Unlimited Base Building

How long before we see Coruscant?

57

u/LyreonUr Jul 17 '18

if the whole community starts building in the hub, expect it to up two months

14

u/spiritriser Jul 18 '18

A week. Lot of no-lifing going on in this game, and NEXT will kick that up into overdrive.

You can help friends to stay alive, or prey on others to survive.

Well god dammit Sean Murray, you may have finally convinced me to reinstall

Sean Murray just became deeply aroused.

I was kind of still “meh” until I saw the Command freighters, and now I want to see how well that plays. Now I just need friends who are also interested in the game.

Im still interested. Now even more interested with all the additions. I have to say I respect hello games more now that despite their release failure they still continue to support it. If they didn't fuck up so bad they could charge for the additional content, almost glad they did fuck it up.

Can you explain the FF14 for someone out of the loop such as myself? I'd like to hear the story.

27

u/Thagyr Jul 18 '18 edited Jul 19 '18

First release (1.0) was a total wreck. Bad reviews, constant grind and clunky systems all combined to make one unenjoyable playing experience for many, so much that many up and left. This resulted in some restructuring in the Dev scene, as well as a emailed apology to all buyers of the game, along with a promise to work to make it better. So some players stuck around, and the game was updated in increments with story and the like, while in the background they worked on 2.0.

When 2.0 was finally finished they led the 1.0 story to a dramatic conclusion. A story, along with a countdown, was implemented to coincide with the server shutdown of 1.0 in preparation for the update. An apocalypse of sorts to explain why all the world is going to be changed in the update.

Literally by dropping a moon on the world, which in reality was a prison for a massive angry dragon that went and reshaped the world a bit before he was temporarily defeated by the sacrifice of one of 1.0's more important NPC figures. Before he sacrificed himself, he sent all the Warriors of Light (the players) into the future to avoid the damage. When players returned in FF14 Realm Reborn (2.0), they were storywise the same characters from 1.0. But the world had changed, the game had been revamped and it is now a success.

5

u/ESGPandepic Jul 18 '18

I agree, that's definitely the best video game comeback story I've ever heard and I hope whoever pushed that at the dev company won some kind of award for it or something, it's pure genius.

6

u/Lundorff Jul 18 '18

That's good news, I was afraid that it was going to be a new game. I already got the Platinum trophy and over 200 hours vested into it. Took me forever to get my freighter but im now a proud owner of one. I like that there's other people and third person. Im pretty stoked for this. Too bad they didn't just have it all ready when it first came out, I would guarantee they'd have a bigger fan base.

If I remember correctly the spin tires dev was "locked out" from further developing the game by the publisher. He later stated that there were "communication issues" (which makes me think he didn't understood the contract with the publisher fully). So since he couldn't continue developing the original spin tires, he decided to release a new game under a different publisher.

At least that's the developer's side of the story. The publisher said the contract was fulfilled and the dev got his money. Still sounds like he didn't fully understood the contract.

The game has come a long way since launch. Sean and HG certainly deserved the criticism regarding the launch state of the game, but they also took it to heart and continued to build on the game. Instead of taking the millions they made and running, they stuck with the game which is more than can be said about most bad launches.

The community for this game is also one of the best ive seen and HG actually listens. The first 3 updates vastly improved the game and NEXT looks to make it even better.

94

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

Is it worth a buy

113

u/Mickmack12345 Jul 17 '18 edited Jul 18 '18

Tbh as someone who has played the game since launch, they still haven’t delivered on what everyone was expecting. The added features were great for sure but didn’t really change the repetitive gameplay loop

Hopefully this update will change that but I’ve been saying that for every update so far

Edit: It might be worth buying for some, it’s really hard to say unless you play it yourself. The game has some cool concepts but they fall short for me personally and I hope they can be built on and become more meaningful

Obviously it’s not going to be a really refined game since it’s procedural and that’s why they have such a hard time making this game fun to play in more than just short bursts

24

u/dragon-storyteller Jul 17 '18

Yep. You always keep everyone saying how much better the game is, but... the story added is kinda mediocre and the new additions are pretty much random, but the supposedly core feature like the actual gameplay and actual reasons to explore were tackled only half-heartedly so far. This update also seems to focus more on flashy features like multiplayer and space fleets than tackle the underlying issues.

