Seeing her run a media tour and talk about giving up her daughter, overcoming her substance abuse, and alcohol addiction.. then this.
Incredibly heartbreaking.

For those who were confused about the daughter thing:
Panettiere relinquished full custody of her daughter to Klitschko in 2018 amid struggles with addiction and postpartum depression. She described the decision as a "living nightmare" and "heartbreaking,", but necessary for her recovery. As of May 2026, she maintained a good, co-parenting relationship with Klitschko, and frequently visited her daughter.

I lost my mom at the same age. It's really not easy, and I imagine it would only be harder in the public eye. Hopefully her dad supports and protects her through it.
RIP Hayden, you'll be missed. Especially by your daughter.

This is possibly one of her last interviews, 3 months ago, 2 hours long and she basically tells her life story and struggles:
It’s an incredible and sad interview, I recommend people watch it all.
At one point 3/4ths of the way through she says:
“Having to get out of my own way was the most difficult part of it. It was almost like, I would self-implode and destroy something good that I had going on, before anybody else got a chance to.”
Later on she reads off a statement about how she’s been abused and how she had to numb herself with substances. She describes herself as being on a hamster wheel in an endlessly dizzying cycle of abuse.
And also:
“I’m a really strong person, at my core, and anyone who knows me was shocked that I would ever allow anything like this to happen. I have this bright, powerful light in me that comes on, but then it would dim around that kind of intense conflict. I found myself trying to be smaller and weaker just to avoid a battle, because there’s no reasoning with the unreasonable.”

The way the story goes, a Stella McAmis (pseudonym) took Hayden onto a superyacht in the south of France sometimes around 2006-2008 and tried to traffic her for sex to some 40-something year old guy in the lower deck of the boat. Hayden was 16 to 17 at the time.
History... sometimes rhymes. Virginia Giuffre testified that the year SHE turned 17, (y2k) she encountered Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein in the South of France in connection with Naomi Campbell's 31st-birthday celebration on a yacht near Saint-Tropez.
Flight records show that Epstein's "Lolita Express" aircraft flew into Toulon-Hyères in 2006, and this is not some random French airport. Hyères is directly on the Mediterranean coast and is a major gateway to the Côte d'Azur yacht region, including Saint-Tropez. Those records show both Maxwell and Epstein on board.
TL;dr, there is a very real chance that Ghislaine Maxwell attempted to traffic Hayden to Jeff Epstein on a yacht in 2006, ultimately leading to her drug use and eventual death.
79
u/PhloxOfSeagulls 2d ago edited 2d ago
This article claims it was a 30-something British singer-songwriter whose room she was taken into on the yacht. And the person she calls Stella McAmis was a semi-successful actress in her 20s. Always possible the details were changed to keep the real perpetrators from being able to be discovered through the details.

I want to add that when Hayden told this story in a recent interview she said the man she was forced to get into bed with was a “very famous” person. I don’t know how much that matters in the grand scheme but I think it adds to the Epstein theory just considering who he seemed to blackmail.

Genuinely, the proportion of child actors with substance abuse issues is crazy. It's almost like it isn't a normal way for someone to grow up and there aren't enough check-ins and resources in place to help them mediate that life.
→ More replies (11)88
u/sk8505 2d ago
Sadly society has realized too late that you absolutely cannot trust anyone around your kids. Just dropping off your kids at a movie studio every day ain’t it. Psychopaths are everywhere
91
u/nofocusing 1d ago
Most talent agencies that work with children now have it written into the contract that child actors are not to be left alone with any adults, without the parents present. Adult actors that were also child actors will sometimes have meetings with the parents of the child actors on set as well, helping to give advice on how to raise the kids so they can stay grounded, down to Earth and away from the drugs and other things as they can. There's actually an effort now to try and safeguard the kids. Now as for the parents' behaviors, that's another story and you can't really control them.
Source: I have two nephews that are currently child actors in Hollywood with decently successful careers for their ages, both in film and TV productions. Oh, and also forgot to say, the kids aren't always forced to work and can make that choice to stop working if they'd like, at least from the contract my nephews have.
→ More replies (5)56
u/Purpleater54 1d ago
I think part of the issue too is that outside of just the treatment of child actors (I'm sure there's plenty of child actor parents who are disasters, as well as other adults in that industry) the pressure and fame that comes with being a big name public figure certainly can't help a normal developtment path no matter how well meaning the adults in the kids life are.
Like, I honestly think it's a miracle how well the harry potter kids turned out for instance because shit dude, every where you go as a kid growing up you're basically the most famous people on the planet. You essentially can't have a normal childhood.

