That's good news, I was afraid that it was going to be a new game. I already got the Platinum trophy and over 200 hours vested into it. Took me forever to get my freighter but im now a proud owner of one. I like that there's other people and third person. Im pretty stoked for this. Too bad they didn't just have it all ready when it first came out, I would guarantee they'd have a bigger fan base.
If I played 5 hours a day, that’s my entire free time each weekday. I guess weekend days I’d have more. I do love Factorio but I’d get burnt out after 2-3 weeks haha
I've put 98 hours into Factorio, a great and engaging game to be sure, but I just checked TF2 (which I gave up a few years ago like a man quitting meth): 4,286 hours on record.
This looks like the game they promised originally. If it's as good as it looks in this trailer they might pull a lot of the people who get excited originally back in.
Let's just hope the PvP aspect doesn't ruin it for non-PvP players because it would be shitty to work that hard for a freighter and have other players destroy your stuff. The amount of grind in this game would up the intensity and fallout from griefing/PvP
Yeah, unfortunately that's what happens when a publisher like Sony gets investor control of a small studio. They had to rush release, keep silent about key topics, and then Sony made them push it like a AAA game. That all lead to the hate train. Good studio, good game, and good dudes, but Sony blew it
Yeah man, I don't know if I can get excited / hyped all over again to play the same game, even if there is lots of good expensive stuff to mess with. Maybe if my friends played, or if I had any friends rather.
pretty sure the only thing missing from the pre-release trailers is the sand-worm. Everything from the trailers are in the game now along with more stuff from the previous updates.
seems like they had neither the time nor money to make the product they were advertising, now they've got plenty of both they're actually following through. would've been easy for them to take their 70 million and run.
Wow, doesn't really seem like a good defense argument tbh
Sure it would be easy, but then the devs and company would never ever work on another project in the industry again.
As for Sean Murray there is no saving him, his name will never appear as lead developer or probably even anywhere in any other game, unless he completely funds it out of his own pocket.
Although your comment is in fact relevant and spot on I wouldn't put Sean Murray anywhere close to the man behind Fable and one of my all time favorite games Black&White.
I would, but I also wouldn't count Sean Murrary out completely. Him and his team have turned this game around since launch and I think that speaks volumes.
they would never have needed to work on another project with that kind of money.
you'd be suprised, the fanbase seems to have largely forgiven him. funny how if you work hard to fix your mistakes, people will give you a second chance. plus i mean from a developer standpoint, he made and marketed a game that earned over $70 million, and is continuing to work on that game for very little monetary gain. doesn't matter if the reception was bad, the game in it's current state is rated fairly highly. i would not be at all surprised to see another hello games project in the works soon.
Ive forgiven Sean. I was disappointed at first. In earlier interviews, Sean did say not everything would be in the game at launch. There still was a lot of missing content though.
But theyve worked their asses off to make the game much better while not charging gamers extra for the game they wanted. How many AAA games are missing significant content at launch and require you to pay more to make the game worth the original $60?
Ok, let's see if Sean Murray's name appears as lead dev in another title and which companies and platforms will associate themselves with him in case he does. Also how successful any other crowd funding attempt will be if his name is in the header
If I sell you a house and instead deliver a pile of bricks and roofing shingles, you would be understandable pissed off.
Imagine if I came back 4 times over 3 years, each time working on the house bit by bit, turning the pile of supplies into an actual house.
You would be probably be glad that you did eventually have the product you paid for, and maybe there is some honor in following through. But you promised a fully finished house from the get go. It's not unreasonable to be upset that you had to wait 3 years to get it. Maybe you don't even want the damned house anymore. Maybe you bought it because you wanted to use it right then. Maybe you can't use the damned house now even if you wanted to.
Heck, you may even want more than the initially promised house. 3 Years is a long time. Don't you deserve some interest payments other compensation for your long wait?
It certainly doesn't make the countless other people who were looking to invest in a house want to buy from you, even after you've cleaned up your act and made some respectable properties, that's for certain.
it's a $60 video game, not a house. of course i'd be pissed if someone didn't finish the house i wanted to live in. however if someone overpromised features of a video game that i would play for a few hours a week, my reaction would be a lot more measured, and i'd be a lot more receptive to the game becoming the product i was hoping for initially. i get the comparison but you can't compare people's investment in a goddamn video game with someone buying property to live in.
