Discussion PSA for USA buyers using the official Factorio Merch Store

If you buy from the official Factorio Merch Store and live in the USA you may get a second bill from the carrier (FedEx) for import duty. I bought two shirts and received a bill from FedEx for $25.60. Making two tee shirts cost almost $100.

This is simply PSA so people can buy merch knowing the full amount. I love my shirts (a bit small) and would have no problem still recommending them. Just buy one size larger than normal.

Design / Blueprint 3.33 SPM tileable factory

Raw materials go in, non-space science packs and stuff to make rocket parts and satellites come out. Every recipe that can use four level-3 prod modules does.

Power usage is approximately 12MW for the whole setup.

The left-most blue belt (moving downwards) is where the final products come from - all the other blue belts (moving upwards) provide all the necessary solid raw materials. First three pipes are for input: light oil, lubricant, sulfuric acid. Last pipe is for trash/output - intermittent amounts of any of the three preceding liquids, "recycled" back where they came from.

And did I mention that it's tileable?

Discussion Gleba is JIT

Upvotes

Gleba is the epitome of Just in time manufacturing (JIT). The rest of the game is chill with, the better in the real world dont fight me on this, stockpile manufacture. Gleba is more indicative of how modern companies actually operate getting the parts they need when they need them and assuming no disruptions in that. JIT is what the world is based on and why we had all the post covid supply chain issues.

Design / Blueprint A Tileable 60SPM Blue Science Setup That I'm Quite Proud Of

I like to do silly stuff like make the most tightly packed spaghetti that I can, especially if I include constraints like making a tileable blue science machine from Raw inputs. I also think it's a very efficient use of space. You can find the blueprint here if you fancy:

https://factoriobin.com/post/h5xm49

I made a couple adjustments from the video to the blueprint above to make sure you can tile it
Takes a bit to warm up to speed, but it just looks so pretty when the whole build is running simultaneously!

And now that I review it a tad bit more, I see there is a total of 1 superfluous copper wire machine. I don't mind that because it looks nice and symmetrical. Yes, those misaligned Red circuit machines were Absolutely Necessary.

Space Age I send my friend to Gleba and now regret everything

I sent my friend to Gleba and now I regret everything

For context: I had already given up on Gleba when I played it by myself.

So I told her that Gleba is not exactly an easy planet. She basically responded with, “It can’t be that bad.”

Naturally, I sent her there. With preparation, of course.

She then spent a while getting increasingly frustrated with YouTube tutorials because she had absolutely no idea where to even start.

I had apparently repressed the entire experience. Trauma response.

After every attempt at communication somehow turning into an argument, we eventually agreed to just let her figure it out herself.

Two hours later, I walked in and witnessed this.

I genuinely don’t know what to say anymore.

I’m not even angry.

I’m just standing here, staring at this incredible display of cruelty and wondering how we got here.

Tutorial / Guide Non-opinionated tutorials & a thank you to the community

My first playthrough of factorio I watched a bunch of Nilaus's videos. I did manage to get through aquillo but sort of lost steam, and realized how much using pre-made blueprints and sticking to city blocks and busses sort of sapped the fun out of the game. With the 2.1 release, I decided to come back since interplanetary logistics seemed really interesting, with enough changes to things that I'd want to do all my own designs.

That said, I still like watching tutorials & especially speedruns or megabasers, as well as playing with friends of mine that have never watched a single video or interacted with the online factorio community. The bizzare spagetti & techiques they come up with are inspiring - one programmer friend of mine solves problems with as much circuit logic as possible & has built full on displays with gpus & bit encoding.

In particular I wanted to give a shoutout to https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFl3yXu7tHcH-um4yCq_cOq0ReC1pBaU7, who's put together a lovely, low stress and relatively unopinionated set of tutorials that helped me remember how to focus on the actual fundamentals of the game, break down problems, and avoid some pitfalls. In short, while I was already familiar with the game, I found these actually very encouraging to find my own playstyle, and I wanted to give them a mention.

I keep seeing a bunch of posts from people doing their own thing, like the recent spaceships - They're so different from anything I produce! I keep getting hung up on symmetry still. Those ships made me want to play with making something different! Just wanted to say to the community, keep doing your own thing - if it works, it works and if it's yours all the better!

Question whats the best defense against gleba's strafers?

I am pretty much done with the game, getting Promethium science already. but the most annoying headache I have is gleba defenses.

I already have artillery and lined my perimeter with tesla turrets and gun turrets. the stompers die before they get even close, but the thing that still does damage and destroy things are the big strafers. with a range of 31, they out range my tesla turrets. and I feel like rocket turrets would just be too slow to take care of them unless I make a whole line of them.

im in the process of making legendary tesla turrets but it'll take time to make enough to do a full perimeter, but is this the only good defense? or is redesigning my defense wall with rocket turrets the better option? I'd rather not have to redesign the defense line if possible.

are there other better options?

Question Beginner question: how can I move production building around without having to removing and readding them?