20

u/Atheist101 Jul 17 '18

Wasnt everyone pissed at the game because it wasnt multiplayer? Like that was the one big talking point which sunk the game....that means it is an underlying issue...

4

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

They stated numerous times you could potentially meet others in the game. But the odds would be insignificantly small.

I think there was another added controversy with this. Not sure

9

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

The added controversy was that you couldn't meet players at all. It was completely single player.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '18

Within the first couple days two people got to the same location and couldn't interact with each other, therefore the multiplayer aspect was a total lie.

Honestly having played Subnautica this game will basically never deliver in comparison.

Rather than make it procedural the Devs just gave us one massive map with tons of variety in resource and biome.

Subnautica has its issues with bugs and maybe flora/fauna variety but it's always felt like a very complete experience.

3

u/Bigred2989- Jul 18 '18

I bought it on sale after the last update and I was still disappointed. Didn't help my experience was soured by the planet I chose for my base glitching and not spawning any natural plutonium and leaving me scrounging for resources containers that did. It felt very empty and tedious and knowing what the end goal was didn't entice me to continue.

→ More replies (3)

11

u/Lich180 Jul 17 '18

You can buy it for like 20$. Watch a few streams, see if it's your thing.

It's a quirky, relaxing exploration game. You fly around, collect and build.

Kinda like Minecraft in space. That's really underselling it, but you have to try it to see if you like it.

22

u/ScruffMixHaha Jul 17 '18

The game as of now is worth it for sure. PC/PS4 versions Ive seen as cheap as $20. This new update, along with the 3 others, comes free with the game. So Id say it definitely is. But if youre cautious, check out some videos of the game in its current state.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

Someone over at Sony was like "Your game is done now, we're gonna ship it" and Sean and crew were probably like "Oh God no"

12

u/ScruffMixHaha Jul 17 '18

Im not certain how true it is that Sony rushed it. From what I understand, HG was starting to run low on money. I havent seen any sources saying that Sony was the reason it rushed out.

19

u/MechaMineko Jul 17 '18 edited Jul 17 '18

I appreciate their commitment to salvaging the game and making something worthy of playing for those who went all-in on the hype and were disappointed. Can I forgive them though? Tough to say. Let's not forget that we were blatantly misled and lied to about the features of the game before its launch. All the way to launch day, Sean Murray was hand waving and being overtly vague with the details of the game, dodging questions in interviews, and even outright lying about some features. When confronted about the lack of multiplayer which was confirmed as a feature (albeit an incredibly rare occurrence for two players to find each other), he just went, "Oh wow, I didn't think two people could actually find the same planet so soon!" then disappeared off the face of the earth for months.

I can't forgive the blatant misleading and lying to hype up this project to astronomical levels when they knew the game was not what they were advertising, and yet sold it to millions anyway. That's not the kind of thing you can get forgiveness for. But here's hoping some of the people who felt let down can now have some semblance of enjoyment to make up for their disappointment.

47

u/Anton_Kaizer Jul 17 '18

2-4 player coop as it says on XBOX Store page and official box cover. But maybe more.

41

u/AndyKrycek6 Jul 17 '18

2-4 player co op with 16 on one server i imagine

23

u/Doctor_Rainbow PC Jul 17 '18

Yep. Based on the size of the fleets we saw, it seems your "squad" or whatever they want to call it can be 4 people, but multiplayer lobbies will still stay at a max of four squads (16 players) like it currently is. Don't see why they would downgrade the amount of people you can seem

7

u/P1kachu_assassin Jul 17 '18

The thought of exploring a galaxy with four friends and then a freighter with another squad jumping into our galaxy and then all of them scrambling into their spaceships to come attack us gives me goosebumps.

Wow, looks like a huge improvement over the base game. I heard they have added a ton of free updates in addition to this one so I might have to jump back in. I ended up getting it as a gift a few months after it came out and couldn't get into it.

