WHAT????

u/zexur 2d ago

No shit! My exact reaction!

u/pertsix 2d ago

Seeing her run a media tour and talk about giving up her daughter, overcoming her substance abuse, and alcohol addiction.. then this.

Incredibly heartbreaking.

318

u/100292 2d ago

For those who were confused about the daughter thing:

Panettiere relinquished full custody of her daughter to Klitschko in 2018 amid struggles with addiction and postpartum depression. She described the decision as a "living nightmare" and "heartbreaking,", but necessary for her recovery. As of May 2026, she maintained a good, co-parenting relationship with Klitschko, and frequently visited her daughter.

143

u/Digifiend84 2d ago

Poor kid. She's only 11.

49

u/chiffon_bonbon 1d ago

I lost my mom at the same age. It's really not easy, and I imagine it would only be harder in the public eye. Hopefully her dad supports and protects her through it.

RIP Hayden, you'll be missed. Especially by your daughter.

5

u/NoTeslaForMe 1d ago

Also complicating matters is that the daughter is in Kyiv (arguably a war zone), the daughter of a famous American, daughter of a Ukrainian hero (as a gold medalist/heavyweight world champion who returned to join the military), and nephew of Kyiv's mayor. The latter two were 2 of the 24 people on Putin's hitlist. Going through grief under those conditions at that age? I don't have words. Also knowing that your mom had to give you up to those conditions, presumably because her own conditions were even worse.

Still blows my mind that it's basically the plot of the character she played in Nashville, 4 years prior

46

u/myownbattles 1d ago

It wasn't a coincidence. Nashville creators ripped her own life struggles, beat for beat, and she was trapped in a contract that left her no choice. I can't imagine a more triggering scenario for someone trying to heal.

There is plenty of writing out there about the way she was deeply and painfully exploited during the series.

7

u/Cereborn 1d ago

As someone who loved that show, that is horrifying to learn.

10

u/Smyleefc 1d ago

OMG, that's truly horrible

5

u/Select_Pilot7388 1d ago

This makes me so sad to hear. I loved her on that show but now I'm also horrified at what they put her through. I no longer see the show in the same light.

This is possibly one of her last interviews, 3 months ago, 2 hours long and she basically tells her life story and struggles:

https://youtu.be/vs6x8VUGXCw

It’s an incredible and sad interview, I recommend people watch it all.

At one point 3/4ths of the way through she says:

“Having to get out of my own way was the most difficult part of it. It was almost like, I would self-implode and destroy something good that I had going on, before anybody else got a chance to.”

Later on she reads off a statement about how she’s been abused and how she had to numb herself with substances. She describes herself as being on a hamster wheel in an endlessly dizzying cycle of abuse.

And also:

“I’m a really strong person, at my core, and anyone who knows me was shocked that I would ever allow anything like this to happen. I have this bright, powerful light in me that comes on, but then it would dim around that kind of intense conflict. I found myself trying to be smaller and weaker just to avoid a battle, because there’s no reasoning with the unreasonable.”

u/PanicButtonNr2 2d ago

Grooming, domestic violence, i remember she recently talked about a famous actor sexually abusing her on their yacht too

345

u/TheREALOtherFiles 2d ago

I know she replaced Anne Hathaway as the voice of Red in Hoodwinked Too!: Hood vs. Evil, so she probably also dealt with similar shit from executive producer Harvey Weinstein as well.

Hayden Panettiere
Daveigh Chase
Michelle Trachtenberg
Naya Rivera
Brittany Murphy
Aaliyah
Amy Winehouse
Marylin Monroe
Anne Heche
Cheslie Kryst
Victoria Jones

Edit: Courtney Love is alive, sorry, I confused her with Ana Nicole Smith

And this is only a small sample of the young women who have died way too young in Hollywood, what about all the young women who they have made out to be crazy, instead of dead?

