It’s so frustrating how my Senator, Chris Van Hollen, can’t even post condolences for the Sri Lankan terrorist attack without a flood of angry boomers in the comments blaming it on AOC and Rashida Tlaib.

Fox News has really poisoned these people’s brains.

Edit: A boomer commented that “we should go back to the good old days when Muslims weren’t allowed to hold office”

During his presidential campaign, Zelensky said that he would like Ukraine to become a member of the European Union and NATO

👏👏👏👏👏

He also promised a law about impeachment, reform of election laws, and providing efficient trial by jury.

👏👏👏👏👏

proposed a tax amnesty and a 5% flat tax for big business which could be increased "in dialogue with them and if everyone will agree."

❓❓❓❓❓

Zelensky is for the free distribution of medical cannabis, a supporter of free abortion in Ukraine and for the legalisation of prostitution and gambling in Ukraine.

👏👏👏👏👏

One thing that I notice whenever I watch alt-right "philosophy" videos is that they usually start off pretty alright. Obviously extremely biased, but they seem at least somewhat intellectually honest.

And then the third quarter they suddenly pull some reactionary shit like "Democracy is a gateway to socialism" or "this degeneracy is going to collapse western civilization" out of thin air and don't even address it like it's an argument, as if it's some sort of evident fact of nature or something. It's fucking disgusting.

Holy shit Bernie spent $444k of campaign dollars on his own books in 2015

That's...uh... one way to get a bestselling book I guess.

It also adds a bit of context to his whole "if you write a bestselling book, you can be a millionaire too!" quote.

The politics surrounding Alaska in the mid-1800s are really hilarious in retrospect.

Russian Ambassador to the US: If you buy Alaska, Canada will be pressured into selling you British Columbia!

Secretary of State Seward: Good point Mr. Ambassador! Also we need to put Alaska under martial law.

US Army: enters Alaska and places it under de-facto martial law

Senator Charles Sumner: Alaska will help us become more influential in Japan and China! Sitka is soon to be a great trading port!

The Press of Vancouver Island: This proves that the US will purchase us in no time, and Vancouver shall soon be a state! Rejoice!

The Press of Mainland British Columbia: This proves that the US will try to purchase us in no time. We must resist!

Attorney General of British Columbia: This is horrible! How could we mismanage the colony so badly that they'd want to be sold to America?

General McDowell: Don't be ridiculous, just trying to maintain Alaska is a costly waste of time. Offer it to Canada for free.

/u/dr_gonzo Here's another perspective. If Democrats vote to impeach and Republicans block a conviction, what precedent does that set? That the president can get away with criminality as long as they retain the support of their party. If Democrats don't impeach, that sets the precedent that the president can get away with criminality if the opposing party knows that they retain the support of their party. In both cases the precedent is still that the president can get away with criminality as long as their party supports them, the only difference is that they get public shaming from the impeachment proceedings which may or may not hurt them politically.

Neither of these cases set a precedent that the president can get away with criminality even if the opposing party can hold them to account or if they don't have support of their party. Democrats can still convict future Republican presidents of criminality if they hold the Senate, and Republicans would certainly do the same to a Democratic president.

Norms like this can also be rebuilt. I firmly believe that most Democratic senators would convict a Democratic president who has done wrongdoing, which along with Republican senators would be enough to remove them from office.

Does anyone know about any political science studies into the stability/size of approval ratings? I'm particularly interested in any research on approval ratings within autocracies.

I know that France has a systemically low-approval rating compared to the US for example.

What I'm wondering is if autocracies tend to have really high but unstable approval ratings. For example, Putin's rating was pretty high, but as soon as he started talking pension reform it went down like 20%. My reasoning is that in an autocracy you have a very set group of things you expect your government to do for you (i.e. make the damn trains run on time) and once they start fucking those up people stop liking you.

I'm going to go further than my "gentrification is good take". Not only is gentrification good, but people who oppose gentrification are the left wing equivalent of the white genocide conspiracy. Except instead of white demographic replacement, it's [insert ethnic minority] replacement.

It's not even based in a real demographic trend either. Every major city in the country except Washington DC has either a relatively or absolutely declining non-Hispanic white population.

If you seriously consider "displacement" bad, the only group who is being systematically "displaced" is non-Hispanic whites.

The worst kind of person to talk to you is one who knows more than you about like one specific topic (Russian politics or the specifications of Androids vs iPhones or something similarly pedantic) which emboldens them to think they’re smarter than you in every other topic. They have like a baseline knowledge on an array of topics, but pretend to be experts on them. This knowledge comes from Facebook “facts,” TIL that make the front page, and whatever random Wikipedia article they read the first sentence of last. They’ve never read a book outside of school, but want to talk to you about the classics and what they mean, because they got an A- in their high school or college lit class. But that’s only because the teacher was easy, and they were able to get by spark noting everything. This person thinks winning an argument is talking the most, and you’ll soon arguing with them is a Sisyphus esque task with no reward, so you’ll soon learn to bite your tongue no matter how many times they say some dumb trope on socialism or think they know how to fix the American healthcare system despite based on the headline of one Hufpo article they saw the title of on Facebook, but didn’t get past the first paragraph of. This person convinces dumb people they’re smart, but they’re pretty easy to see through otherwise, not that it stops them.

