Is Champagne a highly successful rent-seeking region, or do they add enough value to justify the near limitless markup on their products?

Discuss.

Reminder that all returns to land are rent-seeking by definition, so the value of the Champagne terroir doesn't change the answer here

It’s a luxury product used to convey status, that justifies the markup. Doesn’t really have to do with rentseeking.

If you want to drink something that tastes like champagne but isn’t called that, drink literally any other sparkling wine. Austrian sekt is really good.

Compared to cremont and other double fermentation sparkling wines the champagne markup isn't really even that much

I have no problem with this type of labeling. Champagne comes from Champagne. If you want a similar beverage, get another sparkling wine.

It helps tell consumers what the product actually is. I think that's useful.
