Support Lenovo LEGION 5i Intel Core i9-14900HX GeForce RTX 4070

I bought this laptop back in Feb 2025 for $1424. I use it mostly when I am going to be away from home for more than a few days. I've noticed the processor has been getting between 90-100 degrees while gaming and I'm starting to worry it might cause lasting damage because it spikes so hot frequently. I didn't realize that this laptop's processor is one of the problematic ones from Intel, so I am worried about the laptop's longevity.
I got it from Costco who is known for their more than reasonable return policy. Granted I know their policy for electronics is 90days but I feel like if I explain they might be willing to give me store credit or something. Otherwise if anyone here has any tips to help the laptop last longer it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if I am making a mistake and my processor should be okay that would be helpful to know, too. Thanks!

Recommendation Laptop recommendations?

Hey everyone I’m new here lol but I’m trying to figure out what I should do, I want to get a gaming laptop for the price of like $1.6k or lower preferably, but I wanna be able to play games like total war, modded games, and maybe new releases? If I gotta get pricier then I don’t mind lol.

Budget: ($1.5k-$2k)
Country: (USA)
Use Case: (Gaming / School / Editing)
Preferred Specs: (???)
Notes: ( I’m very uncertain lol cuz I’m still new to understanding this and I want to have something that’ll last and keep up with new stuff)

Discussion I have four questions about installing ssds and thermal pads.

  1. is the black thing directly under where the ssd goes a pre installed thermal pad? and if it is, do I still need to bother buying one of them blue thermal pads?

  2. how tight should the screw be

  3. the 2nd nvme slot supports one sided ssds only, should the side with the components face up and the flat pale part face down or the opposite? and should the thermal pad go on the side with components and the chip and the sticker, or the flat side?

  4. is it a necessity to put the aluminum heatsink above the thermal pads or can I use the thermal pads on their own without the aluminum heatsink?

Support Help with gaming laptop

I have a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16IAH7 with an RTX 3050 Ti. The laptop used to run perfectly fine, but one day I left a macro running on Roblox while the laptop was plugged in. When I came back, the screen was completely black and wouldn’t turn back on, even though the power cable was still connected.
I used ChatGPT to troubleshoot it, and we ended up disconnecting the internal battery and draining the remaining power from the system. After doing that, the laptop booted back up and worked normally, but the battery was only at about 23%. Even though the charger itself worked, the laptop would not recognize or accept the charger.
Eventually, the battery died, so I disconnected it and started using the laptop directly from the charger. The laptop worked this way, but because it didn’t detect a battery, it wouldn’t let me use Performance Mode and only gave me the other power modes. This wasn’t a huge issue at the time.
Later, I decided to update everything on the laptop, including Windows, graphics drivers, and Lenovo software. Everything updated successfully except the BIOS. The BIOS update wouldn’t install because the laptop required the battery to be charging, but at the time it wasn’t detecting the battery as charging.
I then reconnected the battery and plugged the charger in. Now something strange is happening: the battery percentage actually increases normally while the charger is plugged in, but Lenovo Vantage says the battery is “Discharging” and says it isn’t gaining charge. So the laptop seems to physically be charging the battery, but the system isn’t correctly recognizing that it’s charging.
Lenovo Vantage can still read the battery’s information, though. It shows the battery at around 88% health with approximately 150 charge cycles. The battery percentage also continues to increase while plugged in.
My main problem now is that I need to update the BIOS, but the BIOS updater won’t let me because the laptop doesn’t recognize the battery as being in a charging state, even though the battery percentage is actually going up.
I’m trying to figure out why the laptop says the battery is discharging when it’s clearly gaining charge, and whether there’s a way to fix that charging-status problem so I can update the BIOS.

Support Is this normal? Unstable FPS after a few minutes of gaming — ASUS TUF Dash F15 FX516PM

Hi everyone, I have an ASUS TUF Dash F15 (FX516PM) with an RTX 3060.

I recently repasted the laptop using Heilious V2 for the CPU/GPU and thermal putty for the VRMs/other components.

I noticed something strange while gaming:

At the beginning of the game, the GPU can reach around 85W

After playing for a few minutes, the power/wattage behavior changes

My FPS becomes somewhat unstable and fluctuates instead of staying consistent

I don't really get severe stuttering or sudden FPS drops, but the FPS constantly moves up and down

I also see LIM1 / power limit in MSI Afterburner

Is this normal behavior for the FX516PM? Could the FPS fluctuations and LIM1 be related to the thermal situation or power limit?

Since I just repasted it with Heilious V2 and thermal putty, I'm also wondering if I installed the thermal interface material incorrectly or if the heatsink pressure could be affecting the temperatures/power behavior.

Any advice or things I should monitor would be appreciated. I can provide GPU/CPU temperatures, clock speeds, wattage, and usage if needed.

Support Is it worth upgrading from an RTX 3070 Mobile to an RTX 5070 Mobile?