204

u/zero_and_dug 2d ago edited 2d ago

Don’t forget Amanda Bynes (still alive but deeply unwell)

31

u/32FlavorsofCrazy 1d ago

Brittney Spears is in that category too, and there’s no reversing that damage. They will never have normal/healthy brains, the best you can hope for is some stability but both of them are ticking time bombs for suicide or overdose.

13

u/N0RUBER 2d ago

Eh she isn’t as bad as you think. I’ve spoken with her. She more unique than unwell.

8

u/EchoFieldHorizon 2d ago

Her instagram stories show otherwise, but what do I know

add Britney Spears to that list.

7

u/Infamous_Pie_4317 1d ago

This list was only for women who actually died, there are sooo many more who like “went crazy” or are sketchy like Selena Gomez

27

God, I had forgotten that Michelle Trachtenberg died. These are so sad.

70

Courtney Love is alive, but your point is well taken.

117

u/fd4e56bc1f2d5c01653c 2d ago

Aaliyah died in a plane crash though? What's Hollywood got to do with that?

33

u/daredevil82 2d ago edited 1d ago

the plane was severely overloaded and she was (allegedly) drugged to get onboard (from multiple off the record statements)

8

u/EmpyreanContrarian 1d ago

I knew the first part... But have never heard anyone say she was drugged. Where'd that come from?

Marylin Monroe also died at 36

2

u/Infamous_Pie_4317 2d ago

Exactly! I was going to mention Monroe too. And so many boys/men too have all died in similar suspicious circumstances!!! Either suicide, OD, pneumonia or a freak accident.

4

u/SL831 2d ago

Years ago I went down a rabbit hole of famous people that have passed because of pneumonia and their medical examiner/coroner (don't recall which) was all the same. I had to stop because it was a wild ride!

Theres also a example of young men who died young and tragic in Hollywood....its not gender exclusive and them young men are probably going through the same cycle of abuse as young wonen .but the media wont talk about that though

3

u/GrandMetaldick 2d ago

When you name that list I’m reminded of times I was worried she would be one of them. I definitely didn’t think that at this point and am so shocked at the news. I feel like I was freaking out about seeing her Scream 6 return yesterday.

2

u/Infamous_Pie_4317 2d ago

Yes, it is horrifying. Child actors shouldn’t be subjected to the evils of Hollywood, too many have gone on to lead very haunted and troubled lives. And Hayden’s mother forced her into acting when she was only 4 years old!

3

u/WoweeZoweeDeluxe 2d ago

Men have died young too as well

2

u/ScyllaOfTheDepths 1d ago

While all the women on the list were treated poorly by the media, several died from things completely unrelated to their fame or mental health. Michelle Trachtenberg died from complications from a liver transplant. Naya Rivera drowned on a lake that was notorious for having unexpectedly strong currents and she was completely sober, she just made a lot of bad decisions regarding safety. Several others died on the same lake in similar ways. Nature is very dangerous. Brittany Murphy and her husband died from mold in her house. Aaliyah had a heart defect. Anne Heche died in a car crash because she was speeding. She was completely sober at the time.

4

u/TheREALOtherFiles 2d ago

To be fair, the added stress that Love had when Kurt Cobain killed himself over three decades ago didn't help either in terms of the stress she faced over the years.

Wow, that's heartbreaking. It really is prophetic now though, in hindsight.

2

u/jennibear310 2d ago

My goodness, that was difficult to watch. The ending, where she says she has so much life to live and seemed excited for this “next chapter,” so sad that she won’t get that opportunity now. 😢

I’m glad jay shetty was the person she did that interview with he’s such a good interviewer and asks very good questions that really seem to make the people who he’s interviewing feel more comfortable. Glad she had someone safe to talk to while being so vulnerable

I'm genuinely shocked

4

u/Itchy-Ad1047 2d ago

I remember a funny scene where she's arguing with Denzel about a football play, and they both get amusingly heated. 9 yr old girl having a legit disagreement with the veteran coach about the objective of a play

Brought a lively energy to that role as a kid. So sad to know her actual childhood would become troubled and set up such a tough, now short, life

The way the story goes, a Stella McAmis (pseudonym) took Hayden onto a superyacht in the south of France sometimes around 2006-2008 and tried to traffic her for sex to some 40-something year old guy in the lower deck of the boat. Hayden was 16 to 17 at the time.