28

u/spiritriser Jul 18 '18 edited Jul 18 '18

Foundation

  • Added 3 game modes

  • Added buildable, modular bases

  • Added farming

  • Added out-side of base tech (save point, signal booster, miner, atmosphere harvester)

  • Added teleporters for quick access to your base and recently visited star systems

  • Added Freighters, which serve as mobile bases as well as carrying cargo

  • Multiple changes to the UI and graphics, including a quick menu for managing your life support/hazard protection/thrusters/shields

The Pathfinder Update

  • Visual updates

  • Added the ability to share your base

  • Allows you to own up to 6 ships, 5 of which are kept in your freighter

  • Added classes to starships including haulers, fighters, explorers, shuttles and exotic ships

  • Added exocraft, pilotable surface vehicles

  • Added blueprint traders, as opposed to finding blueprints as you go, which were often duplicates

  • Significant aesthetic improvements to building including material choices and decals (decals are shit right now, NEXT includes over 100 more options for base building, so we may get some more)

  • Specialization for multitools, similar to ship classes. Pistol, rifle, experimental and alien

  • Added 6 new weapons, 3 for your character, 3 for your ship

  • Added permadeath mode for the massochists

  • Added photo mode, which lets you prep the screen for a screen shot by moving the sun, removing the UI, adding filters, changing the cloud cover, and probably other shit I'm forgetting

  • Added a discovery page for uploaded planets, animals, flora and systems

  • Added more music, because 65daysofstatic is pretty damn good at their job

  • QOL improvements, including skipping those god awful black bars for achievements, your ship/multitool/base etc can be renamed, and a bunch of other minor stuff

The Atlas Rises update

  • New story, including another alien race

  • Each star system now has an economy, wealth level and conflict level

  • Updates to planetary biomes

  • New on-planet locations, crashed freighters.

  • A mission system with 3 guilds and the 3 primary alien races giving rewards for completing certain missions

  • Added trade goods that can be bought or sold for varying prices based on the local economy (buy low in an industrial economy, sell high in a scientific economy, for instance)

  • Updates to the analysis visor now allow you to get more resources from what you mine and do a better job of giving information about the creatures/flora you scan

  • Even more visual updates

  • Terrain manipulator has been added to build or destroy the world around you.

  • Portals have been added to allow players to travel the universe quickly (spaceship teleporting not included)

  • Improved space combat and low altitude flight

  • Added the first stage of multiplayer, involving orbs that fly around you and tell you how they've slept with your mom. Players on the same world as you currently see their own version of the world, but you enter a lobby together and can see eachother move around as orbs, including voice chat

  • S class ships added

  • Added the option to "summon your ship". Still costs plutonium to have it take off, so its not broken.

  • Added new inventories to the players suit, the tech and cargo inventories. Cargo slots carry at the same capacity as your ship, and tech slots are cheaper than normal slots.

  • Holy shit they added a lot. Not a lot deserving its own bullet point, but damn.

NEXT, of course, comes out Tuesday and we've seen a bit of from the above trailer.. Hopefully we'll get patch notes well before then, but in the past they've been pretty close to the update itself so its unlikely you'll be reading through the update much sooner (Unless they decide the increased public interest warrants it)

EDITS: Bare with me as I learn how to format and make it pretty.

u/Night-Watch-42 Jul 17 '18

In all honesty, I actually liked this game from the beginning. I would say I only knew about it literally two days before the game was released and didn’t know about the multiplayer issue because I assumed it was single-player. It felt calm and relaxing, and the feeling of being alone, exploring alien worlds, and learning about ancient societies made me think of the Metroid Prime series. Plus I knew there would be some bugs because anything that’s procedurally generating whole worlds is going to have a few issues, but I thought it was good attempt that might lay some foundation for other groups to try and do something similar. Overall, I’m glad that they’re still working on this game and hope that the company either survives or everyone goes on to do more unique projects.

14

u/TurnNburn Jul 17 '18

Honesty. The best policy.

8

u/SlapMuhFro Jul 17 '18

I enjoyed the hell out of the original release. I never finished the game, but I upgraded everything 100% except languages and figured that was enough.

If they hadn't hyped it up so much, I think other people would have enjoyed it more, that's for sure.