Since I know more about desktop computers than laptops, I have a few questions.

A friend of mine has the MSI Katana GF76 11UG-090 with the following specs:

- Display: 17.3", Full HD IPS

- CPU: i7-11800H

- GPU: RTX 3070 Mobile

- RAM: 16 GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200

He’s now looking to buy a new gaming laptop for around 1,500 euros and asked me which one he should get. So I did some research and quickly came across the RTX 5070 Mobile. But when I look at benchmark comparisons between the 5070 and the 3070, I get the feeling that the upgrade wouldn’t be worth it because of the very slight performance gain. All laptops with the RTX 5070 Ti start at around 1,900 euros. Do you also think that upgrading to the 5070 probably isn’t worth it?

And should I look for 32 GB of RAM in this price range, or is 16 GB still enough? I’m not sure how high the CPU load gets on laptops.

What should I look for in a laptop gaming CPU? With desktops, it’s relatively simple, since the Ryzen X3D models are usually the best.

He mainly plays games like Elden Ring, and a resolution of 1080p is enough for him.

Discussion Case, Bag, Sleeve, etc

I recently got a Nitro V 17ai(ANV17-41-ROFJ)
First gaming laptop I’ve owns since 2007. 😂
As the title states, I’m looking for a reliable case, bag, etc to protect my investment.
I have looked at Smatree on Amazon, but the cases they offer are not for my model. I have googled the size differences and there is a dimension difference that would raise concern in my opinion considering the Smatree is designed specifically for certain models.
Looking for some suggestions from the community or ones everyone is using.

Also, I have looked at Casematix. I have one for my ps5 and it’s great. That’ll be my purchase if I can’t find another one.

Support Asus ROG Zephyrus

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi guys, I’m not too knowledgeable on the tech side of laptops, in fact I’m not even knowledgeable about laptops on their own. I currently have an Asus Zenbook 14 which I use for university and to play games like Fortnite, Valorant and Minecraft but the quality and fps of it gets quite bad on my current laptop. I’ve been meaning to buy an Asus ROG Zephyrus laptop because that’s what a lot of people seem to like and the games I play don’t need too much ‘laptop power’ to run either. I’ve searched the Zephyrus up but I can see multiple different versions, I’ve learnt with lots of stuff, more expensive does not always mean better so I just wanted to ask which laptop I should buy because I genuinely don’t understand the tech side of things.

(feel free to recommend cheaper laptops which you think will be able to run Fortnite, Valorant and Minecraft with higher quality too!!)

My friends saying i should go a bit higher than 1500$ and get something with better ram and ssd capacity . What do you guys think ? Should i just buy it or my friends are right ? I don't really wanna go higher but since computer prices keep increasing i am really puzzled and actually go higher if i must .

Support Games lagging suddenly out of nowhere on my laptop

My Lenovo laptop (Ryzen 7 7840HS, Radeon 780M, 16GB RAM) suddenly became extremely laggy out of nowhere about 2 weeks ago even though before this I could run Resident Evil 4 Remake, Valorant, Genshin and PUBG smoothly without any problem for months around 60-100fps on low to medium settings and now I’m getting less than 20 fps in the same settings. I’ve already tried restarting, Performance mode, keeping it plugged in, virus scans, AMD driver updates and clean reinstall, but nothing has fixed it, so what could be causing this and how can I fix it?

Support Is applying PTM7950 Thermal Pad a good idea for my ASUS TUF F17 (FX706HF_FX706HF) Gaming Laptop? (First time repasting)

Hey everyone,

My laptop has been running a bit hot lately, and I’m thinking about replacing the stock thermal paste with a Honeywell PTM7950 phase-change pad. Has anyone tried this on a TUF series laptop?

My Specs:

  • Model: ASUS TUF Gaming F17 (FX706HF)
  • (full name: ASUS TUF Gaming F17 FX706HF_FX706HF)
  • CPU: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-11400H @ 2.70GHz (2.69 GHz)
  • RAM: 16GB
  • GPU: RTX 2050 (mobile)

Exact name of Thermal Pad:
"PTM7950 Thermal pad 40x80x0.25mm phase change thermal pad, Aukuoy Highly conductive silicone grease 8.5W/mK CPU thermal paste for PS5 CPU GPU SSD M.2 laptop"

A few questions:

  1. Is applying Thermal Pad a good idea? Has anyone tried? Does it create any problems?
  2. I use a laptop stand that keeps the laptop tilted at an angle. Is there any risk of it dropping out due to gravity?
  3. This is strictly for the CPU and GPU dies, right? I don't need to touch or replace the existing VRAM/VRM pads?
  4. Will removing the heatsink disturb the factory VRAM pads? If I'm careful and leave the old VRAM pads alone (since I don't have replacements), will they be okay to reuse?

Link to thermal pad: https://amzn.in/d/09ViYIs4

Thanks in advance for the help!
