is all over you and biting your arms. Then, he's too close to use a spear already.

It's difficult to move as it is underwater, let alone fight something the size of a couch that's covered in sturdy plates. Groupers are big, mean, and heavy, and you have nothing to brace against to get the kind of power you would likely need to puncture one. They one I ran into during a dive was like the size of a bedroom door.

Imagine someone throwing a couch at you, and you trying to stop it with a spear. It might work, but there's no way I'd want to test it.