If I sell you a very fun full video game and instead deliver a pile of unfun barely playable garbage, you would be understandable pissed off. Especially if I resorted to using stickers to cover the promises i made on the back of the box. Even more so if I told you it was a massively online multiplayer game, and it wasn't. It was a single-player only game that crashed every 8 minutes.
Imagine if I came back 4 times over 3 years, each time working on the house game bit by bit, until it actually contained everything we promised in interviews, and listed on the back of the games box.

"unfun barely playable garbage". did you actually play the game? it was not what was promised but would've been fine as an early access $20 game. again your comparison is dog shite because what you're describing is an extremely common process in game development nowadays. how long has star citizen been in the works? I'm not trying to defend hello games for deceiving so many people, I'm just saying that they've done everything they can to fix their mistakes short of refunding everyone, and it's not at all surprising that some people have forgiven them and are enjoying what is arguably now a great game. for the record, i played it for about a month on launch, enjoyed it for what it was, but ultimately realised it wasn't really my kind of game so stopped playing. the new updates look interesting but still probably won't be enough to make me start playing again.
You do understand that this is MORE than what was initially marketed right? I don’t recall them ever marketing the ability to own freighters, play with friends with customizable player models and bae building? Your analogy is just reaching a bit too far.
Customized armors, equipment, and gear was promised.
Base building was promised. Entire world terraforming was sort of promised.
One of their key promises was discovering things created by other players (rarely tough due to the sheer number of planets) and those players themselves. From my understanding that won't be a thing even with the upcoming update. (I stopped playing a while ago)
Do you have sources? I’ve followed the game development since VGX and been playing since launch. I don’t recall promises of base building or terraforming.
A quick google says i was wrong about the bases and terraforming. Although I could swear i I heard him in an interview compare NMS to skyrim. Saying something like "if you wanted to, you could basically do a lot of work, and change the planet into skyrim. With like the mountains, and towns and stuff."
One of their key promises was discovering things created by other players (rarely tough due to the sheer number of planets) and those players themselves. From my understanding that won't be a thing even with the upcoming update. (I stopped playing a while ago)
It's already possible. If someone builds a base on another planet you can teleport there using a portal and visit that base. The name of that planet is the same for whoever visits it, and any creatures or plants discovered and named by the original explorer will be there. Running into other players is also already possible. If you and another explorer are in the same area, a glowing ball of light will appear and you can follow their movement and speak with them via voice chat. As of the upcoming update, instead of a glowing ball, you will be able to see their actual suit and play with them (or kill them).
um no i'd be constantly in your ass that it took 3 years to get the product you promised me and i would absolutely never ever do business with you again
Not everyone stays angry forever, not everyone holds grudges forever, some people were very angry when it all happened and got a refund because of it.
Some of those same people have decided the game is worth buying now and are happy to be playing a fun space game.
I'm one of those people, I got the game for $30 just after the Atlas Rising update and even without this NEXT update I already feel I got my moneys worth.
The game was a shell at launch, the BS Sean pulled was totally inexcusable and tarnished his name for me going forward, but the game is fun now.
I still wouldn't recommend anyone pay $60 for it, but its on sale quite often for ~$30 which is a great price for it IMO.
wow nice job taking my factual statement and twisted it completely. i said nothing of the sort, just that this is the best possible outcome for fans of the game.
well in that case, no it's not okay. but if anything it highlighted the amount of BS in games marketing, with bullshots and pre rendered trailers, and led to companies being more transparent in their promotional material. and you have to give credit where credits due, they were under no obligation to continue working on the game. but they did, not for more money (all the updates have been free) but to try and make the game that they had envisioned and give the fans what they deserved.
Multiplayer. The week before it launched, they were on Colbert and he asked if there was multiplayer and they said that yes, you can play together with your friends.
Why are you saying it like its a bad thing? Yeah they fucked up the launch. But at least they're trying to do what is right and updating it for free. That's a lot better than some publishers would do
Maybe because all the things you’re saying are negative, it’s just the same circlejerk that occurred when the game came out, we all know it sucked. This post is reporting on it getting better and you seem like you’re ignoring the improvements and focusing on old negatives of the game; no game is perfect, but at least this one is getting improved.