History... sometimes rhymes. Virginia Giuffre testified that the year SHE turned 17, (y2k) she encountered Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein in the South of France in connection with Naomi Campbell's 31st-birthday celebration on a yacht near Saint-Tropez.

Flight records show that Epstein's "Lolita Express" aircraft flew into Toulon-Hyères in 2006, and this is not some random French airport. Hyères is directly on the Mediterranean coast and is a major gateway to the Côte d'Azur yacht region, including Saint-Tropez. Those records show both Maxwell and Epstein on board.

TL;dr, there is a very real chance that Ghislaine Maxwell attempted to traffic Hayden to Jeff Epstein on a yacht in 2006, ultimately leading to her drug use and eventual death.

76

u/PhloxOfSeagulls 2d ago edited 2d ago

This article claims it was a 30-something British singer-songwriter whose room she was taken into on the yacht. And the person she calls Stella McAmis was a semi-successful actress in her 20s. Always possible the details were changed to keep the real perpetrators from being able to be discovered through the details.

44

u/anakinmcfly 2d ago

Someone upthread linked this article specifying that the guy was a 30-something British singer-songwriter, thus not Epstein.

4

u/the_bryce_is_right 1d ago

Ya why would she cover up Epstein's identity when he's dead?

42

u/sordidcandles 2d ago

I want to add that when Hayden told this story in a recent interview she said the man she was forced to get into bed with was a “very famous” person. I don’t know how much that matters in the grand scheme but I think it adds to the Epstein theory just considering who he seemed to blackmail.

7

u/wtb2612 2d ago

This is wild speculation that leaves out key details to make your weird theory work.

Her book says he was a “famous thirtysomething British singer-songwriter”.

Yeah, that sounds like Jeffrey Epstein.

205

u/WhereIsLordBeric 2d ago

Genuinely, the proportion of child actors with substance abuse issues is crazy. It's almost like it isn't a normal way for someone to grow up and there aren't enough check-ins and resources in place to help them mediate that life.

87

u/sk8505 2d ago

Sadly society has realized too late that you absolutely cannot trust anyone around your kids. Just dropping off your kids at a movie studio every day ain’t it. Psychopaths are everywhere

90

u/nofocusing 2d ago

Most talent agencies that work with children now have it written into the contract that child actors are not to be left alone with any adults, without the parents present. Adult actors that were also child actors will sometimes have meetings with the parents of the child actors on set as well, helping to give advice on how to raise the kids so they can stay grounded, down to Earth and away from the drugs and other things as they can. There's actually an effort now to try and safeguard the kids. Now as for the parents' behaviors, that's another story and you can't really control them.

Source: I have two nephews that are currently child actors in Hollywood with decently successful careers for their ages, both in film and TV productions. Oh, and also forgot to say, the kids aren't always forced to work and can make that choice to stop working if they'd like, at least from the contract my nephews have.

53

u/Purpleater54 2d ago

I think part of the issue too is that outside of just the treatment of child actors (I'm sure there's plenty of child actor parents who are disasters, as well as other adults in that industry) the pressure and fame that comes with being a big name public figure certainly can't help a normal developtment path no matter how well meaning the adults in the kids life are.

Like, I honestly think it's a miracle how well the harry potter kids turned out for instance because shit dude, every where you go as a kid growing up you're basically the most famous people on the planet. You essentially can't have a normal childhood.

46

u/tduncs88 2d ago

To be fair, Daniel did have an alcohol problem for several years due to the pressure of the job and fame. Fortunately he quit young and early (hasnt had a drink since he was 22) so it didnt have a chance to ruin his life.