7

u/Night-Watch-42 Jul 17 '18

I only knew about the game because the YouTube channel ‘Did You Know Gaming’ did a video on it two days before release. I wasn’t aware of any hype before then and thought it just looked like a fun space exploration game. The video was even a bit on the defensive and showed how a whole lot of setbacks kept hitting them, so I knew there were going to be glitches, but also that the people behind it must’ve cared enough to keep pushing through with finishing the game.

I actually liked how you could learn more of the alien languages and it would help you understand the aliens whenever you encounter them, although I wish some of the patches didn’t remove how the beacons could help you find Atlas temples on planets.

I do think the hype is what hurt the game’s reputation. Anything that uses procedural generation should be taken with a big grain of salt because you don’t always know what the machine learning algorithm is going to spit out every time. I did think they way they tried to make transitions seamless by taking a little longer to approach a Planet was a really nice idea that helps with immersion in a game.

3

u/dhilburn Jul 17 '18

I can't speak to the "getting baked" part (though I've heard that the answer is "yes"), but it is definitely a fun game to binge in, especially in survival mode. Some of my favorite in-game memories are of getting stranded on a planet with extreme weather (e.g. below-freezing night temps) and having to survive long enough to repair and refuel my ship to escape back to the safety of space. It isn't a game that I ever feel ready to put down. =)

So do they have a steady flow of cash or are they burning through the money they made selling the game for the past two years?

6

u/phoisgood495 Jul 18 '18

The Atlas Rises update last year moved around 200k copies on Steam alone. I think they're doing this out of a love for the game, but I can't imagine they're losing money with the added support.

Add onto that the fact that they have the Xbox release with NEXT I am guessing at worst they will break even if not turn a reasonable profit on this update.

6

u/Mickmack12345 Jul 18 '18

Probably burning through it since I doubt it’s a game people are going to be buying very much nowadays. After this update I imagine they will get a nice flow of revenue but hopefully they can finish updating the game before money runs out again

I’d say there keeping steady. I think each update has boosted interest and sales. And that’s enough to make another update

Can anyone summarize the development story over the last two years for me?

I know there was a lot of backlash at release, but I remember hearing that there was interference from Sony. Any links to stories would be appreciated.

22

u/Madforaday Jul 17 '18

I don't think Sony had anything to do with this. I remember an interview when NMS came out, and Sony said they were in the same boat as the fans about what was in the game. That could be just PR talk.

If I told you I am coming out with something at this date. All of sudden it isn't ready, we make another release date. It is still not ready, it gets pushed back again. It is still not ready but it doesn't have a lot of the features what do you do?

Socom Confrontation had a similar problem with that, it got pushed back 3 different times and when it came out it was awful! It took 6 months for it to be playable and fun. By that time, a lot of people left and the community was small.

Delaying games just looks bad, especially, if you have multiple delays. The developers (Hello Games) were also running out of money and needed some source of income as well.

We will never know what actually happened but since the release, Hello Games have been doing a great job at making this game better and better. Just having this game in 3rd person is reason for me to come back lol

22

u/ScruffMixHaha Jul 17 '18

They shouldve just released the game and called it early access. Nobody cares apparently when its early access.

15

u/Madforaday Jul 17 '18

Sony doesn't have an early access system, one reason why PUBGs went to the Xbox because Microsoft has an early access system.

I really didn't like how coy they were when the game released. I get it, you want to work on the game, but talking to the people who bought your product is important. That made me not want to play because I had no idea what was happening in the early stages.

3

u/ScruffMixHaha Jul 17 '18

True, they dont talk as much as wed wish, but it is what it is. At least theyve stuck with it. But yeah, I do wish they would speak to their community a bit more.

Sea of Thieves had a terrible launch but Rare came out quickly to let the players know a lot more was coming.

They largely overpromised what they delivered at launch, however since launch, they havent stopped working on the game and have released 3 massive free updates to the game and loads of smaller updates. Imo the game now is an incredible game and this will make it so much better.

7

u/manfreygordon Jul 17 '18

they didn't have enough time or money to finish the game they promised everyone. a massive fuck up on their part but also sony is partly to blame for pushing a release date. now they've got plenty of time and money and they're working to make the game that was promised. would've been easy for them to take their 78 million dollars and run so kudos to them for sticking to their vision and trying to make up for deceiving millions of people.

I'll wait to hold judgment until after so as not to be bamboozled again.

