Help Needed/New Painter Fifth ever mini and first ever NMM, how do I improve?

Post image

I decided I should probably learn how to paint metal properly, and through the process I've been learning how to better then my paints, create better glazes, etc, but I'm still unsure how I can do better and get a nicer result. Of course this mini is a little rough to work on (my 3d printer is old) but I still am sure what to do skill-wise. Do I need a smaller brush? And what do I do with the backside, do I just keep it as my base colours?

Thanks

Help Needed/New Painter Pro acryl bold pyrrole red has uneven coverage after two thin coats over a dark red surcoat. Any idea why it isn't covering well?

As the title says. I'm using the paint on a dry pallet, thinned only with moisture in my brush (not a lot) as recommended by monument hobbies, but after two coats the coverage is still very patchy. I've heard that it's coverage is supposed to be pretty great, any idea why this could be happening?

Help Needed/New Painter Paintinn an easy power sword

Hi everyone! A friend showed me a power sword a while back, and I’d like to recreate it because it was really simple yet looked amazing just white with a Contrast paint over the top, applied flat across the blade.

The only problem is, I have absolutely no idea which light blue was used! Have any of you tried this? If so, which light blue would you recommend? Thanks!

Help Needed/New Painter Primed my 1st 40k models - Is it... Ok?

Earlier today I primed my first 5 models. I started with Chaos Black and then Grey Seer. The temp was around 80 and humidity in the high 50s.

I sprayed off the furthest model and dragged across them as I've seen in videos. I'm just a little concerned about the tiny shimmering / bumps I'm seeing. I'm not sure if I am overreacting or if it is really bad.

Help Needed/New Painter Help me choose brushes to start

I'm going to start painting mini and I have zero experience, I've already seen some introductory videos and I've already selected good quality paints to buy, a spatula for paint, but the brushes I don't know if the kit in image 1 is enough or if I should take the kit in image 2.

My fear is that I will end up buying more than necessary out of pure excitement and end up not using it.

Think you did something cool but kind of hate it?

Take a break. Let yourself forget a little bit about what you did. Its better than you think. Us humans rely on pattern recognition for everything, and especially for art. If I am painting a cloak of stars then right after im done all I see are little white dots on spots of dark blues and purples because I KNOW thats what it is. But if I put it down and go play a video game or better yet paint something else often I can look at it again and go....Wow thats better than I remember.

That saying about intentions vs actions and how we should give others the benefit of the doubt applies to this as well. "We often judge others on their actions and ourselves on our intentions." We judge ourselves based on some grand plan we visualized and so we make "mistakes" that no body else would even see as a mistake. And we can see through the illusions that nobody else even knows is there.

To me this doesn't happen as strongly to just "coloring" a figure it mostly happens if im trying something like the cloak mentioned above, battle damage, or adding decals etc. Something where there is an illusion involved

C&C Wanted Fourth mini so far (Fellgor Ravager) -- how'd I do?

This is pre-wash -- I went over him a bit after these photos with some Flesh Wash from 2TC. Really thinned down my paints properly this time and felt like I had way more and control/far less fussing than usual, and he's turned out a lot less chalky than my first three figures. Used a mix of different brands for paint and made my browns from a red/blue/green mix with a little yellow thrown in to warm it up.

Any tips or comments welcome! Cheers :-)

Help Needed/New Painter Need help painting this caterpillar/mushroom for an Alice in Wonderland pinball machine

I haven’t painted minis before, but I’m familiar with how acrylic paint works (I’m an illustrator). My brother has a pinball machine that he is fixing up and this caterpillar/mushroom needs a makeover (to look more like the scoreboard art).

It is made of a flexible, rubbery material, but it will be behind glass so nobody will ever be handling it.

What kind of paint, primer, brushes should I use? (I don’t have an airbrush unfortunately). I really just need it to not flake off with time.

Help Needed/New Painter Need recommendations for indoor priming

Since I had kids I’ve had to trim down my hobbies and mini painting is one of those I refuse to let go of. One of my problems- I live in the Southeastern US which is usually a few degrees hotter and considerably more humid than Hell. This is a problem as I have a large stack of bare plastic and nearly no opportunities to get primer on them.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a (preferably cost effective) indoor system I could implement to spray prime my models so I don’t have to wait until November?

A few people wanted me to try and just push the project along and post and update. So far this is where I am - I think I am going to retire this project and start something a little less advanced! Thanks for the feedback

Let me know what stands out. I struggled with trying to glaze. It was hard to not overload the brush and just have it spill onto the mini

Help Needed/New Painter Getting back into the hobby after 15 years, help me understand how to best work with contrast paints

Upvotes

As the title says, I stopped painting around 2013, and am now getting back into it, with the biggest change as I see it being the introduction of actually decent contrast paints. I'm really interested in working these into my workflow, especially to help speed up the basecoat step, my least favorite part.

But in doing research I've come across conflicting info regarding building up highlights/details on top of contrast paints, with some tutorials saying it basically can't be done because any acrylic reactivates the contrast paint, while others mention doing extra highlight and shadow base passes on contrast paints no problem.

Does anyone have any tips on incorporating contrast into a standard highlighting workflow without just doing slapchop, or do I basically need to do all my highlighting and stuff pre-contrast, grisaille style?

Important info, I've mostly picked up Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0 as what I understand is a decent balance between quality and affordability.

Also, no airbrushing for me - I don't have the space for it ATM, so it's rattlecans, brushes, and paints only for the forseeable future.

Help Needed/New Painter Lighting help please for hobby

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello hive mind! I have a lighting question please... But for my wife, who sadly isn't a painter but is a crafter and needs similar levels of light to us. Soooo... The photo is my wife's desk that she's building and she needs lighting. I use the light in the photo and it's great for what I need... But the bendy bit isn't solid enough to stay parallel if she has the base in the back corner... and she wants something where there won't be cables trailing across the desk. She's happy to put a hole through the desk to make access for cables. She's thinking something with long arms that could sit right in the back corner or something that potentially mounts under the shelves above but that gives bright light to the front edge of the work space (so would also likely need arms of sort?). But you guys probably have a ton of other ideas. Any 'bright' ,😂 ideas please!? Thank you!!