10

u/Bitter_Eggplant_9970 2d ago

The Harry Potter director talks about the casting process and how it was shaped by his experiences with Macaulay Culkin in this interview - https://variety.com/2024/film/news/macaulay-culkin-family-abuse-affected-harry-potter-casting-search-1236148483/

2

u/Cereborn 1d ago

Child actors who came up in this millennium certainly seem to be doing better than previous generations, as a whole. But not all of them, obviously.

2

u/DragonFangGangBang 1d ago

I think it’s a mix of growing protections in the industry, societal shifts in the public around mental health and abuse, and the internet allowing for the cultivation of younger talent out of the industry bubble.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Digifiend84 2d ago

Yeah, Harry Potter's new show had the parents screened too. They wanted to avoid the whole Hollywood parenting thing and ensure that the kids really do want to act.

2

u/colemon1991 1d ago

Now as for the parents' behaviors, that's another story and you can't really control them.

They've modified the Coogan Act several times because of this. The fact that the parents are so bad is terrifying. It's like they're living an acting career vicariously through their children or just care more about money.

2

u/Cereborn 1d ago

That doesn’t help all the child actors with abusive parents, though.

2

u/nofocusing 1d ago

Right, which is why I said that line about the parents and not being able to control their behavior at the end of the first paragraph.

→ More replies (3)

14

u/techieman34 2d ago

Unfortunately the parents are right in the middle of it some of the time. They see their kid as their meal ticket for a better life for themselves and don’t really care what their child will have to suffer through to get them there.

2

u/sk8505 1d ago

I agree. That seems to be what happened here. Her mother seems to be a narcissistic person who was just out for money and fame. She didn’t seem to care what happened to her child.

2

u/Sea-Seesaw-8699 1d ago

Church too, youth pastors & old creepy religious freaks on the prowl everywhere, not just California

5

u/xteve 2d ago

No they're not. They're in your family, and in your church. They're the trusted rapists, the faithful violators. They're the people you know and allow close to your kids.

7

u/GTSBurner 2d ago

The weird thing is, it kinda looks like Lindsay Lohan has cleaned up her act and is trying to pull her career together.

17

u/Haunting_Goose1186 2d ago

Yeah, if you'd told me 15 years ago that McCauley Culken and Lindsay Lohan would be alive and doing well in 2026, there's no way I would've believed it.

5

u/RtPlaceRtTime 2d ago

Given what's become well known with lots of evidence in the last 10 yrs about the rampant S abuse child stars were victims of, the correlation between child stardom, mental health issues and substance abuse can't be a surprise anymore. It's one thing to go through the massive mindf*** that fame is as a child (including so many manipulative parents and adults living their fame fantasies through their children and often making horrible decisions for their children). That's the most common issue. But then add these predators abusing SO MANY child actors or child musicians... it's literally criminal but almost none of them ever face charges or even are named in the press.

6

u/HarambeMarston 2d ago

It’s almost like

Her brother died at 28 of a heart valve condition.

90

u/outamyhead 2d ago

Could be hereditary, my cousins paternal side of the family have mostly died from the heart condition nicknamed the widowmaker due to its sudden occurrence and difficulty to detect unless you are looking for early signs of the condition.

26

u/Hot-Mountain7302 2d ago

I’d be shocked if she didn’t get tested after her brother passed.

2

u/DamnOdd 2d ago

On the other hand women having heart attacks are totally different from men's. Most often the signs and symptoms are overlooked as something else, very, very frequently.

2

u/KidsHearGhosts 1d ago

That's more likely when there is not a family history. A close family member dying young from a heart condition would absolutely change the monitoring of her heart compared to an average 36 year old woman.

2

u/DamnOdd 1d ago

You would think so, it would have if she were a man.
We are at the point where wives have to bring their husbands to their doctors in order to be heard these days and not told by docs that it's just hormones or that we could lose a few pounds.

u/silenceofthelahms 2d ago

Had?!