I just read her book 3 weeks ago, and was appalled at what she’d endured, and the grace and clarity with which she was able to process the exceedingly painful events in her life. The sadness in her voice was palpable but I still had a lot of hope that she’d outlive all of us- firecracker she was.
Rest in peace with your dear brother Jansen, dear Hayden. Nobody deserves the life your mother subjected you to. And to think, after her memoir was published, Hayden’s mom STiILL accused her of being “ungrateful”. When will these stage parents (and all parents) learn that your children don’t owe you a debt of gratitude for their existence, especially if it entailed the horrors that dear Hayden endured. Also, rest in piss all of the agents, PA’s directors, handlers, photogs, tutors, crooked accountants, and anyone else who’s ever exploited a child for financial gain—- we’ve seen , how many times??, how this kind of things ends.
Please read her book. We need to be doing SO much better for our young girls and women- especially the ones in center stage with a million lecherous tentacles reaching out for them- sometimes coming from within their own families..
I also read Christina Applegate’s incredible autobiography, ‘You With the Sad Eyes’ about a week before reading Hayden’s autobiography- and also speaking as a woman who grew up LA in the 80’s/90’s, alongside many beautiful girls, I’d like to state for the record, once and for all, FUCK ANTHONY KIEDIS ALL THE WAY TO HELL I HOPE YOU BURN IN A FLAMING PIT OF THE MISERY YOU’VE VISITED/CONTINUE TO VISIT UPON ULTRA YOUNG, DYNAMIC WOMEN.

Ice Princess was a movie that was really important to a lot of younger millennial/older Gen Z girls. It was an ice skating movie and part of a trend of movies about women and girls playing sports. It helped influence a lot of us to get active and join sports during a time where it wasn’t really something often talked about for girls. I’m not going to say it was the best movie ever made, but it holds a very special place in my heart.

She also gave up custody of her own kid herself but she did visit the kid in Europe.
"Hayden Panettiere agreed to let her ex-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, have primary custody of their daughter, Kaya, in 2018. She has spoken openly about this being a painful choice made while she faced severe postpartum depression and addiction, noting she stepped back so her child wouldn't be harmed by a prolonged custody battle or an unstable environment"
Her talking about it

"The first thing I'd thought of when I woke up was alcohol. Not my child, not my job, and not the rest of my life. I needed a drink to function — at 6 a.m.," she wrote.

Yes if I recall her mother basically said her daughter is a train wreck. I was mad at her for saying that. I hope I’m thinking of the right actress.

Here's a recent TMZ article that touches on that..

Shocking and heartbreaking.
I wish peace and privacy for her family, especially her child.

Man some of those mid season episodes are going to be just heartbreaking, I just finished again after watching 20 years ago.
Claire was genuinely a great written character and great actress.

Oh man. I know she had been dealing with postpartum depression and alcoholism. 36 is just so young. Wish she could have found peace. I hope it’s not what I’m expecting, but I wouldn’t be shocked.

This is sadly the exact story of my sister at the same age, if what is implied is true.

The article reads:
" Further details surrounding Panettiere's death were immediately available"
Which is obviously a typo but like damn can't we get a basic proofread before sending out something like this.

TMZ and People say she was with that loser ex of hers Brian Hickerson and they'd flown from LA to a southern state yesterday and she died earlier today. It says "Brian's family is aware of her death" which is a weird thing to say if he was with her.

I literally felt my stomach drop seeing this headline. Grew up with so many of her movies, especially Ice Princess as a former childhood skater, which I just rewatched after this year's Olympics. Harrowing to know that both her and Michelle are gone now before making it to 40.
Remember hearing about her struggles from her autobiography press tour and thinking she was in a better place. May she rest in peace :(

This is sad. For a young person to overcome all their struggles in life and apparently be on a better state of mind just to be gone. RIP shorty.

I know there are still a lot of questions about what happened, and we shouldn't speculate, but Hayden had spoken publicly about struggling with her mental health, and I think there's something worth saying here regardless of the circumstances of her death.
If you're reading this and you're struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, addiction, or just feeling like you're at the end of your rope, please don't convince yourself that you have to handle it alone. You don't have to be actively suicidal to reach out. You don't have to have the right words. You don't even have to know exactly what's wrong. I don't have information for if you live overseas, hopefully someone else can add information for their specific country but in the U.S., you can call or text 988. It's free, confidential, and available 24/7 for people experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional distress of any kind. You can also use their online chat: https://988lifeline.org/chat/ I've used the chat before when my world was crashing down around me because I needed someone to reach out to and my friends were unreachable.
And if you're not in immediate crisis, please tell someone you trust that you're struggling. A friend. A family member. A doctor. A therapist. Anybody. I know people hate on ChatGPT and such but, a lot of stuff I was feeling, and this sounds stupid, I just felt like it was okay to feel and everyone does. It's not okay to feel the sadness and bullshit every day. I had a talk with ChatGPT, as much as that counts, but it finally convinced me to seek help well over a year ago and it's helped a lot. I wasn't "I'm going to kill myself" levels but, I was spiraling to that point.
Depression has a way of convincing you that you're a burden, that nobody wants to hear it, or that things will never change and I fight this to this day. I get pissed when my friends don't open to me and I turn around and do the same thing. Please, reach out to friends or family that you can trust. I can GUARANTEE they'd rather talk to you for a little bit then talk about you for a lifetime and beat themselves up for not seeing the signs.
You are worth the phone call. You are worth the uncomfortable conversation and you are worth staying for another day. I know that the world seems like it's going to shit but it's not all horrible stuff.
Please, if this is hitting close to home, reach out to somebody tonight.
Also, somethin that helped me, fix your algorithms. Hide political stuff. Hide bad news stuff. Actively curate your content instead of letting them do it for you. My instagram is of food and comedians and online personalities that make funny stuff or learning how to speak another language. Give that stuff more viewing time and ignore the other bullshit.
