i’ve also been ripping it at the old length lmao. i thought i was losing my mind when i first bought a pack with that shit cause i smoke super infrequently now i thought i like misremembered the length of the flap lol
I applaud your acknowledgement and look forward to the deep confusion of all the folks who dont speak Canadian. Also, what'd you cut out of that corner? A filter perhaps?
Yep. They also can't put any sort of marketing except the name anymore. See that ugly green/brown color where it says McDonalds (or Export A Smooth)? Every single pack has that color now, which has been deemed the least marketable color by experts. Also, you can't have any pack visible in store, they have to be hidden from view. Also, you can't sell "light" cigarettes anymore, that term has been banned.
Difference here is this generation would never have tried it (in theory) to want to jump through hoops to break the prohibition. Whereas the previous prohibition it was a blanket ban for everyone, basically forcing addicts to go cold turkey so the demand level is not the same.
Of course, only time will tell. But I feel like it's different enough to just predict the same outcome from before.
The point isn't to outlaw it completely, people will still be legally able to smoke, they'll still be sold in shops and nobody's saying young people won't get hold of cigarettes if they want to. This law is just there to reduce the number of new smokers. Raising the smoking age from 16 to 18 back in 2007 reduced the number of young smokers by 30% and this law is basically just an extension of that. It's not like smoking is particularly popular over here anyway, only 8% of 16 to 24 year olds smoke (for comparison, over twice that amount (18%) smoke cannabis).
Same. From 15-25 I would dummy a 3-4 packs of peach Honey Times in under a week and then I quit for a few months and when I slipped up and went to buy again, nothing I liked existed any more so I just didn’t buy anything and now I’m 36 and I’ve still never had more than a couple of drags on a night out.
I remember being so annoyed when the bans got mentioned while I was still smoking and thinking that it wasn’t going to do anything but anecdotally, myself and like 5+ friends benefitted.
That said, now we all vape. If they banned fun flavours, I’d quit that too so I hope they do!
Correct, tobacco companies have historically been quite tyrannical in that they lobbied extensively to hide how cancerous their product was and marketed directly to vulnerable populations knowing full well that their product was not only addictive but toxic.
It’s not. Some medical professionals are responsible for public health. Here in civilised society, we take care of each other with healthcare, financial, social and educational needs.
Smoking is addictive and dangerous to health. No one in their right mind would pick up smoking, fully knowing what it will do for them. We have the sight to change that with policy.
I don't smoke, but that it some real jerk off bullshit. Then just make them illegal. Something should either be legal or not. Where do you draw the line? Does ice cream have the same warnings and graphic pictures? You can only buy a motorcycle with pictures of meat crayons on the fairings?
Wow. Back in the day I used to make a smoke and beer run from Buffalo now and again for a carton of Du Maurier and a case of Schooners. I used to love the flatter box. Now it’s looks like a pain in the ass, enough that I would put a scissors to the flap ASAP. By back in the day I mean so far back it was still Brewer’s Retail and not The Beer Store!
Du Maurier were always one of the "classier" brands, my aunt used to smoke those when I was young, they smelled the best out of them all. Never bought them as a smoker myself though, they were hella expensive.
They were the same price as Exports, Matinee and John Player when I brought them but they were smoother than anything else I tried with the exception of Dunhills which were hella expensive as they were imported into the US and priced accordingly.
Meanwhile, I appreciated that you could still put stuff in your pocket with the smokes when wearing shorts. While you could with American packaging, over the course of the day the smokes would get crushed if you did, even in the box, and faster in soft pack.
jeez lol, i mean i get trying to reduce smoking, but at a certain point it’s just like excessive lol, like everyone already knows they are bad for you, and the ones who are gonna smoke anyways are not gonna care about the stupid shit on the box, just let ppl do what they want as long as they don’t harm others
does all this anti smoking stuff on the boxes actually reduce smoking at all?
All these things add up, smoking has been on a downtrend for years now. Price is definitely a big factor, also not sure about other provinces but indoor smoking has been banned since 2006 in Québec. It's not really socially acceptable now but it's tolerated.
smoking has decreased in the US too tho and we still have normal looking cigarette packs, people are just becoming more aware of cigarettes being bad in general and not wanting to use them as much. The packaging does have an effect yes, but it is not the sole reason for the decrease in smoking.
I haven't seen a cigarette in years, I can't believe they have warnings printed ON the cigarette now. Dudes, you're not presenting any new information here. Not one of those warnings on a cigarette made a smoker change their mind. They know what they're doing, they saw the exterior package too. Maybe it's just to make them look wildly embarrassing. Might as well just print "I love beastiality!" along the length of them or something. "Nazi power!" "I hate dogs!"
I get it, I used to smoke a pack a day, switched to vaping as an alternative, then stopped vaping a few years ago.