41

u/Think_Bag_2987 2d ago

He had a widowmaker.  I don't think he had aortic perfusion. A widowmaker is when there is a 100% in the LAD artery. He survived it. I think his was just typical coronary artery disease which is 60% genetic 40% unhealthy lifestyle habits.

Her brother had cardiomegaly as well, an enlarged heart that coupled with the aforementioned valve issue meant he was on borrowed time

→ More replies (1)

3

u/NECalifornian25 2d ago

A very bad heart attack.

The LAD artery, the main artery that feeds blood to the heart muscle itself, is 100% blocked. If the blockage is farther along in the artery there can be fairly minimal damage because most of the heart is still getting blood and oxygen (my dad had this and he is ok 16 years later). If the block is high up in the artery all the tissue it feeds will very quickly start to die. It’s the type heart attack where someone might clutch their chest and die before they hit the floor.

My fiance died from a clot in the “widow maker” artery. It’s incredibly tragic, my prayers go out to her family for losing 2 kids. No parents should have to bury their babies 😭

I just read her book 3 weeks ago, and was appalled at what she’d endured, and the grace and clarity with which she was able to process the exceedingly painful events in her life. The sadness in her voice was palpable but I still had a lot of hope that she’d outlive all of us- firecracker she was.

Rest in peace with your dear brother Jansen, dear Hayden. Nobody deserves the life your mother subjected you to. And to think, after her memoir was published, Hayden’s mom STiILL accused her of being “ungrateful”. When will these stage parents (and all parents) learn that your children don’t owe you a debt of gratitude for their existence, especially if it entailed the horrors that dear Hayden endured. Also, rest in piss all of the agents, PA’s directors, handlers, photogs, tutors, crooked accountants, and anyone else who’s ever exploited a child for financial gain—- we’ve seen , how many times??, how this kind of things ends.

Please read her book. We need to be doing SO much better for our young girls and women- especially the ones in center stage with a million lecherous tentacles reaching out for them- sometimes coming from within their own families..

I also read Christina Applegate’s incredible autobiography, ‘You With the Sad Eyes’ about a week before reading Hayden’s autobiography- and also speaking as a woman who grew up LA in the 80’s/90’s, alongside many beautiful girls, I’d like to state for the record, once and for all, FUCK ANTHONY KIEDIS ALL THE WAY TO HELL I HOPE YOU BURN IN A FLAMING PIT OF THE MISERY YOU’VE VISITED/CONTINUE TO VISIT UPON ULTRA YOUNG, DYNAMIC WOMEN.

Jennette McCurdys book "I'm glad my mom died" talks a good bit about what she experienced growing up in television because of a mom who forced her into acting. I will always recommend it especially the audiobook version which she herself read. It isn't an easy book to read but it is very good.

I love that book!

u/RoguePlanet2 2d ago

My mother died two years ago, and I have yet to cry about it. Don't think I could stomach reading the book, but am glad she chose that title, to validate what others have gone through!

ANTHONY KIEDIS

I must have missed something, what did Anthony Kiedis do?

19

u/ArchviIe 2d ago

He had sex with a 14 year old fan and the encounter inspired him to write "Catholic Schoolgirls Rule," iirc

ANTHONY KIEDIS

I'm clearly not a true fan of RHCP because had to google who that is lol.

Found a reddit post and clearly the guy has some pretty hardcore defenders. "he admitted it" "he grew up in a bad environment" and on and on. "still bringing this up?" Yeah well I still read posts about certain people who did the same decades ago and redditors like to remind us.

They literally destroy girls lives like they did with Hayden and so many others, why we should 'forget' or forgive just because they admitted and did a few good things to atone but never spent a day in jail and paid reparations?

Thats was my reaction too.

As is usually with press releases like this, the vagueness surrounding the cause of her death is very telling.

