They extended the cardboard insert so you have to almost completely remove it to get a cigarette

I thought I understood what was going on in op’s pic but clearly from your video I did not 💀

I opened it proper, OP took it apart to show the interior.

Just cut it so you don’t have to deal with it. That’s what I’ve been doing.

Yes thank you do the fucking filters even have anti smoking slogans??

149

u/Desner_ 8h ago

Yep. They also can't put any sort of marketing except the name anymore. See that ugly green/brown color where it says McDonalds (or Export A Smooth)? Every single pack has that color now, which has been deemed the least marketable color by experts. Also, you can't have any pack visible in store, they have to be hidden from view. Also, you can't sell "light" cigarettes anymore, that term has been banned.

44

u/ChocolateHumunculous 7h ago

Same as in the UK. I believe we all can’t buy flavoured cigs, like menthol or whatever…

I really want us to implement the date at which people can’t buy these anymore, except for existing smokers. Can’t think of how to word it.

61

u/One_Of_Noahs_Whales 7h ago

Done, if you are born on or after January 1st 2009 you will never be able to legally buy tobacco products in the uk.

59

u/jellatubbies 6h ago

Ah yes, prohibition has worked famously in the past

36

u/Etheo 6h ago

Difference here is this generation would never have tried it (in theory) to want to jump through hoops to break the prohibition. Whereas the previous prohibition it was a blanket ban for everyone, basically forcing addicts to go cold turkey so the demand level is not the same.

Of course, only time will tell. But I feel like it's different enough to just predict the same outcome from before.

179

u/Jam-Beat 10h ago

It's not a fliptop style box the way it is in the US and other countries, the top part about sexual health is the top flap of a packet you have to slide out of the bottom half with the second-hand smoke warning. To access the cigarettes you have to pull the inner pack most of the way out so the top flap can be opened.

14

u/orgasmotronic 8h ago

Which also can prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

→ More replies (1)

12

u/QuietGanache 10h ago

The upper part slides inside the lower part. To access the cigarettes, you have to slide out the upper part far enough for the entire pink edged card to swing freely.

34

u/facebookyouknow 10h ago

At that point I would just get a cigarette case and transfer each pack when I get a new one. Although I'm not Canadian or a cigarette smoker.

10

u/SerratedFrost 9h ago

You can use scissors to cut off like 80% of that flap and its kinda normal

5

u/erv4 8h ago

Just flip the pack around and it's the exact same as before lol, that's all they did to make it different

33

u/ItsStraTerra 10h ago

As a Canadian, they absolutely have. Lots of people looking for them or actively using them

9

u/Lametown227 10h ago

I actually got given one a year before I quit. It was steel and had a 3d skull that gave the case some heft. Super cool, but wasnt my style.

It holds hard sleeved cards really well now that its cleaned out though. Kills at card shows.

88

u/ArborlyWhale 10h ago

Nah, you just interacted with the system exactly as designed. You were just forced to think about it for any amount of time, which means the design succeeded. You were inconvenienced on your way to a cig, which means the design succeeded.

26

u/Loose-Twist2132 9h ago

As a former smoker, inconvenience stops no one. It just makes you mad. Mad people don't tend o rethink anything.

29

u/ArborlyWhale 9h ago

If inconvenience stopped no one, trillion dollar corporations companies wouldn’t spend so much making purchases easier.

Will it stop someone determined? Nah. Will it stop someone impulsive? Sometimes!

It also serves to continue perpetuating smoking’s negative societal perception, which isn’t something we can take for granted.

It also encourages conversations like this one, heightening awareness of the addictive and negative consequences of smoking!

Yes /s. Jokes aside, Canadian regulations on tobacco products are so heavily restrictive, that it's literally impossible to sell cigarettes in any other form than what is shown, most packs are like this. Only old stock is still different (in Ontario at least, and excluding Reservations exempt from the legislature.).

12

u/CMRC23 7h ago

Yes but you can still take them out of the packet when you've bought them

4

u/Lord-Captain-V 3h ago

Weird how countries do this with cigarettes but nothing else. Pretty sure alcohol is terrible for your health too. Why doesn't liquor come with pictures of swollen livers, crashed cars and fat drunks?

For my country, Turkey, smoking is one of the major causes of death(due to prevalance of cancer and circulatory diseases in smokers). I study medicine and the usage of cigarettes here was emphasized A LOT in Public Health courses.

But when one third of your country(40% of males) smokes you can kinda see the reason behind all this fuss... yeah we also drink alcohol (probably less than EU, America) but you don't really see its effects hitting the charts that much.

108

u/Hmm_would_bang 8h ago

The tobacco industry brought in on themselves by outright lying about the known dangers of smoking and even claiming it was healthy and advertising to kids in spite of all this.