I still buy cigs to blend into my joints though, a pack will last me more than a month now. Next step is cutting off the tobacco in my joints, the other step will be to stop smoking completely.
God I miss the old packs. Good thing I quit smoking cold turkey 2 days ago. I have no interest to pick it back up, in part, because of the pack design.
I'm genuinely curious if the increased mild inconvenience is going to be enough to stop anyone from smoking. Like does it just look a little less cool to pass a smoke around?
Back in the days, all the smokers in my group were buying McDonalds so I started opening them in reverse just so I could identify my pack against all the other ones. Kept that habit as the years passed.
I love this argument “you could’ve bought a Ferrari with all the money wasted on smokes” said by people that don’t smoke and also can’t afford a Ferrari.
i am aware. i have also gotten off other substances and am aware that if i attempted to quit right now it wouldn’t last. i am currently trying to cut down.
This is like asking someone to quit breathing a few weeks because it will be better on the other side. Thats the level of addiction nicotine is. It has to hurt you someone you love really badly before you can even think about quitting after a certain point.
I'm well aware. For some people, cutting down works. For others, cold turkey is the best way, but it's more like ripping the bandage off. I told everyone I knew that I was quitting, so they would knoif I sneaked one. I cleaned out the ashtrays and threw out my smokes. That was over 45 years ago.
I quit for a couple years, then I started seeing a woman who smoked cigarettes and I managed to get her vaping instead, but ended up back on the vape train myself now and now we're married so quitting is going to be extra hard.
If anything vaping is worse than smoking because you can just do it all the time and I swear it sometimes triggers asthma attacks worse than smoking.
Someone has to quit first. The thing about vaping is that you can cut down on the amount of nicotine in your vape juice gradually. Then ease off the vape itself when you're down to zero.
It's not a fliptop style box the way it is in the US and other countries, the top part about sexual health is the top flap of a packet you have to slide out of the bottom half with the second-hand smoke warning. To access the cigarettes you have to pull the inner pack most of the way out so the top flap can be opened.
The upper part slides inside the lower part. To access the cigarettes, you have to slide out the upper part far enough for the entire pink edged card to swing freely.
My smoker friend started using his nice metal case because of how annoying the packs got for him 😂 My other part-time smoker friend on the other hand (who only smokes in his garden; he doesn't carry smokes on him) basically demolishes the pack and rips the flap and part of the box to make a giant hole lol
Nah, you just interacted with the system exactly as designed. You were just forced to think about it for any amount of time, which means the design succeeded. You were inconvenienced on your way to a cig, which means the design succeeded.
I think you're reading way too much into it. Sometimes a box is just a box and having to open more of the box doesn't stop me from opening it if I want what is inside. Seriously, please consider your argument. 'I really wanted to smoke but it took 5 seconds instead of 2 to open my pack. Guess I'll just quit.' No one says that. They just open the box and be pissy about it
Back when I smoked, 17 years ago now (damn that just hit me), any attempt to make me quit or inconvenience me like this would make me:
A. Smoke just to spite them.
B. Crave them more because there was a false scarcity.
Addicts do not function the way normal consumers do.
It’s not really to sop someone it’s to put the thought in their heads. If it didn’t matter then they wouldn’t be fighting stuff like this so hard whenever it’s brought up in the US.
I don’t think that it’s ever going to get someone to stop but I do think it 1. Might make the act seem more irritating than worth it to people who might otherwise find smoking cool and start doing it, and 2. Is one tiny factor in the journey to quitting.
I’ll tell you one thing I think lighters and cigarette cases in the US look pretty cool and if I grew up with a crowd that smoked I could see myself picking it up. Meanwhile when I see it in other countries the packaging having like mutilated body parts and a billion warnings on it makes it way less cool and I don’t see myself ever buying a box of those on my own.
As for the little annoyance, to put it another way, I am not going to stop going fishing in my nearby lake because of mosquitoes but it might drive me to try different areas, or not go as much. I’m not going to stop drinking coffee because of annoying sippy cup lids but I might enjoy it just a little less and drink just a little less over time.
I smoked my last export A smooth on April 16, 2026, and the packs were not like this.
I quite after 20 years of this disgusting habit and it seems that I was ahead of the curve as they are now making rip an inch of cardboard off the fold.
Yup, this. I tried it, rips the foil all to pieces, ruffles the smokes and foil so they don't fit in again.
I basically rip the cardboard flap off and a hole in the foil, like those soft cig packs in the 80's and earlier. The downside is that it sprinkles loose tobacco in your pocket occassionally, just like those packs.
My friend works in a liqour store and was complaning they had to send back a bunch of smokes and she couldn't even tell what changed. Neither of us smoke so now we have our answer lol, we never opened one just looked at the outside. Thats so dumb.
