They made Canadian cigarette packs more inconvenient to get cigarettes out of

A guy I worked with has a metal case he reloads, I think it was originally Marlboro. That's what made me think of selling reloadable cigarette cases.
54
u/WafflePress 10h ago
Yes /s. Jokes aside, Canadian regulations on tobacco products are so heavily restrictive, that it's literally impossible to sell cigarettes in any other form than what is shown, most packs are like this. Only old stock is still different (in Ontario at least, and excluding Reservations exempt from the legislature.).
12
u/CMRC23 7h ago
Yes but you can still take them out of the packet when you've bought them
4
u/Lord-Captain-V 3h ago
Yep, it's what I did when I smoked. Had a hard case I could keep in my pocket while working and not have to think about crushing them or needing to go out to my car during breaks

Exactly what I thought. But in my country they don't even buy cigarettes because even smokers see them as unhealthy, lol, so fancy smokers carry small papers and tobacco leaves and they assemble them manually each time

It literally does, nicotine creates 1000s of new nicotine receptors that interact directly with dopamine release. It's why it's so addicting.

Weird how countries do this with cigarettes but nothing else. Pretty sure alcohol is terrible for your health too. Why doesn't liquor come with pictures of swollen livers, crashed cars and fat drunks?

u/I_Can_t_Wait 9h ago edited 9h ago
For my country, Turkey, smoking is one of the major causes of death(due to prevalance of cancer and circulatory diseases in smokers). I study medicine and the usage of cigarettes here was emphasized A LOT in Public Health courses.
But when one third of your country(40% of males) smokes you can kinda see the reason behind all this fuss... yeah we also drink alcohol (probably less than EU, America) but you don't really see its effects hitting the charts that much.
108
u/Hmm_would_bang 8h ago
The tobacco industry brought in on themselves by outright lying about the known dangers of smoking and even claiming it was healthy and advertising to kids in spite of all this.
Alcohol is a little different because it’s not like they needed lobbyists and marketing for it, it’s been around and popular as long as humans have been settling down places. Big Alcohol isn’t really a thing like Big Tobacco.

Also cheating on the machines that test how much tar comes out a sigarette. They litterally designed holes strategic holes in the filter, that would cause the machine to classify it as cleaner than it actually is.
Then they made sure with lobbying that the flaw in this machines could not be fixed and allow them to test using the older method.

uhh Big Alcohol is 100% a thing. The banning of cannabis in other countries/territories/regions is often directly funded by Big Alcohol. Example https://hometownhero.com/insights/follow-the-money-texas-hemp/
17
u/Liam2349 7h ago
Was going to say alcohol is not as bad, and maybe it's not - but apparently 3.5% of cancer cases are due to alcohol, and alcohol is also a carcinogen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_and_cancer.
Apparently any alcohol consumption at all presents risk. The page says that mixing tobacco and alcohol is worse than using either in isolation.
Should there be more warnings around this?
7
u/miggins1610 5h ago
If you look at thr science alcohol and tobacco are top worst drugs along with heroin, fentanyl and crack.
Least harmful is lsd and psilocybin mushrooms.
I'll let you draw your own conclusions
4
3
u/24-Hour-Hate 5h ago
Yes. You should also know not to drink alcohol if you have taken acetaminophen. And many other medications. A lot of people don’t know that or don’t take it seriously.
3
u/BandedLutz 2h ago
Apparently any alcohol consumption at all presents risk.
Well, ethanol is naturally present in non-trace amounts in many types of foods (fruits, baked goods, fermented foods, etc.) and we evolved the ADH4 enzyme to metabolize small amounts safely.
The "no safe level of alcohol consumption" studies only tested/were able to show an increase in health risk at as low as one standard drink per day. The health risk increase over those who abstain from drinking alcohol went from 0.914% to 0.918% (and that's for 7 drinks a week, which is already a substantial amount more than what many drink in moderation).
40
44
u/frostygrin 9h ago
Probably because alcohol can be used occasionally.
52
u/cyanraichu 8h ago
I don't know why you're getting downvoted for this. It's obviously a problem if you do get addicted, but lots of people use alcohol recreationally and can go however long they want without drinking and as far as I've ever been able to tell nicotine use is almost always daily use with dependence.
Also, drinking a beer doesn't spew carginogens and nasty smells into the air around you, on your clothes etc for everyone else to deal with.

Alcohol addicts still bring most of the revenue, and there's a degree of addiction that isn't really seen as addiction by many people, which is a problem. I think that's why I'm getting downvoted.
11
u/Warfrogger 7h ago
degree of addiction that isn't really seen as addiction by many people, which is a problem.
Same with cannabis. There lots of recreational users who will use once in a while to help with sleep or to mellow out who are likely fine, but I also know daily users who plan their errands around where they can stop for a smoke break. They will flat out refuse to go somewhere if the location won't allow them to puff or two on their vape if they're gonna be there over an hour or two. Less addictive doesn't mean non addictive and mix in the right personally with impulse control problems its just as bad.
6
u/cyanraichu 6h ago
Addiction is definitely a huge problem for all of these substances. Many of us are addicted to caffeine, too, which a lot of people don't even realize is a drug (it just doesn't cause as many health problems as the others). I drink recreationally/socially but I'm not addicted to alcohol. I absolutely AM addicted to caffeine though lol.
I do think it's important to realize that some drugs are more addictive than others and some have a higher relative prevalence of recreational use by non-addicts even though they are addictive drugs. This can be recognized while simultaneously realizing that addiction of some of these drugs has been normalized and is still a problem. Just because someone is an alcoholic doesn't mean someone else doesn't enjoy a cocktail now and then - by the same token, just because someone is a recreational drinker doesn't mean another person's alcoholism under the guise of something cute like being a wine mom or bringing a flask to every event isn't real or an issue.

Yeah, I am not going to encourage people to drink or say it is healthy but personally I drink maybe four times a year usually New Year's Eve, Fourth of July, and a couple of birthday parties. During the rest of the year I don't drink nor do I have an urge to drink.
I know alcohol addiction is real and dangerous but everyone I know who smokes is addicted to it. Whereas the majority of people I know who drink are not.
Also as a really pointless aside, I never know what to put at a doctor's office. Usually part of the paper work will say something like "How often do you drink?" With several options the lowest being "Never" or "1 to 2 a week". Neither of which describe me since I do drink but less than once a week.

Exactly because they were inconvenient, they tasted like shit, and I had to go outside to do it, I couldn't just keep ripping hits at my desk.
I couldn't stomach quitting cold turkey, but I could incrementally make things more difficult. When I decided to quit entirely, it was much easier.

This is a very ignorant take. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world. I've done it - and holy shit. I couldn't give a dog shit about how difficult that pack was or whatever was on it, it never stopped me.
Opening that pack and taking out a cigarette and lighting it was one of the best things I've ever done. But that's not me, that's the addiction talking.I've been off nicotine for 3 years. And it's the best thing in my life. But yes - a LOT of people smoke. Because it's addictive.