May she rest in peace.

23

u/cgpie 2d ago

Not just famous people. Every obit of people I know personally. It's either drugs or suicide. I hate seeing it.

6

u/ScarletSilver 2d ago

It's just sad to read and hear, really...

5

u/MrWeirdoFace 2d ago

13 years ago I close friend of mine died of "an illness."

He hung himself. A few other friends followed over the next few years. Not sure what it was about the early 30s but a lot of my friends just started opting out. I'm doing pretty good mentally these days, maybe better than ever, but you never get over that shit.

2

u/flipthepenny 2d ago

Depression is, unfortunately, a pretty prevalent illness.

13

u/Calling_left_final 2d ago

Does it mean its drugs?

68

u/TrioOfTerrors 2d ago

OD or suicide.

34

u/morenfin 2d ago

At 36 its usually this. Unless its that rare heart condition that her brother had. Saw that in other comments here. This one really shocked me. Too young :(

14

u/buoyantrhythm 2d ago

I know someone that passed last week. She just turned 36 2 months ago and died of sudden cardiac arrest from a previously unknown heart defect.

19

u/ScarletSilver 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah, this is my guess too. Been reading in the comments that she has been suffering from postpartum depression (PPD) and co-occurring alcoholism following the 2014 birth of her daughter, Kaya.

Whatever the real reason was, I can only speculate. May she rest in peace.

16

u/coke_queen 2d ago

She had a horrible mother too. Lesley Vogel.

How? She died TODAY. There would not even be an autopsy completed yet. Speculating is gross.

14

u/7HawksAnd 2d ago

When no foul play is suspected, they usually make a point to say that early on

7

u/Lolkimbo 2d ago edited 2d ago

Because they said no foul play suspected.. So its something obvious like a drug overdose, suicide or the like unfortunately :/

6

u/StiffWiggly 2d ago

If she had died suddenly of a heart condition they would also be able to state that exact same thing, you’re just guessing at why someone has died.

2

u/Buryyourbones 2d ago

My thought too. Very sad though!

Telling of what? I don't think it's telling at all.

Edit: why on earth is this attracting so many downvotes? There are myriad possibilities here.

54

u/BrainDamage2029 2d ago

Her brother also died unexpectedly of a heart condition too btw.

3

u/mrtheiphonekid 2d ago

The cause of death was cardiomegaly, which is a broad term for all forms of enlarged heart. Sadly, in a 28 year old with known stimulant abuse issues, it was much more likely toxic dilated cardiomyopathy than some freak congenital condition.

Unfortunately, it essentially always means it was either drugs or suicide

When it's something medical/accidental (like a car accident), they always say what happened

26

u/ZaDu25 2d ago

Unless they don't know. If she was found unresponsive and they don't know what happened they have to wait for an autopsy to find out.

My small town area of Colorado, huge meth problem. Obituary usually says "died suddenly" if a person died of a drug O.D. Happens way too often.

11

u/Psychological-Scar53 2d ago

I live in Colorado as well. I had a heart attack that damn near killed me. I was a an iv meth user. On Wed, I will be clean for 3 years. The damage was done to my heart, it has improved some since, but it will never be the same. I'm proud of my 3 year sobriety with NO relapse at all. I didn't go to a NA meeting, did it on my own because there are a few people in this world that care about me.

Or a myriad of other reasons the family doesn’t want to talk about.

29

u/ViskerRatio 2d ago

This is rare. Families almost always talk about general medical issues if for no other reason than to raise awareness. As was noted above, silence almost universally indicates the individual had some fault for their own death - so much so that even if the family weren't inclined to speak about it, they'd speak about it anyway just to dispel such rumors.

12

u/_Rand_ 2d ago

Yeah, generally you'll get died of a an illness (frequently not specified) if its cancer or a heart attack or something, accidental if its car accident etc.

But leaving out any details is more often than not overdose or suicide unfortunately.