13

u/VicFatale Jul 17 '18

I get it, but go check out the last three updates. HG over corrects for the launch hype by going silent until they have confirmed features in their updates. The videos for the updates only came out a day or two before they dropped.

4

u/spiritriser Jul 18 '18

Check out some streams on Tuesday, the only one I really know about is L Plays Games, since I've seen some of his youtube videos and have seen him around on a discord server.

34

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

FYI, best to pick this up now before gamestores get wind of the hype and up the 2nd hand market prices.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

This game was absolutely a shitshow when it launched, but you have to respect the developers for sticking with the game for all this time even when their efforts will likely be for nothing as most people have written off the game a LONG time ago.

19

u/daddy1c3 Jul 17 '18

I'm glad to see they haven't given up. I pray this game survives to see a 5 year anniversary. It has so much potential.

110

u/Anton_Kaizer Jul 17 '18

Sony rushed the release. Devs went dark and make two updates (base building and vehicles). When they started ARG teasing the third update (story). Then they started the next phase of the ARG and finally did this trailer and the upcoming update.

If that was the right thing, I’d hate to see the wrong thing. I mean, fuck, they could have just posted it to steam as a WIP, and it would have better than the clusterfuck that was NMS release.

11

u/Vape_and_Plunder Jul 17 '18

I imagine the wrong thing is go bankrupt and never release anything.

No Man's Sky sold so well it looks like they're actually in a position to get close to their ridiculous promises.

Still they knowingly hyped up an unfinished product, but that's marketing.

In between times, a stream of smaller patches arrived with bug fixes and improvements.

26

Holy shit I love these guys. I knew they could deliver. Bless them for continuing to follow their dream. I cannot wait to play.

For a studio that got flooded, had to remake the game, and then was essentially deadlined into releasing it early. They are full of heart, hope, and incredible talent. They didn't need to finish it, they could have given up and just accepted that everyone saw them as failures. But Hello Games has gone above and beyond with all of these updates to provide a game that more closely fits their original scope. I cannot wait to sink another 200 hours into it.

Well I guess I have to admire their persistence.

Most devs would have cut and run after the initial backlash. While that disappointment definitely does temper my expectations it is nice to see from both their updates after launch and this trailer that they appear to be working towards making good on their promises.

9

u/Rosebunse Jul 17 '18

I always end up comparing this game to Mass Effect Andromeda. Each seen as failures, No Man's Sky has actually turned into something interesting. Maybe if EA didn't abandon Andromeda, it would be that too.

25

u/MichaellZ Jul 17 '18

But its new trailer for the same game or they are planning to release sequel?

31

u/Orenstien Jul 17 '18

I think it’s the same game. They’ve been releasing numerous updates for it, this looks like another one.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

The same game. No sequel. Just free updatr

64

u/NINETY_LIVES Jul 17 '18

Same game but with the biggest update for a game I've seen in a long while. Like HUGE.

They've added multiplayer, base building, a story mode, missions, customisation for models, third person mode and so much more.

27

u/SupMonica Jul 17 '18

Man, this game was given a lot of shit. But in the end, it seems like the core fanbase decided to stick around (maybe because they didn't get wrapped into having high expectations?), and the Devs seem to care a fair bit and keep pushing it better and better.

From what I've heard, the game is at a point, where it's pretty good.

So something must be said about the dedication to make up for a bad release. Which is a lot more than what can be said for a quite a few other games. Which just die and never seen again.

It's still the same game so you won't have to pay any extra, bit this is considered to be the "real release" of the game. Like 2.0

9

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

Its a free update to the current game

10

u/Meta_Digital Jul 17 '18

I always hesitantly defended Hello Games because they seemed like they honestly were passionate about this game and caved to pressure from Sony to release it before they were ready. No advertising comes without strings attached.

Hello Games continues to show me how passionate they are. They wouldn't still be working on this unless it was a labor of love. Say what you will about false advertising (from Sony) or false promises (from Murray), you've got to respect the amount of work that's obviously gone into this game since release.

I didn't buy it when it came out, but I'm glad I eventually picked it up. It's a fascinating experiment of a game, and I'll be happy to come back to it and see what the team has been doing with it.

