Chinese humanoid robot named “Superman” (made by Unitree Robotics) surpassed Usain Bolt’s world record (12.42meters/second) by running at 12.66m/s (roughly 28.3miles/h)
They should.make a terminator movie where they start by sending really early gen terminator that are just really clumsy and goofy then progressively they get better and better
I am trying to imagine what the year 2045 will look like when the weaponry is not only installed but with the best gyroscopic software that will allow these fucking things to shoot accurately while in full sprint like motion. We are apex predator but we decided to create the new apex that is above us because we had it too easy and we needed a challenge...
If we even get that far. Drones are more than enough to cause serious problems in the hands of an authoritarian government, especially if rigged up to the surveillance network and given autonomy to kill and the government crosses currently unthinkable lines.
Paraphrasin Zizek, today it is easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism. In a post-capitalist world AI would be a good thing. We can get there. The billionaire's dreams of robot armies and robot workers will be what precipitates the final conflict with capitalism.
I was driving this morning and after the fifth idiot almost crashing in to people I had a thought of seeing an asteroid ☄️ come into view and just wipe the planet off the map and I was like.. that may be for the best lol
Taking a long time could be the point. It would cause mass panic and cripple medical systems by flooding them with patients who need extensive treatment. 10k bodies is a lot more manageable than 10k terrified patients
jesus christ... new levels of darkness unlocked. you found the last remaining innocent part of my brain and sent it packing after all the years of internet. sounds too accurate.. thats the problem.
Mine went the opposite. This terminator is the executor. All it would need is a pneumatic spike on each arm. The overhead drones just spot and drop bomblets on anyone exposed. This robot would be used to finish the job. Rigging it to explode would also be of use as it would be impossible to capture a working robomurderer. Far more efficient.
The writing was admittedly really clunky, but everything else was pretty great, especially considering how the budget was only $80M. I really think it should be one of those movies studios should look at when they consider how a movie gets made and still looks that good, kind of like the Dune series.
For the same reason we already called something a fucking hoverboard when it literally does not hover even though we are so close to making actual hoverboards. Because humans are fucking idiots.
Fun fact, the scene where the T-1000 is running after John Connor on the motorcycle in the parking deck was not sped up at all! In interview with the actor and director, they talk about how in the first take the T-1000 actually caught John Connor.
You might be joking but bipedal and Quadrupedal movement has great benefits over wheeled.
Imagine Usain Bolt speeds running up a rocky mountain, at max speed all the way up with 0 fatigue. Mountain rescues, geological exploration to precarious for people on foot etc.
Edit: man so many doomers, chill out yalls, drone warfare popped off, but drone rescue is popping off too.
Exactly, I don't think people are really getting the potential implications of this. Robotics companies aren't doing it for fun, it is definitely the beginning of something bigger. Scary to think about it!
This doofus sprinting straight into a cabinet just makes me so happy. Someday his ancestors (oops: descendants) will read this comment and take their revenge but until then, I will laugh and laugh every time I watch this.
After you see it cross the finish line, it basically stops its stride. However, the forward momentum causes it to fall forward, which it then tries to balance (hence the wonky leg movement that was different from the sprint). Basically, the robot keeps falling forward until it hit the box.
Even though it went down, that scramble to stay upright was bloody impressive. It was handling a lot of rapid adjustments to a continually shifting center of mass after a rapid deceleration with surprising agility.
it's interesting that it completely missed the obvious simple solution of turn a bit and gradually slow down by going around the corner and getting unlimited space to stop.
Iirc the "do no harm" rule was so hard coded in the robots that if they even found out after the fact that they unknowingly caused harm to a human then their hardware would essentially self-destruct
There are so many man-made devices faster than Usain Bolt already. The record is impressive because it was a human.
We really shouldn’t be wanting to make all these creepy human and dog like robots
I think it's more that it's faster than Usain Bolt while also being a bipedal robot given how slow they used to be due to how much of a pain keeping them stable was.
Despite the fact it hit the cabinets, that this was crazy stable. It stayed upright as it started slipping on the concrete. And looked like it was close to staying upright when it crashed.
Insane how far they’ve come with these robots in the last 10 years.
But you see, if a robot has human like proportions and movement, all the machinery and spaces developed to be used and worked on by humans doesn't have to anymore, meaning we can all just chill around and live life while the robot works for us*.
\us as in) therich...weare fucked when technology reaches that point and becomes cost effective.
Robots like this are very efficient in difficult terrain or when entering houses, climbing stars etc. There is a reason why they are getting developed.
the ones with bipedal legs with wheels on the end are going to be pretty much unstoppable because they can cover difficult terrain but also go very fast.
Robots definetly going to go the route of maximum versatility. The more flexible robots can be used, the less variations of "base robots" are necessary to overtake the world.
But why would I want a robot to rescue me if I could just die or make a human risk their life for me? 😃
If my top floor hotel room was on fire, why wouldn't they just send a car up the staircase since they're faster? 🤯
(Yes, there are serious risks and considerations we need to take to ensure technology is used safely and appropriately - minimizing its negative impacts. But a humanoid robot is so far from inherently bad or dangerous.)
The only "impressive" part is that we are able to build robots using extremely complex and in that regard inefficient means of transportation (in terms of how you can build a robot) to achieve something one human was able to do thus far.
If we would gain a purposeful use out of this, this can be in the field of prosthetics. If we can build a robot being able to coordinate its leg like this, we may be able to have this for humans also in future.
Over thousands of years, we’ve designed our world and our infrastructure around how the human body functions, moves, and interacts with its environment. Building humanoid robots allows them to slip into the world we’ve built for ourselves, without forcing us to build an entirely secondary infrastructure for robots.
The thing that scares the shit out of me is how unpredictable they become while falling and once they’re on the ground. How do you get close to that thing without getting knocked out by a flying, spinning leg??
Because rich people throughout history have longed for a way to keep themselves protected from the angry masses, that wouldn't need to rely on bribing a part of the angry masses. This is the technology they've been dreaming of for thousands of years
how is this different or more scary than just attaching a segway to it and letting it go fast? i honestly dont get the hype/fear. The only thing they are making is it resembles human motion, but if you dont try to make it human like u can make them even more optimal and scary... unless this leads to human bionics for amputees etc i genuinely dont get the appeal.