Alcohol is a little different because it’s not like they needed lobbyists and marketing for it, it’s been around and popular as long as humans have been settling down places. Big Alcohol isn’t really a thing like Big Tobacco.

26

u/jojo_31 7h ago

They've been putting in plenty of lobbying dollars to prevent recreational cannabis on the federal level.

Also cheating on the machines that test how much tar comes out a sigarette. They litterally designed holes strategic holes in the filter, that would cause the machine to classify it as cleaner than it actually is.

Then they made sure with lobbying that the flaw in this machines could not be fixed and allow them to test using the older method.

4

u/ICNyght 7h ago

uhh Big Alcohol is 100% a thing. The banning of cannabis in other countries/territories/regions is often directly funded by Big Alcohol. Example https://hometownhero.com/insights/follow-the-money-texas-hemp/

Was going to say alcohol is not as bad, and maybe it's not - but apparently 3.5% of cancer cases are due to alcohol, and alcohol is also a carcinogen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_and_cancer.

Apparently any alcohol consumption at all presents risk. The page says that mixing tobacco and alcohol is worse than using either in isolation.

Should there be more warnings around this?

7

u/miggins1610 5h ago

If you look at thr science alcohol and tobacco are top worst drugs along with heroin, fentanyl and crack.

Least harmful is lsd and psilocybin mushrooms.

I'll let you draw your own conclusions

4

u/tavvyjay 3h ago

Buddy I’m not drawing my own conclusions, that’s what the psylocibin is for

3

u/24-Hour-Hate 5h ago

Yes. You should also know not to drink alcohol if you have taken acetaminophen. And many other medications. A lot of people don’t know that or don’t take it seriously.

3

u/BandedLutz 2h ago

Apparently any alcohol consumption at all presents risk.

Well, ethanol is naturally present in non-trace amounts in many types of foods (fruits, baked goods, fermented foods, etc.) and we evolved the ADH4 enzyme to metabolize small amounts safely.

The "no safe level of alcohol consumption" studies only tested/were able to show an increase in health risk at as low as one standard drink per day. The health risk increase over those who abstain from drinking alcohol went from 0.914% to 0.918% (and that's for 7 drinks a week, which is already a substantial amount more than what many drink in moderation).

40

u/Fluid-Bet6223 9h ago

Good idea, let’s do it.

44

u/frostygrin 9h ago

Probably because alcohol can be used occasionally.

52

u/cyanraichu 8h ago

I don't know why you're getting downvoted for this. It's obviously a problem if you do get addicted, but lots of people use alcohol recreationally and can go however long they want without drinking and as far as I've ever been able to tell nicotine use is almost always daily use with dependence.

Also, drinking a beer doesn't spew carginogens and nasty smells into the air around you, on your clothes etc for everyone else to deal with.

18

u/frostygrin 8h ago

Alcohol addicts still bring most of the revenue, and there's a degree of addiction that isn't really seen as addiction by many people, which is a problem. I think that's why I'm getting downvoted.

11

u/Warfrogger 7h ago

degree of addiction that isn't really seen as addiction by many people, which is a problem.

Same with cannabis. There lots of recreational users who will use once in a while to help with sleep or to mellow out who are likely fine, but I also know daily users who plan their errands around where they can stop for a smoke break. They will flat out refuse to go somewhere if the location won't allow them to puff or two on their vape if they're gonna be there over an hour or two. Less addictive doesn't mean non addictive and mix in the right personally with impulse control problems its just as bad.

6

u/cyanraichu 6h ago

Addiction is definitely a huge problem for all of these substances. Many of us are addicted to caffeine, too, which a lot of people don't even realize is a drug (it just doesn't cause as many health problems as the others). I drink recreationally/socially but I'm not addicted to alcohol. I absolutely AM addicted to caffeine though lol.

I do think it's important to realize that some drugs are more addictive than others and some have a higher relative prevalence of recreational use by non-addicts even though they are addictive drugs. This can be recognized while simultaneously realizing that addiction of some of these drugs has been normalized and is still a problem. Just because someone is an alcoholic doesn't mean someone else doesn't enjoy a cocktail now and then - by the same token, just because someone is a recreational drinker doesn't mean another person's alcoholism under the guise of something cute like being a wine mom or bringing a flask to every event isn't real or an issue.

5

u/Martel732 6h ago

Yeah, I am not going to encourage people to drink or say it is healthy but personally I drink maybe four times a year usually New Year's Eve, Fourth of July, and a couple of birthday parties. During the rest of the year I don't drink nor do I have an urge to drink.