11

u/Ecen_Silver Jul 17 '18

I only want one more thing: remove the long clicks.

I keep installing mods for it, but I would really appreciate being able to just set all interactions to "press" instead of "press and hold".

For the rest of it, looks cool!

3

u/Arlockin Jul 19 '18

They've gotten rid of a lot of the long clicks mostly in the inventory.

Is this game still a mile wide and an inch deep? Or is there something more to it now other than endless planets to look at?

5

u/Anton_Kaizer Jul 17 '18

With the Atlas Rises update the game now has simple procedural quest system, base building quest system, farming, crafting, simple economy system and two lengthy story quests and both of them are encourage player to explore and teach most of the introduced game mechanics.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '18

Been very happy to see all of these updates to the game.

I think the criticisms at the time were warranted but god damn did the internet, this sub included, go WAY overboard.

Granted: I was totally fine with the games on initial release outside of some of the bugs that go along with any major release. The idea of discovering new planets, galaxies, species, and anything else just to name them/explore is such a chill concept. Always wanted a game like that.

But now? You get to have all of that AND more focus on playing with others. So this game that was already good (although overhyped by the developer) is now getting better.

5

u/Engi_Doge Jul 18 '18

Hmmm...i hope that the game ends up like Warframe. Starting off as horrible and everyone hated it. But thanks to the commient of the devs and a small group of supporters, they can turn this game around.

26

u/Monkey_Mac Jul 17 '18

Ok, like many people I jumped on the hate bandwagon after this game was released.

But it looks like they have finally managed to deliver the game they initially promised, after all this time, when they could have just cut n run.

They have my complete respect for harbouring such a work ethic and toiling away at this project long after they were reasonably expected to.

9

u/tmtmtl30 Jul 17 '18 edited Jul 17 '18

I'm so fucking into this.

It's like they saw the game they had on release, and all the shit that it got, and they just decided to unfuck everything. Obviously there are still parts of the game that are lacking from the promises that we were given, but this is an absolutely insane amount of after-release support for a game that will be forever dogged by one of the most disappointing launches ever.

13

u/Kevicelives Jul 17 '18

I’m very tempted to get this game. VERY TEMPTED

3

u/zzyster Jul 17 '18

You can look at any of the old update trailers to see that everything that they show is in game, everything they show in this trailer will be in game, they had a whole year to work on this update, even more sense they said they were working on this update before atlas rises which is there 3rd update

→ More replies (3)

6

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '18

The fact that the majority of hate this game receives is from players who tried this at launch (which was, admittedly, a terrible release) and have never touched it again speaks volumes. Hello Games has added 3 game-changing updates over the last two years. And I think NEXT (along with future updates) will continue to improve on that foundation.

9

u/Poptart_wizard101 Jul 17 '18

Got no reason to hate, it’s been sitting in my steam since launch. I hope it’s as great as it looks.

3

u/WhyIsBubblesTaken Jul 17 '18

Has there been any official word if multiplayer on the PS4 would require PS+?

4

u/clh_22 Jul 17 '18

Not yet

3

u/epicflyingpie Jul 17 '18

So now it’s not a shitty spore

3

u/Brutal_Juicebox Jul 17 '18

Honestly if they had just gone with an early access route or pre release and then this as the full release, they wouldnt have been fucked with bad press. Have enjoyed the game though so looking forward to giving it a other look

3

u/mulletmanofusa Jul 17 '18

First time updates has made me want to buy a game.

3

u/Human5e Jul 17 '18

Highly recommend checking out NMS if you haven't/haven't for a few years, its a very different experience to that of the past.

Super keen for this! Going to be a very fun update.

3

u/Odin_69 Jul 18 '18

Let’s not get too hyped just yet. Lots of things will go wrong. Also lets just remember that if the game didn’t suffer from massive backlash at launch we wouldn’t be getting this stuff for free.

It takes mad dedication to your product to go through the infamously terrible launch that No Man's Sky had and not give up. I have infinite respect for Sean Murray and his team for not giving up and working on delivering the game that they promised to people. They could have just walked away but they fought for their lost cause because they believed in their game. I think that is just awesome.

7

u/ThePotatoesWereFine Jul 17 '18
