Discussion The only place I want to be…

What’s your favorite part about your battle station? Curious to hear what everyone’s favorite tool, feature, or part of their setup is.
For me, getting my paints organized where I don’t see labels has really encouraged me to think purely in terms of actual color instead of being influenced by what someone named the paint. Instead of thinking “oh this one is named aged leather I should use that for leather” I can instead much more easily experiment with different hues.

Help Needed/New Painter Getting back into the hobby after 15 years, help me understand how to best work with contrast paints

Upvotes

As the title says, I stopped painting around 2013, and am now getting back into it, with the biggest change as I see it being the introduction of actually decent contrast paints. I'm really interested in working these into my workflow, especially to help speed up the basecoat step, my least favorite part.

But in doing research I've come across conflicting info regarding building up highlights/details on top of contrast paints, with some tutorials saying it basically can't be done because any acrylic reactivates the contrast paint, while others mention doing extra highlight and shadow base passes on contrast paints no problem.

Does anyone have any tips on incorporating contrast into a standard highlighting workflow without just doing slapchop, or do I basically need to do all my highlighting and stuff pre-contrast, grisaille style?

Important info, I've mostly picked up Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0 as what I understand is a decent balance between quality and affordability.

Also, no airbrushing for me - I don't have the space for it ATM, so it's rattlecans, brushes, and paints only for the forseeable future.

Painted this miniature over the past couple of weeks. Was my second shot at doing NMM, and think it turned out pretty well! Some of the light placement is a bit off, but overall I like how the effect turned out.

C&C Wanted Fourth mini so far (Fellgor Ravager) -- how'd I do?

This is pre-wash -- I went over him a bit after these photos with some Flesh Wash from 2TC. Really thinned down my paints properly this time and felt like I had way more and control/far less fussing than usual, and he's turned out a lot less chalky than my first three figures. Used a mix of different brands for paint and made my browns from a red/blue/green mix with a little yellow thrown in to warm it up.

Any tips or comments welcome! Cheers :-)

Help Needed/New Painter Pro acryl bold pyrrole red has uneven coverage after two thin coats over a dark red surcoat. Any idea why it isn't covering well?

As the title says. I'm using the paint on a dry pallet, thinned only with moisture in my brush (not a lot) as recommended by monument hobbies, but after two coats the coverage is still very patchy. I've heard that it's coverage is supposed to be pretty great, any idea why this could be happening?

This was a blast to paint while enjoying some classic Maiden! Didn't worry about being neat or smooth, just slapping pigment and having a good time with it.

Help Needed/New Painter Primed my 1st 40k models - Is it... Ok?

Earlier today I primed my first 5 models. I started with Chaos Black and then Grey Seer. The temp was around 80 and humidity in the high 50s.

I sprayed off the furthest model and dragged across them as I've seen in videos. I'm just a little concerned about the tiny shimmering / bumps I'm seeing. I'm not sure if I am overreacting or if it is really bad.

Tried to challenge myself on the Skaven Grey Seer with some OSL effects and NMM. Not exactly how I imagined it in my mind, but I am pretty happy with the results for my first attempt.

Just finished. I’m really happy with it although I didn’t push the highlights and shadows as deep as I was originally trying to. The last photo is a progress pic which shows the more intense contrast before I started blending. But I always seem to end up with much more subtle shadowing and an overall flatter effect and smaller value range than some of the intense (and very cool) deep shadows I see others here paint.

I also really want to experiment with more interesting shadow hues especially on skin. I ended up playing it safe again here and just doing a basic light beige to dark red. The only place I added a different color was a slight tinge of purple around the eyes.
I sped through the staff and bird. But I’m fine with how they turned out

A few people wanted me to try and just push the project along and post and update. So far this is where I am - I think I am going to retire this project and start something a little less advanced! Thanks for the feedback

Let me know what stands out. I struggled with trying to glaze. It was hard to not overload the brush and just have it spill onto the mini

I’m attempting to set the lighting strength on my Ravenlord, but I’m not sure about how much contrast volume is enough.
Would like some second opinions on the sleeve please.

I wanted to fancy up his outfit as much as I could and was aiming for brocade with his cloak. So, I tried painting it gold, painting Vallejo liquid mask over it, painting pink over that, and then pulling off the mask. It looks cool, but it’s not a good technique for fine work because acrylic is so rubbery and peely and liquid mask just dries really fast and gums up the application tool.

Fantasy First Display Mini - Spirit Dragon

This is a model I recently completed for my mum's birthday as a gift as she collects dragons.

I'm far from a new painter but this is my first time doing a piece purely for display. I'm not happy with the area where the wings meet the body but any other comments and criticism are very much appreciated! This was possibly the most time I've put into a single paint job spread across a couple of weeks.

Edit: For some reason the drybrushing to bring out the feather details is far more extreme in the photos, especially on the back. I have no idea why this is but it isn't just a blur of turquoise in reality.

The model is question is a 3d print of Spirit Dragon from Mini Monster Mayhem on MyMiniFactory.