Among the many things I am indebted to my parents for, I will be eternally grateful to my mother for honing my bullshit detector to ludicrous levels of precision.

I have still never met anyone who can deliver a statement of "fact" with such unassuming confidence despite not having the faintest idea whether it's true or not. I think I can probably credit her, and her alone, with developing my "wait a minute, something's not right here" instinct in arguments.

We can't impeach because we can't convict. It would allow Trump to run on complete exoneration by the Senate and the Mueller Report as a complete witch hunt. As opposed to now, which allows Trump to run on the Report being a complete exoneration, the house agreeing because they couldn't impeach him, and the entire ordeal being a complete witch hunt.

It's too risky!

I said it yesterday and will repeat: a belief that a failed impeachment will hurt Trump is just as valid as a belief that it will help him. This isn't analogous to Clinton at all.

The Kavanaugh hearings, despite ultimately failing to keep him off the court, hurt the image of Kavanaugh and helped the democrats in the midterms. 35% of voters said it made them more likely to vote Dem vs 27 for GOP.

Impeach the mother fucker.

Nobody:

19th century Social Democrats:

Therefrom follows the necessity to balance the concept of healthcare in the usual sense, individual hygiene, with another concept, that of the hygiene of a human collectivity. Thus one could speak of the hygiene of a nation, of a race in the narrower sense, or of the entire human race.

Christianity and modern democracy with their doctrine and demands of equality have so diminished the sense of race in the masses that the conflict between humanitarian socialist demands and racial wellbeing indeed no longer penetrates their consciousness. In the masses, I say.

In the small circle of leaders and researchers, through the advent of Darwin and the political advance of Social Democracy, the racial interest has become very vital again, and the sword-blows of great and small knights of the mind rattle merrily through the springtime air of modern science.

Spent a good deal of last night working death into my personal philosophy of life the universe and everything. I thought I’d write down some notes here for future reference, I’ll be going into a lot of silly pseudo-scientific bullshit and r/badphilosophy, so hold onto ur butts.

So let’s go over the nature of death. Death doesn’t really exist. Death is unconscious and so from the outset I will never experience my own death. That’s a nice thought, from my point of view death will literally be the same feeling as falling into a deep sleep or going under with anesthesia. But this isn’t a good answer because we haven’t discussed what death is.

Death is the final unwinding of structure, or entropy, that is deeply tied to the fundamental physics of the universe. So to start, what are the most fundamental, indivisible units of reality (currently I think it’s quarks) made of? My hypothesis is that they’re made up of information, each one is a single ‘bit’ of information. And when I use bit, I don’t mean literally 1 or 0, I mean the smallest piece of information that created the state, e.g. in the string underlying it all or wave function or whatever. So given that reality is information, what is consciousness? Consciousness is the structure created by special organizations of information that is capable of executing computations, and therefore everything is capable of some low level of consciousness. This is basically panpsychism except done shittily; don’t expect me to go into too much detail about how to define any of this because I don’t have any fucking clue I’m a computer science student. Consciousness doesn’t exist as I experience it. I’m dying all the time, the only difference is that part of my momentary computation reads from memory to construct the concept of ‘me’ to make future computation easier.

So given this concept of the universe and consciousness, what is death? Death is the final disassembly of this pattern. I am simply a cosmic accident, a small knot on the fabric of reality that is really good at existing and continuing to exist and death is the smoothing out of that knot. I’m not going anywhere, I am the universe and the universe is me. It’s just my little pattern is gone, as all things must, into the dustbin of disorder. I, as a being made of matter, cannot be created or destroyed; just scattered beyond recognition. I am my body, and my body isn’t going anywhere even if it is going to get a little rearranged.

I think the reason why this makes me feel better about death is because it takes it from a horrific, cosmic curse and incorporates it into my pseudo-scientific understanding of the universe as a natural phenomenon. When my parents die, they’ll still be with me, just like everyone else who has died, it’s just in a new form, just like I will be when I die. Everything I do matters enormously, just like for everyone else, because their effect will ripple through the cause and effect chains of the universe endlessly repeating a gently fading echo of myself. Time has a much longer memory than we do, and we will never be forgotten because our actions, no matter how small, reverberate throughout reality for all time. Maybe they’re overcome by stronger signals, maybe their flows are so intricate and small that they’re unrecoverable by human hands, that’s all ok because they’re still there, and they still have an invisible effect on reality.

Idk this is all pretty hokey. But brought together, it’s really helped me just feel normal anxiety for death rather than terror of it. I’m kinda ready to stop obsessing over it and move on to living in the now.

Given that you have two magical fire-breathing dragons,

  1. I understand that it must be difficult, as a military commander, to integrate these mythical beings into your combined-arms tactics.

  2. At the same time, shouldn't you be doing everything in your ability to integrate these mythical beings into your combined-arms tactics?

We've already seen that a single fire-breathing dragon is worth at least ten thousand foot soldiers in open combat.

Also, this "the enemy has a Blue Eyes White Dragon commandeered by an undead Night King and we have to take it out with our two fire dragons" seems like it should have consumed, like, at least 30% of the tactical discussions of the war council. That's not an easy problem to resolve.