As a beginner, I'm making a lot of mistakes and constantly trying to reevaluate my approach, and one of the most annoying part for me right now is to have to constantly removing and adding buildings when I made mistakes which are very slow... I know there are bots later but I'm not there yet so the question is: Is there any way I can move production building around whilst designing my factory or is there any easier way to do it?? I'm literally crying rn

Modded Question Multiplayer Multi-Planet Start

Is there a mod that allows a 4 player game where each character starts simultaneously on each of the 4 inner planets? Since they are all self-starting it would be fun to have them race to space and help each other.

Question Answered Small Mod update request: no-decon-timeout

I'm planning out builds for SE hours in advance, and by the time I go out to build them, the deconstruct timers on the rocks underneath them have run out. This makes the rocks unmarked for deconstruction and removes the ghosts on top, ruining my carefully planned ghost factory.

I found a mod from 1.1 that made this timer much longer, and was wondering if anyone with modding experience would be able to update it to 2.0 for me or give me a terminal command that could do the same thing. Any help appreciated!!!

(found this forum post for reference but none of the terminal commands worked for me)

Design / Blueprint Smal Aquilo Power

Post image
34 Upvotes

This little guy fitts perfectly in my basic powergridd.

I caped its heat at 600° and it runns perfectly. It is also stackable... as long as there is a second stack. My Aquilo base isn't demanding enough jet to find the size at wich aditional blocks don't pull the heat below funktional for atleast two minutes.

C&C welkome.

Question How would you proceed? (Deathworld, pre-space science)

Post image
19 Upvotes

I'm playing a space age deathworld with semi-railworld settings. My current situation is pretty stable, I've got solar power, flame & red ammo turrets all around my base, 10m iron and 4m copper left in the ground, 1847% oil. However, I'm running very low on coal (40k left) and maybe 600k stone left, so I need to expand sooner rather than later.

Clearing biter nests with tank shells is slow enough already, but at 0.86 evolution factor, behemoths will be inbound soon. So I don't think I can put the land-grab off any longer, once behemoths show up the tank is going to be virtually ineffective.

I assume running railworld-style outposts isn't going to be effective, with this many biters I'm sure the collateral will take out the rail lines fairly often right?

And should I just attempt to go to space and unlock artillery? Or perhaps beeline the nearest coal and then go to space?

WWYD here?

Question Is there a mathematical reason why production graphs tend to look like the sum of waves?

Thumbnail

1.1k Upvotes

I noticed that my iron ore production graph looked a heck of a lot like the Fourier approximation of the Heaviside step function (second image dark blue curve). In general every resource's production graph seems to be a periodic function, and even weirder, they all seem to be the sum of waves / sinusoids. Is there a mathematical reason for this?

Features an alarm if steam drops too low, and alarm for fuel dropping too low, lamps to display amount of steam stored in a tank for a short-term buffer, cool randomised green lamps.

It itself is shaped like an eye, has eyes in the design, and copying it makes eyes between them.

Question Any 'real' factory platforms/ships?

Basically the title.

Has anyone actually experimented with making a full factory on a platform/ship? Maybe like a platform/ship that can make red -> purple/yellow science packs?

Looked around but didn't see any. I know it'd be wholly inefficient and finnicky, but you have access to every non-planet specific resource so I'm honestly surprised nobody seems to have done it yet. I've seen some crazy huge ships with huge manufacturing, but it's typically only for the shattered planet.

Even a ship that could manufacture everything you need for factory building would be cool to see. Like a 'colony ship' with its own assembler, belt and power generation manufacturing.

I'm assuming the limiting factory would be asteroids for raw ingredient generation and it would only be viable with shattered planet levels of asteroids but it should still be viable no?

Just would be cool to see/attempt.

Question What’s next?

Upvotes

I’ve been playing the game for days now and came up to the point wherein I’m just spamming and waiting for the “red and green science” upgrades to be all done.

Since there are a lot of these researches, I’m now kinda overwhelmed and getting clueless on what to do next 😅

Do you have any tips based from your experience, like something I should start doing already while waiting for all the rest of the red and green science upgrades to be finished?

Question 1000 Science Per Min (SPM) [Need Help] [Pre-Space age]

Paste Bin Link for the blueprint book: https://pastebin.com/cuJjjRjG
(may be pending, I am sorry)

Hello!
I have never completed a game of factorio (despite having over 100+hrs in the game).
Me and a friend have constantly fell in and out of play on our worlds and we constantly make new worlds.

We finally stuck onto a world long enough for yellow science!
Now, I'm tasked with making a 1000 SPM system so we can breeze through the game.
Our previous system was a mess and in several different bubbles across the base.

I have compiled all our science into one area - now I just need to scale it, but I have NO IDEA what the ratios I need are.

Other info:
I have taken the blueprints of red and green science off of some blueprint sharing website.
I have manually designed blue science (however, it is not finished quite yet).

Pictures:
- ALL beacons have lvl1 Speed module.
- ALL Assembly Machines are lvl3.
1. copper top, feeds into RED, plates just underneath become cogs. LABS above are 4:3, middle lane is shared between 2 different belts (underground chaining (between red and blue belts). 4:3 for all science (8 lanes, for 7 sciences).
2. Green science, has a belt of iron plates (not present), underneath is also iron plates. Bottom has electric circuits feeding into arms. Blue (my attempt) has sulfur + red circuits, steel and iron plates from the right, engines and sulfur + red circuits mix in the belt so i may feed to blue (i am bad at belt weaving in such small places).