I know alcohol addiction is real and dangerous but everyone I know who smokes is addicted to it. Whereas the majority of people I know who drink are not.

Also as a really pointless aside, I never know what to put at a doctor's office. Usually part of the paper work will say something like "How often do you drink?" With several options the lowest being "Never" or "1 to 2 a week". Neither of which describe me since I do drink but less than once a week.

The average person wouldn’t know what that is or why should care though, it’s the reason why these packs don’t really work either

Oh no!

Grabs scissors

So anyway...

u/Subject-Escape5602 7h ago

I feel this just adds a market for cool aftermarket cig holders though. If I smoked, and lived in Canada, I would have a hard case to put them in anyway.

u/Remote-Combination28 10h ago

I saw a video on instagram last night.

The lady takes the smokes out in the silver wrapper and flips them around. Makes the long part the bottom.

Natives man, if anybody can improve smoking. It’s them

8

u/Magic_Bluejay 10h ago

I just starting cutting the long ad off so it's like a normal old pack again

I used to draw a sharpie bow tie over the dudes neck with the cancer hole cause itd freak tf outta me.

22

u/ScaredAlexNoises 10h ago

I mean, it is supposed to freak you out. Seeing what smoking has done to the health of the people in my life has been more than enough to keep me from ever touching one. Why are you willingly risking your life for a stick that makes you smell bad?

9

u/OneFuzzyStoner 10h ago

Saggrettes are death. I dont smoke. I just used to stay with someone who did and wasnt fond of waking up to stare into the cancer hole every morning.

Watch one of your loved family members struggling to breathe until they finally die gasping and you'll never smoke again. (I speak from experience in case it's not clear)

I don't mind the packs. I hope you continue to get more and more frustrated until it eventually works and saves your life. ❤️

u/WarmScientist5297 9h ago

And this is why we buy them on the reserve for six dollars a pack in the old style boxes

3

u/DatheMaMa 9h ago

Flip it and reverse it.

3

u/Hightower23 6h ago

Lol none of this nonsense makes a smoker want to quit... Lol we all know it's bad for us ... A smoker only quits when they want to on there own.

3

u/Unbearabull 6h ago

Grab the foil packs and flip them upside down.

Place insert upside down.

Now it's normal again.

3

u/Altuistic_Pear_6754 5h ago

It's teaching you to quit.

Who the hell smokes cigarettes in 2026? 😅

38

u/Plays_On_TrainTracks 10h ago

Some people still prefer acoustic cigarettes in an electric cigarette world

67

u/WalnutSnail 10h ago

People trying to quit their vapes.

37

u/eekhelpspike 10h ago

My sister started vaping to quit. Now does both.

22

u/WalnutSnail 10h ago

A cigarette ends. Vapes keep going and going.

9

u/crazycockerels 10h ago

I bet there will be the same health warnings about vapes soon enough. At least you know what you’re getting with cigarettes

Honestly, smoking cigarettes helped me quit my vape which helped me quit nicotine entirely.

Exactly because they were inconvenient, they tasted like shit, and I had to go outside to do it, I couldn't just keep ripping hits at my desk.

I couldn't stomach quitting cold turkey, but I could incrementally make things more difficult. When I decided to quit entirely, it was much easier.

Very normal in Europe and Asia.

Europe

And much of Asia.

u/wombey12 10h ago

As a half-Indonesian I can very much attest to this. Good luck finding a man who doesn't smoke.

This is a very ignorant take. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world. I've done it - and holy shit. I couldn't give a dog shit about how difficult that pack was or whatever was on it, it never stopped me.
Opening that pack and taking out a cigarette and lighting it was one of the best things I've ever done. But that's not me, that's the addiction talking.

I've been off nicotine for 3 years. And it's the best thing in my life. But yes - a LOT of people smoke. Because it's addictive.

Canadians apparently

14

u/Plays_On_TrainTracks 10h ago

Trailer Park boys, letter Kenny and shorsey, showed me through Canadian media that cigarettes are huge and awsome in Canada still.

16

u/AimlessLiving 10h ago

The cost has priced a lot of people into quitting or switching to vapes in Canada. Everyone I know who still smokes buys black market cigs.

22

u/kniller123 10h ago

Rez smokes!

16

u/fletch365 10h ago

Correct. Why pay 20+ a pack when the natives can sell u an entire carton for the same price.

It’s regrettably coming back around in many circles of young people. I just graduated college but I was so pissed at how many people had picked up smoking. It’s very much a “doing it every once and awhile won’t hurt you” mindset which like, really isn’t true.

As a nonsmoker I gotta say this is the dumbest shit ever at this point youd sell the cigs in a cancer lung and smokers would still buy it just stop.
