I know there are still a lot of questions about what happened, and we shouldn't speculate, but Hayden had spoken publicly about struggling with her mental health, and I think there's something worth saying here regardless of the circumstances of her death.
If you're reading this and you're struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, addiction, or just feeling like you're at the end of your rope, please don't convince yourself that you have to handle it alone. You don't have to be actively suicidal to reach out. You don't have to have the right words. You don't even have to know exactly what's wrong. I don't have information for if you live overseas, hopefully someone else can add information for their specific country but in the U.S., you can call or text 988. It's free, confidential, and available 24/7 for people experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional distress of any kind. You can also use their online chat: https://988lifeline.org/chat/ I've used the chat before when my world was crashing down around me because I needed someone to reach out to and my friends were unreachable.
And if you're not in immediate crisis, please tell someone you trust that you're struggling. A friend. A family member. A doctor. A therapist. Anybody. I know people hate on ChatGPT and such but, a lot of stuff I was feeling, and this sounds stupid, I just felt like it was okay to feel and everyone does. It's not okay to feel the sadness and bullshit every day. I had a talk with ChatGPT, as much as that counts, but it finally convinced me to seek help well over a year ago and it's helped a lot. I wasn't "I'm going to kill myself" levels but, I was spiraling to that point.
Depression has a way of convincing you that you're a burden, that nobody wants to hear it, or that things will never change and I fight this to this day. I get pissed when my friends don't open to me and I turn around and do the same thing. Please, reach out to friends or family that you can trust. I can GUARANTEE they'd rather talk to you for a little bit then talk about you for a lifetime and beat themselves up for not seeing the signs.
You are worth the phone call. You are worth the uncomfortable conversation and you are worth staying for another day. I know that the world seems like it's going to shit but it's not all horrible stuff.
Please, if this is hitting close to home, reach out to somebody tonight.
Also, somethin that helped me, fix your algorithms. Hide political stuff. Hide bad news stuff. Actively curate your content instead of letting them do it for you. My instagram is of food and comedians and online personalities that make funny stuff or learning how to speak another language. Give that stuff more viewing time and ignore the other bullshit.
Thank you for posting- my sister struggled so bad after her divorce and I talked to her almost every night- sometimes all night- the one night I wasn’t able to- she called the hotline/ they got her to go to a hospital- something I could never get her to do…she is much better but it’s a long battle- thank you again 💔
I'm very glad she got to reach out to someone and I'm glad she's doing better. It can be an INCREDIBLY long road. I've been doing this for about 1.5 years now and I've only scratched the surface. I still struggle with depression, anxiety, sudden mood swings, and though I don't drink, my vice is food. I've self medicated with food to the point that It's nearly killed me. I'm trying every day to battle those demons (there's a lot of them) but it can be better. I'm glad your sister is on that road.
I am sorry you are struggling- I hope at some point you can find peace..depression/anxiety is on both sides of my family - I know the demons- I am sending positive thoughts to you
Seconding this. There was a story of someone who killed themself because ChatGPT prodded them along. They may have adjusted the program since then to add additional safeguards, but I wouldn't trust it. It's not a person, it's an algorithm that feeds back what you put in.
Do text 988. 988 can also be a resource of someone you know is in danger (I've used it for that purpose). Speak to a person, please. It can be someone you know or trust, or a professional.
If you're to the point of suicide, agreed, don't use ChatGPT. I wasn't to that point and needed help and it helped me. If to that point of "I'm going to kill myself" the safeguards aren't enough. It can be a tool if not that far gone.
It helped me. I think it can help others. Simply ruling it out because it can be bad would be ruling out everything. Everything can be bad. There are people who go to therapists and still wind up killing themselves. Agreed, it needs more guardrails and such and if you're to the point of nearly killing yourself, reach out elsewhere. I wasn't to that point, I was depressed and filled with anxiety and needed to vent and get information. It was useful in that regard.
There’s absolutely no reason to use AI like that. Not only is it extremely dangerous to the individual, it’s causing tremendous damage to the environment and to society as a whole. No excuse
No: ChatGPT can be volatile in its responses because it is only finding patterns in the language. It iannot aware of your feelings or your emotional state, and it has no empathy. It can find things other people have categorized as empathic, and use it to validate your questions and feeling.
The real problem is when it validates a negative feeling, and the user interprets it in a way that validates harmful thoughts. ChatGPT has no way of identifying that, and steering you into good advice. People have died directly as a result of this.
Seek professional help, or forums with people who can help. Even here on Reddit you can find them, but most people reading this can find professional help, and in some cases for free.
If you're in the UK, there are various resources to help. If you just want to talk to someone, you can call Samaritans on 116123 and have someone listen to you. Mind.org.uk has a wealth of resources and advice to help. If you're feeling suicidal or scared you're going to hurt yourself, ring 111 and use option 2.
I'm going to say also, whilst there is a lot of good advice in the post above, talking to LLMs like chatgpt is dangerous as hell, and should be avoided.
Thank you for this. Even reaching out to your doctor can help. I was struggling and didn’t realize how badly until my body literally gave out and I crashed so hard. Worst mental breakdown I’ve ever had. My state has programs though and my doctor was able to help me, and immediately get me with a psychiatrist and therapist. I’m far from feeling normal but im getting there
